This paper is concerned with the risk management practices of an electricity retailer motivated by the Dutch electricity market. We examine the effectiveness of the existing base- and peak-load futures contracts as a risk management tool for the electricity retailers. We analytically characterize the retailer’s optimal hedging policy as a function of the serial correlation of the prices and the demand profiles of its customers. We find that the retailer typically over-hedges in the futures market, and the over-hedging amount increases when both base- and peak-load contracts are used. Our findings indicate that although the existing contracts in the futures market are quite efficient to replicate the exposure from profiled customers, when industrial consumers and renewable generation are included to the retailer’s portfolio, the effectiveness of such contracts decreases substantially. In our motivating example, hedging the risk of the profiled customers with base-load contracts, the firm may reduce the variance of its cash flows by 85.9%. In addition to the base-load contracts, including peak-load contracts into the hedging portfolio of the retailer increases the efficiency of hedging to 89.3%. However, when we consider the aggregate portfolio of the retailer including profiled customers, industrial consumers and renewable contracts, the efficiency of hedging through the existing futures contracts goes down as low as 32.8% during certain periods. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

In this light, this paper introduces a novel modelling and optimization approach for a combined-cycle power plant (CCPP) integrated with reverse osmosis (RO) and multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination systems. The integrated CCPP and RO–MED desalination system is thermodynamically modelled utilizing MATLAB and EES software environments, and the results are validated via Thermoflex software simulations. Comprehensive energy, exergic, exergoeconomic, and exergoenvironmental (4E) analyses are performed to assess the performance of the integrated system. Furthermore, a new multi-objective water cycle algorithm (MOWCA) is implemented to optimize the main performance parameters of the integrated system. Finally, a real-world case study is performed based on Iran's Shahid Salimi Neka power plant. The results reveal that the system exergy efficiency is increased from 8.4 to 51.1% through the proposed MOWCA approach, and the energy and freshwater costs are reduced by 8.4% and 29.4%, respectively. The latter results correspond to an environmental impact reduction of 14.2% and 33.5%. Hence, the objective functions are improved from all exergic, exergoeconomic, and exergoenvironmental perspectives, proving the approach to be a valuable tool towards implementing more sustainable combined power plants and desalination systems.

This work proposes a quantitative method to characterise the combustion behaviours of individual pulverised coal particles by measuring a set of physical parameters from digital images of the particles. The combustion process of pulverised particles of bituminous coal in a visual drop tube furnace was recorded by a high-speed camera with a frame rate of 6200 frames per second. An improved-Canny algorithm was developed to extract the combustion zones of a coal particle in both the volatile and char combustion phases. Using the improved-Canny and Otsu algorithms, the unburned part of the particle was identified in the volatile combustion phase. Characteristic parameters of coal particles, including the area, brightness, length, width and aspect ratio of volatile flame, and falling velocity, were derived from the processed images. The results obtained show that the volatile and char combustion took place successively and the volatile matter was combusted almost as soon as it was released. The particle travelled upward for around 14 ms during the early stage of combustion due to the influence of devolatilisation and volatile combustion. The particle also exhibited a slight difference in the rotation frequency at different combustion phases.

Schoenmakers; Konstantinos Anastasakis; Konstantinos Anastasakis;The present work focuses on the sampling procedure and quantification of the PAH yield from the fast pyrolysis of waste softwood. In particular, fast pyrolysis experiments were conducted using a CDS Pyroprobe 5200 at temperatures between 500 °C and 1000 °C, at a heating rate of 600 °C/s for a sample size of 30 mg. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for the determination of the PAH compounds present in the liquid sample fraction, while a micro – GC was employed for the analysis of the main gaseous products (CO, CO2, CH4 and H2). An alternative tar sampling protocol was proposed, which employed the use of a cold trap (50 °C) and an isopropanol filled impinger bottle for the collection of the condensable products. The experiments were compared to heated foil reactor based pyrolysis tests within the same temperature range and heating rate, except for a slightly lower sample size (10 mg). The Pyroprobe and adapted sampling system proved to be more efficient regarding PAH capture and quantification compared to the heated foil reactor. Naphthalene, acenaphthylene and phenanthrene were the main PAH compounds detected. The PAH yields increased with pyrolysis temperature, up to values corresponding to roughly 0.2 wt% of the overall yield at 1000 °C. From the results it was derived that PAH evolution is mainly a product of secondary decomposition of primary tar, since the char yield stabilized for higher temperatures and the yields of CO, H2 and CH4 increased. Overall mass balance closure values were around 80 wt% on average. Char and gas yields were determined with high reproducibility, however gravimetric liquid analysis lacked due to the inability to gravimetrically measure the yield condensing in the impinger bottle. Future work is aimed on improving on this particular aspect. Overall, the alternative tar sampling system proposed was successful in the quantification of PAH from biomass fast pyrolysis experiments offering increased flexibility, accuracy and practicality of use.

It follows the development of the basic ideas in a university research project, through multistage low-speed model testing, to their application to the high pressure engine compressor. An essential element of the project was the use of multistage CFD and some of the development of the method to allow the designs to take place is also discussed. Part I of the paper concentrated on the fundamental university-based research and the methods development. Part II describes additional low-speed multistage design and testing and the high-speed engine compressor designs and tests.

In this paper, a new long-term distribution network charging is proposed to accommodate uncertain load growth. Instead of using fixed a load growth rate (LGR), it adopts a fuzzy model, developed based on a set of projected deterministic LGRs and confidence levels. This fuzzy model is incorporated into the pricing model through $ {\alpha } $ -cut intervals. In order to improve computational efficiency, an analytical pricing approach is introduced. The vertex extension approach is used to build charge membership functions. Thereafter, a common defuzzification approach, center of gravity, is employed to defuzzify membership functions in order to generate deterministic charges. The new approach is benchmarked with two existing standard charging methods on a practical U.K. high-voltage distribution system. Results show that it is effective in capturing the uncertainty in load growth.

Hence, the reliability of the distribution network is particularly important in the lives of customers. Natural disasters such as hurricane and earthquake or sudden faults may threaten the reliability of the distribution network. Therefore, the focus of this study is to provide a new formulation for the distribution system resilience and voltage security. To improve the mentioned objectives in the automated distribution system, the concept of distribution feeder reconfiguration (DFR) is used in this study. Due attention of distribution network resilience and voltage security issues, energy not supplied and voltage stability index along with power loss are considered as objective functions. According to the increase of distributed generators in the distribution network, the effect of these units is considered in the DFR problem. An improved particle swarm optimization is presented to solve the complex and non-convex DFR problem. The proposed algorithm is tested into two distribution systems including IEEE 33 and 70-node.

A system-based approach has been adopted, looking at the interaction with other key systems. Previous innovation has aimed at reducing the power consumption of the cooling system or incorporating different cooling strategies and improving the engine warm-up rate for improved fuel consumption by higher operating temperatures. Electrical pumps can operate independently of the engine speed, and precision cooling and nucleate boiling have improved the heat transfer within the engine, reducing coolant flow requirements by 90 per cent. Improved warm-up rates have been demonstrated by using reduced thermal inertia or energy recovery systems either simulated on the test rig or through heat exchangers with exhaust gases. The resultant reduction in the fuel consumption is a result of various effects of the temperature on both the lubricating system and the combustion process. Despite difficulties in accurately measuring the engine friction, studies suggest that an increase in the engine temperature from 50°C to 80°C reduces the engine friction by 44 per cent because of 67 per cent lower oil viscosity. Simultaneous reduction in the emissions of nitogen oxides (NO x) and the fuel consumption of 13.5 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively have been achieved by including the engine thermal system in the calibration procedure. However, in-cylinder data needs to be studied to understand fully the mechanisms involved. Hotter engine temperatures reduce ignition delay, making combustion occur earlier in the cycle, which has a positive effect on the fuel consumption but a negative effect on the NO x emissions. Engine thermal management requires a system-based approach if the effects are to be fully understood but offers potential as an additional parameter in engine calibration.

Papageorgiou;Abstract Electricity dispatch is a difficult optimisation problem that aims at minimising total fuel cost while satisfying system power demand and certain thermal unit constraints. Modelling valve point effects, multiple fuel options or transmission losses brings non-convexity and non-smoothness into the mathematical models. This paper proposes mathematical programming-based models for valve point effects, multiple fuel options and transmission loss problems respectively. Mathematical programming leads to robust and rigorous optimisation methods for these problems. The applicability of the proposed methods is demonstrated through a number of case studies. For all the case studies, the corresponding methods identify power schedules at least as good as or better than the best known in literature.

This paper is concerned with the risk management practices of an electricity retailer motivated by the Dutch electricity market. We examine the effectiveness of the existing base- and peak-load futures contracts as a risk management tool for the electricity retailers. We analytically characterize the retailer’s optimal hedging policy as a function of the serial correlation of the prices and the demand profiles of its customers. We find that the retailer typically over-hedges in the futures market, and the over-hedging amount increases when both base- and peak-load contracts are used. Our findings indicate that although the existing contracts in the futures market are quite efficient to replicate the exposure from profiled customers, when industrial consumers and renewable generation are included to the retailer’s portfolio, the effectiveness of such contracts decreases substantially. In our motivating example, hedging the risk of the profiled customers with base-load contracts, the firm may reduce the variance of its cash flows by 85.9%. In addition to the base-load contracts, including peak-load contracts into the hedging portfolio of the retailer increases the efficiency of hedging to 89.3%. However, when we consider the aggregate portfolio of the retailer including profiled customers, industrial consumers and renewable contracts, the efficiency of hedging through the existing futures contracts goes down as low as 32.8% during certain periods. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

In this light, this paper introduces a novel modelling and optimization approach for a combined-cycle power plant (CCPP) integrated with reverse osmosis (RO) and multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination systems. The integrated CCPP and RO–MED desalination system is thermodynamically modelled utilizing MATLAB and EES software environments, and the results are validated via Thermoflex software simulations. Comprehensive energy, exergic, exergoeconomic, and exergoenvironmental (4E) analyses are performed to assess the performance of the integrated system. Furthermore, a new multi-objective water cycle algorithm (MOWCA) is implemented to optimize the main performance parameters of the integrated system. Finally, a real-world case study is performed based on Iran's Shahid Salimi Neka power plant. The results reveal that the system exergy efficiency is increased from 8.4 to 51.1% through the proposed MOWCA approach, and the energy and freshwater costs are reduced by 8.4% and 29.4%, respectively. The latter results correspond to an environmental impact reduction of 14.2% and 33.5%. Hence, the objective functions are improved from all exergic, exergoeconomic, and exergoenvironmental perspectives, proving the approach to be a valuable tool towards implementing more sustainable combined power plants and desalination systems.

This work proposes a quantitative method to characterise the combustion behaviours of individual pulverised coal particles by measuring a set of physical parameters from digital images of the particles. The combustion process of pulverised particles of bituminous coal in a visual drop tube furnace was recorded by a high-speed camera with a frame rate of 6200 frames per second. An improved-Canny algorithm was developed to extract the combustion zones of a coal particle in both the volatile and char combustion phases. Using the improved-Canny and Otsu algorithms, the unburned part of the particle was identified in the volatile combustion phase. Characteristic parameters of coal particles, including the area, brightness, length, width and aspect ratio of volatile flame, and falling velocity, were derived from the processed images. The results obtained show that the volatile and char combustion took place successively and the volatile matter was combusted almost as soon as it was released. The particle travelled upward for around 14 ms during the early stage of combustion due to the influence of devolatilisation and volatile combustion. The particle also exhibited a slight difference in the rotation frequency at different combustion phases.

In particular, fast pyrolysis experiments were conducted using a CDS Pyroprobe 5200 at temperatures between 500 °C and 1000 °C, at a heating rate of 600 °C/s for a sample size of 30 mg. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for the determination of the PAH compounds present in the liquid sample fraction, while a micro – GC was employed for the analysis of the main gaseous products (CO, CO2, CH4 and H2). An alternative tar sampling protocol was proposed, which employed the use of a cold trap (50 °C) and an isopropanol filled impinger bottle for the collection of the condensable products. The experiments were compared to heated foil reactor based pyrolysis tests within the same temperature range and heating rate, except for a slightly lower sample size (10 mg). The Pyroprobe and adapted sampling system proved to be more efficient regarding PAH capture and quantification compared to the heated foil reactor. Naphthalene, acenaphthylene and phenanthrene were the main PAH compounds detected. The PAH yields increased with pyrolysis temperature, up to values corresponding to roughly 0.2 wt% of the overall yield at 1000 °C. From the results it was derived that PAH evolution is mainly a product of secondary decomposition of primary tar, since the char yield stabilized for higher temperatures and the yields of CO, H2 and CH4 increased. Overall mass balance closure values were around 80 wt% on average. Char and gas yields were determined with high reproducibility, however gravimetric liquid analysis lacked due to the inability to gravimetrically measure the yield condensing in the impinger bottle. Future work is aimed on improving on this particular aspect. Overall, the alternative tar sampling system proposed was successful in the quantification of PAH from biomass fast pyrolysis experiments offering increased flexibility, accuracy and practicality of use.

In this paper, a new long-term distribution network charging is proposed to accommodate uncertain load growth. Instead of using fixed a load growth rate (LGR), it adopts a fuzzy model, developed based on a set of projected deterministic LGRs and confidence levels. This fuzzy model is incorporated into the pricing model through $ {\alpha } $ -cut intervals. In order to improve computational efficiency, an analytical pricing approach is introduced. The vertex extension approach is used to build charge membership functions. Thereafter, a common defuzzification approach, center of gravity, is employed to defuzzify membership functions in order to generate deterministic charges. The new approach is benchmarked with two existing standard charging methods on a practical U.K. high-voltage distribution system. Results show that it is effective in capturing the uncertainty in load growth.

According to the increase of distributed generators in the distribution network, the effect of these units is considered in the DFR problem. An improved particle swarm optimization is presented to solve the complex and non-convex DFR problem. The proposed algorithm is tested into two distribution systems including IEEE 33 and 70-node.

A system-based approach has been adopted, looking at the interaction with other key systems. Previous innovation has aimed at reducing the power consumption of the cooling system or incorporating different cooling strategies and improving the engine warm-up rate for improved fuel consumption by higher operating temperatures. Electrical pumps can operate independently of the engine speed, and precision cooling and nucleate boiling have improved the heat transfer within the engine, reducing coolant flow requirements by 90 per cent. Improved warm-up rates have been demonstrated by using reduced thermal inertia or energy recovery systems either simulated on the test rig or through heat exchangers with exhaust gases. The resultant reduction in the fuel consumption is a result of various effects of the temperature on both the lubricating system and the combustion process. Despite difficulties in accurately measuring the engine friction, studies suggest that an increase in the engine temperature from 50°C to 80°C reduces the engine friction by 44 per cent because of 67 per cent lower oil viscosity. Simultaneous reduction in the emissions of nitogen oxides (NO x) and the fuel consumption of 13.5 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively have been achieved by including the engine thermal system in the calibration procedure. However, in-cylinder data needs to be studied to understand fully the mechanisms involved. Hotter engine temperatures reduce ignition delay, making combustion occur earlier in the cycle, which has a positive effect on the fuel consumption but a negative effect on the NO x emissions. Engine thermal management requires a system-based approach if the effects are to be fully understood but offers potential as an additional parameter in engine calibration.

Papageorgiou;Abstract Electricity dispatch is a difficult optimisation problem that aims at minimising total fuel cost while satisfying system power demand and certain thermal unit constraints. Modelling valve point effects, multiple fuel options or transmission losses brings non-convexity and non-smoothness into the mathematical models. This paper proposes mathematical programming-based models for valve point effects, multiple fuel options and transmission loss problems respectively. Mathematical programming leads to robust and rigorous optimisation methods for these problems. The applicability of the proposed methods is demonstrated through a number of case studies. For all the case studies, the corresponding methods identify power schedules at least as good as or better than the best known in literature.
