In this paper, we compare and benchmark two different approaches to non-linear topology optimization of District Heating Networks in terms of computational cost and optimality gap. The first approach solves a mixed-integer non-linear optimization problem that resolves the binary constraints of pipe routing choices using a combinatorial optimization approach. The second approach solves a relaxed optimization problem using an adjoint optimization approach, and enforces a discrete network topology through penalization. Our benchmark shows that the relaxed penalized problem has a polynomial computational cost scaling, while the combinatorial solution scales exponentially, making it intractable for practical-sized networks. We also evaluate the optimality gap between the two approaches on two different District Heating Network optimization cases. We find that the mixed-integer approach outperforms the adjoint approach on a single-producer case, but the relaxed penalized problem is superior on a multi-producer case. Based on this study, we discuss the importance of initialization strategies for solving the optimal topology and design problem of District Heating Networks as a non-linear optimization problem.

R. Babuska in OpenAIREElectric water heaters have the ability to store energy in their water buffer without impacting the comfort of the end user. This feature makes them a prime candidate for residential demand response. However, the stochastic and nonlinear dynamics of electric water heaters, makes it challenging to harness their flexibility. Driven by this challenge, this paper formulates the underlying sequential decision-making problem as a Markov decision process and uses techniques from reinforcement learning. Specifically, we apply an auto-encoder network to find a compact feature representation of the sensor measurements, which helps to mitigate the curse of dimensionality. A wellknown batch reinforcement learning technique, fitted Q-iteration, is used to find a control policy, given this feature representation. In a simulation-based experiment using an electric water heater with 50 temperature sensors, the proposed method was able to achieve good policies much faster than when using the full state information. In a lab experiment, we apply fitted Q-iteration to an electric water heater with eight temperature sensors. Further reducing the state vector did not improve the results of fitted Q-iteration. The results of the lab experiment, spanning 40 days, indicate that compared to a thermostat controller, the presented approach was able to reduce the total cost of energy consumption of the electric water heater by 15%. Pathogens represent a significant threat to human health leading to the emergence of strategies designed to help manage their negative impact. We examined how spiritual beliefs developed to explain and predict the devastating effects of pathogens and spread of infectious disease. Analysis of existing data in studies 1 and 2 suggests that moral vitalism (beliefs about spiritual forces of evil) is higher in geographical regions characterized by historical higher levels of pathogens. Furthermore, drawing on a sample of 3140 participants from 28 countries in study 3, we found that historical higher levels of pathogens were associated with stronger endorsement of moral vitalistic beliefs. Furthermore, endorsement of moral vitalistic beliefs statistically mediated the previously reported relationship between pathogen prevalence and conservative ideologies, suggesting these beliefs reinforce behavioural strategies which function to prevent infection. We conclude that moral vitalism may be adaptive: by emphasizing concerns over contagion, it provided an explanatory model that enabled human groups to reduce rates of contagious disease.

Hrvoje Pandzic in OpenAIRERenewable electricity generation not only provides affordable and emission-free electricity but also introduces additional complexity in the day-ahead planning procedure. To address the stochastic nature of renewable generation, system operators must schedule enough controllable generation to have the flexibility required to compensate unavoidable real-time mismatches between the production and consumption of electricity. This flexibility must be scheduled ahead of real-time and comes at a cost, which should be minimized without compromising the operational reliability of the system. Energy storage facilities, such as pumped hydro energy storage (PHES), can respond quickly to mismatches between demand and generation. Hydraulic constraints on the operation of PHES must be taken into account in the day-ahead scheduling problem, which is typically not done in deterministic models. Stochastic optimization enhances the procurement of flexibility, but requires more computational resources than conventional deterministic optimization. This paper proposes a deterministic and an interval unit commitment formulation for the co-optimization of controllable generation and PHES, including a representation of the hydraulic constraints of the PHES. The proposed unit commitment (UC) models are tested against a stochastic UC formulation on a model of the Belgian power system to compare the resulting operational cost, reliability, and computational requirements. The cost-effective regulating capabilities offered by the PHES yield significant operational cost reductions in both models, while the increase in calculation times is limited.

A macro/fluid model with kinetic corrections in the closure terms of the fluid moment equations is solved in the entire domain. The kinetic corrections follow from a Monte Carlo simulation of the micro/kinetic part. We compare two hybrid models with different underlying fluid approximations: (i) a pure pressure-diffusion equation; and (ii) a continuity and parallel momentum equation with pressure-diffusion transport only retained in the directions perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. We asses their performance for a high recycling slab case with fixed background plasma. Compared to a Monte Carlo simulation of the full kinetic equation, the statistical error on the particle source is reduced with 40% and 47% for respectively the hybrid model without and with the parallel momentum equation for the same computational time. For the parallel momentum source there is only a reduction for the model with parallel momentum equation (about 69%). Binnemans, Koen in OpenAIREAbstract End-of-life NdFeB magnets are an important secondary source of rare-earth elements (REEs) and cobalt. Recycling of these magnets can also mitigate the supply problems of its constituent critical REEs (mainly neodymium and dysprosium). The recycling of bonded NdFeB magnets has received much less attention than that of sintered NdFeB magnets. In this study, a novel flow sheet is presented for recycling of bonded NdFeB magnets that is applicable to sintered magnets as well. Demagnetized magnet powder was mixed with 25 or 40 wt./vol% NaOH solution and baked at 150 to 200 °C for 30 to 540 min. In this way, REE metals were transformed into their corresponding hydroxides, whereas iron metal formed NaFeO2. By washing the reaction mixture with water, 96.5% of Na was recovered as NaOH and Na2CO3, whereas 90.3% of B was recovered as borax. The calcine containing REE hydroxides and iron oxide was then leached at 60 or 90 °C with 20 vol% Versatic Acid 10 diluted in an aliphatic diluent. >95% of the REEs were dissolved, with

Binnemans, Koen in OpenAIREAbstract End-of-life NdFeB magnets are an important secondary source of rare-earth elements (REEs) and cobalt. Recycling of these magnets can also mitigate the supply problems of its constituent critical REEs (mainly neodymium and dysprosium). The recycling of bonded NdFeB magnets has received much less attention than that of sintered NdFeB magnets. In this study, a novel flow sheet is presented for recycling of bonded NdFeB magnets that is applicable to sintered magnets as well. Demagnetized magnet powder was mixed with 25 or 40 wt./vol% NaOH solution and baked at 150 to 200 °C for 30 to 540 min. In this way, REE metals were transformed into their corresponding hydroxides, whereas iron metal formed NaFeO2. By washing the reaction mixture with water, 96.5% of Na was recovered as NaOH and Na2CO3, whereas 90.3% of B was recovered as borax. The calcine containing REE hydroxides and iron oxide was then leached at 60 or 90 °C with 20 vol% Versatic Acid 10 diluted in an aliphatic diluent. >95% of the REEs were dissolved, with

Published online: 08 June 2023 Regulatory sandboxes are generally seen as an important tool to make policy and regulation evolve with the changes in our energy system and to create an equal playing field for new technologies and business models that arise with the energy transition. Although an increasing number of legal frameworks on regulatory sandboxes are being implemented in Europe, the pioneers in the Netherlands decided to close their sandbox program. These contradictory events lead to questions about the potential of regulatory sandboxes to bring innovation to the European energy sector. This paper contributes to this discussion by examining the experiences with regulatory sandboxes in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain. We compare approved sandbox projects based on their scope and regulatory derogations to identify areas of innovation and regulatory learning brought by regulatory sandboxes. We also examine the legal frameworks of the concerned countries to evaluate the interaction between the implementation of the framework and its potential to bring innovation. In this way, we develop best practices on the topics of regulatory sandboxes and their imple[1]mentation frameworks.
