The conventional DPC control suffers from variable switching frequency and high-power ripples due to hysteresis comparators used. In order to overcome the drawbacks and to ensure a fast response, a perfect reference tracking with required dynamic behavior and low power ripple level, a direct power control combined with space vector modulation DPC-SVM is proposed. An H∞ regulator is considered for the closed loop active and reactive power. The effectiveness of the proposed DPC-SVM control based on H∞ regulator is examined by simulation and experimental validation using Matlab/Simulink software with a real-time interface based on dSPACE 1104 under different loading conditions.

However, few studies have investigated this ability and its physiological basis in the field. Especially in polar regions, where the temporal and spatial temperature variations can be extreme, are hardening responses expected to be important. Here, we examined diurnal adjustments in heat and cold tolerance in the Greenlandic seed bug Nysius groenlandicus by collecting individuals for thermal assessment at different time points within and across days. We found a significant correlation between observed heat or cold tolerance and the ambient microhabitat temperatures at the time of capture, indicating that N. groenlandicus continuously and within short time-windows respond physiologically to thermal changes and/or other environmental variables in their microhabitats. Secondly, we assessed underlying metabolomic fingerprints using GC-MS metabolomics in a subset of individuals collected during days with either low or high temperature variation. Concentrations of metabolites, including sugars, polyols, and free amino acids varied significantly with time of collection. For instance, we detected elevated sugar levels in animals caught at the lowest daily field temperatures. Polyol concentrations were lower in individuals collected in the morning and evening and higher at midday and afternoon, possibly reflecting changes in temperature. Additionally, changes in concentrations of metabolites associated with energetic metabolism were observed across collection times. Our findings suggest that in these extreme polar environments hardening responses are marked and likely play a crucial role for coping with microhabitat temperature variation on a daily scale, and that metabolite levels are actively altered on a daily basis.

Abstract Integrated assessment models (IAMs) form a prime tool in informing about climate mitigation strategies. Diagnostic indicators that allow comparison across these models can help describe and explain differences in model projections. This increases transparency and comparability. Earlier, the IAM community has developed an approach to diagnose models (Kriegler (2015 Technol. Forecast. Soc. Change 90 45–61)). Here we build on this, by proposing a selected set of well-defined indicators as a community standard, to systematically and routinely assess IAM behaviour, similar to metrics used for other modeling communities such as climate models. These indicators are the relative abatement index, emission reduction type index, inertia timescale, fossil fuel reduction, transformation index and cost per abatement value. We apply the approach to 17 IAMs, assessing both older as well as their latest versions, as applied in the IPCC 6th Assessment Report. The study shows that the approach can be easily applied and used to indentify key differences between models and model versions. Moreover, we demonstrate that this comparison helps to link model behavior to model characteristics and assumptions. We show that together, the set of six indicators can provide useful indication of the main traits of the model and can roughly indicate the general model behavior. The results also show that there is often a considerable spread across the models. Interestingly, the diagnostic values often change for different model versions, but there does not seem to be a distinct trend.

They are viable solutions for providing electricity to off-grid remote communities, like islands and remote areas. However, they need energy management systems for optimally scheduling the distributed energy generation and storage systems. Hence, this paper proposes a supervisory energy management system for optimal operation of islanded DC microgrid. Energy management system is responsible for determining optimal scheduling of each energy source and ensuring maximum utilization of renewable energy sources and supply demand balance. The proposed energy management model has been validated experimentally and practical results prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper introduces overmuch price reduction and high price volatility as two adverse consequences in future wind dominant electricity markets. While high price volatility imposes elevated risk levels for both electricity suppliers and consumers, excessive price reduction of electricity is a disincentive for investment in new generation capacity and might jeopardizes system adequacy in long term. A comparative study between marginal to discriminatory pricing mechanisms are conducted in this paper. This particular direction has been chosen because the discriminatory approach is traditionally known for lowering price volatility while gently increasing average price. To this end an adaptive agent based simulator under two pricing mechanisms is developed. The paper indicates discriminatory pricing approach can be beneficial in high penetration of wind power because it alleviates high price variations and spikiness in one hand and prevents overmuch price reduction in wind dominant electricity markets on the other hand.

The topology used by the PV system consists of two PV panels, a single-phase half-bridge inverter using two DC link capacitors, and an LCL filter in the grid side. The aim is to design a nonlinear controller to ensure simultaneously the following three objectives: (i) PV panels to provide their maximum power, (ii) balanced power exchange by regulating the DC link voltage, and (iii) power factor correction, i.e. grid current in phase with grid voltage. In order to fulfill these objectives, a multi-loop controller is designed by using back-stepping and Lyapunov approaches for the power factor correction objective and a filtered PI regulator to ensure the power balance between the grid and the PV panels. The controller performances are formally analyzed using an average large signal model. The performance of the proposed controller is shown by means of simulation results in MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment.

The topology used by the PV system consists of two PV panels, a single-phase half-bridge inverter using two DC link capacitors, and an LCL filter in the grid side. The aim is to design a nonlinear controller to ensure simultaneously the following three objectives: (i) PV panels to provide their maximum power, (ii) balanced power exchange by regulating the DC link voltage, and (iii) power factor correction, i.e. grid current in phase with grid voltage. In order to fulfill these objectives, a multi-loop controller is designed by using back-stepping and Lyapunov approaches for the power factor correction objective and a filtered PI regulator to ensure the power balance between the grid and the PV panels. The controller performances are formally analyzed using an average large signal model. The performance of the proposed controller is shown by means of simulation results in MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment.

However, the impact of AM on the circular economy (CE) is unclear. To address this issue, this study proposes a framework that presents the benefits and barriers of AM for CE. This framework is valuable for generating a new path for AM production and restructuring the supply chain. This study uses a multi-method research approach to propose this framework. (i) Secondary qualitative data were used to find the best way to categorise the results; (ii) literature review was applied to understand how the phenomenon of AM adoption meets or does not meet CE requirements; and (iii) interviews with experts were conducted to evaluate the results. The findings help to systematically highlight the benefits and barriers of AM for the CE and provide a research agenda that identifies specific actions that AM stakeholders should take to align with the CE. The broader potential of AM as a beneficial technology for CE is contingent on overcoming the identified critical barriers, and the economic viability of circular AM activities. The findings could be relevant because they clearly show how AM technology brings companies and society closer to or farther from CE.

The German ‘Energiewende’ has been successful so far in terms of deploying renewable power, mainly by applying particular feed-in tariffs, and by bundling public, academic, industrial and political support. So far though, only few EU member states proceed with a similar transition. In March 2014 CEOs of Europe’s major energy companies publicly opposed a fast and thorough transformation of electricity supplies to become fully renewable. In April 2014 the European Commission published new state aid guidelines, generally mandating renewable energy support mechanisms (premiums, tenders) of lesser performance than regularly adjusted, specific feed-in tariffs. The new guidelines are likely to be pernicious for the fast deployment of renewable electricity supplies. In light of these challenges, this position paper highlights two implications of power sector transitions. First, the engineering-economics theory of power generation systems needs fundamental revision, mainly since a growing share of power sources no longer function on command. Second, and based on the experience in Germany, the paper sketches out a strategy for a thorough transition of the power sector, which, in the end, also entails normative judgements. Deep changes in energy systems and associated ways of living require societal consensus building based on ethical considerations. Firstly, the charging system structure is built with employing photovoltaic generator and carbon capture thermal power generator. Secondly, the charging load uncertainty is modeled by using Markov Chain where the differences of speeds of vehicles are considered. Thirdly, a deterministic charging optimization model is constructed in the first stage, with the objectives of economy, environment, energy utilization and load fluctuation; and then, in the second stage, the uncertainty of photovoltaic power generation is considered to formulate two types of information gap decision theory-based models. Finally, a double factor-involved benefit allocation model for the proposed charging system is constructed in the third stage, based on the Shapley method. The case study shows that: (1) the forecast error of charging load is smaller by considering quantity transfer and speed differences; (2) carbon capture and storage system reduces CO2 emission by 85.08 % and system's cost by 2.60 %; (3) Tripartite cooperation maximizes the system's benefits, and IGDT provides multiple strategies for dealing with PV uncertainty; (5) benefit allocation considering economy and environment is more rational and highlights the contribution of carbon capture system.

The conventional DPC control suffers from variable switching frequency and high-power ripples due to hysteresis comparators used. In order to overcome the drawbacks and to ensure a fast response, a perfect reference tracking with required dynamic behavior and low power ripple level, a direct power control combined with space vector modulation DPC-SVM is proposed. An H∞ regulator is considered for the closed loop active and reactive power. The effectiveness of the proposed DPC-SVM control based on H∞ regulator is examined by simulation and experimental validation using Matlab/Simulink software with a real-time interface based on dSPACE 1104 under different loading conditions.

The conventional DPC control suffers from variable switching frequency and high-power ripples due to hysteresis comparators used. In order to overcome the drawbacks and to ensure a fast response, a perfect reference tracking with required dynamic behavior and low power ripple level, a direct power control combined with space vector modulation DPC-SVM is proposed. An H∞ regulator is considered for the closed loop active and reactive power. The effectiveness of the proposed DPC-SVM control based on H∞ regulator is examined by simulation and experimental validation using Matlab/Simulink software with a real-time interface based on dSPACE 1104 under different loading conditions.

However, few studies have investigated this ability and its physiological basis in the field. Especially in polar regions, where the temporal and spatial temperature variations can be extreme, are hardening responses expected to be important. Here, we examined diurnal adjustments in heat and cold tolerance in the Greenlandic seed bug Nysius groenlandicus by collecting individuals for thermal assessment at different time points within and across days. We found a significant correlation between observed heat or cold tolerance and the ambient microhabitat temperatures at the time of capture, indicating that N. groenlandicus continuously and within short time-windows respond physiologically to thermal changes and/or other environmental variables in their microhabitats. Secondly, we assessed underlying metabolomic fingerprints using GC-MS metabolomics in a subset of individuals collected during days with either low or high temperature variation. Concentrations of metabolites, including sugars, polyols, and free amino acids varied significantly with time of collection. For instance, we detected elevated sugar levels in animals caught at the lowest daily field temperatures. Polyol concentrations were lower in individuals collected in the morning and evening and higher at midday and afternoon, possibly reflecting changes in temperature. Additionally, changes in concentrations of metabolites associated with energetic metabolism were observed across collection times. Our findings suggest that in these extreme polar environments hardening responses are marked and likely play a crucial role for coping with microhabitat temperature variation on a daily scale, and that metabolite levels are actively altered on a daily basis.

Abstract Integrated assessment models (IAMs) form a prime tool in informing about climate mitigation strategies. Diagnostic indicators that allow comparison across these models can help describe and explain differences in model projections. This increases transparency and comparability. Earlier, the IAM community has developed an approach to diagnose models (Kriegler (2015 Technol. Forecast. Soc. Change 90 45–61)). Here we build on this, by proposing a selected set of well-defined indicators as a community standard, to systematically and routinely assess IAM behaviour, similar to metrics used for other modeling communities such as climate models. These indicators are the relative abatement index, emission reduction type index, inertia timescale, fossil fuel reduction, transformation index and cost per abatement value. We apply the approach to 17 IAMs, assessing both older as well as their latest versions, as applied in the IPCC 6th Assessment Report. The study shows that the approach can be easily applied and used to indentify key differences between models and model versions. Moreover, we demonstrate that this comparison helps to link model behavior to model characteristics and assumptions. We show that together, the set of six indicators can provide useful indication of the main traits of the model and can roughly indicate the general model behavior. The results also show that there is often a considerable spread across the models. Interestingly, the diagnostic values often change for different model versions, but there does not seem to be a distinct trend.

They are viable solutions for providing electricity to off-grid remote communities, like islands and remote areas. However, they need energy management systems for optimally scheduling the distributed energy generation and storage systems. Hence, this paper proposes a supervisory energy management system for optimal operation of islanded DC microgrid. Energy management system is responsible for determining optimal scheduling of each energy source and ensuring maximum utilization of renewable energy sources and supply demand balance. The proposed energy management model has been validated experimentally and practical results prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper introduces overmuch price reduction and high price volatility as two adverse consequences in future wind dominant electricity markets. While high price volatility imposes elevated risk levels for both electricity suppliers and consumers, excessive price reduction of electricity is a disincentive for investment in new generation capacity and might jeopardizes system adequacy in long term. A comparative study between marginal to discriminatory pricing mechanisms are conducted in this paper. This particular direction has been chosen because the discriminatory approach is traditionally known for lowering price volatility while gently increasing average price. To this end an adaptive agent based simulator under two pricing mechanisms is developed. The paper indicates discriminatory pricing approach can be beneficial in high penetration of wind power because it alleviates high price variations and spikiness in one hand and prevents overmuch price reduction in wind dominant electricity markets on the other hand.

The topology used by the PV system consists of two PV panels, a single-phase half-bridge inverter using two DC link capacitors, and an LCL filter in the grid side. The aim is to design a nonlinear controller to ensure simultaneously the following three objectives: (i) PV panels to provide their maximum power, (ii) balanced power exchange by regulating the DC link voltage, and (iii) power factor correction, i.e. grid current in phase with grid voltage. In order to fulfill these objectives, a multi-loop controller is designed by using back-stepping and Lyapunov approaches for the power factor correction objective and a filtered PI regulator to ensure the power balance between the grid and the PV panels. The controller performances are formally analyzed using an average large signal model. The performance of the proposed controller is shown by means of simulation results in MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment.

However, the impact of AM on the circular economy (CE) is unclear. To address this issue, this study proposes a framework that presents the benefits and barriers of AM for CE. This framework is valuable for generating a new path for AM production and restructuring the supply chain. This study uses a multi-method research approach to propose this framework. (i) Secondary qualitative data were used to find the best way to categorise the results; (ii) literature review was applied to understand how the phenomenon of AM adoption meets or does not meet CE requirements; and (iii) interviews with experts were conducted to evaluate the results. The findings help to systematically highlight the benefits and barriers of AM for the CE and provide a research agenda that identifies specific actions that AM stakeholders should take to align with the CE. The broader potential of AM as a beneficial technology for CE is contingent on overcoming the identified critical barriers, and the economic viability of circular AM activities. The findings could be relevant because they clearly show how AM technology brings companies and society closer to or farther from CE.

The German ‘Energiewende’ has been successful so far in terms of deploying renewable power, mainly by applying particular feed-in tariffs, and by bundling public, academic, industrial and political support. So far though, only few EU member states proceed with a similar transition. In March 2014 CEOs of Europe’s major energy companies publicly opposed a fast and thorough transformation of electricity supplies to become fully renewable. In April 2014 the European Commission published new state aid guidelines, generally mandating renewable energy support mechanisms (premiums, tenders) of lesser performance than regularly adjusted, specific feed-in tariffs. The new guidelines are likely to be pernicious for the fast deployment of renewable electricity supplies. In light of these challenges, this position paper highlights two implications of power sector transitions. First, the engineering-economics theory of power generation systems needs fundamental revision, mainly since a growing share of power sources no longer function on command. Second, and based on the experience in Germany, the paper sketches out a strategy for a thorough transition of the power sector, which, in the end, also entails normative judgements. Deep changes in energy systems and associated ways of living require societal consensus building based on ethical considerations. Firstly, the charging system structure is built with employing photovoltaic generator and carbon capture thermal power generator. Secondly, the charging load uncertainty is modeled by using Markov Chain where the differences of speeds of vehicles are considered. Thirdly, a deterministic charging optimization model is constructed in the first stage, with the objectives of economy, environment, energy utilization and load fluctuation; and then, in the second stage, the uncertainty of photovoltaic power generation is considered to formulate two types of information gap decision theory-based models. Finally, a double factor-involved benefit allocation model for the proposed charging system is constructed in the third stage, based on the Shapley method. The case study shows that: (1) the forecast error of charging load is smaller by considering quantity transfer and speed differences; (2) carbon capture and storage system reduces CO2 emission by 85.08 % and system's cost by 2.60 %; (3) Tripartite cooperation maximizes the system's benefits, and IGDT provides multiple strategies for dealing with PV uncertainty; (5) benefit allocation considering economy and environment is more rational and highlights the contribution of carbon capture system.
