Climaps.eu is an online atlas providing data, visualizations and commentaries about climate adaptation debate. It contains 33 issue-maps and 5 issue-stories. The proposed algorithm, dedicated to an electric vehicular application, is based on a self-gain scheduled controller, which guarantees the H∞ performance for a class of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. Assuming that the duty cycle of the involved DC-DC converters are considered as the variable parameters, that can be captured in real time, and forwarded to the controller to ensure both; the performance and robustness of the closed-loop system. The subsequent controller is therefore time-varying and it is automatically scheduled according to each parameter variation. This algorithm has been validated through experimental results provided by a tailor-made test bench including both the HESS and the vehicle traction emulation system. The experimental results demonstrate the overall stability of the system, where the proposed LPV supervisor successfully accomplishes a power frequency splitting in an adequate way, respecting the dynamic of the sources. The proposed solution provides significant performances for different speed levels.

We envisage this process as a particular form of market innovation in which new product qualities are inscribed into market architectures. We focus on the market for clean technologies that emerged as a result of the EU Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) directive that required polluting industries, including livestock farms, to implement the “best available techniques” in order to reduce their emissions. Our case study traces a Danish start-up firm's endeavors to commercialize one such “best available technique:” a solution for reducing ammonia emissions from farms. Building on the literature on the shaping of markets, we show that the construction of a market for clean technologies hinges upon the composition of a complex network of actors with divergent, and sometimes conflicting, interests, in which market devices (in this case, a technology list) play a pivotal role. More generally, the paper contributes to discussions on controversies and performativity in market practices and on the construction of markets designed to address environmental issues.

The storage system consists of a fuel cell (FC), serving as the main power source, and a supercapacitor (SC), serving as an auxiliary power source. It also contains a power block for energy conversion consisting of a boost converter connected with the main source and a boost-buck converter connected with the auxiliary source. The converters share the same dc bus, which is connected to the traction motor through an inverter. These power converters must be controlled to meet the following requirements: 1) tight dc bus voltage regulation, 2) perfect tracking of the SC current to its reference, and 3) asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. A nonlinear controller is developed, on the basis of the system nonlinear model, making use of Lyapunov stability design techniques. The latter accounts for the power converters' large-signal dynamics and for the FC nonlinear characteristics. It is demonstrated using both a formal analysis and simulations that the developed controller meets all desired objectives.

Concerns about climate change, diminishing social acceptance of traditional fuels, and technological innovations have led several countries to pursue energy transition strategies, typically by massive diffusion of renewable electricity supplies. The German ‘Energiewende’ has been successful so far in terms of deploying renewable power, mainly by applying particular feed-in tariffs, and by bundling public, academic, industrial and political support. So far though, only few EU member states proceed with a similar transition. In March 2014 CEOs of Europe’s major energy companies publicly opposed a fast and thorough transformation of electricity supplies to become fully renewable. In April 2014 the European Commission published new state aid guidelines, generally mandating renewable energy support mechanisms (premiums, tenders) of lesser performance than regularly adjusted, specific feed-in tariffs. The new guidelines are likely to be pernicious for the fast deployment of renewable electricity supplies. In light of these challenges, this position paper highlights two implications of power sector transitions. First, the engineering-economics theory of power generation systems needs fundamental revision, mainly since a growing share of power sources no longer function on command. Second, and based on the experience in Germany, the paper sketches out a strategy for a thorough transition of the power sector, which, in the end, also entails normative judgements. Deep changes in energy systems and associated ways of living require societal consensus building based on ethical considerations. The Paris Agreement aims to limit global mean temperature rise this century to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. This target has wide-ranging implications for Europe and its cities, which are the source of substantial greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports the state of local planning for climate change by collecting and analysing information about local climate mitigation and adaptation plans across 885 urban areas of the EU-28. A typology and framework for analysis was developed that classifies local climate plans in terms of their alignment with spatial (local, national and international) and other climate related policies. Out of eight types of local climate plans identified in total we document three types of stand-alone local climate plans classified as type A1 (autonomously produced plans), A2 (plans produced to comply with national regulations) or A3 (plans developed for international climate networks). There is wide variation among countries in the prevalence of local climate plans, with generally more plans developed by central and northern European cities. Approximately 66% of EU cities have a type A1, A2, or A3 mitigation plan, 26% an adaptation plan, and 17% a joint adaptation and mitigation plan, while about 33% lack any form of stand-alone local climate plan (i.e. what we classify as A1, A2, A3 plans). Mitigation plans are more numerous than adaptation plans, but planning for mitigation does not always precede planning for adaptation. Our analysis reveals that city size, national legislation, and international networks can influence the development of local climate plans. We found that size does matter as about 80% of the cities with above 500,000 inhabitants have a comprehensive and stand-alone mitigation and/or an adaptation plan (A1). Cities in four countries with national climate legislation (A2), i.e. Denmark, France, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, are nearly twice as likely to produce local mitigation plans, and five times more likely to produce local adaptation plans, compared to cities in countries without such legislation. A1 and A2 mitigation plans are particularly numerous in Denmark, Poland, Germany, and Finland; while A1 and A2 adaptation plans are prevalent in Denmark, Finland, UK and France. The integration of adaptation and mitigation is country-specific and can mainly be observed in two countries where local climate plans are compulsory, i.e. France and the UK. Finally, local climate plans produced for international climate networks (A3) are mostly found in the many countries where autonomous (type A1) plans are less common. This is the most comprehensive analysis of local climate planning to date. The findings are of international importance as they will inform and support decision-making towards climate planning and policy development at national, EU and global level being based on the most comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of local climate planning available to date.

The topology used by the PV system consists of two PV panels, a single-phase half-bridge inverter using two DC link capacitors, and an LCL filter in the grid side. The aim is to design a nonlinear controller to ensure simultaneously the following three objectives: (i) PV panels to provide their maximum power, (ii) balanced power exchange by regulating the DC link voltage, and (iii) power factor correction, i.e. grid current in phase with grid voltage. In order to fulfill these objectives, a multi-loop controller is designed by using back-stepping and Lyapunov approaches for the power factor correction objective and a filtered PI regulator to ensure the power balance between the grid and the PV panels. The controller performances are formally analyzed using an average large signal model. Nguyen; Ahmad Arabkoohsar;Abstract Thermal oils due to their high ability in cooling and lubricating have many applications in high-tech industries such as automotive industry. Dispersing nanoparticles in a thermal oil (which the resulted new liquid is called nanofluid) can modify further the cooling and lubrication efficiencies. This review paper aims to present the recent advances in the preparation methods and thermophysical properties measurements of oil-based nanofluids. Effects of various parameters such as nanoparticle concentration, size, and temperature on the values of properties including thermal conductivity, viscosity, density, and specific heat are reviewed. The correlations available for the properties of oil-based nanofluids are gathered from the literature that could be a worthy source for those who aim to work on oil-based nanofluids.

An experimental and numerical investigation has been carried out to study the behavior of single and multiple laminated panels subjected to ballistic impact. A pressurized air gun is used to shoot the impactor, which can attain sufficient velocity to penetrate all the laminates in a multiple laminated panel. The incidental and residual velocity of the impactor is measured to estimate the energy absorption in the impact process. The commercially available code ABAQUS has been used for the numerical simulation where the impactor has been modeled as a rigid body and the laminates have been modeled with a simple shell element. A user material model based on a continuum damage mechanics concept for failure mechanism of laminated composites has been implemented. Experimental tests showed that the numerical model could satisfactorily predict the energy absorption. Most interestingly, it has clearly demonstrated a feasible phenomenon behind counterintuitive experimental results for the multiple laminated panels.

The proposed algorithm, dedicated to an electric vehicular application, is based on a self-gain scheduled controller, which guarantees the H∞ performance for a class of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. Assuming that the duty cycle of the involved DC-DC converters are considered as the variable parameters, that can be captured in real time, and forwarded to the controller to ensure both; the performance and robustness of the closed-loop system. The subsequent controller is therefore time-varying and it is automatically scheduled according to each parameter variation. This algorithm has been validated through experimental results provided by a tailor-made test bench including both the HESS and the vehicle traction emulation system. The experimental results demonstrate the overall stability of the system, where the proposed LPV supervisor successfully accomplishes a power frequency splitting in an adequate way, respecting the dynamic of the sources. The proposed solution provides significant performances for different speed levels.

We envisage this process as a particular form of market innovation in which new product qualities are inscribed into market architectures. We focus on the market for clean technologies that emerged as a result of the EU Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) directive that required polluting industries, including livestock farms, to implement the “best available techniques” in order to reduce their emissions. Our case study traces a Danish start-up firm's endeavors to commercialize one such “best available technique:” a solution for reducing ammonia emissions from farms. Building on the literature on the shaping of markets, we show that the construction of a market for clean technologies hinges upon the composition of a complex network of actors with divergent, and sometimes conflicting, interests, in which market devices (in this case, a technology list) play a pivotal role. More generally, the paper contributes to discussions on controversies and performativity in market practices and on the construction of markets designed to address environmental issues.

The storage system consists of a fuel cell (FC), serving as the main power source, and a supercapacitor (SC), serving as an auxiliary power source. It also contains a power block for energy conversion consisting of a boost converter connected with the main source and a boost-buck converter connected with the auxiliary source. The converters share the same dc bus, which is connected to the traction motor through an inverter. These power converters must be controlled to meet the following requirements: 1) tight dc bus voltage regulation, 2) perfect tracking of the SC current to its reference, and 3) asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. A nonlinear controller is developed, on the basis of the system nonlinear model, making use of Lyapunov stability design techniques. The latter accounts for the power converters' large-signal dynamics and for the FC nonlinear characteristics. It is demonstrated using both a formal analysis and simulations that the developed controller meets all desired objectives.

Concerns about climate change, diminishing social acceptance of traditional fuels, and technological innovations have led several countries to pursue energy transition strategies, typically by massive diffusion of renewable electricity supplies. The German ‘Energiewende’ has been successful so far in terms of deploying renewable power, mainly by applying particular feed-in tariffs, and by bundling public, academic, industrial and political support. So far though, only few EU member states proceed with a similar transition. In March 2014 CEOs of Europe’s major energy companies publicly opposed a fast and thorough transformation of electricity supplies to become fully renewable. In April 2014 the European Commission published new state aid guidelines, generally mandating renewable energy support mechanisms (premiums, tenders) of lesser performance than regularly adjusted, specific feed-in tariffs. The new guidelines are likely to be pernicious for the fast deployment of renewable electricity supplies. In light of these challenges, this position paper highlights two implications of power sector transitions. First, the engineering-economics theory of power generation systems needs fundamental revision, mainly since a growing share of power sources no longer function on command. Second, and based on the experience in Germany, the paper sketches out a strategy for a thorough transition of the power sector, which, in the end, also entails normative judgements. Deep changes in energy systems and associated ways of living require societal consensus building based on ethical considerations. The Paris Agreement aims to limit global mean temperature rise this century to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. This target has wide-ranging implications for Europe and its cities, which are the source of substantial greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports the state of local planning for climate change by collecting and analysing information about local climate mitigation and adaptation plans across 885 urban areas of the EU-28. A typology and framework for analysis was developed that classifies local climate plans in terms of their alignment with spatial (local, national and international) and other climate related policies. Out of eight types of local climate plans identified in total we document three types of stand-alone local climate plans classified as type A1 (autonomously produced plans), A2 (plans produced to comply with national regulations) or A3 (plans developed for international climate networks). There is wide variation among countries in the prevalence of local climate plans, with generally more plans developed by central and northern European cities. Approximately 66% of EU cities have a type A1, A2, or A3 mitigation plan, 26% an adaptation plan, and 17% a joint adaptation and mitigation plan, while about 33% lack any form of stand-alone local climate plan (i.e. what we classify as A1, A2, A3 plans). Mitigation plans are more numerous than adaptation plans, but planning for mitigation does not always precede planning for adaptation. Our analysis reveals that city size, national legislation, and international networks can influence the development of local climate plans. We found that size does matter as about 80% of the cities with above 500,000 inhabitants have a comprehensive and stand-alone mitigation and/or an adaptation plan (A1). Cities in four countries with national climate legislation (A2), i.e. Denmark, France, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, are nearly twice as likely to produce local mitigation plans, and five times more likely to produce local adaptation plans, compared to cities in countries without such legislation. A1 and A2 mitigation plans are particularly numerous in Denmark, Poland, Germany, and Finland; while A1 and A2 adaptation plans are prevalent in Denmark, Finland, UK and France. The integration of adaptation and mitigation is country-specific and can mainly be observed in two countries where local climate plans are compulsory, i.e. France and the UK. Finally, local climate plans produced for international climate networks (A3) are mostly found in the many countries where autonomous (type A1) plans are less common. This is the most comprehensive analysis of local climate planning to date. The findings are of international importance as they will inform and support decision-making towards climate planning and policy development at national, EU and global level being based on the most comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of local climate planning available to date.

The topology used by the PV system consists of two PV panels, a single-phase half-bridge inverter using two DC link capacitors, and an LCL filter in the grid side. The aim is to design a nonlinear controller to ensure simultaneously the following three objectives: (i) PV panels to provide their maximum power, (ii) balanced power exchange by regulating the DC link voltage, and (iii) power factor correction, i.e. grid current in phase with grid voltage. In order to fulfill these objectives, a multi-loop controller is designed by using back-stepping and Lyapunov approaches for the power factor correction objective and a filtered PI regulator to ensure the power balance between the grid and the PV panels. The controller performances are formally analyzed using an average large signal model. The performance of the proposed controller is shown by means of simulation results in MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment.

Dispersing nanoparticles in a thermal oil (which the resulted new liquid is called nanofluid) can modify further the cooling and lubrication efficiencies. This review paper aims to present the recent advances in the preparation methods and thermophysical properties measurements of oil-based nanofluids. Effects of various parameters such as nanoparticle concentration, size, and temperature on the values of properties including thermal conductivity, viscosity, density, and specific heat are reviewed. The correlations available for the properties of oil-based nanofluids are gathered from the literature that could be a worthy source for those who aim to work on oil-based nanofluids.

An experimental and numerical investigation has been carried out to study the behavior of single and multiple laminated panels subjected to ballistic impact. A pressurized air gun is used to shoot the impactor, which can attain sufficient velocity to penetrate all the laminates in a multiple laminated panel. The incidental and residual velocity of the impactor is measured to estimate the energy absorption in the impact process. The commercially available code ABAQUS has been used for the numerical simulation where the impactor has been modeled as a rigid body and the laminates have been modeled with a simple shell element. A user material model based on a continuum damage mechanics concept for failure mechanism of laminated composites has been implemented. Experimental tests showed that the numerical model could satisfactorily predict the energy absorption. Most interestingly, it has clearly demonstrated a feasible phenomenon behind counterintuitive experimental results for the multiple laminated panels.
