Annual variations in the zooplankton biomass and composition during 1991-92 were studied from the inshore, mouth and upstream regions of the Burhabalanga Estuary located in the Orissa Coast (India). Zooplankton biomass was maximum at all the stations during October 1991 as a result of a mysid swarm. Copepoda was generally the most abundant group. The copepods Pseudodiaptomus bowmani, P. sewelli, Acartia tropica and A. bowmani are recorded for the first time from the east coast of India.

Achieving and maintaining global food security is challenged by changes in population, income, and climate, among other drivers. Assessing these challenges and possible solutions over the coming decades requires a rigorous multidisciplinary approach. To answer this challenge, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has developed a system of linked simulation models of global agriculture to do long-run scenario analysis of the effects of climate change and various adaptation strategies. This system includes the core International Model for Policy Analysis of Agricultural Commodities and Trade (IMPACT), which is linked to water models (global hydrology, water basin management, and water stress on crops) and crop simulation models.

Changes in chromatin conformation and nonhistone nuclear protein composition were analyzed in various classes of nuclei from the brain of control and chronic ethanol fed rats. Conformational studies of chromatin by circular dichroism spectrophotometry showed an increased molar ellipticity [theta] of chromatin in neuronal, astrocyte and oligodendroglial nuclei due to ethanol treatment. The increased molar ellipticity directly indicates relaxed state of chromatin in these nuclei, which facilitates ready state of transcription and replication. Further, the circular dichroism spectrum, due to a change over point at approximately 260 nm also indicated the possibility of DNA-protein interactions governing chromatin conformation. In microglial nuclei, the circular dichroism spectrum showed a decrease in molar ellipticity due to ethanol treatment, indicating the existence of chromatin in a condensed state. This type of circular dichroism change points towards the possibility of closed conformation, which renders the gene sequences not accessible due to conformational constrains of the chromatin. Since circular dichroism changes indicated the involvement of DNA-protein interactions, changes in nonhistone nuclear proteins were analyzed in these classes of nuclei by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. In astrocytes and oligodendrocytes two new proteins appeared in each type of nuclei while in neurons and microglial nuclei four different proteins were either completely missing or showed a decrease. These changes indicate the presence of dynamic flux of nonhistone nuclear proteins in chromatin. Taken together, the changes in chromatin conformation, associated with specific changes in non histone nuclear protein composition suggest the modulation of chromatin as a response to ethanol evoked stimulus and has relevance in the regulation of cellular responses to ethanol crisis in brain.

The main aim of the Horizon Europe Fit4Micro Project is to develop a microCHCP unit running on sustainable liquid biofuels. The application of this unit is foreseen at multi-family houses and at remote or off-grid locations. This technology will lead to very high electrical efficiencies (>40%) and a flexible heat/power ratio. Moreover, the usage of a truly advanced and RED II compliant biofuel will guarantee a high GHG emission reduction. This flexible hybrid energy system is based on a double-shaft micro gas turbine (mGT) combined with a novel humidification unit, and will be able to provide renewable heating, cooling and power production, mainly for domestic usage. The Fit4Micro solution contributes to make Europe the first enabled circular, climate-neutral and sustainable economy. In this poster, the authors present how biomass can broaden our conception of nature to ensure a sustainable future. It is a collaborative and inter-disciplinary work that criticises the modern concept of resource and recognises the interdependence within ecosystems and their limits. Biomass reanchors our needs in their materiality and reminds us that interactions on ecosystems cannot be seen solely through the prism of services and production. Non-humans are not just a decoration to be used for human consumption but are an ally for sustainable prosperity thus they should be treated as such – and biomass is a good place to start. The authors argue that there is an urgent need to redefine our sensibility to the non-humans, the ethics of our interactions and of our own needs which goes hand in hand with a necessary arbitration and debate on the useful and the superfluous final services for humans.

An extensive experimental investigation was carried out to study the energy absorbing characteristics and progressive deformation behavior of unidirectional pultruded composite tubes subjected to an axial impact load. Pultruded square and circular profiles with glass-polyester and glass-vinylester combinations were used to study the specific energy absorption characteristics. Two types of triggering profiles were incorporated to investigate the effect of triggering on energy absorption. All the above combinations were investigated for three impact velocities. The effects of geometry profile, triggering and strain rate on energy absorption of composite tubes were studied in detail. A numerical simulation using finite element method was carried out to assess the energy absorption capability of composite tubes. To model the delamination between the composite plies, a new approach was adopted using cohesive elements. The progressive failure modes and crushing characteristics of the composite tubes are presented. From these studies, the composite tubes can be considered as energy absorbing members for impact applications.
