    It's not only the carbon in the trees Forest loss affects climate not just because of the impacts it has on the carbon cycle, but also because of how it affects the fluxes of energy and water between the land and the atmosphere. Evaluating global impact is complicated because deforestation can produce different results in different climate zones, making it hard to determine large-scale trends rather than more local ones. Alkama and Cescatti conducted a global assessment of the biophysical effects of forest cover change. Forest loss amplifies diurnal temperature variations, increases mean and maximum air temperatures, and causes a significant amount of warming when compared to CO 2 emission from land-use change.     This study investigates the nexus between renewable energy consumption and economic growth in Italy in the 1970-2007 years. The unit root tests results point out that our four variables are integrated of order one. Cointegration analysis reach contradictory results. However, the long-run estimations reveal that, if renewable energy consumption increases by 1%, real GDP decreases by 0.23%. The Toda and Yamamoto approach shows that exists a unidirectional causal flow, running from renewable energy consumption to aggregate income, in line with the "growth hypothesis". Moreover, these results are confirmed by Granger causality tests. While forecasts applications set out that VAR forecasts represent an improvement on simpler forecasts in more than half the comparisons, for each variable. In fact, VAR gives more accurate forecasts, over-performing the mean, RW, and AR methods.

    Empirical studies of the EKC hypothesis may be very sensitive to datasets, specifications, and functional forms. The aim of this paper is to investigate the long-run relationship among CO2 emissions, real GDP, and energy consumption using a panel of 9 advanced economies from 1870 to 2008 using both parametric and semi-parametric additive models. While at the panel level the results provide support to the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) only in the post-1950s period, at the individual country level the inverted U-shaped relationship between CO2 and real GDP is validated for a subset of countries only. However, when a semi-parametric regression framework is applied an inverse U-shaped pattern becomes clear for all countries of the sample, except Canada. Empirical findings indicate that relaxing the restrictions associated with parametric regression models may be critical for the question of investigating the existence of the EKC.     The continuous dynamic motion of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) can introduce long-term fatigue and structural tensions, reinforcing the importance of structural control. Here, the novel proposed concept of collective structural control of waked floating wind farm by optimally de-loading the FOWTs with more motion, in order to avoid undesired tower-base bending-moment, long-term fatigue or increasing mooring tensions aims to be introduced. The study proposes a collective control strategy for distributing power set-points based on real-time assessment of the FOWT’s structural behavior by mitigating pitch motion and optimizing performance. To evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, a predictive controller is developed and tested on a spar-based wind farm. The results demonstrate that the adoption of a collective structural controller is more suitable for long-term operation of floating wind turbines compared to conventional power-oriented strategies, diminishing 7 times the standard deviation of the mean pitch values of the FOWTs in the array and thus, minimizing axial stress of the most upstream FOWTs. The impact of wave states on the behavior of the floating wind turbines within the array can be observed, influencing the effectiveness of the control strategy.

    This report contains the main experimental results from the project SeaCH4NGE-PLUS. Briefly, the screening of chemical content of a range of seaweeds collected in Iceland in 2020 and 2021 did not identify a bromoform rich seaweed that had high promise as a methane reducing feed component for cattle. Certain samples of brown macroalgae were high in total phenolic content, indicating a high phlorotannin content that has been associated with a moderate methane reduction. That is consistent with the findings of this research. Samples of Asparagopsis sp. indicated that they may have a short shelf life to preserve the bromoform content. Fermentation may increase slightly the methane reduction potential of seaweed, but extracting phlorotannins did not yield a much higher reduction of methane as hypothesized. This report is closed until 31.12.2023. ___ Þessi skýrsla inniheldur helstu tilraunaniðurstöður úr verkefninu SeaCH4NGE-PLUS. Í stuttu máli sýndi skimun á efnainnihaldi u.þ.b. 20 þörungategunda sem safnað var á Íslandi 2020 og 2021, ekki fram á brómóformríkt þang, en bromoform ríkt þang getur haft metan minnkandi áhrif þegar það er gefið nautgripum. Sýni af brúnþörungum voru gjarnan há í fenólinnihaldi, sem bendir til mikils flórótanníninnihalds sem hefur verið tengt hóflegri metanlækkun. Rannsóknir á Asparagopsis þörungum. gaf til kynna að þau sýni gætu haft stutt geymsluþol, en áhrif voru minni en reiknað var með.     This paper analyses the relationship among economic growth, energy use and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Israel over the period 1971–2006. Results of unit root tests show that all variables are integrated of order one. Causality results suggest that real gross domestic product (GDP) drives both energy use and CO2 emissions. Forecast error variance decompositions (FEVDs) evidence that the errors in real per capita GDP are mainly due to uncertainty in GDP itself, while the errors in predicting the energy consumption and the CO2 emissions are sensitive to disturbances in the other two equations.     The globe is now in ecological turmoil as a result of the unrelenting increase in global warming. As a result, governments worldwide are committing to decarbonizing the environment, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) playing an important role in this effort. Hence, this paper evaluates the nonlinear (asymmetric) impact of natural gas consumption on renewable energy consumption and economic growth in the KSA and the UAE utilizing data stretching from 1990 to 2020. The study also considers other drivers of renewable energy consumption and economic growth, such as trade openness and CO2 emissions. The study utilizes nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) to evaluate these associations. The outcomes of bounds nonlinear ARDL (NARDL), affirm the long-run association between the variables in both countries. The nonlinear results show that positive and negative shocks in natural gas consumption have a negative impact on renewable energy in both UAE and KSA. In contrast, positive and negative shocks in natural gas consumption impact economic growth positively. The study proposed vital policy recommendations based on these results.

    PurposeThis study aims to explore the relationship among energy consumption, real income, financial development and oil prices in Italy over the period 1960-2014.Design/methodology/approachDifferent econometric techniques – such as the General Methods of Moment (GMM) or the AutoRegressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) bounds test – are usually used in the empirical analysis. Moreover, both the Toda and Yamamoto causality tests and the Granger causality tests are applied to the data.FindingsThe results of unit root and stationarity tests show that the variables are non-stationary at levels, but stationary in first-differences form, or I(1). The ARDL boundsF-test reveals an evidence of a long-run relationship among the four variables at 1% significance level. Moreover, an increase in real GDP and oil prices has a significant effect on energy consumption in the long run. The coefficients of estimated error correction term are also negative and statistically significant. In addition, the paper explores the causal relationship between the variables by using a VAR framework, with Toda and Yamamoto but also Granger causality tests, within both multivariate and bivariate systems. The findings indicate that energy consumption is affected by real GDP.Originality/valueThe study also filled the literature gap of applying ARDL technique to examine this relevant issue for Italy.

    This study aims to investigate the nexus among waste generation, economic growth, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a circular economy framework for the case of Switzerland. Using two different empirical approaches (Dynamic Auto-Regressive Distributed Lags and Fuzzy Cognitive Maps), time-series results show that municipal waste and economic growth have both a short- and a long-run impact on GHG emissions. Moreover, causality analyses evidence the presence of a unidirectional causal flow running from municipal waste and economic growth to greenhouse gas emissions, while a bidirectional causality between municipal waste and economic growth. The results of the static analysis of the municipal solid waste cognitive map show that the most significant system variables relate to the domains of “policy drivers” (education and awareness campaigns and extended producer responsibility) and “environment and health” (GHG emissions).     This study aims to investigate the nexus among waste generation, economic growth, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a circular economy framework for the case of Switzerland. Using two different empirical approaches (Dynamic Auto-Regressive Distributed Lags and Fuzzy Cognitive Maps), time-series results show that municipal waste and economic growth have both a short- and a long-run impact on GHG emissions. Moreover, causality analyses evidence the presence of a unidirectional causal flow running from municipal waste and economic growth to greenhouse gas emissions, while a bidirectional causality between municipal waste and economic growth. The results of the static analysis of the municipal solid waste cognitive map show that the most significant system variables relate to the domains of “policy drivers” (education and awareness campaigns and extended producer responsibility) and “environment and health” (GHG emissions).
