The addition of 50mM ethanol to cell cultures both from control and ethanol pretreated animals almost completely maintained, at least for 72hr, the P4502E1-dependent aniline hydroxylase (AnH) activity and the 2E1 immunodetectable apoprotein content at the levels of the corresponding 4-hr plated hepatocytes. On the contrary, other P450-dependent monooxygenase activities, as assayed by testosterone hydroxylases, kept decreasing falling-after 72hr of culture-to the levels of the 4-hr plated hepatocytes. In both cases, in the absence of ethanol, a rapid decline of AnH activities and 2E1 apoprotein contents were also observed, attaining undetectable levels at 72hr. The hybridizable 2E1 mRNA also rapidly declined in both cultures, but such decline was not significantly altered by the presence of 50mM ethanol in the culture medium. Furthermore, we show that P4502E1 in the liver possesses a rapid degradation phase with a half-life of about 6hr. Thus, in the hamster, P4502E1 appears regulated at post-translational level, as in rat, probably by a protein stabilization mechanism.

The effect of external EGR on knock was evaluated using a CFR engine. Combustion pressure was sampled on a time basis. A band pass filter in the time domain was applied to the pressure cycles. Five knock indices were calculated for each combustion cycle. The problem to quantify knock intensity was focused. At this extent, measurements were carried out on standard iso-octane-n-heptane blends in the test conditions used for the determ of the Motor Method Octane Number (MON). Knock intensity was varied acting on compression ratio. For each index, the conditions of absence of knock were determined using motored cycles. The indices were compared and one of them, showing the lowest C.O.V., was selected for further measurements. The effect of EGR on test fuels having different composition was evaluated varying the compression ratio, at fixed ignition timing. In this way, the same level of detonation, obtained in the absence of EGR, was realized with different amounts of external EGR. Percent variation of compression ratio was used to compare the ability of fuels, having different octane number, to tolerate compression ratio increase in presence of EGR. In particular, the tests were carried out on a matrix of twelve fuels with three levels of EGR. The results show that with all tested fuels the percent increase of compression ratio is strongly dependent on EGR.

In the present work, an experimental study on a lab-scale adsorption refrigerator, based on activated carbon/ethanol working pair is reported. An extensive testing campaign has been carried out at the CNR ITAE laboratory, with multiple aims. First, the performance has been evaluated in terms of both COP and Specific Cooling Power (SCP), under different boundary conditions, including both air conditioning and refrigeration applications. Attractive SCPs, up to 180 W/kg and 70 W/kg for air conditioning and refrigeration, respectively, were measured. Under the same conditions, COP between 0.17 and 0.08 were obtained. In addition, different management strategies, namely, heat recovery between adsorbers and re-allocation of phase durations, were evaluated to identify their influence on the system. Both strategies confirmed the possibility of increasing COP and SCP up to 40% and 25%, respectively. Moreover, a design analysis based on the experimental results has been carried out, to suggest possible improvements of the system. The obtained results demonstrated the possibility of employing a non-toxic refrigerant like ethanol reaching performance comparable with other harmful refrigerants like ammonia and methanol.

The official involvement of Italy in Antarctic research dates back to 1985, when Mario Zucchelli Station (the former Terra Nova Bay Station) was established in Terra Nova Bay. Italy joined the Antarctic Treaty in 1987. This article is an overview of the wide-ranging research in marine biology performed in the last three decades by the author's team in the Ross Sea. Fundamental questions have been addressed, related to cold adaptations--with special attention to the molecular bases--evolved by marine organisms along with progressive cooling in this geographic area, also analysed in comparison with other important areas, such as the Peninsula, the Weddell Sea, the sub-Antarctic and the Arctic. The basic stepping stone of this research was the integration of ecophysiology with molecular aspects, in the general framework of biodiversity, adaptation and evolution. Investigations have addressed a number of Ross Sea taxa, comprising fish, birds, urchins, whales, seals and bacteria. Its significance has special meaning in view of the control that Antarctica exerts on the world climate and ocean circulation, which has awakened great interest in the evolutionary biology of the organisms that live there.

The present work introduces the conceptual design of the optics for a spectral-splitting and light-guiding photovoltaic (PV) four-terminal (4T) module with appealing features for bifacial operation. The geometry here described performs low-gain 2D concentration in the visible (VIS) spectrum and can couple a Si solar cell to a wide-bandgap (WG) one. We analyze and discuss the conditions of applicability of the solution from the optical viewpoint. The performance analysis has been performed using commercial ray-tracing software (ZEMAX OpticStudio), by admitting direct and isotropically diffused solar irradiation at standard AM1.5G spectrum.

The present work introduces the conceptual design of the optics for a spectral-splitting and light-guiding photovoltaic (PV) four-terminal (4T) module with appealing features for bifacial operation. The geometry here described performs low-gain 2D concentration in the visible (VIS) spectrum and can couple a Si solar cell to a wide-bandgap (WG) one. We analyze and discuss the conditions of applicability of the solution from the optical viewpoint. The performance analysis has been performed using commercial ray-tracing software (ZEMAX OpticStudio), by admitting direct and isotropically diffused solar irradiation at standard AM1.5G spectrum.

A series of 33 different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were studied by far infrared spectroscopy (terahertz spectroscopy) in the spectral range comprised between 600 and 50 cm(-1). In addition to common PAHs like naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, picene, pyrene, benzo[α]pyrene, and perylene, also quite unusual PAHs were studied like tetracene, pentacene, acenaphtene, acenaphtylene, triphenylene, and decacyclene. A series of alkylated naphthalenes and anthracenes were studied as well as methypyrene. Partially or totally hydrogenated PAHs were also object of the present investigation, ranging from tetrahydronaphthalene (tetralin) to decahydronaphthalene (decalin), 9,10-dihydroanthracene, 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene, hexahydropyrene, and dodecahydrotriphenylene. Finally, the large and quite rare PAHs coronene, quaterrylene, hexabenzocoronene, and dicoronylene were studied by far infrared spectroscopy. The resulting reference spectra were used in the interpretation of the chemical structure of asphaltenes (as extracted from a heavy petroleum fraction and from bitumen), the chemical structures of other petroleum fractions known as DAE (distillate aromatic extract) and RAE (residual aromatic extract), and a possible interpretation of components of the chemical structure of anthracite coal. Asphaltenes, heavy petroleum fractions, and coal were proposed as model compounds for the interpretation of the emission spectra of certain proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) with a good matching in the mid infrared between the band pattern of the PPNe emission spectra and the spectra of these oil fractions or coal. Although this study was finalized in an astrochemical context, it may find application also in the petroleum and coal chemistry.

Acute ethanol administration stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and increases (3a,5a)-3-hydroxypregnan-20-one (3a,5a-THP) levels in rat brain and plasma. Increased 3a,5a-THP levels contribute to the anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative and pro-aggressive actions of ethanol. We now explored the effects of ethanol on brain and plasma 3a,5a-THP levels in C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) mice, two inbred strains with different sensitivity to behavioral effects of alcohol. Mice were injected with ethanol (2 g/kg, i.p.) or saline and were sacrificed 1 h later. 3a,5a-THP levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in cerebral cortex and by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in plasma. Ethanol increased cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP (+38%, P < 0.005) in D2 but not B6 mice. In contrast, plasma 3a,5a-THP levels were decreased (-27%, P < 0.01) in B6 mice, but did not change in D2 mice. These differential effects of ethanol on 3a,5a-THP levels may be due to the different genetic background of these strains. To further explore this hypothesis, we examined ethanol-induced changes in cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP levels of some B6xD2 (BXD) recombinant inbred strains. Basal 3a,5a-THP levels across 8 BXD strains range between 1.81 and 3.72 ng/g, equivalent to a 2-fold genetic variation [F(9,79) = 6.27, P < 0.0001] and heritability of 0.40. The ethanol-induced changes in cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP levels range between +4 and +63% and were negatively correlated (Spearman -0.82, P = 0.02) with behavioral phenotypes of ethanol consumption previously determined in the BXD strains and available in the GeneNetwork database (www.genenetwork.org). Greater ethanol intake was associated with smaller elevation of 3a,5a-THP following ethanol challenge across these BXD mice. This preliminary finding supports the hypothesis that neurosteroid responses to ethanol may be putative biomarkers of excessive alcohol consumption. Future studies will be required to further explore this hypothesis.

A new dataset of 54 daily Italian downward surface solar radiation (SSR) records has been set up over the 1959- 2013 period. Particular emphasis is placed upon the quality control and the homogenization of the records in order to eliminate gross-errors and not climatic signals contained in the original records. This step has been shown as necessary due to the large differences obtained between the raw and homogenized dataset, especially during the first decades of the study period as a consequence of instrument changes and recalibrations. In addition, SSR series under clear-sky conditions were obtained considering only the cloudless days from corresponding groundbased cloudiness observations. Subsequently, the records were interpolated onto a regular grid and clustered in two regions, Northern and Southern Italy, which were averaged in order to get all-sky and clear-sky regional SSR records. Their temporal evolution is presented, and possible reasons for differences between the two conditions and the two regions are discussed in order to understand which part of the SSR variability depends on aerosols or clouds. Specifically, the all-sky SSR records show a decrease until the mid-1980s (dimming period) and a following increase until the end of the series (brightening period) even if the strength and the persistence of the tendencies are not the same in all seasons. The clear-sky records present stronger tendencies than the all-sky records during the dimming period in all seasons, and during the brightening period in winter and autumn, suggesting that under all-sky the variations caused by the variations of the aerosol concentrations have been partially masked by cloud cover variations, especially during the dimming period. The peculiarity of a stronger dimming in the South than in the North under clear-sky could be a consequence of a significant contribution of mineral dust variations to the SSR variability.

The unprecedented improvement of the quality of life occurred in some regions of the world during the last century has been predominantly powered by fossil fuels, which still provide over 80% of our primary energy supply. This share has to be drastically reduced to curb the effects of a catastrophic climate change. The chief candidate to phase out the oil-gas-coal age is solar energy, which is available in several direct and indirect forms and is by far the most abundant, sustainable, and safe energy source we can rely on [1,2]. The transition to a solar-powered civilization will be a long and difficult process in which some key trends can be already envisaged: (1) growing share of electricity in energy end use [3]; (2) increase of efficiency in energy production [1,2]; (3) establishment of technologies for the manufacturing of solar fuels [4]; (4) recycling the equipment used for converting renewable energy flows that is often made of materials available in limited supply [5]. Solutions to the tremendous challenge of energy transition require the mobilization of huge human and economic resources in several scientific and technological fields, with chemistry playing a prominent role. The unprecedented improvement of the quality of life occurred in some regions of the world during the last century has been predominantly powered by fossil fuels, which still provide over 80% of our primary energy supply. This share has to be drastically reduced to curb the effects of a catastrophic climate change. The chief candidate to phase out the oil-gas-coal age is solar energy, which is available in several direct and indirect forms and is by far the most abundant, sustainable, and safe energy source we can rely on [1,2]. The transition to a solar-powered civilization will be a long and difficult process in which some key trends can be already envisaged: (1) growing share of electricity in energy end use [3]; (2) increase of efficiency in energy production [1,2]; (3) establishment of technologies for the manufacturing of solar fuels [4]; (4) recycling the equipment used for converting renewable energy flows that is often made of materials available in limited supply [5]. Solutions to the tremendous challenge of energy transition require the mobilization of huge human and economic resources in several scientific and technological fields, with chemistry playing a prominent role. In the present review, we present data obtained using animal models which suggest that neurotrophic factors, particularly NGF and BDNF, might be implicated in mechanism(s) leading to a condition associated with schizophrenic-like behaviors. The hypothesis that neurotrophins of the NGF family can be implicated in some maldevelopmental aspects of schizophrenia is supported by findings indicating that the constitutive levels of NGF and BDNF are affected in schizophrenic patients.

The addition of 50mM ethanol to cell cultures both from control and ethanol pretreated animals almost completely maintained, at least for 72hr, the P4502E1-dependent aniline hydroxylase (AnH) activity and the 2E1 immunodetectable apoprotein content at the levels of the corresponding 4-hr plated hepatocytes. On the contrary, other P450-dependent monooxygenase activities, as assayed by testosterone hydroxylases, kept decreasing falling-after 72hr of culture-to the levels of the 4-hr plated hepatocytes. In both cases, in the absence of ethanol, a rapid decline of AnH activities and 2E1 apoprotein contents were also observed, attaining undetectable levels at 72hr. The hybridizable 2E1 mRNA also rapidly declined in both cultures, but such decline was not significantly altered by the presence of 50mM ethanol in the culture medium. Furthermore, we show that P4502E1 in the liver possesses a rapid degradation phase with a half-life of about 6hr. Thus, in the hamster, P4502E1 appears regulated at post-translational level, as in rat, probably by a protein stabilization mechanism.

The effect of external EGR on knock was evaluated using a CFR engine. Combustion pressure was sampled on a time basis. A band pass filter in the time domain was applied to the pressure cycles. Five knock indices were calculated for each combustion cycle. The problem to quantify knock intensity was focused. At this extent, measurements were carried out on standard iso-octane-n-heptane blends in the test conditions used for the determ of the Motor Method Octane Number (MON). Knock intensity was varied acting on compression ratio. For each index, the conditions of absence of knock were determined using motored cycles. The indices were compared and one of them, showing the lowest C.O.V., was selected for further measurements. The effect of EGR on test fuels having different composition was evaluated varying the compression ratio, at fixed ignition timing. In this way, the same level of detonation, obtained in the absence of EGR, was realized with different amounts of external EGR. Percent variation of compression ratio was used to compare the ability of fuels, having different octane number, to tolerate compression ratio increase in presence of EGR. In particular, the tests were carried out on a matrix of twelve fuels with three levels of EGR. The results show that with all tested fuels the percent increase of compression ratio is strongly dependent on EGR.

In the present work, an experimental study on a lab-scale adsorption refrigerator, based on activated carbon/ethanol working pair is reported. An extensive testing campaign has been carried out at the CNR ITAE laboratory, with multiple aims. First, the performance has been evaluated in terms of both COP and Specific Cooling Power (SCP), under different boundary conditions, including both air conditioning and refrigeration applications. Attractive SCPs, up to 180 W/kg and 70 W/kg for air conditioning and refrigeration, respectively, were measured. Under the same conditions, COP between 0.17 and 0.08 were obtained. In addition, different management strategies, namely, heat recovery between adsorbers and re-allocation of phase durations, were evaluated to identify their influence on the system. Both strategies confirmed the possibility of increasing COP and SCP up to 40% and 25%, respectively. Moreover, a design analysis based on the experimental results has been carried out, to suggest possible improvements of the system. The obtained results demonstrated the possibility of employing a non-toxic refrigerant like ethanol reaching performance comparable with other harmful refrigerants like ammonia and methanol.

In the present work, an experimental study on a lab-scale adsorption refrigerator, based on activated carbon/ethanol working pair is reported. An extensive testing campaign has been carried out at the CNR ITAE laboratory, with multiple aims. First, the performance has been evaluated in terms of both COP and Specific Cooling Power (SCP), under different boundary conditions, including both air conditioning and refrigeration applications. Attractive SCPs, up to 180 W/kg and 70 W/kg for air conditioning and refrigeration, respectively, were measured. Under the same conditions, COP between 0.17 and 0.08 were obtained. In addition, different management strategies, namely, heat recovery between adsorbers and re-allocation of phase durations, were evaluated to identify their influence on the system. Both strategies confirmed the possibility of increasing COP and SCP up to 40% and 25%, respectively. Moreover, a design analysis based on the experimental results has been carried out, to suggest possible improvements of the system. The obtained results demonstrated the possibility of employing a non-toxic refrigerant like ethanol reaching performance comparable with other harmful refrigerants like ammonia and methanol.

The official involvement of Italy in Antarctic research dates back to 1985, when Mario Zucchelli Station (the former Terra Nova Bay Station) was established in Terra Nova Bay. Italy joined the Antarctic Treaty in 1987. This article is an overview of the wide-ranging research in marine biology performed in the last three decades by the author's team in the Ross Sea. Fundamental questions have been addressed, related to cold adaptations--with special attention to the molecular bases--evolved by marine organisms along with progressive cooling in this geographic area, also analysed in comparison with other important areas, such as the Peninsula, the Weddell Sea, the sub-Antarctic and the Arctic. The basic stepping stone of this research was the integration of ecophysiology with molecular aspects, in the general framework of biodiversity, adaptation and evolution. Investigations have addressed a number of Ross Sea taxa, comprising fish, birds, urchins, whales, seals and bacteria. Its significance has special meaning in view of the control that Antarctica exerts on the world climate and ocean circulation, which has awakened great interest in the evolutionary biology of the organisms that live there.

The present work introduces the conceptual design of the optics for a spectral-splitting and light-guiding photovoltaic (PV) four-terminal (4T) module with appealing features for bifacial operation. The geometry here described performs low-gain 2D concentration in the visible (VIS) spectrum and can couple a Si solar cell to a wide-bandgap (WG) one. We analyze and discuss the conditions of applicability of the solution from the optical viewpoint. The performance analysis has been performed using commercial ray-tracing software (ZEMAX OpticStudio), by admitting direct and isotropically diffused solar irradiation at standard AM1.5G spectrum.

A series of 33 different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were studied by far infrared spectroscopy (terahertz spectroscopy) in the spectral range comprised between 600 and 50 cm(-1). In addition to common PAHs like naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, picene, pyrene, benzo[α]pyrene, and perylene, also quite unusual PAHs were studied like tetracene, pentacene, acenaphtene, acenaphtylene, triphenylene, and decacyclene. A series of alkylated naphthalenes and anthracenes were studied as well as methypyrene. Partially or totally hydrogenated PAHs were also object of the present investigation, ranging from tetrahydronaphthalene (tetralin) to decahydronaphthalene (decalin), 9,10-dihydroanthracene, 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene, hexahydropyrene, and dodecahydrotriphenylene. Finally, the large and quite rare PAHs coronene, quaterrylene, hexabenzocoronene, and dicoronylene were studied by far infrared spectroscopy. The resulting reference spectra were used in the interpretation of the chemical structure of asphaltenes (as extracted from a heavy petroleum fraction and from bitumen), the chemical structures of other petroleum fractions known as DAE (distillate aromatic extract) and RAE (residual aromatic extract), and a possible interpretation of components of the chemical structure of anthracite coal. Asphaltenes, heavy petroleum fractions, and coal were proposed as model compounds for the interpretation of the emission spectra of certain proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) with a good matching in the mid infrared between the band pattern of the PPNe emission spectra and the spectra of these oil fractions or coal. Although this study was finalized in an astrochemical context, it may find application also in the petroleum and coal chemistry.

Acute ethanol administration stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and increases (3a,5a)-3-hydroxypregnan-20-one (3a,5a-THP) levels in rat brain and plasma. Increased 3a,5a-THP levels contribute to the anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative and pro-aggressive actions of ethanol. We now explored the effects of ethanol on brain and plasma 3a,5a-THP levels in C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) mice, two inbred strains with different sensitivity to behavioral effects of alcohol. Mice were injected with ethanol (2 g/kg, i.p.) or saline and were sacrificed 1 h later. 3a,5a-THP levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in cerebral cortex and by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in plasma. Ethanol increased cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP (+38%, P < 0.005) in D2 but not B6 mice. In contrast, plasma 3a,5a-THP levels were decreased (-27%, P < 0.01) in B6 mice, but did not change in D2 mice. These differential effects of ethanol on 3a,5a-THP levels may be due to the different genetic background of these strains. To further explore this hypothesis, we examined ethanol-induced changes in cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP levels of some B6xD2 (BXD) recombinant inbred strains. Basal 3a,5a-THP levels across 8 BXD strains range between 1.81 and 3.72 ng/g, equivalent to a 2-fold genetic variation [F(9,79) = 6.27, P < 0.0001] and heritability of 0.40. The ethanol-induced changes in cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP levels range between +4 and +63% and were negatively correlated (Spearman -0.82, P = 0.02) with behavioral phenotypes of ethanol consumption previously determined in the BXD strains and available in the GeneNetwork database (www.genenetwork.org). Greater ethanol intake was associated with smaller elevation of 3a,5a-THP following ethanol challenge across these BXD mice. This preliminary finding supports the hypothesis that neurosteroid responses to ethanol may be putative biomarkers of excessive alcohol consumption. Future studies will be required to further explore this hypothesis.

We now explored the effects of ethanol on brain and plasma 3a,5a-THP levels in C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) mice, two inbred strains with different sensitivity to behavioral effects of alcohol. Mice were injected with ethanol (2 g/kg, i.p.) or saline and were sacrificed 1 h later. 3a,5a-THP levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in cerebral cortex and by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in plasma. Ethanol increased cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP (+38%, P < 0.005) in D2 but not B6 mice. In contrast, plasma 3a,5a-THP levels were decreased (-27%, P < 0.01) in B6 mice, but did not change in D2 mice. These differential effects of ethanol on 3a,5a-THP levels may be due to the different genetic background of these strains. To further explore this hypothesis, we examined ethanol-induced changes in cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP levels of some B6xD2 (BXD) recombinant inbred strains. Basal 3a,5a-THP levels across 8 BXD strains range between 1.81 and 3.72 ng/g, equivalent to a 2-fold genetic variation [F(9,79) = 6.27, P < 0.0001] and heritability of 0.40. The ethanol-induced changes in cerebral cortical 3a,5a-THP levels range between +4 and +63% and were negatively correlated (Spearman -0.82, P = 0.02) with behavioral phenotypes of ethanol consumption previously determined in the BXD strains and available in the GeneNetwork database (www.genenetwork.org). Greater ethanol intake was associated with smaller elevation of 3a,5a-THP following ethanol challenge across these BXD mice. This preliminary finding supports the hypothesis that neurosteroid responses to ethanol may be putative biomarkers of excessive alcohol consumption. Future studies will be required to further explore this hypothesis.

A new dataset of 54 daily Italian downward surface solar radiation (SSR) records has been set up over the 1959- 2013 period. Particular emphasis is placed upon the quality control and the homogenization of the records in order to eliminate gross-errors and not climatic signals contained in the original records. This step has been shown as necessary due to the large differences obtained between the raw and homogenized dataset, especially during the first decades of the study period as a consequence of instrument changes and recalibrations. In addition, SSR series under clear-sky conditions were obtained considering only the cloudless days from corresponding groundbased cloudiness observations. Subsequently, the records were interpolated onto a regular grid and clustered in two regions, Northern and Southern Italy, which were averaged in order to get all-sky and clear-sky regional SSR records. Their temporal evolution is presented, and possible reasons for differences between the two conditions and the two regions are discussed in order to understand which part of the SSR variability depends on aerosols or clouds. Specifically, the all-sky SSR records show a decrease until the mid-1980s (dimming period) and a following increase until the end of the series (brightening period) even if the strength and the persistence of the tendencies are not the same in all seasons. The clear-sky records present stronger tendencies than the all-sky records during the dimming period in all seasons, and during the brightening period in winter and autumn, suggesting that under all-sky the variations caused by the variations of the aerosol concentrations have been partially masked by cloud cover variations, especially during the dimming period. The peculiarity of a stronger dimming in the South than in the North under clear-sky could be a consequence of a significant contribution of mineral dust variations to the SSR variability.

The unprecedented improvement of the quality of life occurred in some regions of the world during the last century has been predominantly powered by fossil fuels, which still provide over 80% of our primary energy supply. This share has to be drastically reduced to curb the effects of a catastrophic climate change. The chief candidate to phase out the oil-gas-coal age is solar energy, which is available in several direct and indirect forms and is by far the most abundant, sustainable, and safe energy source we can rely on [1,2]. The transition to a solar-powered civilization will be a long and difficult process in which some key trends can be already envisaged: (1) growing share of electricity in energy end use [3]; (2) increase of efficiency in energy production [1,2]; (3) establishment of technologies for the manufacturing of solar fuels [4]; (4) recycling the equipment used for converting renewable energy flows that is often made of materials available in limited supply [5]. Solutions to the tremendous challenge of energy transition require the mobilization of huge human and economic resources in several scientific and technological fields, with chemistry playing a prominent role. In this broader context, some research results from our laboratories in the fields of materials for solar energy conversion and efficient lighting technologies will be illustrated [6,7]. [1] N. We have recently shown that environmental changes, aggressive behavior and anxiety-like responses alter both circulating and brain basal NGF levels. In the present review, we present data obtained using animal models which suggest that neurotrophic factors, particularly NGF and BDNF, might be implicated in mechanism(s) leading to a condition associated with schizophrenic-like behaviors. The hypothesis that neurotrophins of the NGF family can be implicated in some maldevelopmental aspects of schizophrenia is supported by findings indicating that the constitutive levels of NGF and BDNF are affected in schizophrenic patients.
