Metal hydrides are potential candidates for generalized energy storage, when coupled with fuel cell units and/or batteries. An overview of ongoing research is reported and discussed in this review work on the light of application as hydrogen and heat storage matrices, as well as thin films for hydrogen optical sensors. These include a selection of single-metal hydrides, Ti-V(Fe) based intermetallics, multi-principal element alloys (high-entropy alloys), and a series of novel synthetically accessible metal borohydrides. Metal hydride materials can be as well of important usefulness for MH-based electrodes with high capacity (e.g. MgH2 ~ 2000 mAh g-1) and solid-state electrolytes displaying high ionic conductivity suitable, respectively, for Li-ion and Li/Mg battery technologies. To boost further research and development directions some characterization techniques dedicated to the study of M-H interactions, their equilibrium reactions, and additional quantification of hydrogen concentration in thin film and bulk hydrides are presented at the end of this manuscript.

Open and hidden heavy-flavor physics in high-energy nuclear collisions are entering a new and exciting stage towards reaching a clearer understanding of the new experimental results with the possibility to link them directly to the advancement in lattice Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD). Recent results from experiments and theoretical developments regarding open and hidden heavy-flavor dynamics have been debated at the Lorentz Workshop Tomography of the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Heavy Quarks, which was held in October 2016 in Leiden, The Netherlands. In this contribution, we summarize identified common understandings and developed strategies for the upcoming five years, which aim at achieving a profound knowledge of the dynamical properties of the quark-gluon plasma.

And indeed, with the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters such as flooding, heat waves and droughts, it is becoming harder not to see a looming climate catastrophe unless massive and immediate action is taken. Astronomers worldwide are well aware of our peril and are demanding astronomy organizations to act — nearly 3,000 have signed Astronomers for Planet Earth’s open letter demanding climate action from our institutions.

The B mesons are fully reconstructed in a large number of hadronic final states and the three channels are identified using a beam-constrained-mass variable. The shapes of the exclusive cross sections show oscillatory behavior with several maxima and minima. The results are obtained using data collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider.

Abstract Measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients with two- and multi-particle cumulants for inclusive charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 $$ s N N = 5.02 and 2.76 TeV are reported in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 0.8 and transverse momentum 0.2 < p T < 50 GeV/c. The full data sample collected by the ALICE detector in 2015 (2010), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.7 (2.0) μb−1 in the centrality range 0-80%, is analysed. Flow coefficients up to the sixth flow harmonic (v 6) are reported and a detailed comparison among results at the two energies is carried out. The p T dependence of anisotropic flow coefficients and its evolution with respect to centrality and harmonic number n are investigated. An approximate power-law scaling of the form v n (p T) ∼ p T n/3 is observed for all flow harmonics at low p T (0.2 < p T < 3 GeV/c). At the same time, the ratios v n /v m n/ m are observed to be essentially independent of p T for most centralities up to about p T = 10 GeV/c. Analysing the differences among higher-order cumulants of elliptic flow (v 2), which have different sensitivities to flow fluctuations, a measurement of the standardised skewness of the event-by-event v 2 distribution P(v 2) is reported and constraints on its higher moments are provided. The Elliptic Power distribution is used to parametrise P(v 2), extracting its parameters from fits to cumulants. The measurements are compared to different model predictions in order to discriminate among initial-state models and to constrain the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy-density ratio.

Abstract Inclusive J/ψ production is studied in minimum-bias proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5.02 TeV by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the dielectron decay channel down to zero transverse momentum p T, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of L int = 19.4 ± 0.4 nb −1. The measured p T-integrated inclusive J/ψ production cross sec- tion is dσ/dy = 5.64 ± 0.22(stat.) ± 0.33(syst.) ± 0.12(lumi.) μb. The p T-differential cross section d2 σ/dp Tdy is measured in the p T range 0–10 GeV/c and compared with state-of- the-art QCD calculations. The J/ψ 〈p T〉 and $$ \left\langle {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^2\right\rangle $$ p T 2 are extracted and compared with results obtained at other collision energies.

The grasslands were sampled in April 2018 for the following traits: bulk canopy height; weight of fresh and dry biomass; dry weight percentage of the plant functional types (PFT) non-green vegetation, legumes, non-leguminous forbs, and graminoids; total green area index (GAI) and PFT-specific GAI; plant water content; plant carbon and nitrogen content (community values and PFT-specific values); as well as leaf mass per area (LMA) of PFT. In addition, a species specific inventory of the plots was conducted in June 2020 and provides plot-level information on grassland type and plant species composition. The data set was obtained within the framework of the SUSALPS project (“Sustainable use of alpine and pre-alpine grassland soils in a changing climate”;https://www.susalps.de/) to providein-situdata for the calibration and validation of remote sensing based models to estimate grassland traits.

Renewable energy sources are among the most important ingredients for the development of a human society with sustainable environmental footprint. Among these, photovoltaics (PV) plays a key role and is therefore a field of intense research. The key parameters of a solar cell technology includes not only the energy conversion efficiency but also the operating lifetime and the overall cost of the energy produced. The latter must also be compared with other energy sources. The optimization of all these different aspects involves research across the whole photovoltaics value chain, starting from material science up to system optimization. Development of new solar cell device concepts is as important as search for new materials with more suitable optoelectronic properties or improved approaches for PV module design and integration in power distribution systems. This requires a comprehensive view on PV technology across all scales, from the atomic to the macroscopic and industrial scale. An important aspect of PV research and of development of new devices and systems, is theoretical modeling as an indispensable tool for both basic understanding and device optimization. This involves modeling also on all scales, from the microscopic properties of materials and nanostructures up to the behavior of PV modules. During the last decade, multiscale approaches have seen increasing interest for application in numerical simulation of electronic devices. In particular, modeling and understanding of advanced photovoltaic devices are expected to benefit from multiscale modeling, which allows describing consistently both macroscopic device behavior and local microscopic processes governing light absorption, loss mechanisms, carrier transport, and extraction. In fact, many advanced PV concepts rely on effects or contain structural features that are insufficiently described by standard numerical simulation approaches or semianalytic models, both regarding electronic and optical properties. The different length scales of the electronic and optical degrees of freedoms specifically lead to an intrinsic need for multiscale simulation, which is accentuated in many advanced photovoltaics concepts including nanostructured regions. Moreover, the active layers in solar cells generally require to have a certain thickness and a large overall device area, in order to absorb a sufficient amount of light. This special issue is an attempt to collect articles on modeling of PV devices and systems on all scales. It includes two experimental articles, one shedding some light on photoreflectance measurements when probing above the pump beam energy and the other discussing morphology in hybrid lead halide perovskite solar cells. One article describes numerical modeling of Cu2O on Si tandem cells based on a semiempirical approach. A further contribution shows a physics-based model of a quantum dot solar cell, including a comparison with experimental data. The remaining two papers deal with system relevant aspects, namely, power point tracking and electrical inverters for connecting PV modules or power plants with appliances.

Karst.), silver fir (Abies alba Mill.), and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), cover about 10 × 106 ha at elevations between ∼600 and 1600 m a.s.l. These forests provide invaluable ecosystem services. However, the growth of these forests and the competition among their main species are expected to be strongly affected by climate warming. In this study, we analyzed the growth development of spruce, fir, and beech in moist mixed mountain forests in Europe over the last 300 years. Based on tree-ring analyses on long-term observational plots, we found for all three species (i) a nondecelerating, linear diameter growth trend spanning more than 300 years; (ii) increased growth levels and trends, the latter being particularly pronounced for fir and beech; and (iii) an elevation-dependent change of fir and beech growth. Whereas in the past, the growth was highest at lower elevations, today’s growth is superior at higher elevations. This spatiotemporal pattern indicates significant changes in the growth and interspecific competition at the expense of spruce in mixed mountain forests. We discuss possible causes, consequences, and silvicultural implications of these distinct growth changes in mixed mountain forests.

In Europe, mixed mountain forests, primarily comprised of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), silver fir (Abies alba Mill.), and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), cover about 10 × 106 ha at elevations between ∼600 and 1600 m a.s.l.
