    The electrical ageing of photovoltaic modules during extended damp-heat tests at different stress levels is investigated for three types of crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules with different backsheets, encapsulants and cell types. Deploying different stress levels allows determination of an equivalent stress dose function, which is a first step towards a lifetime prediction of devices. The derived humidity dose is used to characterise the degradation of power as well as that of the solar cell's equivalent circuit parameters calculated from measured current–voltage characteristics. An application of this to the samples demonstrates different modes in the degradation and thus enables better understanding of the module's underlying ageing mechanisms. The analysis of changes in the solar cell equivalent circuit parameters identified the primary contributors to the power degradation and distinguished the potential ageing mechanism for each types of module investigated in this paper. © 2016 The Authors.     Electric water heaters have the ability to store energy in their water buffer without impacting the comfort of the end user. This feature makes them a prime candidate for residential demand response. However, the stochastic and nonlinear dynamics of electric water heaters, makes it challenging to harness their flexibility. Driven by this challenge, this paper formulates the underlying sequential decision-making problem as a Markov decision process and uses techniques from reinforcement learning. Specifically, we apply an auto-encoder network to find a compact feature representation of the sensor measurements, which helps to mitigate the curse of dimensionality. A wellknown batch reinforcement learning technique, fitted Q-iteration, is used to find a control policy, given this feature representation. In a simulation-based experiment using an electric water heater with 50 temperature sensors, the proposed method was able to achieve good policies much faster than when using the full state information. In a lab experiment, we apply fitted Q-iteration to an electric water heater with eight temperature sensors. Further reducing the state vector did not improve the results of fitted Q-iteration. The results of the lab experiment, spanning 40 days, indicate that compared to a thermostat controller, the presented approach was able to reduce the total cost of energy consumption of the electric water heater by 15%.     AbstractMixed‐halide lead perovskites have attracted significant attention in the field of photovoltaics and other optoelectronic applications due to their promising bandgap tunability and device performance. Here, the changes in photoluminescence and photoconductance of solution‐processed triple‐cation mixed‐halide (Cs0.06MA0.15FA0.79)Pb(Br0.4I0.6)3 perovskite films (MA: methylammonium, FA: formamidinium) are studied under solar‐equivalent illumination. It is found that the illumination leads to localized surface sites of iodide‐rich perovskite intermixed with passivating PbI2 material. Time‐ and spectrally resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal that photoexcited charges efficiently transfer to the passivated iodide‐rich perovskite surface layer, leading to high local carrier densities on these sites. The carriers on this surface layer therefore recombine with a high radiative efficiency, with the photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the film under solar excitation densities increasing from 3% to over 45%. At higher excitation densities, nonradiative Auger recombination starts to dominate due to the extremely high concentration of charges on the surface layer. This work reveals new insight into phase segregation of mixed‐halide mixed‐cation perovskites, as well as routes to highly luminescent films by controlling charge density and transfer in novel device structures.

    The ATLAS Inner Detector is a composite tracking system consisting of silicon pixels, silicon strips and straw tubes in a 2 T magnetic field. Its installation was completed in August 2008 and the detector took part in data- taking with single LHC beams and cosmic rays. The initial detector operation, hardware commissioning and in-situ calibrations are described. Tracking performance has been measured with 7.6 million cosmic-ray events, collected using a tracking trigger and reconstructed with modular pattern-recognition and fitting software. The intrinsic hit efficiency and tracking trigger efficiencies are close to 100%. Lorentz angle measurements for both electrons and holes, specific energy-loss calibration and transition radiation turn-on measurements have been performed. Different alignment techniques have been used to reconstruct the detector geometry. After the initial alignment, a transverse impact parameter resolution of 22.1+/-0.9 ��m and a relative momentum resolution ��p/p = (4.83+/-0.16) \times 10-4 GeV-1 \times pT have been measured for high momentum tracks. 34 pages, 25 figures

    Carbon capture and storage (CCS) may play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Noble gases are potential tracers to monitor subsurface CO2 storage sites and verify their containment. Naturally occurring noble gases have been used successfully to refute alleged CO2 leakage in the past. We present results from several sampling campaigns at two Norwegian CO2 capture facilities, the demonstration plant Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) and the natural gas processing plant with CO2 capture and storage on Melkøya. The gas streams in the capture plants were monitored with a combination of on-site mass spectrometry and subsequently analysed discrete samples. This allows us to define the factors controlling noble gas concentrations in captured CO2, to monitor temporal variation of noble gas concentrations and finally evaluate the potential to use noble gases as inherent environmental tracers for labelling CO2 in storage reservoirs. At both sites, CO2 is captured using amine gas treatment. Noble gas concentrations in the gas streams were observed to decrease by several orders of magnitude during the processing. Isotopic ratios are air-like for CO2 captured after natural gas combustion at TCM and natural gas-like for CO2 captured from natural gas processing on Melkøya. Further, we detected a solubility trend caused by the amine solvent at TCM with higher solubility for heavier noble gases. We find that the relative concentrations of noble gases in the captured CO2 are defined by the gas from which the CO2 is captured and the design of the amine gas treatment process. Both factors were observed to cause temporal variation in the captured CO2. Using mixing and noble gas partitioning calculations we show that the significant depletion in noble gas concentrations, together with degassing of noble gas enriched formation water, means that the injected CO2 will inherit the noble gas signature of the storage formation, even following the injection of significant CO2 volumes. Any CO2 leaked from the storage formation is thus likely to have a crustal noble gas signature, characteristic of the storage site, which can be targeted for monitoring. © 2020 The Author(s) International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control, 106 ISSN:1750-5836 ISSN:1878-0148

    Solid oxide cell systems (SOCs) are increasingly being considered for electrical energy storage and as a means to boost the use of renewable energy and improve the grid flexibility by power-to-gas electrochemical conversion. The control of several variables (e.g., local temperature gradients and reactant utilization) is crucial when the stacks are used in dynamic operation with intermittent electrical power sources. In the present work, two 1D models of SOC stacks are established and used to investigate their dynamic behavior and to select and tune a suitable control strategy. Subsequently, safe operating ranges were determined to meet the thermal constraints of the stack by analysing not only the fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolyzer (SOEC) individual modes but also the switching between the two modes when the stack operates reversibly. The dynamic analysis shows that the control loops of our multi-input (reactant molar flow rates), multi-output (reactant utilization and maximum local temperature gradients) control system are strongly decoupled. Therefore, a proportional integral control strategy can be used to prevent dangerous stack operating conditions in dynamic operation. Finally, the controllers were tuned, and their transfer functions were reported. Convective heat transfer via air flow allows controlling the temperature of the solid structure of the cell/stack component, thus avoiding issues related to temperature variation during transient operation. Moreover, the reactant utilization controllers can avoid component fracture or degradation owing to fuel starvation under dynamic operation. The process can be approximated by two first order transfer functions. It can help in the design of more complex control systems in the future if necessary, with embedded process models, such as model predictive control. Results in the simulation environment are preparatory to the programming phase of an actual controller in real-world applications.

    Presents a brief overview of trends and developments of public opinion about nuclear energy since the late 1970's. One possible reason for increased concern is the public's perception of risks. Research has shown a considerable divergence in public and expert assessment of the risks associated with nuclear energy. It is argued that qualitative aspects of these risks play a crucial role in the public's perception of nuclear energy and that reactions such as fear and anxiety are the major determinants of attitudes toward the building of new nuclear power stations in neighborhoods. It is also clear, however, that differences in the perception of these risks do not embrace all the relevant aspects of public acceptance of nuclear energy. Public reaction is also related to more general values and beliefs, and the issue of nuclear energy is firmly embedded in a much wider moral and political domain. A summary of findings in a survey of 300 long-time residents of possible nuclear! power station sites in the UK by the present author (in press) suggests that the major experiences between attitude groups concerned the less-tangible, more long-term nature of potential negative outcomes.

    Abstract Energy storage has the potential to reduce the fuel consumption of ships by loading the engine(s) more efficiently. The exact effect of on-board energy storage depends on the ship functions, the configuration of the on-board power system and the energy management strategy. Previous research in this area consists of detailed modelling, design, and comparisons of specific on-board power systems for explicitly defined operational profiles. The necessary inputs for these studies are rarely known initially however, since the effect of energy storage on the fuel consumption is not necessarily always positive, it is essential to know the limitations of fuel savings obtained by an on-board energy storage early in the design stage. To that effect, the paper proposes a set of algebraic formulas for the equivalent specific fuel consumption of on-board power systems equipped with electrical energy storage, which give a quick estimation of the maximum fuel savings obtainable. Depending on the specific fuel consumption of the prime mover, the loading point of the system and the use scenario of the battery, relative efficiency improvements can vary between −48% and 57%. A set of design guidelines is also proposed based on the obtained results.

    This research was performed to study the anode reaction in a molten carbonate fuel cell. Chronoamperometry experiments and impedance measurements were carried out at gold and nickel flag-type electrodes in a 62 mole percent (m/o) Li{sub 2}CO{sub 3}/38 m/o K{sub 2}CO{sub 3} eutectic carbonate mixture at 923 K as a function of gas composition (H{sub 2}/CO{sub 2}/H{sub 2}O), and as a function of temperature between 823 and 1073 K. The i {minus} {radical}t extrapolation technique, generally applied to evaluate chronoamperometry results, is shown to yield systematic errors for the hydrogen oxidation studies in molten carbonates. A direct fit of the Gerischer-Vielstich relation yields more reliable results for gold. The current responses on Ni cannot be described by the Gerischer-Vielstich relation. The high reaction orders for hydrogen (0.7 to 1.0), medium for carbon dioxide (order 0.5), and the low or even negative reaction order for water (0 to {minus}0.25), indicate the hydrogen oxidation follows a Volmer-Heyrovsky-type mechanism on gold flag electrodes. The reaction rate at a nickel electrodes was found to be too high to be studied accurately using impedance measurements and chronoamperometry on flag electrodes. In spite of the poor accuracy reaction orders indicate that a final chemical reaction ismore » the rate-determining step in the reaction mechanism on nickel. The activation energy for the exchange current density was found to be in the order of 80 kJ/mol with a tendency to be higher for the gases richer in hydrogen. The activation energy for the Warburg coefficient (diffusion) was found to be about {minus}15 kJ/mol.« less

    AbstractThe presence and generation of fines and dust in the bulk of biomass pellets have inflicted several problems in the supply chain during transportation and storage, and the breakage behavior of pellets has been scarcely studied so far. Fines and dust are the consequences of impact and abrasive forces through the whole supply chain; however, the breakage happens at the particle level. Therefore, to study the fines generation, first, the breakage behavior of individual pellets should be understood, and then, the behavior of the bulk materials in operational conditions can be investigated. This paper aims to investigate the breakage behavior of individual pellets under experimental compression tests and to introduce a calibrated numerical model using discrete element method (DEM) in order to pave the way for further studies on pellet breakage. For that purpose, seven different types of biomass pellets were studied experimentally, and then, a calibrated model was introduced via the Timoshenko–Ehrenfest beam theory using DEM. Results show that the model could reasonably predict the breakage behavior of pellets under uniaxial and diametrical compressions. The findings could help to develop a new design of the equipment for transportation and handling of biomass pellets with the aim to reduce the amount of generating fines and dust.

    The electrical ageing of photovoltaic modules during extended damp-heat tests at different stress levels is investigated for three types of crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules with different backsheets, encapsulants and cell types. Deploying different stress levels allows determination of an equivalent stress dose function, which is a first step towards a lifetime prediction of devices. The derived humidity dose is used to characterise the degradation of power as well as that of the solar cell's equivalent circuit parameters calculated from measured current–voltage characteristics. An application of this to the samples demonstrates different modes in the degradation and thus enables better understanding of the module's underlying ageing mechanisms. The analysis of changes in the solar cell equivalent circuit parameters identified the primary contributors to the power degradation and distinguished the potential ageing mechanism for each types of module investigated in this paper. © 2016 The Authors.     Electric water heaters have the ability to store energy in their water buffer without impacting the comfort of the end user. This feature makes them a prime candidate for residential demand response. However, the stochastic and nonlinear dynamics of electric water heaters, makes it challenging to harness their flexibility. Driven by this challenge, this paper formulates the underlying sequential decision-making problem as a Markov decision process and uses techniques from reinforcement learning. Specifically, we apply an auto-encoder network to find a compact feature representation of the sensor measurements, which helps to mitigate the curse of dimensionality. A wellknown batch reinforcement learning technique, fitted Q-iteration, is used to find a control policy, given this feature representation. In a simulation-based experiment using an electric water heater with 50 temperature sensors, the proposed method was able to achieve good policies much faster than when using the full state information. In a lab experiment, we apply fitted Q-iteration to an electric water heater with eight temperature sensors. Further reducing the state vector did not improve the results of fitted Q-iteration. The results of the lab experiment, spanning 40 days, indicate that compared to a thermostat controller, the presented approach was able to reduce the total cost of energy consumption of the electric water heater by 15%.     AbstractMixed‐halide lead perovskites have attracted significant attention in the field of photovoltaics and other optoelectronic applications due to their promising bandgap tunability and device performance. Here, the changes in photoluminescence and photoconductance of solution‐processed triple‐cation mixed‐halide (Cs0.06MA0.15FA0.79)Pb(Br0.4I0.6)3 perovskite films (MA: methylammonium, FA: formamidinium) are studied under solar‐equivalent illumination. It is found that the illumination leads to localized surface sites of iodide‐rich perovskite intermixed with passivating PbI2 material. Time‐ and spectrally resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal that photoexcited charges efficiently transfer to the passivated iodide‐rich perovskite surface layer, leading to high local carrier densities on these sites. The carriers on this surface layer therefore recombine with a high radiative efficiency, with the photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the film under solar excitation densities increasing from 3% to over 45%. At higher excitation densities, nonradiative Auger recombination starts to dominate due to the extremely high concentration of charges on the surface layer. This work reveals new insight into phase segregation of mixed‐halide mixed‐cation perovskites, as well as routes to highly luminescent films by controlling charge density and transfer in novel device structures.

    The ATLAS Inner Detector is a composite tracking system consisting of silicon pixels, silicon strips and straw tubes in a 2 T magnetic field. Its installation was completed in August 2008 and the detector took part in data- taking with single LHC beams and cosmic rays. The initial detector operation, hardware commissioning and in-situ calibrations are described. Tracking performance has been measured with 7.6 million cosmic-ray events, collected using a tracking trigger and reconstructed with modular pattern-recognition and fitting software. The intrinsic hit efficiency and tracking trigger efficiencies are close to 100%. Lorentz angle measurements for both electrons and holes, specific energy-loss calibration and transition radiation turn-on measurements have been performed. Different alignment techniques have been used to reconstruct the detector geometry. After the initial alignment, a transverse impact parameter resolution of 22.1+/-0.9 ��m and a relative momentum resolution ��p/p = (4.83+/-0.16) \times 10-4 GeV-1 \times pT have been measured for high momentum tracks. 34 pages, 25 figures

    Carbon capture and storage (CCS) may play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Noble gases are potential tracers to monitor subsurface CO2 storage sites and verify their containment. Naturally occurring noble gases have been used successfully to refute alleged CO2 leakage in the past. We present results from several sampling campaigns at two Norwegian CO2 capture facilities, the demonstration plant Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) and the natural gas processing plant with CO2 capture and storage on Melkøya. The gas streams in the capture plants were monitored with a combination of on-site mass spectrometry and subsequently analysed discrete samples. This allows us to define the factors controlling noble gas concentrations in captured CO2, to monitor temporal variation of noble gas concentrations and finally evaluate the potential to use noble gases as inherent environmental tracers for labelling CO2 in storage reservoirs. At both sites, CO2 is captured using amine gas treatment. Noble gas concentrations in the gas streams were observed to decrease by several orders of magnitude during the processing. Isotopic ratios are air-like for CO2 captured after natural gas combustion at TCM and natural gas-like for CO2 captured from natural gas processing on Melkøya. Further, we detected a solubility trend caused by the amine solvent at TCM with higher solubility for heavier noble gases. We find that the relative concentrations of noble gases in the captured CO2 are defined by the gas from which the CO2 is captured and the design of the amine gas treatment process. Both factors were observed to cause temporal variation in the captured CO2. Using mixing and noble gas partitioning calculations we show that the significant depletion in noble gas concentrations, together with degassing of noble gas enriched formation water, means that the injected CO2 will inherit the noble gas signature of the storage formation, even following the injection of significant CO2 volumes. Any CO2 leaked from the storage formation is thus likely to have a crustal noble gas signature, characteristic of the storage site, which can be targeted for monitoring. © 2020 The Author(s) International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control, 106 ISSN:1750-5836 ISSN:1878-0148

    Solid oxide cell systems (SOCs) are increasingly being considered for electrical energy storage and as a means to boost the use of renewable energy and improve the grid flexibility by power-to-gas electrochemical conversion. The control of several variables (e.g., local temperature gradients and reactant utilization) is crucial when the stacks are used in dynamic operation with intermittent electrical power sources. In the present work, two 1D models of SOC stacks are established and used to investigate their dynamic behavior and to select and tune a suitable control strategy. Subsequently, safe operating ranges were determined to meet the thermal constraints of the stack by analysing not only the fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolyzer (SOEC) individual modes but also the switching between the two modes when the stack operates reversibly. The dynamic analysis shows that the control loops of our multi-input (reactant molar flow rates), multi-output (reactant utilization and maximum local temperature gradients) control system are strongly decoupled. Therefore, a proportional integral control strategy can be used to prevent dangerous stack operating conditions in dynamic operation. Finally, the controllers were tuned, and their transfer functions were reported. Convective heat transfer via air flow allows controlling the temperature of the solid structure of the cell/stack component, thus avoiding issues related to temperature variation during transient operation. Moreover, the reactant utilization controllers can avoid component fracture or degradation owing to fuel starvation under dynamic operation. The process can be approximated by two first order transfer functions. It can help in the design of more complex control systems in the future if necessary, with embedded process models, such as model predictive control. Results in the simulation environment are preparatory to the programming phase of an actual controller in real-world applications.

    Presents a brief overview of trends and developments of public opinion about nuclear energy since the late 1970's. One possible reason for increased concern is the public's perception of risks. Research has shown a considerable divergence in public and expert assessment of the risks associated with nuclear energy. It is argued that qualitative aspects of these risks play a crucial role in the public's perception of nuclear energy and that reactions such as fear and anxiety are the major determinants of attitudes toward the building of new nuclear power stations in neighborhoods. It is also clear, however, that differences in the perception of these risks do not embrace all the relevant aspects of public acceptance of nuclear energy. Public reaction is also related to more general values and beliefs, and the issue of nuclear energy is firmly embedded in a much wider moral and political domain. A summary of findings in a survey of 300 long-time residents of possible nuclear! power station sites in the UK by the present author (in press) suggests that the major experiences between attitude groups concerned the less-tangible, more long-term nature of potential negative outcomes.

    Abstract Energy storage has the potential to reduce the fuel consumption of ships by loading the engine(s) more efficiently. The exact effect of on-board energy storage depends on the ship functions, the configuration of the on-board power system and the energy management strategy. Previous research in this area consists of detailed modelling, design, and comparisons of specific on-board power systems for explicitly defined operational profiles. The necessary inputs for these studies are rarely known initially however, since the effect of energy storage on the fuel consumption is not necessarily always positive, it is essential to know the limitations of fuel savings obtained by an on-board energy storage early in the design stage. To that effect, the paper proposes a set of algebraic formulas for the equivalent specific fuel consumption of on-board power systems equipped with electrical energy storage, which give a quick estimation of the maximum fuel savings obtainable. Depending on the specific fuel consumption of the prime mover, the loading point of the system and the use scenario of the battery, relative efficiency improvements can vary between −48% and 57%. A set of design guidelines is also proposed based on the obtained results.

    This research was performed to study the anode reaction in a molten carbonate fuel cell. Chronoamperometry experiments and impedance measurements were carried out at gold and nickel flag-type electrodes in a 62 mole percent (m/o) Li{sub 2}CO{sub 3}/38 m/o K{sub 2}CO{sub 3} eutectic carbonate mixture at 923 K as a function of gas composition (H{sub 2}/CO{sub 2}/H{sub 2}O), and as a function of temperature between 823 and 1073 K. The i {minus} {radical}t extrapolation technique, generally applied to evaluate chronoamperometry results, is shown to yield systematic errors for the hydrogen oxidation studies in molten carbonates. A direct fit of the Gerischer-Vielstich relation yields more reliable results for gold. The current responses on Ni cannot be described by the Gerischer-Vielstich relation. The high reaction orders for hydrogen (0.7 to 1.0), medium for carbon dioxide (order 0.5), and the low or even negative reaction order for water (0 to {minus}0.25), indicate the hydrogen oxidation follows a Volmer-Heyrovsky-type mechanism on gold flag electrodes. The reaction rate at a nickel electrodes was found to be too high to be studied accurately using impedance measurements and chronoamperometry on flag electrodes. In spite of the poor accuracy reaction orders indicate that a final chemical reaction ismore » the rate-determining step in the reaction mechanism on nickel. The activation energy for the exchange current density was found to be in the order of 80 kJ/mol with a tendency to be higher for the gases richer in hydrogen. The activation energy for the Warburg coefficient (diffusion) was found to be about {minus}15 kJ/mol.« less

    AbstractThe presence and generation of fines and dust in the bulk of biomass pellets have inflicted several problems in the supply chain during transportation and storage, and the breakage behavior of pellets has been scarcely studied so far. Fines and dust are the consequences of impact and abrasive forces through the whole supply chain; however, the breakage happens at the particle level. Therefore, to study the fines generation, first, the breakage behavior of individual pellets should be understood, and then, the behavior of the bulk materials in operational conditions can be investigated. This paper aims to investigate the breakage behavior of individual pellets under experimental compression tests and to introduce a calibrated numerical model using discrete element method (DEM) in order to pave the way for further studies on pellet breakage. For that purpose, seven different types of biomass pellets were studied experimentally, and then, a calibrated model was introduced via the Timoshenko–Ehrenfest beam theory using DEM. Results show that the model could reasonably predict the breakage behavior of pellets under uniaxial and diametrical compressions. The findings could help to develop a new design of the equipment for transportation and handling of biomass pellets with the aim to reduce the amount of generating fines and dust.
