The dynamic behaviors of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell have been studied both experimentally and numerically. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of cathode inlet humidification on PEM fuel cell load change operations and the fuel cell performance during a simulated start-up process. The PEM fuel cell was found to respond quickly and reproducibly to load changes. It was also found that an increase in the cathode inlet humidification significantly influences the start-up performance of a PEM fuel cell. The cathode inlet relative humidity (RH) under 30% significantly dropped the cell dynamic performance. Extensive numerical simulations, with the transient processes of load jump and gradual changes considered, were performed to characterize dynamic responses of a singe-channel PEM fuel cell under different inlet humidification levels. The results showed that the response time for a fuel cell to reach steady state depends on water accumulation in the membrane, which is consistent with the experimental results. The performance of three voltage control approaches—including power factor control, standardized volt-volt ampere reactive (VAR) curve control, and customized volt-VAR curve control—are investigated and evaluated for three different sizes of charging stations, including a single-port charging station, a midsized three-port charging station, and six-port travel center. The charging stations are placed on multiple locations of four different types of distribution systems to obtain a comprehensive performance analysis of the voltage control approaches under different scenarios. To quantitively compare the performance of the three voltage control approaches, a series of metrics are designed to quantify the performance and contribute to the comprehensive analysis.

In recent years, deregulation in the power generation market worldwide combined with significant variation in fuel prices and a need for flexibility in terms of power augmentation specially during periods of high electricity demand (summer months or noon to 6 PM) has forced electric utilities, cogenerators and independent power producers to explore new power generation enhancement technologies. In the last 5–10 years, inlet fogging approach has shown more promising results to recover lost power output due to increased ambient temperature compared to the other available power enhancement techniques. This paper presents the first systematic study on the effects of both inlet evaporative and overspray fogging on a wide range of combined cycle power plants utilizing gas turbines available from the major gas turbine manufacturers worldwide. A brief discussion on the thermodynamic considerations of inlet and overspray fogging including the effect of droplet dimension is also presented. Based on the analyzed systems, the results show that high pressure inlet fogging influences performance of a combined cycle power plant using an aero-derivative gas turbine differently than with an advanced technology or a traditional gas turbine. Possible reasons for the observed differences are discussed.

This paper proposes a releasable KE-based inertial control scheme for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) WPP that differentiates the contributions of the WTGs depending on their stored KE. The proposed KE-based gain scheme aims to make use of the releasable KE in a WPP to raise the frequency nadir. To achieve this, two additional loops for the inertial control are implemented in each DFIG controller: the rate of change of frequency and droop loops. The proposed scheme adjusts the two loop gains in a DFIG controller depending on its rotor speed so that a DFIG operating at a higher rotor speed releases more KE. The performance of the proposed scheme was investigated under various wind conditions. The results clearly indicate that the proposed scheme successfully improves the frequency nadir more than the conventional same gain scheme by releasing more KE stored in a WPP, and it helps all WTGs to ensure stable operation during inertial control by avoiding the rotor speed reaching the minimum speed limit.

The idea is to increase the house's thermal inertia and to evacuate accumulated heat during the night with a mechanical ventilation system. The VIDW is a cooling wall. Numerous studies on night ventilation have been conducted, but the active ventilation inside the air gap of a double wall with high thermal inertia has not been studied. The first part of this study examines the impact of VIDWs on the thermal comfort in a timber-frame house. The VIDW is modeled in transient mode based on an electrical analogy with the assumption that the exchange coefficients are constant for a given air velocity. In addition, modeling a stationary CFD in forced convection of the VIDW air gap allowed us to study the cooling potential and the benefit of installing obstacles.

Conejo;Given the significant amount of installed generation-capacity based on wind power, and also due to current economic downturn, the subsidies and incentives that have been widely used by wind-power producers to recover their investment costs have decreased and are even expected to disappear in the near future. In these conditions, wind-power producers need to develop offering strategies to make their investments profitable counting solely on the market. This paper proposes a multi-stage risk-constrained stochastic complementarity model to derive the optimal offering strategy of a wind-power producer that participates in both the day-ahead and the balancing markets. Uncertainties concerning wind-power productions, market prices, demands' bids, and rivals' offers are efficiently modeled using a set of scenarios. The conditional-value-at-risk metric is used to model the profit risk associated with the offering decisions. The proposed model is recast as a tractable mixed-integer linear programming program solvable using available branch-and-cut algorithms. Results of a case study are reported and discussed to show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed approach.

Davis Clements;Abstract Synthetic hyperaccumulator biomass (SHB) impregnated with Ni, Zn, Cu, Co or Cr was used to conduct 11 experiments in a lab-scale fluidized bed reactor. Two runs with blank corn stover, with no metal added, were also conducted. The reactor was operated in an entrained mode in a oxygen-free (N2) environment at 873 K and 1 atm . The apparent gas residence time through the lab-scale reactor was 0.6 s at 873 K . The material balance for the lab-scale experiments on N2-free basis varied between 81% and 98%. The presence of a heavy metal in the SHB decreased the char yield and increased the tar yield, compared to the blank. The char and gas yields appeared to depend on the form of the metal salt used to prepare the SHB. However, the metal distribution in the product streams did not seem to be influenced by the chemical form of the metal salt used to prepare the SHB. Greater than 98.5% of the metal in the product stream was concentrated in the char formed by pyrolyzing and gasifying the SHB in the reactor. The metal concentration in the char varied between 0.7 and 15.3% depending on the type of metal in the SHB. However, the metal concentration was increased 4 to 6 times in the char compared to the feed.

In the first stage, the conventional system has been thoroughly analyzed. Mathematical modelling has shown that the condenser is oversized, while the evaporator was undersized. Furthermore, the air-conditioning compressor was also found to be oversized by approximately 12 kW after an evaluation at no-load and full-load conditions. In the second stage, the optimized system with reduced consumption was integrated to a solar PV field. The solar field sizing, and performance optimization of the proposed PV hybrid refrigeration system was accomplished in PV*SOL tool. The simulations demonstrated that with a 170 m2 solar field, an optimized PV hybrid refrigeration system can achieve 58.1% solar fraction at a performance ratio of 59.2%, under given climatic conditions. With net metering, the hybrid system shows a high economic feasibility with the payback period of 5.2 years. The comprehensive methodology and all-inclusive results are valuable to generate explicit recommendations for repowering along with renewable integration of cold storage facilities operating in the region.

By using the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data, this study explores the status quo of ownership and usage of conventional vehicles (CVs) and alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), i.e., Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), in the United States. The young ages of HEVs (6.0 years), PHEVs (3.2 years) and BEVs (3.1 years) demonstrate the significance of the 2017 NHTS data. The results show that after two decades of development, AFVs only occupy about 5% of annual vehicle sales, and their share does not show big increases in recent years. Meanwhile, although HEVs still dominate the AFV market, the share of PHEVs & BEVs has risen to nearly 50% in 2017. In terms of ownership, income still seems to be a major factor influencing AFV adoption, with the median annual household incomes of CVs, HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs being $75,000, $100,000, $150,000 and $200,000, respectively. Besides, AFV households are more likely to live in urban areas, especially large metropolitan areas. Additionally, for AFVs, the proportions of old drivers are much smaller than CVs, indicating this age group might still have concerns regarding adopting AFVs. In terms of travel patterns, the mean and 85th percentile daily trip distances of PHEVs and HEVs are significantly larger than CVs, followed by BEVs. BEVs might still be able to replace CVs for meeting most travel demands after a single charge, considering most observed daily trip distances are fewer than 93.5 km for CVs. However, the observed max daily trip distances of AFVs are still much smaller than CVs, implying increasing the endurance to meet extremely long-distance travel demands is pivotal for encouraging consumers to adopt AFVs instead of CVs in the future.

Large-size woody biomass is a valuable renewable resource to replace fossil fuels in biorefinery processes. The preprocessing of wood chips and briquettes is challenging to manage, especially in an industrial setting, as it generates a significant amount of dust and noise and occasionally causes unexpected accidents. As a result, a substantial amount of resources, energy, labor, and space are needed. The thermochemical conversion behavior of large-size woody biomass was studied to reduce energy consumption for chipping. Large-size wood was 1.5 m in length, 0.1 m in breadth, and stacked 90 cm in height. This strategy has many benefits, including increased effectiveness and reduced CO2 emissions. The target of this paper presents the thermochemical process, and large-size wood was chosen because it provides high-quality product gas while reducing the preprocessing fuel cost. This review examines the benefits of thermochemical conversion technologies for assessing the likelihood of carbon neutrality.

The dynamic behaviors of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell have been studied both experimentally and numerically. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of cathode inlet humidification on PEM fuel cell load change operations and the fuel cell performance during a simulated start-up process. The PEM fuel cell was found to respond quickly and reproducibly to load changes. It was also found that an increase in the cathode inlet humidification significantly influences the start-up performance of a PEM fuel cell. The cathode inlet relative humidity (RH) under 30% significantly dropped the cell dynamic performance. Extensive numerical simulations, with the transient processes of load jump and gradual changes considered, were performed to characterize dynamic responses of a singe-channel PEM fuel cell under different inlet humidification levels. The results showed that the response time for a fuel cell to reach steady state depends on water accumulation in the membrane, which is consistent with the experimental results. The performance of three voltage control approaches—including power factor control, standardized volt-volt ampere reactive (VAR) curve control, and customized volt-VAR curve control—are investigated and evaluated for three different sizes of charging stations, including a single-port charging station, a midsized three-port charging station, and six-port travel center. The charging stations are placed on multiple locations of four different types of distribution systems to obtain a comprehensive performance analysis of the voltage control approaches under different scenarios. To quantitively compare the performance of the three voltage control approaches, a series of metrics are designed to quantify the performance and contribute to the comprehensive analysis.

In recent years, deregulation in the power generation market worldwide combined with significant variation in fuel prices and a need for flexibility in terms of power augmentation specially during periods of high electricity demand (summer months or noon to 6 PM) has forced electric utilities, cogenerators and independent power producers to explore new power generation enhancement technologies. In the last 5–10 years, inlet fogging approach has shown more promising results to recover lost power output due to increased ambient temperature compared to the other available power enhancement techniques. This paper presents the first systematic study on the effects of both inlet evaporative and overspray fogging on a wide range of combined cycle power plants utilizing gas turbines available from the major gas turbine manufacturers worldwide. A brief discussion on the thermodynamic considerations of inlet and overspray fogging including the effect of droplet dimension is also presented. Based on the analyzed systems, the results show that high pressure inlet fogging influences performance of a combined cycle power plant using an aero-derivative gas turbine differently than with an advanced technology or a traditional gas turbine. Possible reasons for the observed differences are discussed.

This paper proposes a releasable KE-based inertial control scheme for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) WPP that differentiates the contributions of the WTGs depending on their stored KE. The proposed KE-based gain scheme aims to make use of the releasable KE in a WPP to raise the frequency nadir. To achieve this, two additional loops for the inertial control are implemented in each DFIG controller: the rate of change of frequency and droop loops. The proposed scheme adjusts the two loop gains in a DFIG controller depending on its rotor speed so that a DFIG operating at a higher rotor speed releases more KE. The performance of the proposed scheme was investigated under various wind conditions. The results clearly indicate that the proposed scheme successfully improves the frequency nadir more than the conventional same gain scheme by releasing more KE stored in a WPP, and it helps all WTGs to ensure stable operation during inertial control by avoiding the rotor speed reaching the minimum speed limit.

The idea is to increase the house's thermal inertia and to evacuate accumulated heat during the night with a mechanical ventilation system. The VIDW is a cooling wall. Numerous studies on night ventilation have been conducted, but the active ventilation inside the air gap of a double wall with high thermal inertia has not been studied. The first part of this study examines the impact of VIDWs on the thermal comfort in a timber-frame house. The VIDW is modeled in transient mode based on an electrical analogy with the assumption that the exchange coefficients are constant for a given air velocity. In addition, modeling a stationary CFD in forced convection of the VIDW air gap allowed us to study the cooling potential and the benefit of installing obstacles.

Conejo;Given the significant amount of installed generation-capacity based on wind power, and also due to current economic downturn, the subsidies and incentives that have been widely used by wind-power producers to recover their investment costs have decreased and are even expected to disappear in the near future. In these conditions, wind-power producers need to develop offering strategies to make their investments profitable counting solely on the market. This paper proposes a multi-stage risk-constrained stochastic complementarity model to derive the optimal offering strategy of a wind-power producer that participates in both the day-ahead and the balancing markets. Uncertainties concerning wind-power productions, market prices, demands' bids, and rivals' offers are efficiently modeled using a set of scenarios. The conditional-value-at-risk metric is used to model the profit risk associated with the offering decisions. The proposed model is recast as a tractable mixed-integer linear programming program solvable using available branch-and-cut algorithms. Results of a case study are reported and discussed to show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed approach.

Davis Clements;Abstract Synthetic hyperaccumulator biomass (SHB) impregnated with Ni, Zn, Cu, Co or Cr was used to conduct 11 experiments in a lab-scale fluidized bed reactor. Two runs with blank corn stover, with no metal added, were also conducted. The reactor was operated in an entrained mode in a oxygen-free (N2) environment at 873 K and 1 atm . The apparent gas residence time through the lab-scale reactor was 0.6 s at 873 K . The material balance for the lab-scale experiments on N2-free basis varied between 81% and 98%. The presence of a heavy metal in the SHB decreased the char yield and increased the tar yield, compared to the blank. The char and gas yields appeared to depend on the form of the metal salt used to prepare the SHB. However, the metal distribution in the product streams did not seem to be influenced by the chemical form of the metal salt used to prepare the SHB. Greater than 98.5% of the metal in the product stream was concentrated in the char formed by pyrolyzing and gasifying the SHB in the reactor. The metal concentration in the char varied between 0.7 and 15.3% depending on the type of metal in the SHB. However, the metal concentration was increased 4 to 6 times in the char compared to the feed.

In the first stage, the conventional system has been thoroughly analyzed. Mathematical modelling has shown that the condenser is oversized, while the evaporator was undersized. Furthermore, the air-conditioning compressor was also found to be oversized by approximately 12 kW after an evaluation at no-load and full-load conditions. In the second stage, the optimized system with reduced consumption was integrated to a solar PV field. The solar field sizing, and performance optimization of the proposed PV hybrid refrigeration system was accomplished in PV*SOL tool. The simulations demonstrated that with a 170 m2 solar field, an optimized PV hybrid refrigeration system can achieve 58.1% solar fraction at a performance ratio of 59.2%, under given climatic conditions. With net metering, the hybrid system shows a high economic feasibility with the payback period of 5.2 years. The comprehensive methodology and all-inclusive results are valuable to generate explicit recommendations for repowering along with renewable integration of cold storage facilities operating in the region.

By using the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data, this study explores the status quo of ownership and usage of conventional vehicles (CVs) and alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), i.e., Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), in the United States. The young ages of HEVs (6.0 years), PHEVs (3.2 years) and BEVs (3.1 years) demonstrate the significance of the 2017 NHTS data. The results show that after two decades of development, AFVs only occupy about 5% of annual vehicle sales, and their share does not show big increases in recent years. Meanwhile, although HEVs still dominate the AFV market, the share of PHEVs & BEVs has risen to nearly 50% in 2017. In terms of ownership, income still seems to be a major factor influencing AFV adoption, with the median annual household incomes of CVs, HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs being $75,000, $100,000, $150,000 and $200,000, respectively. Besides, AFV households are more likely to live in urban areas, especially large metropolitan areas. Additionally, for AFVs, the proportions of old drivers are much smaller than CVs, indicating this age group might still have concerns regarding adopting AFVs. In terms of travel patterns, the mean and 85th percentile daily trip distances of PHEVs and HEVs are significantly larger than CVs, followed by BEVs. BEVs might still be able to replace CVs for meeting most travel demands after a single charge, considering most observed daily trip distances are fewer than 93.5 km for CVs. However, the observed max daily trip distances of AFVs are still much smaller than CVs, implying increasing the endurance to meet extremely long-distance travel demands is pivotal for encouraging consumers to adopt AFVs instead of CVs in the future.

Large-size woody biomass is a valuable renewable resource to replace fossil fuels in biorefinery processes. The preprocessing of wood chips and briquettes is challenging to manage, especially in an industrial setting, as it generates a significant amount of dust and noise and occasionally causes unexpected accidents. As a result, a substantial amount of resources, energy, labor, and space are needed. The thermochemical conversion behavior of large-size woody biomass was studied to reduce energy consumption for chipping. Large-size wood was 1.5 m in length, 0.1 m in breadth, and stacked 90 cm in height. This strategy has many benefits, including increased effectiveness and reduced CO2 emissions. The target of this paper presents the thermochemical process, and large-size wood was chosen because it provides high-quality product gas while reducing the preprocessing fuel cost. This review examines the benefits of thermochemical conversion technologies for assessing the likelihood of carbon neutrality.
