    Concurrent use of cocaine and alcohol results in formation of a cocaine homolog and metabolite-cocaethylene.To characterize cocaethylene pharmacology, ten paid volunteer subjects were given deuterium-labeled (d(5)) cocaine (0.3, 0.6, and 1.2 mg/kg and cocaine placebo) by a 15-min constant rate intravenous injection 1 h after a single oral dose of ethanol (1 g/kg) or ethanol and cocaine placebo using a double-blind, crossover design. Six of the same volunteers subsequently received a 1.2 mg/kg dose of cocaine alone. A small (7.5 mg) nonpharmacologically active dose of deuterium-labeled cocaethylene-d(3) was concurrently administered with the cocaine to enable calculation of absolute cocaethylene formation and clearance. Plasma and urine cocaine, cocaethylene, and benzoylecgonine concentrations, physiologic and subjective effects were measured.When co-administered with ethanol, 17+/-6% (mean+/-S.D.) of the cocaine was converted to cocaethylene. Cocaethylene peak plasma concentrations and AUC increased proportionally to the cocaine dose. Ethanol ingestion prior to cocaine administration decreased urine benzoylecgonine levels by 48% and increased urinary cocaethylene and ecgonine ethyl ester levels. Subjects liked and experienced more total intoxication after the combination of cocaine and ethanol than after either drug alone.In the presence of ethanol, the altered biotransformation of cocaine resulted in 17% of an intravenous cocaine dose being converted to cocaethylene and relatively lower urinary concentrations of benzoylecgonine.

    Heteromultimetallic hydride clusters containing both rare-earth and d-transition metals are of interest in terms of both their structure and reactivity. However, such heterometallic complexes have not yet been investigated to a great extent because of difficulties in their synthesis and structural characterization. Here, we report the synthesis, X-ray and neutron diffraction studies, and hydrogen addition and release properties of a family of rare-earth/d-transition-metal heteromultimetallic polyhydride complexes of the core structure type 'Ln(4)MH(n)' (Ln = Y, Dy, Ho; M = Mo, W; n = 9, 11, 13). Monitoring of hydrogen addition to a hydride cluster such as [{(C(5)Me(4)SiMe(3))Y}(4)(μ-H)(9)Mo(C(5)Me(5))] in a single-crystal to single-crystal process by X-ray diffraction has been achieved for the first time. Density functional theory studies reveal that the hydrogen addition process is cooperatively assisted by the Y/Mo heteromultimetallic sites, thus offering unprecedented insight into the hydrogen addition and release process of a metal hydride cluster.

    This paper provides a meta-analysis of a broad set of recent studies of the economic impacts of climate change mitigation policies. It evaluates the influences of the impacts of causal factors, key economic assumptions and macroeconomic linkages on the outcome of these studies. A quantile regression analysis is also performed on the meta sample, to evaluate the robustness of those key factors throughout the full range of macro findings. Results of these analyses suggest that study results are strongly driven by data inputs, economic assumptions and modeling approaches. However, they are sometimes affected in counterintuitive ways.

    Summary:We reviewed the case records of 249 adult patients with generalized convulsive status epilepticus (SE) examined at San Francisco General Hospital between 1977 and 1989 and identified 27 patients (10.8%) in whom alcohol abuse was the only identifiable precipitating cause of SE. In 12 patients (44% of the study group), SE was the first presentation of alcohol‐related seizures. Seizures with focal features were observed in 11 patients (40.1%), but there was little correlation with localized computed tomography (CT) or EEG abnormalities. SE was controlled with phenytoin (PHT), with or without a benzodiazepine (BZD), in 18 patients (66.7%). Twentytwo patients (81.5%) were discharged with no new neurologic deficits, but time to recovery of baseline mental status was prolonged (>12 h) in 24 patients. With regard to alcohol abuse history, study patients did not differ from a comparison group with isolated alcohol withdrawal seizures. The results indicate that alcohol abuse is a common cause of SE and that SE may be the first presentation of alcohol‐related seizures. Furthermore, the outcome of patients with alcohol‐related SE compares favorably with that of patients with SE due to other causes, but recovery of these patients may be complicated by a prolonged postictal state.

    Tooth storage conditions in studies of dentine have not been standardized. The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of storage solution and time on dentine, using spectroscopic methods.Twenty-seven dentine disks (0.75 mm thick) were prepared from freshly extracted third molars with documented histories. The teeth were sectioned parallel to the occlusal plane using a diamond saw. Specimens were analysed non-destructively for surface chemical changes using specular reflectance infra-red Fourier transform spectroscopy (SRIFTS), and changes in optical properties were measured in the ultraviolet, visible and near-infra-red spectral ranges with an integrating sphere spectrophotometer (UV/VIS/NIR) before and after storage. A minimum of five specimens were stored in distilled water with 0.02% thymol, purified and filtered water, phosphate buffered saline with 0.02% thymol, 70% ethanol or 10% buffered formalin and evaluated at 0, 1, 2, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. After each measurement, specimens were stored in fresh solutions. IR spectra were obtained from 4400 to 400 wave-numbers (cm-1). Optical properties of reflectance and transmittance were determined from 200 to 2500 nm, and absorbance was calculated.Analysis of the IR spectra indicated no significant differences in collagen or mineral peak positions for any solution at any time period. There were significant differences in peak intensities of dentine stored in distilled water, purified and filtered water and phosphate-buffered saline over time in the IR spectra. Furthermore, differences in optical properties of dentine disks were detected by UV/VIS/NIR.It was concluded that changes in surface chemistry and optical properties of dentine occur as a function of storage solution and time, which must be considered when studying dentine.

    The purpose of the present study was to determine the acute effects of the anticraving compound acamprosate (calcium acetylhomotaurinate) and the closely related compound homotaurine on ethanol intake and ethanol-stimulated dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens. Male rats were treated with acamprosate (200 or 400 mg/kg intraperitoneally, i.p.) or homotaurine (10, 50, or 100 mg/kg i.p.) 15 min prior to access to 10% ethanol and water for 1 h in a two-bottle choice restricted access paradigm. A separate group of rats was implanted with microdialysis probes in the nucleus accumbens and given an acute injection of ethanol (1.5 g/kg i.p.) that was preceded by saline, acamprosate, or homotaurine. Acamprosate and homotaurine dose-dependently reduced ethanol intake and preference. These compounds also delayed or suppressed ethanol-stimulated increases in nucleus accumbens dopamine release, suggesting that acamprosate and homotaurine may reduce ethanol intake by interfering with the ability of ethanol to activate the mesolimbic dopamine reward system.

    A per capita model for the growth, development and reproduction of the coccinellid predatorRhizobius lophanthae (Blaisd) feeding on the oleander scale(Aspidiotus nerii Bouche (Homoptera: Diaspididae)) was developed. A thermal threshold for development of 9.4°C was found. Under conditions of unlimited food, the relationship of mass at time t + 1 to that at t (in days at 25°C) suggests an 8.7 percent growth rate per mg larvae per day at 25°C. An adult female beetle produces approximately 20 eggs per day while consuming an average of 8.5 scales/day. This is approximately 2.16 eggs per scale consumed above the maintenance level of 1.88 scales per day. More precisely, this compensation point is 0.12 mg of prey/mg of predator/day at 25°C and the egestion rate is 1 - β = 0.63

    Background: Previous studies have demonstrated relations between behavioral undercontrol (e.g., sensation seeking) and higher levels of alcohol use. The mechanism underlying this relation is not yet understood. In this article, we investigate the role of subjective stimulant and sedative effects of intoxication on drinking habits, and we test the possibility that these effects mediate or moderate relations between behavioral undercontrol and drinking habits.Methods: College drinkers (n= 91) consumed 0.85 ml/kg of alcohol (approximately four drinks) and completed self‐report measures of stimulation and sedation at three time points: (1) before drinking; (2) 15 min after consumption, on the ascending limb of the blood alcohol curve; and (3) 45 min after consumption, on the descending limb of the curve. In addition, participants completed the MacAndrew Alcoholism and Sensation Seeking Scales, indices of behavioral undercontrol, and a self‐report questionnaire of drinking habits (quantity, frequency, and maximum).Results: As expected, undercontrol was strongly related to drinking habits (p < 0.0005). Undercontrol was also significantly related to ascending limb stimulation (p < 0.005), which, in turn, was related to drinking habits (p < 0.005). Finally, stimulation was found to moderate the relations between undercontrol and drinking habits such that relations were stronger at higher levels of stimulation.Conclusions: These findings may help to better understand the variability in drinking behavior, and this may be critical in eventually developing and appropriately targeting prevention efforts.

    Abstract Local governments are agile policy makers expected to make significant contributions to climate change mitigation through local legislation. One mitigation mechanism available to local governments is to make it easier for households to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels that generate emission-free electricity. Streamlining PV permitting policies is currently being promoted in states such as California as a way to boost rates of residential solar installation. Fixed effects modelling is used to examine whether streamlining permitting for PV increased rates of PV installations in California prior to 2013. To fill a gap in longitudinal data on implementation dates of local policies to support PV, a combination of surveys, partial databases, and publicly available city-level information is utilized to build a complete picture of changes in relevant policies from 2005 to 2013. Modelling results are unable to reject the null hypothesis that the implementation of streamlined permitting has no effect on residential PV installation rates. This highlights the limitations of what can be assessed given the current sparsity of data on city-level policy changes even employing significant original data collection and compilation.

    The insulin signaling pathway regulates multiple physiological processes, including energy metabolism, organismal growth, aging and reproduction. Here we show that genetic manipulations in Drosophila melanogaster that impair the function of insulin-producing cells or of the insulin-receptor signaling pathway in the nervous system lead to increased sensitivity to the intoxicating effects of ethanol. These findings suggest a previously unknown role for this highly conserved pathway in regulating the behavioral responses to an addictive drug.
