    From the 19th century, in Western Europe, urban sanitation was meant to create sewers as well as bury small rivers. With the impulse of environmental laws, engineering schemes that once aimed at shaping vegetation around the city is now trying to reintroduce it in the most natural way possible. In that context, river restoration appears to be a strategic tool for the development of cities. It is also about linking districts to each other with plant pathways, creating public spaces, all while dealing with the issue of heat islands. River restoration designates the re-establishment of a river's natural functions, which used to be highly anthropized. After a rhetorical review, the paper deals with the firsts results of Lyon’s river restoration research program. This research program is enacted by the Greater Lyon, the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) and an engineering agency Artelia. The paper especially treats the subject of Rize’s restoration. A former river which was entirely buried in the 19th century. This study contributes to the research on the “shallow” concept of a sustainable city through the consideration of the benefits and shortcomings of recreating a river in a dense urban area.     A measurement of the production of three isolated photons in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV is reported. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb$^{−1}$ collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The differential cross sections are measured as functions of the transverse energy of each photon, the difference in azimuthal angle and in pseudorapidity between pairs of photons, the invariant mass of pairs of photons, and the invariant mass of the triphoton system. A measurement of the inclusive fiducial cross section is also reported. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions are compared to the cross-section measurements. The predictions underestimate the measurement of the inclusive fiducial cross section and the differential measurements at low photon transverse energies and invariant masses. They provide adequate descriptions of the measurements at high values of the photon transverse energies, invariant mass of pairs of photons, and invariant mass of the triphoton system.     In order to investigate the effect of potassium addition on the composition of torrefaction condensates, two demineralized wood species were impregnated with different concentrations of K2CO3 and then torrefied at 275°C up to an anhydrous weight loss (AWL) of 25%. Torrefaction was carried out in both a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) instrument and a laboratory fixed-bed reactor. Condensates from the fixed bed reactor were collected and analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). TGA showed that when potassium content increased in the biomass, shorter torrefaction times were sufficient to obtain the targeted AWL. GC-MS analysis showed, for both wood species, that potassium promotes the formation of acetol and slightly enhances acetic acid yield. The amount of some lignin derivatives (guaiacol, syringol, 4-vinylguaiacol) also rose with potassium addition. Yields of levoglucosan, LAC (1-hydroxy-(1R)-3,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-2-one) and DGP (1,4:3,6-dianhydro-a-d-glucopyranose), as well as furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, decreased drastically in the presence of potassium.     Multi-particle cumulants and corresponding Fourier harmonics are measured for azimuthal angle distributions of charged particles in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV and in $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, and compared to the results obtained for low-multiplicity Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. These measurements aim to assess the collective nature of particle production. The measurements of multi-particle cumulants confirm the evidence for collective phenomena in $p$+Pb and low-multiplicity Pb+Pb collisions. On the other hand, the $pp$ results for four-particle cumulants do not demonstrate collective behaviour, indicating that they may be biased by contributions from non-flow correlations. A comparison of multi-particle cumulants and derived Fourier harmonics across different collision systems is presented as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity. For a given multiplicity, the measured Fourier harmonics are largest in Pb+Pb, smaller in $p$+Pb and smallest in $pp$ collisions.     The chronology of the late-Holocene coastal storms was reconstructed from vibracore samplings, radiocarbon dating and sedimentary analysis from Yeu island (French Atlantic coast). The methodology used is based on the identification of disturbing sedimentary events recognized within three Holocene sedimentary transgressive sequences selected along the northern coast of the island. These sequences correspond to the present-day coastal salt-marshes and swamps. The sediment cores were centimeter-sampled and studied from several sedimentological proxies (Loss of Ignition, sand fraction, mean grain size) with a high temporal resolution. Chronology was built by age-depth model based on eleven 14C measures of organic sediments and shell samples. Nine paleo-storm events were recorded: a 2100-1950 calBP interval as a deeply stormy-disturbed period; five others major impacted times: 600-500 calBP, 2850-2350 calBP, 3500-3270 calBP, 5400-5370 calBP and 6650-6510 calBP; and three final less meaningful storminess hypothesis near 1590 calBP, 7000 calBP, and between 7670 and 7470 calBP. This chronology was compared with enhanced storminess periods recognized along the European Atlantic coast. Six stormy periods stand out from the last 8000 years: 600-300 BP, 1700-1100 BP, 2900-2500 BP, 3500-3300 BP, 5500-5100 BP and 7700-7100 BP, corresponding to late Holocene global cold events. These results suggests that these changes in coastal hydrodynamics were in phase with those identified over the North-eastern Atlantic and seem to correspond to Holocene cooling first shown in the North Atlantic and associated with decreases in sea surface temperature.

    The production of a prompt photon in association with a $Z$ boson is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The analysis uses a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018. The production cross-section for the process $pp \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-\gamma+X$ ($\ell = e, \mu$) is measured within a fiducial phase-space region defined by kinematic requirements on the photon and the leptons, and by isolation requirements on the photon. An experimental precision of 2.9% is achieved for the fiducial cross-section. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of each of six kinematic variables characterising the $\ell^+\ell^-\gamma$ system. The data are compared with theoretical predictions based on next-to-leading-order and next-to-next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.     Our study concerns the electricity supply of a meteorological weather pylon with help of a PV/H2 hybrid system in Cadarache (Aix in Provence, France). The objective was to determine the optimal sizing of the whole system by observing his capacity to answer to the specifications and taking into account the appropriate constraints for the site. This approach has been made via a new numerical sizing code (Matlab language), based on a sequential running time. For the simulation, a good precision of the balance between production and consumption is obtained with a time-step of one hour. This time scale allows neglecting the response time of the various sub-systems. This approximation is realistic because we do not want to get an accurate electrical comportment of the system in real time, but we search to obtain a global evaluation of the energetic balance during the time of each simulation. The system consists of renewable sources of production energy (PV array), energy storage system (H2 chain) and converters which are associated with them.     The production of above-ground biomass (leaves aside) was studied for six very-short rotation coppice stands (VSRC) of 1 or 2 year-old poplars planted on various sites. The number of stumps by hectare ranged from 5600 to 13330, the number of stems by stump from 1 (first rotation) to 16 (depending on rotations) and the -1 -1 production of biomass from 0,9 to 10 dt.ha.y . Wood chips coming from the harvested biomass were analysed to estimate the nutrient content of the major elements N, P, K, Ca and Mg. Data on amount of nutrient stocked by the biomass were compared to data from the literature obtained with short-rotation coppices with lower stand densities (2000 to 3000 stems ha-1) and higher rotation length (7 to 10 years old). The relationship between annual biomass -1 -1 production (dt.ha.y ) and annual nutrient uptake (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) stocked in the harvested biomass shows clearly that for an equivalent production, the age of the trees has a strong influence on the nutrients use efficiency. These results can be used to estimate the amount of fertilization required after each harvest according to the biomass production of the stand and the age of the stems.     This study aims to assess the potentiality of biomass production and availability for energy systems based on woody biomass, with the use of a geoprospective approach. The methodology takes into account the impact of the global warming on the Net Primary Productivity and the vegetation structure towards 2050, and the assessment of urban dynamic in order to identify the future areas of energy demand. Our results show that Mediterranean forest may be more vulnerable due to the increase of temperatures that may affect the mortality of the trees and shrubs, and the structure of the ecosystems due to the colonization of more xerophilous species in the inner valleys and hills. In some parts of the Alpes-Maritimes (French Riviera), these changes may affect the biomass production and, in consequence, the availability of the resource for the supply chain. The current development of the urbanization in the valleys and in the central part of the territory, which will be emphasized in the future, raises the question of the sustainability of energy systems based on woody biomass in such areas due to the potential risk of the increase of trees mortality, changes in vegetation structure with less trees and NPP decrease. At the opposite, in the mountain areas, the NPP will increase and the dynamic of trees would be suitable to the development of forests. But these areas are mainly located in protected areas where few activities are tolerated. These results underline the difficulty and complexity of a sustainable development of wood energy supply chain in Mediterranean territories, and the need of a strategy to face these potential problems.     From the 19th century, in Western Europe, urban sanitation was meant to create sewers as well as bury small rivers. With the impulse of environmental laws, engineering schemes that once aimed at shaping vegetation around the city is now trying to reintroduce it in the most natural way possible. In that context, river restoration appears to be a strategic tool for the development of cities. It is also about linking districts to each other with plant pathways, creating public spaces, all while dealing with the issue of heat islands. River restoration designates the re-establishment of a river's natural functions, which used to be highly anthropized. After a rhetorical review, the paper deals with the firsts results of Lyon’s river restoration research program. This research program is enacted by the Greater Lyon, the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) and an engineering agency Artelia. The paper especially treats the subject of Rize’s restoration. A former river which was entirely buried in the 19th century. This study contributes to the research on the “shallow” concept of a sustainable city through the consideration of the benefits and shortcomings of recreating a river in a dense urban area.     A measurement of the production of three isolated photons in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV is reported. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb$^{−1}$ collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The differential cross sections are measured as functions of the transverse energy of each photon, the difference in azimuthal angle and in pseudorapidity between pairs of photons, the invariant mass of pairs of photons, and the invariant mass of the triphoton system. A measurement of the inclusive fiducial cross section is also reported. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions are compared to the cross-section measurements. The predictions underestimate the measurement of the inclusive fiducial cross section and the differential measurements at low photon transverse energies and invariant masses. They provide adequate descriptions of the measurements at high values of the photon transverse energies, invariant mass of pairs of photons, and invariant mass of the triphoton system.     In order to investigate the effect of potassium addition on the composition of torrefaction condensates, two demineralized wood species were impregnated with different concentrations of K2CO3 and then torrefied at 275°C up to an anhydrous weight loss (AWL) of 25%. Torrefaction was carried out in both a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) instrument and a laboratory fixed-bed reactor. Condensates from the fixed bed reactor were collected and analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). TGA showed that when potassium content increased in the biomass, shorter torrefaction times were sufficient to obtain the targeted AWL. GC-MS analysis showed, for both wood species, that potassium promotes the formation of acetol and slightly enhances acetic acid yield. The amount of some lignin derivatives (guaiacol, syringol, 4-vinylguaiacol) also rose with potassium addition. Yields of levoglucosan, LAC (1-hydroxy-(1R)-3,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-2-one) and DGP (1,4:3,6-dianhydro-a-d-glucopyranose), as well as furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, decreased drastically in the presence of potassium.     Multi-particle cumulants and corresponding Fourier harmonics are measured for azimuthal angle distributions of charged particles in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV and in $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, and compared to the results obtained for low-multiplicity Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. These measurements aim to assess the collective nature of particle production. The measurements of multi-particle cumulants confirm the evidence for collective phenomena in $p$+Pb and low-multiplicity Pb+Pb collisions. On the other hand, the $pp$ results for four-particle cumulants do not demonstrate collective behaviour, indicating that they may be biased by contributions from non-flow correlations. A comparison of multi-particle cumulants and derived Fourier harmonics across different collision systems is presented as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity. For a given multiplicity, the measured Fourier harmonics are largest in Pb+Pb, smaller in $p$+Pb and smallest in $pp$ collisions.     The chronology of the late-Holocene coastal storms was reconstructed from vibracore samplings, radiocarbon dating and sedimentary analysis from Yeu island (French Atlantic coast). The methodology used is based on the identification of disturbing sedimentary events recognized within three Holocene sedimentary transgressive sequences selected along the northern coast of the island. These sequences correspond to the present-day coastal salt-marshes and swamps. The sediment cores were centimeter-sampled and studied from several sedimentological proxies (Loss of Ignition, sand fraction, mean grain size) with a high temporal resolution. Chronology was built by age-depth model based on eleven 14C measures of organic sediments and shell samples. Nine paleo-storm events were recorded: a 2100-1950 calBP interval as a deeply stormy-disturbed period; five others major impacted times: 600-500 calBP, 2850-2350 calBP, 3500-3270 calBP, 5400-5370 calBP and 6650-6510 calBP; and three final less meaningful storminess hypothesis near 1590 calBP, 7000 calBP, and between 7670 and 7470 calBP. This chronology was compared with enhanced storminess periods recognized along the European Atlantic coast. Six stormy periods stand out from the last 8000 years: 600-300 BP, 1700-1100 BP, 2900-2500 BP, 3500-3300 BP, 5500-5100 BP and 7700-7100 BP, corresponding to late Holocene global cold events. These results suggests that these changes in coastal hydrodynamics were in phase with those identified over the North-eastern Atlantic and seem to correspond to Holocene cooling first shown in the North Atlantic and associated with decreases in sea surface temperature.

    The production of a prompt photon in association with a $Z$ boson is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The analysis uses a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018. The production cross-section for the process $pp \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-\gamma+X$ ($\ell = e, \mu$) is measured within a fiducial phase-space region defined by kinematic requirements on the photon and the leptons, and by isolation requirements on the photon. An experimental precision of 2.9% is achieved for the fiducial cross-section. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of each of six kinematic variables characterising the $\ell^+\ell^-\gamma$ system. The data are compared with theoretical predictions based on next-to-leading-order and next-to-next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.     Our study concerns the electricity supply of a meteorological weather pylon with help of a PV/H2 hybrid system in Cadarache (Aix in Provence, France). The objective was to determine the optimal sizing of the whole system by observing his capacity to answer to the specifications and taking into account the appropriate constraints for the site. This approach has been made via a new numerical sizing code (Matlab language), based on a sequential running time. For the simulation, a good precision of the balance between production and consumption is obtained with a time-step of one hour. This time scale allows neglecting the response time of the various sub-systems. This approximation is realistic because we do not want to get an accurate electrical comportment of the system in real time, but we search to obtain a global evaluation of the energetic balance during the time of each simulation. The system consists of renewable sources of production energy (PV array), energy storage system (H2 chain) and converters which are associated with them.     The production of above-ground biomass (leaves aside) was studied for six very-short rotation coppice stands (VSRC) of 1 or 2 year-old poplars planted on various sites. The number of stumps by hectare ranged from 5600 to 13330, the number of stems by stump from 1 (first rotation) to 16 (depending on rotations) and the -1 -1 production of biomass from 0,9 to 10 dt.ha.y . Wood chips coming from the harvested biomass were analysed to estimate the nutrient content of the major elements N, P, K, Ca and Mg. Data on amount of nutrient stocked by the biomass were compared to data from the literature obtained with short-rotation coppices with lower stand densities (2000 to 3000 stems ha-1) and higher rotation length (7 to 10 years old). The relationship between annual biomass -1 -1 production (dt.ha.y ) and annual nutrient uptake (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) stocked in the harvested biomass shows clearly that for an equivalent production, the age of the trees has a strong influence on the nutrients use efficiency. These results can be used to estimate the amount of fertilization required after each harvest according to the biomass production of the stand and the age of the stems.     This study aims to assess the potentiality of biomass production and availability for energy systems based on woody biomass, with the use of a geoprospective approach. The methodology takes into account the impact of the global warming on the Net Primary Productivity and the vegetation structure towards 2050, and the assessment of urban dynamic in order to identify the future areas of energy demand. Our results show that Mediterranean forest may be more vulnerable due to the increase of temperatures that may affect the mortality of the trees and shrubs, and the structure of the ecosystems due to the colonization of more xerophilous species in the inner valleys and hills. In some parts of the Alpes-Maritimes (French Riviera), these changes may affect the biomass production and, in consequence, the availability of the resource for the supply chain. The current development of the urbanization in the valleys and in the central part of the territory, which will be emphasized in the future, raises the question of the sustainability of energy systems based on woody biomass in such areas due to the potential risk of the increase of trees mortality, changes in vegetation structure with less trees and NPP decrease. At the opposite, in the mountain areas, the NPP will increase and the dynamic of trees would be suitable to the development of forests. But these areas are mainly located in protected areas where few activities are tolerated. These results underline the difficulty and complexity of a sustainable development of wood energy supply chain in Mediterranean territories, and the need of a strategy to face these potential problems.
