description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2021Embargo end date: 08 Jul 2022 FrancePublisher:Elsevier BV Patrick Rousset; Mark Daniel G. de Luna; Arjay A. Arpia; Arjay A. Arpia; Wei Hsin Chen; Wei Hsin Chen; Wei Hsin Chen; Su Shiung Lam; Su Shiung Lam;Abstract With drastic fossil fuel depletion and environmental deterioration concerns, a move towards a more sustainable bioenergy-based economy is essential. Lately, the application of microwave (MW) irradiation for waste processing has been attracting interest globally. MW-assisted heating possesses several advantages such as the provision of high microwave energy into dielectric materials with deeper penetration for internal heat generation, showing beneficial features in improving the heating rate and reducing the reaction time. Consequently, the most recent literature regarding the applications of MW-assisted heating for biomass pretreatment as well as biofuel and bioenergy production was reviewed and consolidated in this study. An impressive increase in the product yield and improvement of the product properties are reported, with the use of MW-assisted heating in several conversion routes to produce biofuels. Despite being a promising technology for biofuel production, some major fundamental data of MW-assisted heating have not been comprehensively identified. Therefore, the feasibility of this technology for large-scale implementation is still subpar. Understanding the interaction between the feedstock and the microwave electromagnetic field, and the optimization of several operational and mechanical parameters are the two main keystones that would propel the industrialization of MW heating in the near future. This provides key insights leading to increased feasibility and more advanced application of MW heating.

However, more recent attention to cautious usage of energy resources is changing this vision and calls for solutions accounting for appropriate multi-requirements combinations when developing a critical infrastructure. In such a context, analysis supports able to assist the designer in envisioning a satisfactory trade-off among the multi-requirements for the system at hand are highly helpful. In this paper, the focus is on the railway sector and the contribution is a stochastic model-based analysis framework to quantitatively assess trade-offs between dependability indicators and electrical energy consumption incurred by the rail switch heating system.Moving from a preliminary study that concentrated on energy consumption only, the analysis framework has been extended to become a solid support to devise appropriate tuning of the heating policy that guarantees satisfactory trade-offs between dependability and energy consumption. An evaluation campaign in a variety of climate scenarios demonstrates the feasibility and utility of the developed framework.

Such attacks may affect large portions of the power system, make repair difficult and cause huge societal impact, so pressure to ensure cyber-security of control and communication systems is now strong worldwide. Several cyber-security frameworks were developed, but it is rather difficult to anticipate adoption costs and benefits, and this hampers their generalised adoption. T his paper focuses on the outcome of two case studies (concerning the Italian power generation and the Polish transmission systems. The socio-economic impact of failures and the costs of standard adoption are estimated on an objective basis. It is up to public authorities to decide whether to require the adoption of security standards to operators in the electric system. The nature of public good of security underlines the necessity of public support for this operation, but we discuss the extent and the management of this support.

In particular, the performance of 45 buildings in this region were measured and quantified in terms of life cycle based carbon footprint, life cycle costs, heat loss rate, number of guests, energy consumption, and area. Buildings were classified into three types: traditional, semi-modern and modern. The statistical analysis included testing for significant differences between such categories by means of ANOVA, and determination of the correlation between the same parameters. Results show a significant difference between the buildings’ total carbon footprint and operation stage carbon footprint while, there is no significant difference between the buildings’ life cycle costs. Traditional buildings have on average the largest carbon footprint and life-cycle cost over the typical building lifespan of 50 years of building lifespan. The ANOVA tests highlight how heat loss rate, size of the building and number of tourists in the hotels are significantly different across the building types. A strong positive correlation is observed between environmental impact, economic impact and energy consumption for the household activities, and a negative correlation with the number of guests and building size. By considering several buildings, this study allows to draw new and more general conclusions about effective sustainability strategies in the whole hotel sector in the Himalayan region. In particular, it shows that reducing impacts in the operation stage should be highly prioritized, focusing on reducing energy consumption and heat loss and shifting to the use of renewable energy sources.

To do so, physical, chemical, and mechanical energy must be considered. This study aimed to analyze the yields and properties of charcoal produced at different pyrolysis temperatures. Eucalyptus saligna wood was pyrolyzed in a reactor with final temperatures of 450, 550, 650, 750, 850 and 950 °C. The yields of charcoal, pyroligneous liquid and non-condensable gases were determined. Mass loss was determined for each temperature. Charcoal analysis included the determination of the apparent density, proximate analysis, heating value, mechanical strength, X-ray images for the internal visualization of its structure and hygroscopicity test. Relevant charcoal properties for the steel industry and barbecue, such as density, mechanical strength, heating value and hygroscopicity, show variable trends from pyrolysis at 650 °C. The results show that pyrolysis temperature had a great impact on the properties of charcoal. The apparent density of charcoal rose from 500 °C and had no relation to the breaking strength. When the pyrolysis temperature was raised, an increase in both apparent and true densities, internal fissures and cracks and fixed carbon content of charcoal was observed.

Morren; J.G. Slootweg;Electrical energy production from renewable energy sources and electrification of consumer energy demand are developments in the ongoing energy transition. These developments urge the demand for flexibility in low voltage distribution networks, on the one hand caused by the intermittency of renewable energy sources, and on the other hand by the high power demand of battery electric vehicles and heat pumps. One of the foremost ways to create flexibility is by using energy storage systems. This paper proposes a method to first optimize the siting, power and capacity rating, technology, and operation of energy storage systems based on the technical and economic value. Secondly the method can be used to make cost- and time-based network planning decisions between network upgrades and network upgrade deferral by energy storage systems. To demonstrate the proposed method, study cases are analyzed of five low voltage distribution networks with different penetrations of photovoltaics, heat pumps and battery electric vehicles. The optimal energy storage systems in the study cases are: flow batteries sited at over 50% of the cable length with a high capacity rating per euro. With the current state of energy storage system development, network upgrade deferral is up to 61% cheaper than network upgrades in the study cases. The energy storage systems can offer additional value by reducing the peak loading of the medium voltage grid which is not taken into account in this research.

In this study, an applicable and low-cost way of improving melting behavior in a rectangular cavity was remarked. There was a preconceived idea that with a single conductive baffle, embedded on the upper wall of the cavity, the melting rate and the amount of heat storage could improve. Therefore, for different locations as well as lengths of a baffle, the heat transfer and melting characteristic of gallium as a phase change material (PCM) in a rectangular cavity were investigated numerically. The cavity has the insulated upper and bottom walls. The sidewalls are regarded to have constant temperatures one higher and another lower than the melting point of gallium. The phase change process is modeled with the fixed grid-based enthalpy-porosity method coupled with the semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE) algorithm. The isotherm lines and streamlines, as well as the liquid fraction and Nusselt number on the hot wall, are considered to present the results at a constant Rayleigh number equal to 106. The results show the baffle imposes noticeable improvement on the melting process of gallium in a rectangular cavity by influencing the feature of convective heat transfer. Investigating the different baffle’s locations (LX/L = 0.2 to 0.9) revealed that when the baffle located at the right half of the cavity, melting initiates from the left side, the more amount of PCM melts in comparison with the other cases. Ultimately, the dimensionless location of LX/L = 0.8 demonstrates the best melting characteristic and the most final liquid fraction. The more liquid-fraction, the more energy storing concluded. It also observed a dimensionless height of LY/L = 0.4 represents the most liquid-fraction compared to the heights of LY/L = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4.

In the 21st century, many countries are starting to use geothermal energy (GTE) as a new energy source. Serbia also has the potential to use it as a renewable energy source. The complex geological structure of its terrain has given rise to a large number of thermomineral springs and geothermal wells. Based on the existing measurements, the geothermal heat flow density in Serbia ranges from 80 to 120 mW/m2, which is above Europe's average (60 mW/m2). Currently, there are 66 projects in Serbia that directly use geothermal energy. There are an estimated 1005 geothermal heat pump units. Their power varies between 10 kW and 40 kW and they operate for 2860 full load hours per year. This paper deals with the development, current state and perspectives of geothermal energy utilization for heating in Serbia. To illustrate the current state of geothermal energy utilization in Serbia, spa settlements Vranjska Banja and Gornja Trepča, as well as the Bogatić Municipality have been singled out as examples of good practice. The presented analysis includes determining the available amount of geothermal energy and its utilization for district heating or heating of selected public facilities. The concept and methodology of the presented research are based on data collection through literature review, surveys and field research. The analysis confirms the cost-effectiveness of using geothermal energy and reveals numerous ecological advantages over other energy sources. However, it was concluded that аlthough there is potential, geothermal sources, as a renewable energy source, are used negligibly in Serbia.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2020Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Mehdi Jahangiri; Amir Houshang Mahmoudi; Rouhollah Yadollahi Farsani;Abstract The configuration of a latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) is an important factor considered by manufacturers of heat storage systems.
