However, biofuels affect, among other properties, the distillation curve of gasoline, which is subject to strict regulations. This work presents a simple mathematical model capable of accurately predicting the influence that the addition of these oxygenates has on the distillation curve. In order to address this issue, it is essential to find a simple mathematical correlation between the boiling temperatures of the hydrocarbons present in gasoline and the properties (boiling temperature and volume or molar concentration of ethanol) of the corresponding azeotropic mixtures formed with ethanol. Power functions have been assumed to model the temperature composition diagrams of the vapour-liquid equilibrium. Experimental data previously published by these and other authors have been used to fit and validate the model. The results provided by the mathematical model can be of great interest to understand the process of fuel evaporation in spark-ignition engines or the adjustment of distillation cuts in refineries, in order to comply with the regulations, in terms of the distillation curve, after adding ethanol or ethyl tert-butyl ether.

Said Drid in OpenAIREThe present paper exhibits a real time assessment of a robust Energy Management Strategy (EMS) for battery-super capacitor (SC) Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS). The proposed algorithm, dedicated to an electric vehicular application, is based on a self-gain scheduled controller, which guarantees the H∞ performance for a class of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. Assuming that the duty cycle of the involved DC-DC converters are considered as the variable parameters, that can be captured in real time, and forwarded to the controller to ensure both; the performance and robustness of the closed-loop system. The subsequent controller is therefore time-varying and it is automatically scheduled according to each parameter variation. This algorithm has been validated through experimental results provided by a tailor-made test bench including both the HESS and the vehicle traction emulation system. The experimental results demonstrate the overall stability of the system, where the proposed LPV supervisor successfully accomplishes a power frequency splitting in an adequate way, respecting the dynamic of the sources. The proposed solution provides significant performances for different speed levels.

Luisa F. Cabeza in OpenAIREThermal performance of SS-PCM composites, simulating building envelope conditions, is difficult to asset with traditional laboratory equipment. However, in this work, the evaluation of three SS-PCM based on eutectic fatty acid mixtures of capric-myristic (CA/MA), lauric-myristic (LA/MA) and palmitic-stearic (PA/SA) was accomplished by a testing setup that allows to test samples in steady-state and dynamic conditions. Moreover, a SS-PCM-based acrylic plaster was evaluated as a fiber cement siding finish. The obtained values were used to calculate the thermal transmittance (U-value), heat storage capacity, and thermal inertia parameters under a simulated diurnal cycle. Results showed that the use of phase change materials in powder form increase thermal lag between 148% and 180% and present a decrement factor <0.2. Furthermore, building envelopes as fiber cement siding with a SS-PCM-based acrylic plaster coating decreased 20.8% the indoor temperature, increase 67.26% the thermal lag and decrease 9% of the decrement factor. Therefore, low-cost and worldwide availability of by-products materials is being assessed for sensible heat thermal energy storage applications based on cementitious materials. A greater concern is especially required focusing on the thermal stability of cement paste under high temperature cycled conditions. Moreover, compatibility between cement type and supplementary cementitious materials is determinant for the proper performance reliability. In this study, benchmark cement types were selected, i.e., ordinary Portland and calcium aluminate. Six supplementary cementitious materials were added to both types of cement in a content of 10 % and 25 %. Thermo-mechanical properties were studied before and after 10 thermal cycles from 290 to 650 ◦C. Results after thermal cycling showed that calcium aluminate cement paste mixtures maintained their integrity. However, most ordinary Portland cement paste mixtures were deteriorated: only mixtures with 25 % cement replacement with chamotte, flay ash, and ground granulated blast furnace slag remained without cracks. Calcium aluminate cement paste mixtures obtained the highest compressive strength, for partial replacement of cement with 10 % of chamotte, ground granulated blast furnace slag, and iron silicate. The incorporation of supplementary cementitious materials did not increase the thermal conductivity. Karel Mařík in OpenAIREAbstract The gas suction rate of a conventional liquid–gas ejector pump was measured on a modular pilot plant unit utilizing convergent nozzles and a water–air system. Hydraulic characteristics were measured for various water flow rates, suction and discharge pressures, and ejector geometries, covering a wide range of configurations and operating conditions. The device configurations, providing the most stable and reproducible results, were identified. The air flow rates measured with these configurations were correlated by a simple, three-parameter correlation with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 11%. The performance and behavior of the ejector in less stable configurations are discussed and the recommendations for the design of optimally operating units are provided. Finally, the correlation is tested against available literature data. The ejectors with comparable geometry agree well with the proposed correlation (within 20% RSD). The reasonable agreement with the discussed differences is found for other literature data. This comparison results in the validation of the proposed correlation to provide a safe prediction of minimal gas entrainment in units of various geometries, orientation and operating conditions.

Gonçalo Duarte in OpenAIREAbstract In the current transition to a smarter and more efficient transportation system, battery electric vehicle mileage and the time required for charging are still two main constraints that need to be overcome to enable a larger penetration of electric vehicles. Moreover, the few charging stations available are a consequence of the “supply and demand” problem. Consequently, wireless dynamic recharging can be a complementary solution to address the problems of light-duty electric mobility and an added-value towards autonomous vehicles. Consequently, this paper presents an innovative approach based on real world mobility patterns collected for a sample in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, to assess users’ electric vehicle feasibility by assessing different recharging scenarios, comparing stationary and dynamic recharging scenarios. The results indicate that at least 15 % more drivers would be eligible to own an electric vehicle if wireless charging was available. Moreover, wireless charging reduces the range of battery used, with stationary charging requiring circa 3.2 times more battery range. The developed approach confirms that wireless dynamic recharging can significantly change the framework of current electric mobility limitations, reducing range anxiety issues, contributing to redesign electric vehicle battery capacity and overcome barriers in stationary charging deployment and availability.

Bianca Maria Vaglieco in OpenAIREGrowing interest of the European Union to introduce new emission regulations seeking to lower the particle cut-off size down to the current limit set at 23 nm, has made crucial to achieve an extensive comprehension on their nature. In this regard, it is necessary to deepen their knowledge under different engine technologies, operating conditions, fuel properties and after-treatment devices and how their measure is affected by the sampling and dilution procedure. This paper provides a study on the sub-23 nm particles emitted from a small direct/port fuel injection, spark ignition engine fueled with gasoline, ethanol and a 30% v/v ethanol/gasoline blend, at different operating conditions. Particles were measured both upstream and downstream of a three-way catalyst. The conditions of the sampling were changed in order to investigate the volatile organic fraction. For this purpose, the exhaust gas sample was diluted through a Particulate Measurement Programme compliant system. The temperature of the first dilution stage and of evaporation chamber were changed to discriminate the volatile compounds by enhancing the condensation and the nucleation processes. An engine Exhaust Particle Sizer was used for the sizing and the counting of the particles in the range 5.6-560 nm. The results show a strong dependence of the sub-23 nm particle emissions from the engine operating condition and the fuel type. A moderate impact of the three-way catalyst was instead observed. Moreover, a significant effect of the dilution parameters in the sampling system was noted pointing out the importance to define an appropriate protocol for the measurement of the sub-23 nm particles.

Wim Beyne in OpenAIREWorldwide, the energy consumption of refrigeration systems increased by 50% in the last 20 years. Currently, active refrigeration systems are often used to maintain cold chains in industry. However, there are remarkable drawbacks in the operation of active systems such as susceptibility to blackouts in the power supply and vibrations during their operation. Therefore, to overcome the aforementioned problems, passive cold chain transport using latent thermal energy storage systems arose as a potential solution. However, these systems require long charging times due to the low thermal conductivity of most phase change materials. In that sense, this paper presents a novel design of a cold storage battery with metal foam enhanced phase change material. The peak efflux of energy and solidification time of the battery is correlated as a function of the inlet temperature and mass flow rate of the heat transfer fluid with a root mean square deviation of 11.4%. The solidification time prediction allows determining the geometry which results in the maximum efflux of energy density for a given energy density. Moreover, the cold battery is placed in an insulated container to analyse its performance during transport. Results show that the tested refrigeration battery can act as a standalone refrigeration system during 15 h. However, improvements in the design of the insulated container are suggested to increase the performance of the system along the discharging cycle.

Luca Schenato in OpenAIREFor the design of ground-source heat-pump systems, the local subsoil is an invariant factor. To improve the evaluation of the local heat exchange capability, significant efforts recently have been devoted to identifying the ground thermal conductivity vertical profile. In recent years, an innovative method using hybrid optic fiber cables inserted into the ground has been developed. The technique relies on copper wires that thermally stimulate the ground. Optical fibers measure the temperature variation over time all along the cable at a high spatial and temporal resolution. In this work, the hybrid cable was grouted into a 125-m well located in the Po Plain in Northern Italy. The provided core defined the geological environment as a continuous succession of unconsolidated alluvial deposits of very limited thickness, grouped in 15 different granulometric units. Three enhanced thermal response test (ETRT) data sets were acquired in different seasons; for 5 days of heating followed by 5 days of recovery, the soil temperature was recorded continuously along the well, with a spatial resolution of 1 m. A new approach using a multiple linear regression is proposed to analyze the data sets to distinguish the thermal conductivity of each individual granulometric unit. The obtained thermal conductivity values were compared and discussed considering the standard thermal response test outputs and the thermal conductivity data obtained from direct measurements performed on the cores. The analytical method's reliability stands due to the high repeatability of the obtained results, despite the increased complexity of the treated geological setting.

However, when designing the power converter of a BESS or when studying the interaction between BESSs and other application components, relying on a real battery makes the process cumbersome, expensive, and time-consuming. Moreover, the battery could even suffer damages. The aim of the work is to show that it is possible to exploit suitable battery models and related parameter identification methodologies, as well as power converters and related control techniques, to develop a hardware device that emulates any given battery. In particular, this paper shows the design and the experimental prototype of a Li-ion battery emulator that is capable of both sourcing and sinking power at kilowatt scale. Unlike other similar devices available in the market or described in the technical literature, the proposed device is low-cost, it injects power into the grid during sink operation, and it can also reproduce battery dynamics. Design criteria are given in the manuscript. The proposed battery emulator has been tested and experimentally validated. The obtained device allows reducing the cost, time, and complexity of performing system tests in Li-ion BESS applications.
