    Authors: Kristen, Johanna Gloria;

    This dissertation examines how water sports wear companies can implement circular economy principles. To answer the research question, I adopted a qualitative research approach, utilized the ReSolve framework and conducted a comparative case study. I studied five wetsuit companies, operating on the European market and striving to implement sustainability into their core business strategy. Wetsuit brands face challenges and tensions in implementing full circular systems as recycling old wetsuit material into new fully-functioning wetsuits is not possible yet. The findings show that brands are individually responsible in implementing principles working towards circularity. The degree of engagement in establishing a product loop varies throughout the industry, as some brands lack solutions, where others have already established counteractions. This reveals potential to learn and grow from each other. However, the sector puts great effort into innovating sustainable methods and creating a positive impact even through small gestures - for instance by innovating alternative wetsuit components, using renewable energy sources, decreasing waste during the supply chain and establishing recycling mechanisms to turn old wetsuit material into products such as yoga mats, shoes or mulch mats for trees. Moreover, brands as well take actions on a socio-economic level by donating or supporting various projects. Generally seen, the water sports wear industry operates encouragingly on this matter, inviting other industries to take an example and follow. Esta dissertação analisa como empresas de vestuário para desportos aquáticos podem implementar a economia circular. Para responder à questão de investigação, adaptei uma abordagem qualitativa, utilizei o quadro ReSolve e fiz um estudo de caso comparativo. Estudei cinco empresas de fatos de mergulho na Europa que procuram implementar a sustentabilidade na sua estratégia de negócio. As marcas enfrentam desafios na implementação de sistemas circulares completos, pois a reciclagem de materiais usados ainda não é viável para a produção de fatos funcionais e os resultados mostram que as marcas são responsáveis pela circularidade. O grau de empenhamento no estabelecimento de um ciclo do produto varia em toda a indústria, sendo que algumas marcas não têm soluções, contudo outras já agem. Este facto revela um potencial de aprendizagem e crescimento mútuo. No entanto, o setor inova em métodos sustentáveis, reduzindo resíduos e reciclando material usado em produtos alternativos. Também tomam medidas socioeconómicas, apoiando diferentes projetos. De um modo geral, a indústria de vestuário para desportos aquáticos atua de forma encorajadora, convidando outras indústrias a seguirem o seu exemplo.

    Authors: Monteiro, Maria Madalena Bandeira Brás;

    Nowadays, we are surrounded by environmental, social, and economic challenges, which have triggered the increasing interest from governments, businesses, and individuals in sustainability. Furthermore, the evidence of the environmental repercussions caused by corporations has intensified the pressures from external and internal entities to shift towards more sustainable businesses. This study aims to assess the relationship between financial performance and the implementation of environmentally sustainable practices. The analysis focuses on Portuguese small and medium enterprises (SMEs) between 2010 and 2017 and intends to understand if financial performance can be an attractive incentive for SMEs to invest in greener practices. A quantitative approach was employed, using a questionnaire database from Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE). The findings indicate mixed conclusions depending on the measure of financial performance considered and also suggest statistically significant relationships between most of the sustainability and financial performance measures. A negative linkage was concluded between environmental performance measured by green investments and financial performance, when measured as the ROA, ROE, sales growth or assets growth. However, when measuring sustainability as energy efficiency or green hiring the findings demonstrate a non-statistically significant but positive correlation with financial performance. Besides, there is a direct relationship between Debt Ratio and green investing, and overall, a company with a better performance regarding the environment is expected to have higher leverage. Atualmente, estamos rodeados de desafios ambientais, sociais e económicos, que têm vindo a despoletar o crescente interesse dos Governos, empresas e indivíduos por temas de sustentabilidade. Para além disso, a clara evidência das repercussões ambientais causadas pelas empresas tem intensificado pressões de entidades externas e internas para tornar os negócios mais sustentáveis. Este estudo pretende avaliar a relação entre a performance financeira e a implementação de práticas de sustentabilidade ambiental. Com um foco nas pequenas e médias empresas (PMEs) portuguesas entre 2010 e 2017, intenta-se perceber se a performance financeira pode ser um incentivo atrativo para as PMEs investirem em práticas mais verdes. O estudo teve uma abordagem quantitativa, utilizando uma base de dados de questionários do Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE). Os resultados indicam conclusões mistas, dependendo da medida de performance financeira considerada e sugerem ainda relações estatisticamente significativas entre a maioria das medidas de sustentabilidade e performance financeira. Concluiu-se uma ligação negativa entre performance ambiental avaliada pela dimensão dos investimentos ambientais e a performance financeira, enquanto retorno dos ativos, retorno do capital, crescimento de vendas e crescimento de ativos. No entanto, considerando a sustentabilidade como a eficiência energética ou como a contratação de trabalhadores com responsabilidades ambientais, os resultados, apesar de demonstrarem uma ligação não estatisticamente significativa, revelam uma relação positiva com a performance financeira. Ainda, existe uma relação direta entre o Índice de Dívida e o investimento verde e, em geral, uma empresa com melhor desempenho em relação ao meio ambiente terá maior alavancagem.

    Authors: Antunes, Beatriz Ribeiro Mendes;

    The main goal of this dissertation is to assess what factors have impact on the willingness to pay for a hotel with sustainable practices, in Portugal. This is an important topic to analyze since tourism is so important for the global economy and the increasingly need of a more sustainable tourism practice worldwide. However, it is important to have a segmentation on which behavior to expect from the customer. To do this, demographics, travelling habits, attitudes towards green lodging, price consciousness on hospitality industry and whether or not people were environmentally friendly, were considered to be the best predictors of what would make the willingness to pay fluctuate for the portuguese client. The main finding was that the variables Attitudes and Client profile (gender and pro-environmental) do have a significant impact on the willingness to pay more towards green and sustainable practices on the hotel industry. Although it was previously thought that travelling habits and price sensitivity would also have impact due to previous literature, that was not true for the sample in study and it describes the behaviour of the portuguese client. O objetivo principal deste estudo é avaliar quais são os fatores que têm maior impacto na disponibilidade para pagar mais por um hotel com práticas sustentáveis, em Portugal. Este tópico é importante para analisar, devido à importância do turismo a nível global e a crescente necessidade de um turismo mais sustentável em todo o mundo. No entanto, é essencial que seja feito um perfil de consumidor, para saber que comportamento esperar do cliente. Para mostrar isto, demográficos, hábitos de viagem, atitudes para com práticas sustentáveis, sensibilidade com preço para a indústria hoteleira e se a pessoa se identifica como amiga do ambiente, foram considerados ser os fatores que poderiam melhor prever o que faz flutuar a disponibilidade para pagar mais para hotéis sustentáveis. Estes fatores foram identificados em literatura anterior, como método para melhor definir a atitude do consumidor. A principal conclusão é que as variáveis atitudes e o perfil do cliente (género e pro-ambiental) têm significância no impacto da disponibilidade para pagar mais por práticas sustentáveis dentro da indústria hoteleira. No entanto, os hábitos de viagem e a sensibilidade de preço também teriam impacto devido a estudos anteriormente feitos da literatura revista, mas isso não foi verdade para a amostra estudada, o que levanta dúvidas sobre o comportamento do cliente português.

    This dissertation tries to show the importance of bioeconomy through the analysis of its economic performance in the European region, by creating a dashboard numerical model and, posteriorly, the presentation of economic indicators, in Power BI. Moreover, it analyses how bioeconomic performance relates to European Union’s policies towards a sustainable economy, with the inclusion of indicators that measure and relate to sustainability. By analyzing bioeconomic performance and sustainability parameters, with the help of a modern data analysis dynamic tool as Power BI, an overview on current bioeconomic performance within European Union’s 27 Member States, and bioeconomy’s sectors, is achieved, enlightening how bioeconomy is evolving and is characterized in the European context. Esta dissertação tenta mostrar a importância da bioeconomia através da análise da sua performance económica no contexto da região da União Europeia, por via da criação de um modelo numérico numa dashboard e, posteriormente, a apresentação de indicadores económicos, no Power BI. Adicionalmente, analisa de que forma é que a performance económica se relaciona com as políticas da União Europeia de promoção de uma economia mais sustentável, através da inclusão de indicadores que medem e se relacionam com a sustentabilidade. Analisando a performance bioeconómica e os parâmetros de sustentabilidade, com a ajuda de uma ferramenta moderna e dinâmica de análise de dados como o Power BI, uma visão geral sobre a atual performance bioeconómica dos 27 Estados-Membros da União Europeia, assim como sobre os setores da Bioeconomia, é conseguida, esclarecendo de que forma é que a bioeconomia se está a desenvolver e é caracterizada no contexto Europeu.

    Authors: Nunes, Sara Deolinda da Costa;

    A presente dissertação aborda a Bioeconomia enquanto estratégia económica que tem como plano de ação a utilização sustentável dos recursos renováveis para fins industriais e alimentares, garantindo simultaneamente a proteção do meio ambiente. Dado o caráter transversal da Bioeconomia esta constitui uma oportunidade única para enfrentar desafios atuais da sociedade interligados, tais como: a segurança alimentar, a escassez de recursos naturais, a dependência de recursos fósseis e as alterações climáticas, a par com um crescimento económico sustentável. Com este trabalho pretende-se compreender a Bioeconomia enquanto novo paradigma económico. É analisada a Bioeconomia na produção de recursos biológicos renováveis e na conversão dos mesmos recursos e fluxos de resíduos em produtos de valor acrescentado, tais como alimentos para consumo humano e animal, produtos de base biológica e bioenergia. Neste contexto, a investigação e a inovação são determinantes, assim como a interação entre as atuais políticas de promoção da Bioeconomia a nível da União Europeia e do mundo, de modo a fomentar as melhores práticas em questões globais em domínios como os da saúde, alterações demográficas e bem-estar da população mundial e com vista à implementação de uma política bioeconómica global. Com o trabalho, pretende-se ainda obter uma visão de como a Bioeconomia vem sendo implementada no mundo, verificando-se que vem avançando a um ritmo acelerado em muitos países europeus, bem como em alguns países americanos e asiáticos. This dissertation is about Bioeconomy as an economic strategy that aims the sustainable use of renewable resources for industrial and food purposes, while ensuring the protection of the environment. Given the cross-cutting nature of Bioeconomy, it is a unique opportunity to address today's interlinked societal challenges such as: food security, natural resources scarcity, dependence on fossil fuels and climate change, together with sustainable economic growth. The dissertation aims a better understanding of Bioeconomy as a new economic paradigm. It focuses the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of the same resources and waste streams into value added products such as food and feed, biobased products and bioenergy. In this context, research and innovation are crucial, as well as the interaction between the current promotion policies of Bioeconomy in the European Union and in the world, in order to promote best practices in global issues such as health, demographic change and well-being of the world's population and also aiming the implementation of a global Bioeconomy strategy. The dissertation also aims to get a global picture about how Bioeconomy is being implemented worldwide. It has gained special emphasis in many European countries, as well as in some American and Asian countries.

    Authors: Murta, Afonso de Sousa Gomes Casqueiro;

    Sustainability is an unavoidable subject of the 21st century, and research has gone into understanding financial advantages companies may have from being more sustainable. This research paper explores the link between environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings of European firms and their cost of debt capital – a relationship hypothesised to be negative. With multiple regression analysis, including controls for firm characteristics, year and sector fixed effects, this dissertation identifies a possible concave quadratic relationship. Regressed variables are lagged one period in relation to the dependent variable, to address endogeneity issues. In the general sample, the relationship between the variables is positive, but by subdividing the sample into quintiles of the ESG rating distribution, a negative relationship is found in top quintiles while the positive relationship is still seen in lower quintiles. The conclusion of this dissertation is threefold: (1) the top 20% ESG performers have a statistically lower average and median cost of debt than the bottom ones, meaning the firms that have the top ESG ratings are better off in the debt markets; (2) on average, higher quintiles of the ESG rating see a negative relationship with the cost of debt; and (3) the coefficients of the ESG rating squared are all significant, thus confirming a significant concave relationship between the ESG rating and the cost of debt. The results, arguably economically modest, reveal an added benefit for companies that operate sustainably, besides ethical reasons or the other financial benefits identified by previous literature. A sustentabilidade é um tema inevitável do século XXI, e vários estudos já exploraram os benefícios económicos de práticas sustentáveis. Esta dissertação explora a relação entre a avaliação de fatores ambientais, sociais e de governança (ESG) de empresas europeias e o seu custo da dívida – uma relação que se supõe ser negativa. Ao usar análise de regressão múltipla, incluindo parâmetros de controlo de características da empresa, de ano e sector económico, esta dissertação identifica uma relação possivelmente quadrática côncava. As variáveis preditivas são desfasadas de um período, para corrigir eventuais problemas de endogeneidade. Na amostra global, verifica-se uma relação positiva entre as variáveis, mas, ao subdividir a amostra em quintis da distribuição da avaliação ESG, verifica-se uma relação negativa nos quintis superiores. Três conclusões decorrem desta dissertação: (1) as empresas no top 20% de avaliação ESG têm um custo da dívida médio e mediano estatisticamente inferiores ao dos 20% inferiores; (2) em média, os quintis superiores mostram uma relação negativa entre o custo da dívida e a avaliação ESG; e (3) os coeficientes da avaliação ESG ao quadrado são todos significativos, confirmando uma relação quadrática côncava significativa entre o custo da dívida e a avaliação ESG. Estes resultados, apesar de economicamente modestos, revelam uma vantagem adicional para as empresas que operam de maneira sustentável, além de razões éticas ou outros benefícios económicos previamente estudados.

    Given the challenges faced by companies and society in general in terms of mitigating the effects of climate change and digitalisation, fostering and supporting digital and sustainable entrepreneurship represents a fundamental goal. Our research seeks to study the impact of national entrepreneurship systems (NESs) on what is known as the twin transition. Through recourse to dynamic panel econometric techniques applied to various databases (Eurostat, FAO, GEM, UN, and World Bank), we were able to evaluate the effect of the entrepreneurial attitudes, abilities and aspirations, and components of NESs, on the twin transition (digital and environmental). Globally, our results stand out for the positive interactions established by the entrepreneurial attitudes, abilities and aspirations, as pillars of NESs, with the digital and environmental transitions. Furthermore, the level of national economic development returns a positive moderating effect on the relationship between the NES components and the twin transitions.

    Authors: Vilaça, Patrícia Pinheiro da Silva;

    Atualmente, existe uma necessidade cada vez maior das empresas adotarem algum tipo de medida de responsabilidade social corporativa. É uma obrigação da empresa alcançar metas sustentáveis de longo prazo para os seus funcionários e também para o mundo em geral. O papel do gestor de operações é conseguir balançar todos os desafios que surgem à medida que o ambiente económico, social político e tecnológico altera. Há toda uma análise necessária entre os incentivos que o governo de cada país fornece e o proveito que a empresa consegue retirar da implementação destas políticas. Surge aqui a questão fulcral se a adoção destas políticas não é meramente por interesses económicos por parte destas organizações. O presente trabalho visa, por isso, avaliar a aplicação de medidas de responsabilidade social corporativa em empresas internacionais. Foi elaborado através do estudo e análise de duas organizações internacionais com as suas operações já delineadas, a FARFETCH e a FERPINTA. Ao longo do trabalho são avaliados os desafios enfrentados por estes dois grupos internacionais cujo as indústrias nas quais operam são inequivocamente diferentes. Inicialmente, realiza-se revisão de literatura, de seguida é feito um resumo dos dois grupos. Posteriormente, é feita a análise das entrevistas levadas a cabo com diferentes colaboradores e de diferentes departamentos das empresas de forma a recolher uma amostra variada dos pontos de vistas e das ações de responsabilidade social levadas a cabo. Por fim, é feita uma análise geral com a análise dos resultados das entrevistas e dados recolhidos. Após recolhidas e formuladas as análises, são sugeridas possíveis ações de implementação por parte das empresas. Currently, there is an increasing need for companies to adopt some kind of corporate social responsibility measure. It is an obligation of the company to achieve sustainable long-term goals for its employees and also for the world at large. The operations manager's role is to balance all the challenges that arise as the economic, social, political, and technological environment changes. There is a whole necessary analysis between the incentives that the government of each country provides and the benefit that the company is able to derive from the implementation of these policies. Here, the central question arises whether the adoption of these policies is not merely for economic interests. The present work aims, therefore, to evaluate the application of corporate social responsibility measures in international companies. It was prepared through the study and analysis of two international organizations with their operations already outlined, FARFETCH and FERPINTA. Throughout the work, the challenges faced by these two international groups whose industries in which they operate are unequivocally different are evaluated. Initially, a literature review is carried out, followed by a summary of the two groups. Subsequently, an analysis of the interviews is carried out with different employees and from different departments of the companies in order to collect a varied sample of the points of view and the social responsibility actions implemented. Finally, a general analysis is made with the evaluation of the results of the interviews and data collected. After collecting and formulating the analyses, possible implementation actions by the companies are suggested.

    Authors: Gaspar, Luís Pedro Cerdeira e Vasconcelos dos Santos;

    This study aims to investigate the effects of renewable energy consumption on economic growth of major renewable energy consuming countries across the globe. It is used the Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index developed by Ernst & Young Global Limited, and were chosen 31 top renewable energy consuming countries to explain the growth process between 1990 and 2019. Panel estimation techniques are employed to cope with heterogeneity between countries and cointegration between variables. The results confirm the existence of long-run dynamics between traditional and energy inputs to economic growth. The findings from the average country indicate that renewable energy consumption has a significative and positive impact on economic output. It was also carried out a analysis of long-run output elasticities for each country. The findings confirm the growth hypothesis for 14 out of 31 countries, suggesting that, in most of these economies, governments, policy advisers, energy planners and associated bodies should promote investments in renewable energy sources. Este estudo tem como objetivo investigar os efeitos do consumo de energia renovável no crescimento económico dos principais países consumidores de energia renovável em todo o mundo. É utilizado o Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index desenvolvido pela Ernst & Young Global Limited, e foram escolhidos os 31 principais países consumidores de energia renovável para explicar o processo de crescimento entre 1990 e 2019. Empregam-se técnicas de estimação em painel para lidar com a heterogeneidade entre os países e a cointegração das variáveis. Os resultados confirmam a existência de uma dinâmica de longo prazo entre inputs tradicionais e energéticos e crescimento econômico. Os resultados para o país médio indicam que o consumo de energia renovável tem um impacto significativo e positivo na produção económica. Também foi realizada uma análise das elasticidades do produto de longo prazo para cada país e confirma-se a hipótese de crescimento para 14 dos 31 países, sugerindo que, na maioria destas economias, governos, conselheiros políticos, planeadores de energia e órgãos associados devem promover investimentos em fontes de energia renovável.

    Authors: Cabral, Frederico Miguel Leite;

    O ecoturismo é, hoje, definido como uma forma responsável de viajar, para áreas naturais, tendo por base conservação do meio ambiente e do bem-estar da população local, enquanto envolvendo a interpretação e a educação. Os objetivos deste estudo assentaram na caracterização do ecoturismo e na avaliação do seu impacto no desenvolvimento sustentável da ilha de São Miguel. Foram analisadas as perceções de três grupos da ilha de São Miguel: turistas, residentes e empresas do setor turístico. O propósito desta investigação empírica foi o de caracterizar as perceções recolhidas destes grupos quanto ao impacto socioeconómico e ambiental relativamente ao ecoturismo respondendo, à Q.I.: Qual o impacto socioeconómico e ambiental do ecoturismo nos principais stakeholders que alberga o turismo na ilha de São Miguel? A amostra dos turistas é caracterizada por ser 59,5% composta por turistas portugueses, os principais fatores de escolha deste destino são: “Beleza das paisagens”, “Sossego e tranquilidade/relaxamento” e “Contacto com a natureza”. A autoavaliação da preocupação ambiental por parte do turista foi alta, embora, 45% dos inquiridos não denotaram impactos do turismo no meio ambiente. A amostra dos residentes é composta em 73,1% por residentes de Ponta Delgada. O residente padrão da amostra denota que mediante o aumento do turismo verificou-se alguns aspetos positivos, mas, regra geral, perdeu qualidade de vida. Adicionalmente, é evidenciado, o aumento do lixo e da degradação paisagística e o seu desagrado com o planeamento do desenvolvimento turístico da região por parte do governo. Por último, 64,4% das empresas do setor turístico pertencem ao setor do alojamento e 96,6% tem origem regional. As empresas inquiridas avaliam de forma elevada a sua preocupação ambiental, mas 75,4% das empresas, revela que seria possível desenvolver a sua atividade de uma forma mais ecológica. Nowadays, ecotourism is defined as a responsible way to travel to a natural area, conserving the environment and the well-being of the local people, while involving the education and interpretation of the surrounding. The goal of this study was to characterize the ecotourism and evaluate its impact on the sustainable development of the island of São Miguel. The perceptions of three groups of people on São Miguel were analysed: tourists, residents and companies in the tourism sector. This empirical investigation characterized the perceptions gathered from these groups, regarding the socioeconomic and environmental impact of ecotourism, therefore answering the R.Q.: What is the socioeconomic and environmental impact of ecotourism on the main stakeholders of tourism on the island of São Miguel? The tourist’s sample is mainly composed of Portuguese tourists (59,5%), and the main factors when choosing São Miguel as their destination are: “Beautiful landscapes”, “Peace and quiet/relaxation” and “Contact with nature”. The tourists reported high environmental concern. Although, 45% of the respondents did not denote tourism impacts on the environment. The sample of residents is mainly made up of people living in Ponta Delgada (73,1%). The standard resident of this sample denotes that with the increase in tourism, there has been some positive aspects, but generally, quality of life has decreased. In addition, there has been an increase in garbage, landscape degradation and displeasure with the government planning for tourism development. Finally, 64,4% of the companies in the tourism sector belong to the accommodation industry and 96,6% of all companies inquired are characterized as local companies. The surveyed companies assess their environmental concern as high, but 75,4% of the companies reveal that it would be possible to develop their activity in a more ecological way.

    Authors: Kristen, Johanna Gloria;

    Authors: Monteiro, Maria Madalena Bandeira Brás;

    Authors: Antunes, Beatriz Ribeiro Mendes;

    Authors: Silva, Sílvia Gomes Monteiro da;

    Authors: Nunes, Sara Deolinda da Costa;

    Authors: Murta, Afonso de Sousa Gomes Casqueiro;

    Authors: Vilaça, Patrícia Pinheiro da Silva;

    Authors: Gaspar, Luís Pedro Cerdeira e Vasconcelos dos Santos;

    This study aims to investigate the effects of renewable energy consumption on economic growth of major renewable energy consuming countries across the globe. It is used the Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index developed by Ernst & Young Global Limited, and were chosen 31 top renewable energy consuming countries to explain the growth process between 1990 and 2019. Panel estimation techniques are employed to cope with heterogeneity between countries and cointegration between variables. The results confirm the existence of long-run dynamics between traditional and energy inputs to economic growth. The findings from the average country indicate that renewable energy consumption has a significative and positive impact on economic output. It was also carried out a analysis of long-run output elasticities for each country. The findings confirm the growth hypothesis for 14 out of 31 countries, suggesting that, in most of these economies, governments, policy advisers, energy planners and associated bodies should promote investments in renewable energy sources. Este estudo tem como objetivo investigar os efeitos do consumo de energia renovável no crescimento económico dos principais países consumidores de energia renovável em todo o mundo. É utilizado o Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index desenvolvido pela Ernst & Young Global Limited, e foram escolhidos os 31 principais países consumidores de energia renovável para explicar o processo de crescimento entre 1990 e 2019. Empregam-se técnicas de estimação em painel para lidar com a heterogeneidade entre os países e a cointegração das variáveis. Os resultados confirmam a existência de uma dinâmica de longo prazo entre inputs tradicionais e energéticos e crescimento econômico. Os resultados para o país médio indicam que o consumo de energia renovável tem um impacto significativo e positivo na produção económica. Também foi realizada uma análise das elasticidades do produto de longo prazo para cada país e confirma-se a hipótese de crescimento para 14 dos 31 países, sugerindo que, na maioria destas economias, governos, conselheiros políticos, planeadores de energia e órgãos associados devem promover investimentos em fontes de energia renovável.

    Authors: Cabral, Frederico Miguel Leite;
