Six subunits (PFD1‐6) form a jellyfish‐like heterohexameric PFD complex and function in protein folding and cytoskeleton organization. However, little is known about its function in plant cell wall‐related processes. Here, we report the functional characterization of a PFD gene from Populus deltoides, designated as PdPFD2.2. There are two copies of PFD2 in Populus, and PdPFD2.2 was ubiquitously expressed with high transcript abundance in the cambial region. PdPFD2.2 can physically interact with DELLA protein RGA1_8g, and its subcellular localization is affected by the interaction. In P. deltoides transgenic plants overexpressing PdPFD2.2, the lignin syringyl/guaiacyl ratio was increased, but cellulose content and crystallinity index were unchanged. In addition, the total released sugar (glucose and xylose) amounts were increased by 7.6% and 6.1%, respectively, in two transgenic lines. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that secondary metabolic pathways, including lignin and flavonoid biosynthesis, were affected by overexpressing PdPFD2.2. A total of eight hub transcription factors (TFs) were identified based on TF binding sites of differentially expressed genes in Populus transgenic plants overexpressing PdPFD2.2. In addition, several known cell wall‐related TFs, such as MYB3, MYB4, MYB7, TT8 and XND1, were affected by overexpression of PdPFD2.2. These results suggest that overexpression of PdPFD2.2 can reduce biomass recalcitrance and PdPFD2.2 is a promising target for genetic engineering to improve feedstock characteristics to enhance biofuel conversion and reduce the cost of lignocellulosic biofuel production.

Fernández-Checa;Background: Alcohol‐induced liver injury is associated with decreasedS‐adenosyl‐l‐methionine (SAM)/S‐adenosyl‐l‐homocysteine (SAH) ratio and mitochondrial glutathione (mGSH) depletion, which has been shown to sensitize hepatocytes to tumor necrosis factor (TNF).Aims: As the effect of alcohol on mitochondrial SAM (mSAM) has been poorly characterized, our aim was to examine the status and transport of mSAM in relation to that of mGSH during alcohol intake.Methods: Sprague–Dawley rats were pair fed Lieber–DeCarli diets containing alcohol for 1 to 4 weeks and liver fractionated into cytosol and mitochondria to examine the mSAM transport and its sensitivity to membrane dynamics.Results: We found that cytosol SAM was depleted from the first week of alcohol feeding, with mSAM levels paralleling these changes. Cytosol SAH, however, increased during the first 3 weeks of alcohol intake, whereas its mitochondrial levels remained unchanged. mGSH depletion occurred by 3 to 4 weeks of alcohol intake due to cholesterol‐mediated impaired transport from the cytosol. In contrast to this outcome, the transport of SAM into hepatic mitochondria was unaffected by alcohol intake and resistant to cholesterol‐mediated perturbations in membrane dynamics; furthermore cytosolic SAH accumulation in primary hepatocytes by SAH hydrolase inhibition reproduced the mSAM depletion by alcohol due to the competition of SAH with SAM for mitochondrial transport. However, alcohol feeding did not potentiate the sensitivity to inhibition by SAH accumulation.Conclusions: Alcohol‐induced mSAM depletion precedes that of mGSH and occurs independently of alcohol‐mediated perturbations in membrane dynamics, disproving an inherent defect in the mSAM transport by alcohol. These findings suggest that the early mSAM depletion may contribute to the alterations of mitochondrial membrane dynamics and the subsequent mGSH down‐regulation induced by alcohol feeding.

California's wine grape growers will face increasing challenges under a changing climate as most production occurs near the boundaries of current varieties' climatic thresholds. As part of this study, we developed a method for transforming downscaled climate information from the publicly available Cal-Adapt database into useful and useable climate projections for vineyard managers and advisors in the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area. We shared vineyard-specific projections during interviews of 20 managers and advisors. Overall, interviewees expressed trust in the projections and found them helpful in reducing their psychological distance from climate change. The projections prompted consideration of strategies for managing future climate risk and planning adaptation, with the majority of adaptations associated with long-term decisions such as row orientation, variety selection, dry farming, crop diversification and relocation. Agri-climatic decision support tools such as the one prototyped here may prove especially helpful for incorporating climate adaptation into the long-term business planning and vineyard redevelopment decisions facing managers and advisors in the near future. This approach could be extended to other California wine grape regions or to other perennial crops with expected vulnerabilities to climate change.

However, foliar fungal pathogens, like switchgrass rust, have the potential to significantly reduce switchgrass biomass yield. Despite its importance as a prominent bioenergy crop, a genome-wide comprehensive analysis of NB-LRR disease resistance genes has yet to be performed in switchgrass.In this study, we used a homology-based computational approach to identify 1011 potential NB-LRR resistance gene homologs (RGHs) in the switchgrass genome (v 1.1). In addition, we identified 40 RGHs that potentially contain unique domains including major sperm protein domain, jacalin-like binding domain, calmodulin-like binding, and thioredoxin. RNA-sequencing analysis of leaf tissue from 'Alamo', a rust-resistant switchgrass cultivar, and 'Dacotah', a rust-susceptible switchgrass cultivar, identified 2634 high quality variants in the RGHs between the two cultivars. RNA-sequencing data from field-grown cultivar 'Summer' plants indicated that the expression of some of these RGHs was developmentally regulated.Our results provide useful insight into the molecular structure, distribution, and expression patterns of members of the NB-LRR gene family in switchgrass. These results also provide a foundation for future work aimed at elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying disease resistance in this important bioenergy crop.

However, foliar fungal pathogens, like switchgrass rust, have the potential to significantly reduce switchgrass biomass yield. Despite its importance as a prominent bioenergy crop, a genome-wide comprehensive analysis of NB-LRR disease resistance genes has yet to be performed in switchgrass.In this study, we used a homology-based computational approach to identify 1011 potential NB-LRR resistance gene homologs (RGHs) in the switchgrass genome (v 1.1). In addition, we identified 40 RGHs that potentially contain unique domains including major sperm protein domain, jacalin-like binding domain, calmodulin-like binding, and thioredoxin. Here, we outline: (i) challenges of evaluating food composition; (ii) state-of-the-art omics technology and innovations for the analysis of food; and (iii) application of foodomics as a complementary data-driven approach to revolutionize nutrition and sustainable diets. Featuring efforts of the Periodic Table of Food Initiative, a participatory effort to create a globally shared foodomics platform, we conclude with recommendations to accelerate foodomics in ways that strengthen the capacity of scientists and benefit all people.

It is pivotal to understand the implications of climate change and their effects on mental health. This integrative review aims to summarize the relevant evidence examining the harm climate change may have on mental health, suggest potential mechanisms and discuss implications. Empirical evidence has begun to indicate that negative mental health outcomes are a relevant and notable consequence of climate change. Specifically, these negative outcomes range from increased rates of psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder to higher measures of suicide, aggression and crime. Potential mechanisms are thought to include neuroinflammatory responses to stress, maladaptive serotonergic receptors and detrimental effects on one’s own physical health, as well as the community wellbeing. While climate change and mental health are salient areas of research, the evidence examining an association is limited. Therefore, further work should be conducted to delineate exact pathways of action to explain the mediators and mechanisms of the interaction between climate change and mental health.

Seat belt use during motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) has been shown to alter adults' intra-abdominal injury patterns, although the effect of seat belt use in pregnant women is unclear. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of seat belt use in pregnancy on injuries and outcomes after MVCs.Patients injured by MVCs were identified from the National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2014). The exclusion criteria were transfer from an outside hospital, male or unspecified sex, missing restraint data, and nonchildbearing age. Demographics, clinical/injury data, pregnancy status, seat belt use, and outcomes were collected. Study groups were dichotomized by pregnancy status with subgroup analysis by seat belt use. Univariate/multivariate analyses compared outcomes and determined predictors of seat belt use.After exclusions, 162,964 women were included, of which 680 ( 0.05). Unrestrained pregnant women were more injured (Injury Severity Score: 13 versus 7, P < 0.001), more likely to need emergent operation (14% versus 10%, P < 0.001), and had a longer hospital stay (6 versus 4 d, P = 0.012) than restrained counterparts. On multivariate analysis among pregnant women, seat belt use was associated with age ≥25 y (odds ratio: 2.033, P = 0.001). The lack of restraint use was associated with the position in the passenger seat (odds ratio: 0.521, P = 0.001).Seat belt use in pregnancy does not alter abdominal injury patterns but is associated with lower injury severity, reduced need for emergent surgery, and shortened hospital stay. Public health interventions emphasizing the importance of seat belts could be focused on younger patients and vehicle passengers to reach the high-risk pregnant subset.

Seat belt use during motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) has been shown to alter adults' intra-abdominal injury patterns, although the effect of seat belt use in pregnant women is unclear. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of seat belt use in pregnancy on injuries and outcomes after MVCs.Patients injured by MVCs were identified from the National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2014). The exclusion criteria were transfer from an outside hospital, male or unspecified sex, missing restraint data, and nonchildbearing age. Demographics, clinical/injury data, pregnancy status, seat belt use, and outcomes were collected. Study groups were dichotomized by pregnancy status with subgroup analysis by seat belt use. Univariate/multivariate analyses compared outcomes and determined predictors of seat belt use.After exclusions, 162,964 women were included, of which 680 ( 0.05). Unrestrained pregnant women were more injured (Injury Severity Score: 13 versus 7, P < 0.001), more likely to need emergent operation (14% versus 10%, P < 0.001), and had a longer hospital stay (6 versus 4 d, P = 0.012) than restrained counterparts. On multivariate analysis among pregnant women, seat belt use was associated with age ≥25 y (odds ratio: 2.033, P = 0.001). The lack of restraint use was associated with the position in the passenger seat (odds ratio: 0.521, P = 0.001).Seat belt use in pregnancy does not alter abdominal injury patterns but is associated with lower injury severity, reduced need for emergent surgery, and shortened hospital stay. Public health interventions emphasizing the importance of seat belts could be focused on younger patients and vehicle passengers to reach the high-risk pregnant subset.

The dominant drivers of widespread pathogens, like West Nile virus, can be challenging to identify due to regional variability in vector and host ecology, with past studies producing disparate findings. Here, we used analyses at national and state scales to examine a suite of climatic and intrinsic drivers of continental-scale West Nile virus epidemics, including an empirically derived mechanistic relationship between temperature and transmission potential that accounts for spatial variability in vectors. We found that drought was the primary climatic driver of increased West Nile virus epidemics, rather than within-season or winter temperatures, or precipitation independently. Local-scale data from one region suggested drought increased epidemics via changes in mosquito infection prevalence rather than mosquito abundance. In addition, human acquired immunity following regional epidemics limited subsequent transmission in many states. We show that over the next 30 years, increased drought severity from climate change could triple West Nile virus cases, but only in regions with low human immunity. These results illustrate how changes in drought severity can alter the transmission dynamics of vector-borne diseases.

Maraviroc is an HIV entry inhibitor approved for treatment of both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant HIV strains. The present study evaluated the effects of alcohol on maraviroc pharmacokinetics and the effects of maraviroc on alcohol pharmacokinetics. Methods: Ten healthy adults completed alcohol (1 g/kg) and placebo alcohol pharmacokinetics sessions before and after 7 days of maraviroc administration. Results: Alcohol concentrations increased 12% following maraviroc. Maraviroc pharmacokinetics were unaffected by alcohol. Conclusions: Maraviroc treatment should not be interrupted if alcohol is consumed.

While the range of the virus has been cataloged growing slowly over the last 50 years, the recent explosive expansion in the Americas indicates that the full potential distribution of Zika remains uncertain2-4. Moreover, most current epidemiology relies on its similarities to dengue fever, a phylogenetically closely related disease of unknown similarity in spatial range or ecological niche5,6. Here we compile the first spatially explicit global occurrence dataset from Zika viral surveillance and serological surveys, and construct ecological niche models to test basic hypotheses about its spread and potential establishment. The hypothesis that the outbreak of cases in Mexico and North America are anomalous and outside the ecological niche of the disease, and may be linked to El Nino or similar climatic events, remains plausible at this time7. Comparison of the Zika niche against the known distribution of dengue fever suggests that Zika is more constrained by the seasonality of precipitation and diurnal temperature fluctuations, likely confining the disease to the tropics outside of pandemic scenarios. Projecting the range of the diseases in conjunction with vector species (Aedes africanus,Ae. aegypti, andAe. albopictus) that transmit the pathogens, under climate change, suggests that Zika has potential for northward expansion; but, based on current knowledge, Zika is unlikely to fill the full range its vectors occupy. With recent sexual transmission of the virus known to have occurred in the United States, we caution that our results only apply to the vector-borne aspect of the disease, and while the threat of a mosquito-carried Zika pandemic may be overstated in the media, other transmission modes of the virus may emerge and facilitate naturalization worldwide.

With recent sexual transmission of the virus known to have occurred in the United States, we caution that our results only apply to the vector-borne aspect of the disease, and while the threat of a mosquito-carried Zika pandemic may be overstated in the media, other transmission modes of the virus may emerge and facilitate naturalization worldwide.

Six subunits (PFD1‐6) form a jellyfish‐like heterohexameric PFD complex and function in protein folding and cytoskeleton organization. However, little is known about its function in plant cell wall‐related processes. Here, we report the functional characterization of a PFD gene from Populus deltoides, designated as PdPFD2.2. There are two copies of PFD2 in Populus, and PdPFD2.2 was ubiquitously expressed with high transcript abundance in the cambial region. PdPFD2.2 can physically interact with DELLA protein RGA1_8g, and its subcellular localization is affected by the interaction. In P. deltoides transgenic plants overexpressing PdPFD2.2, the lignin syringyl/guaiacyl ratio was increased, but cellulose content and crystallinity index were unchanged. In addition, the total released sugar (glucose and xylose) amounts were increased by 7.6% and 6.1%, respectively, in two transgenic lines. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that secondary metabolic pathways, including lignin and flavonoid biosynthesis, were affected by overexpressing PdPFD2.2. A total of eight hub transcription factors (TFs) were identified based on TF binding sites of differentially expressed genes in Populus transgenic plants overexpressing PdPFD2.2. In addition, several known cell wall‐related TFs, such as MYB3, MYB4, MYB7, TT8 and XND1, were affected by overexpression of PdPFD2.2. These results suggest that overexpression of PdPFD2.2 can reduce biomass recalcitrance and PdPFD2.2 is a promising target for genetic engineering to improve feedstock characteristics to enhance biofuel conversion and reduce the cost of lignocellulosic biofuel production.

Fernández-Checa;Background: Alcohol‐induced liver injury is associated with decreasedS‐adenosyl‐l‐methionine (SAM)/S‐adenosyl‐l‐homocysteine (SAH) ratio and mitochondrial glutathione (mGSH) depletion, which has been shown to sensitize hepatocytes to tumor necrosis factor (TNF).Aims: As the effect of alcohol on mitochondrial SAM (mSAM) has been poorly characterized, our aim was to examine the status and transport of mSAM in relation to that of mGSH during alcohol intake.Methods: Sprague–Dawley rats were pair fed Lieber–DeCarli diets containing alcohol for 1 to 4 weeks and liver fractionated into cytosol and mitochondria to examine the mSAM transport and its sensitivity to membrane dynamics.Results: We found that cytosol SAM was depleted from the first week of alcohol feeding, with mSAM levels paralleling these changes. Cytosol SAH, however, increased during the first 3 weeks of alcohol intake, whereas its mitochondrial levels remained unchanged. mGSH depletion occurred by 3 to 4 weeks of alcohol intake due to cholesterol‐mediated impaired transport from the cytosol. In contrast to this outcome, the transport of SAM into hepatic mitochondria was unaffected by alcohol intake and resistant to cholesterol‐mediated perturbations in membrane dynamics; furthermore cytosolic SAH accumulation in primary hepatocytes by SAH hydrolase inhibition reproduced the mSAM depletion by alcohol due to the competition of SAH with SAM for mitochondrial transport. However, alcohol feeding did not potentiate the sensitivity to inhibition by SAH accumulation.Conclusions: Alcohol‐induced mSAM depletion precedes that of mGSH and occurs independently of alcohol‐mediated perturbations in membrane dynamics, disproving an inherent defect in the mSAM transport by alcohol. These findings suggest that the early mSAM depletion may contribute to the alterations of mitochondrial membrane dynamics and the subsequent mGSH down‐regulation induced by alcohol feeding.

California's wine grape growers will face increasing challenges under a changing climate as most production occurs near the boundaries of current varieties' climatic thresholds. As part of this study, we developed a method for transforming downscaled climate information from the publicly available Cal-Adapt database into useful and useable climate projections for vineyard managers and advisors in the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area. We shared vineyard-specific projections during interviews of 20 managers and advisors. Overall, interviewees expressed trust in the projections and found them helpful in reducing their psychological distance from climate change. The projections prompted consideration of strategies for managing future climate risk and planning adaptation, with the majority of adaptations associated with long-term decisions such as row orientation, variety selection, dry farming, crop diversification and relocation. Agri-climatic decision support tools such as the one prototyped here may prove especially helpful for incorporating climate adaptation into the long-term business planning and vineyard redevelopment decisions facing managers and advisors in the near future. This approach could be extended to other California wine grape regions or to other perennial crops with expected vulnerabilities to climate change.

However, foliar fungal pathogens, like switchgrass rust, have the potential to significantly reduce switchgrass biomass yield. Despite its importance as a prominent bioenergy crop, a genome-wide comprehensive analysis of NB-LRR disease resistance genes has yet to be performed in switchgrass.In this study, we used a homology-based computational approach to identify 1011 potential NB-LRR resistance gene homologs (RGHs) in the switchgrass genome (v 1.1). In addition, we identified 40 RGHs that potentially contain unique domains including major sperm protein domain, jacalin-like binding domain, calmodulin-like binding, and thioredoxin. RNA-sequencing analysis of leaf tissue from 'Alamo', a rust-resistant switchgrass cultivar, and 'Dacotah', a rust-susceptible switchgrass cultivar, identified 2634 high quality variants in the RGHs between the two cultivars. RNA-sequencing data from field-grown cultivar 'Summer' plants indicated that the expression of some of these RGHs was developmentally regulated.Our results provide useful insight into the molecular structure, distribution, and expression patterns of members of the NB-LRR gene family in switchgrass. These results also provide a foundation for future work aimed at elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying disease resistance in this important bioenergy crop.

Defining food composition in its full chemical and quantitative diversity is central to data-driven decision making for supporting nutrition and sustainable diets. “Foodomics”—the application of omics-technology to characterize and quantify biomolecules to improve wellbeing—has the potential to comprehensively elucidate what is in food, how this composition varies across the food system, and how diet composition as an ensemble of foods guides outcomes for nutrition, health, and sustainability. Here, we outline: (i) challenges of evaluating food composition; (ii) state-of-the-art omics technology and innovations for the analysis of food; and (iii) application of foodomics as a complementary data-driven approach to revolutionize nutrition and sustainable diets. Featuring efforts of the Periodic Table of Food Initiative, a participatory effort to create a globally shared foodomics platform, we conclude with recommendations to accelerate foodomics in ways that strengthen the capacity of scientists and benefit all people.

It is pivotal to understand the implications of climate change and their effects on mental health. This integrative review aims to summarize the relevant evidence examining the harm climate change may have on mental health, suggest potential mechanisms and discuss implications. Empirical evidence has begun to indicate that negative mental health outcomes are a relevant and notable consequence of climate change. Specifically, these negative outcomes range from increased rates of psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder to higher measures of suicide, aggression and crime. Potential mechanisms are thought to include neuroinflammatory responses to stress, maladaptive serotonergic receptors and detrimental effects on one’s own physical health, as well as the community wellbeing. While climate change and mental health are salient areas of research, the evidence examining an association is limited. Therefore, further work should be conducted to delineate exact pathways of action to explain the mediators and mechanisms of the interaction between climate change and mental health.

Seat belt use during motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) has been shown to alter adults' intra-abdominal injury patterns, although the effect of seat belt use in pregnant women is unclear. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of seat belt use in pregnancy on injuries and outcomes after MVCs.Patients injured by MVCs were identified from the National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2014). The exclusion criteria were transfer from an outside hospital, male or unspecified sex, missing restraint data, and nonchildbearing age. Demographics, clinical/injury data, pregnancy status, seat belt use, and outcomes were collected. Study groups were dichotomized by pregnancy status with subgroup analysis by seat belt use. Univariate/multivariate analyses compared outcomes and determined predictors of seat belt use.After exclusions, 162,964 women were included, of which 680 ( 0.05). Unrestrained pregnant women were more injured (Injury Severity Score: 13 versus 7, P < 0.001), more likely to need emergent operation (14% versus 10%, P < 0.001), and had a longer hospital stay (6 versus 4 d, P = 0.012) than restrained counterparts. On multivariate analysis among pregnant women, seat belt use was associated with age ≥25 y (odds ratio: 2.033, P = 0.001). The lack of restraint use was associated with the position in the passenger seat (odds ratio: 0.521, P = 0.001).Seat belt use in pregnancy does not alter abdominal injury patterns but is associated with lower injury severity, reduced need for emergent surgery, and shortened hospital stay. Public health interventions emphasizing the importance of seat belts could be focused on younger patients and vehicle passengers to reach the high-risk pregnant subset.

Seat belt use during motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) has been shown to alter adults' intra-abdominal injury patterns, although the effect of seat belt use in pregnant women is unclear. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of seat belt use in pregnancy on injuries and outcomes after MVCs.Patients injured by MVCs were identified from the National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2014). The exclusion criteria were transfer from an outside hospital, male or unspecified sex, missing restraint data, and nonchildbearing age. Demographics, clinical/injury data, pregnancy status, seat belt use, and outcomes were collected. Study groups were dichotomized by pregnancy status with subgroup analysis by seat belt use. Univariate/multivariate analyses compared outcomes and determined predictors of seat belt use.After exclusions, 162,964 women were included, of which 680 ( 0.05). Diffenbaugh; Deeksha Rastogi;The effect of global climate change on infectious disease remains hotly debated because multiple extrinsic and intrinsic drivers interact to influence transmission dynamics in nonlinear ways. The dominant drivers of widespread pathogens, like West Nile virus, can be challenging to identify due to regional variability in vector and host ecology, with past studies producing disparate findings. Here, we used analyses at national and state scales to examine a suite of climatic and intrinsic drivers of continental-scale West Nile virus epidemics, including an empirically derived mechanistic relationship between temperature and transmission potential that accounts for spatial variability in vectors. We found that drought was the primary climatic driver of increased West Nile virus epidemics, rather than within-season or winter temperatures, or precipitation independently. Local-scale data from one region suggested drought increased epidemics via changes in mosquito infection prevalence rather than mosquito abundance. In addition, human acquired immunity following regional epidemics limited subsequent transmission in many states. We show that over the next 30 years, increased drought severity from climate change could triple West Nile virus cases, but only in regions with low human immunity. These results illustrate how changes in drought severity can alter the transmission dynamics of vector-borne diseases.

Maraviroc is an HIV entry inhibitor approved for treatment of both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant HIV strains. The present study evaluated the effects of alcohol on maraviroc pharmacokinetics and the effects of maraviroc on alcohol pharmacokinetics. Methods: Ten healthy adults completed alcohol (1 g/kg) and placebo alcohol pharmacokinetics sessions before and after 7 days of maraviroc administration. Results: Alcohol concentrations increased 12% following maraviroc. Maraviroc pharmacokinetics were unaffected by alcohol. Conclusions: Maraviroc treatment should not be interrupted if alcohol is consumed.

While the range of the virus has been cataloged growing slowly over the last 50 years, the recent explosive expansion in the Americas indicates that the full potential distribution of Zika remains uncertain2-4. Moreover, most current epidemiology relies on its similarities to dengue fever, a phylogenetically closely related disease of unknown similarity in spatial range or ecological niche5,6. Here we compile the first spatially explicit global occurrence dataset from Zika viral surveillance and serological surveys, and construct ecological niche models to test basic hypotheses about its spread and potential establishment. The hypothesis that the outbreak of cases in Mexico and North America are anomalous and outside the ecological niche of the disease, and may be linked to El Nino or similar climatic events, remains plausible at this time7. Comparison of the Zika niche against the known distribution of dengue fever suggests that Zika is more constrained by the seasonality of precipitation and diurnal temperature fluctuations, likely confining the disease to the tropics outside of pandemic scenarios. Projecting the range of the diseases in conjunction with vector species (Aedes africanus,Ae. aegypti, andAe. albopictus) that transmit the pathogens, under climate change, suggests that Zika has potential for northward expansion; but, based on current knowledge, Zika is unlikely to fill the full range its vectors occupy. With recent sexual transmission of the virus known to have occurred in the United States, we caution that our results only apply to the vector-borne aspect of the disease, and while the threat of a mosquito-carried Zika pandemic may be overstated in the media, other transmission modes of the virus may emerge and facilitate naturalization worldwide.

While the range of the virus has been cataloged growing slowly over the last 50 years, the recent explosive expansion in the Americas indicates that the full potential distribution of Zika remains uncertain2-4. Moreover, most current epidemiology relies on its similarities to dengue fever, a phylogenetically closely related disease of unknown similarity in spatial range or ecological niche5,6. Here we compile the first spatially explicit global occurrence dataset from Zika viral surveillance and serological surveys, and construct ecological niche models to test basic hypotheses about its spread and potential establishment. The hypothesis that the outbreak of cases in Mexico and North America are anomalous and outside the ecological niche of the disease, and may be linked to El Nino or similar climatic events, remains plausible at this time7. Comparison of the Zika niche against the known distribution of dengue fever suggests that Zika is more constrained by the seasonality of precipitation and diurnal temperature fluctuations, likely confining the disease to the tropics outside of pandemic scenarios. Projecting the range of the diseases in conjunction with vector species (Aedes africanus,Ae. aegypti, andAe. albopictus) that transmit the pathogens, under climate change, suggests that Zika has potential for northward expansion; but, based on current knowledge, Zika is unlikely to fill the full range its vectors occupy. With recent sexual transmission of the virus known to have occurred in the United States, we caution that our results only apply to the vector-borne aspect of the disease, and while the threat of a mosquito-carried Zika pandemic may be overstated in the media, other transmission modes of the virus may emerge and facilitate naturalization worldwide.
