description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2024 PortugalAuthors: Alonso, Luís Correia; In a rapidly evolving world, discussions about sustainability have become more common. Nevertheless, in the housing construction sector, the frequent and casual use of the term "sustainable" may have inadvertently diluted its profound meaning. Thus, the question that gives rise to this investigation is: How do companies in the residential construction sector, which label themselves as adherents to “green” and “sustainable” practices, effectively meet these requirements? Therefore, the objective of this work is to identify gaps and difficulties present on the housing construction sector, aiming to implement measures that effectively promote sustainability, aligning with the currently established Sustainable Development Goals. The flourishing construction industry and the widespread endorsement of terms such as “green” and “sustainable” have sparked a compelling investigation into the distinction between companies that lay claim to these labels and those that do not. This research originates an exploration of the confluence of the construction sector with sustainability, drawing insights from established literature and engaging in exploratory interviews with key industry stakeholders, including administrators, engineers, and architects. These exploratory interviews, allowing the interviewee to lead the interview, provided by an unbiased perspective on housing construction processes and offer guidance for a more sustainable future. Thus, it became possible to identify several problems that arise throughout the entire construction process, which can be summarized into four groups: Financial and Economic Challenges; Political and Regulatory Challenges; Operational and Planning Challenges; Knowledge and Awareness Challenges.

Inequality in income distribution is a theme which has been much debated recently, especially after the economic crisis started in 2007-2008, which is often connected to an increase in inequality. As economic theory evolved, there was a relative neglect of the theme of distribution. For the classics the distribution of the surplus was a fundamental theme, with impact not only on individual well-being, but also on economic and social sustainability. With the increasing mathematization of economics, distribution is studied as a technical question. Furthermore, there has been a paradigm shift, in which economics became no longer the science which studies the production and distribution of the surplus, but rather a science centered on scarcity. In this context, in which distribution is neglected from the point of view of economic theory, the return of the theme of inequality to economic discussion focuses essentially on its empirical measurement, through various synthetic indexes that have been developed. However, authors like Sraffa and Sen are seen as the originators of a revival of classical political economy, where distribution is an essential theme. Besides, Sen considers a multidimensional approach to inequality, considering that the latter cannot be measured only in terms of income, but also in terms of capabilities.

Microalgae have been proven efficient biological vectors for heavy metal uptake. In order to further study their biosorption potential, a strain of Desmodesmus pleiomorphus (L) was isolated from a strongly contaminated industrial site in Portugal. Under different initial Zn(2+) concentrations, metal removal by that strain reached a maximum of 360 mg Zn/g biomass after 7 days, at 30 mg Zn/l, after an initial rapid phase of uptake. Comparative studies were carried out using a strain of the same microalgal species that is commercially available (ACOI 561): when exposed to 30 mg Zn/l, it could remove only 81.8 mg Zn/g biomass. Biosorption experiments using inactivated biomass of the isolated strain reached a maximum Zn(2+) uptake of 103.7 mg/g. Metal removal at various initial pH values was studied as well; higher removal was obtained at pH 5.0. The microalga strain L, isolated from the contaminated site, exhibited a much higher removal capacity than the commercial strain, and the living biomass yielded higher levels of metal removal than its inactivated form.

The presence of actinorhizas and arbuscular mycorrhizas may reduce plant stresses caused by adverse soil conditions. A greenhouse experiment was conducted using a sediment with a high pH, resulting from the disposal of waste originated at an acetylene and polyvinylchloride factory, in which Black alder (Alnus glutinosa) seedlings were inoculated either with Glomus intraradices BEG163 (originally isolated from the same sediment), Frankia spp. or both symbionts. After a 6-month growth period, plants inoculated with both symbionts had significantly greater leaf area, shoot height and total biomass when compared with the uninoculated control, the Frankia spp. and the G. intraradices treatments alone. In dual inoculated plants the N and P leaf content was significantly increased. A defoliation experiment was performed to evaluate the stress recovery of A. glutinosa and plants inoculated with both symbionts had a faster leaf regrowth and produced greater numbers of leaves. The dual inoculation resulted in greater numbers of and larger root nodules than when inoculated with Frankia spp. alone. The length and NADH diaphorase activity of the extraradical mycelium of G. intraradices was also significantly greater when dual inoculation was performed. The inoculation with Frankia spp. alone was shown to improve A. glutinosa growth, whereas G. intraradices alone had no positive effect under these environmental conditions. However, when the two symbionts were inoculated together a synergistic effect was observed resulting in a greater benefit for the plants and for both symbionts. The relevance of these findings for the phytorestoration of anthropogenic stressed sediments with high pH is discussed.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2023 PortugalAuthors: Funder, Mira Mareike; This thesis analyzes the effect of transition risk from climate change on systemic risk in the financial sector in the Eurozone by estimating the expected capital shortfall of 237 publicly listed financial institutions in the Eurozone, conditional on a climate stress scenario, focusing on trends and concentration patterns. The capital shortfall is estimated utilizing a market-based top-down climate stress test methodology introduced by Jung et al. (2023), by first estimating time-varying Climate Betas for each financial institution through a rolling regression of the company stock returns on the returns of a Stranded Asset Portfolio, which is constructed to serve as a proxy for transition risk. Next, the variable CRISK is estimated, representing the expected capital shortfall of each financial institution under a stress scenario, represented by 50% decline in the return of the Stranded Asset Portfolio over a six-month period. The advantage of this methodology is that it estimates climate risk dynamically, and thus addresses its time-varying nature. Furthermore, it requires only publicly available data and relies on minimal assumptions (Jung et al., 2023). The findings of the analysis in this research thesis reveal a positive aggregate average CRISK of EUR 594,39 billion for the data sample, with differences in the distribution of CRISK among countries, sub-industries and individual financial institutions, and a significant upward trend in aggregate CRISK values throughout the observation period. In addition, the mean aggregate marginal CRISK, representing the difference in CRISK compared with a non-stressed scenario, is EUR 40,42 billion.

This chapter aims at presenting the legal regime on climate change, having in mind that this topic necessarily presupposes a pivotal function of International Law, but also resorts to the European Union Law and domestic law. To that end, this chapter aims providing a brief overview on the science behind climate change, so that one can better explain some legal implications under the legal regime on climate change (namely, its fundamental principles, the duty of mitigation, the legal instruments for mitigation, the adaptation policies and the avenues for States’ international responsibility or liability). Finally, this chapter considers the interaction between climate change law and human rights law, on the one hand, and the Law of the Sea, on the other hand. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The study aims to understand the significance of ESG dimensions in shaping consumer perceptions and their purchasing decisions within the luxury market. The research employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including interviews and surveys, to gather comprehensive insights from various demographic groups. The results reveal a positive correlation between ESG practices and brand reputation, with specific ESG dimensions such as Workplace and Environment holding substantial importance. However, traditional non-ESG dimensions like Products and Services remain the most critical factors for consumers when evaluating luxury brands. The findings indicate that while ESG practices enhance brand reputation, especially among younger and older demographics, non-ESG factors are still paramount in driving consumer preferences. Additionally, the study highlights the demographic variations in the perception of ESG practices. Older consumers, particularly those aged 45-54 and over 65, demonstrate a higher sensitivity to ESG factors and are more likely to adjust their purchasing behaviors based on these practices. Gender differences are also notable, with females placing greater emphasis on ESG dimensions compared to males. The dissertation concludes that luxury brands should maintain a balanced approach by prioritizing non-ESG attributes such as high-quality products and services while integrating robust ESG practices to appeal to socially conscious consumers. This strategy will not only strengthen brand loyalty but also attract a broader customer base, ensuring sustainable growth in the competitive luxury market.

However, it is dismaying to see the lack of ambitious efforts in climate treaty negotiations, which is reflected downstream in the ambiguous nature of non-binding or soft mitigation obligations. In that light, this article argues that courts can be agents of change and pressure States, cum grano salis, to take decisive action. Domestic courts may be better positioned to compel States to adopt stringent mitigation measures, but all courts (international or domestic, general or specialised) maypress for regulationorassess regulation. In both cases, courts are helpful in mapping States’ obligations under international law (including, but not exclusively, the UNFCCC legal framework).

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to a new way of thinking the business model: the Circular Economy, which is the paradigm of the system of the future, in contrast with the current linear model. The linear model is becoming threatened due to the limited availability of natural resources and the Planet's limits in terms of assimilation capacity of the pollution generated. The Circular Economy stimulates new management practices and reveals new opportunities, creating value to firms in harmony with the environment. As a source of innovation in terms of products, processes and business model, and by reducing the demand for natural resources with the recovery of waste, this new sustainability paradigm opens excellent perspectives to be considered by firms as leverage and motivation for solid and sustained growth, together with competitive advantages in a dynamic global market. The method used is the literature review. Although the concept exists in the literature, it is urgent to implement it in the real world, which would have positive economic, environmental and social impacts, such that the idea that economic growth is inevitably harmful to the environment starts being definitely an idea of the past. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
