Currently there is a growing concern about climate change resulting from increased CO2 emissions, leading to an increasing demand of buildings that are more sustainable and energy efficient. The AEC industry have been acquiring more demanding standards of sustainability and energy efficiency, requiring analysis processes to be more complex and integrated with each other. Therefore, it has become vital to implement BIM, enabling greater efficiency in the collaborative process between actors. Thus, the use of BIM can contribute to sustainability through forecasting energy consumption and their usage costs with credibility, reliability and consistency of results. The study of the benefits and barriers to the introduction of BIM in energy analysis of buildings and the analysis of the interoperability between BIM tools and specialized software for energy analysis becomes relevant, as well as the study of workflows that provide good efficiency, which will boost its correct implementation in the AEC industry Currently there is a growing concern about climate change resulting from increased CO2 emissions, leading to an increasing demand of buildings that are more sustainable and energy efficient. According to the report of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in the year of 2019, there were, once again, increases in the world’s consumption of primary energy and in the respective emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG). It thus becomes all too clear that the study of energy efficiency plays an enormously responsible role in the rationalization of these values. The dissertation that is presented addresses the execution of an energy audit to a textile industrial establishment, inserted in the textile bleaching and dyeing subsector, covered by the Intensive Energy Consumption Management System (SGCIE). According to the Portuguese regulation conditions, provided by the Decree-Law nº 68-A/2015, it is mandatory to execute an energy audit, since the targeted industrial plant, in the calendar year of 2019, presented an annual primary energy consumption of 3 454 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe). The industrial plant’s energy characterization and the identification of potential investment programs in energy systems, that would lead to an increase in the overall energy efficiency and/or a reduction in the company’s energy expenses, were the main purposes of this study. In order to carry out the energy audit mentioned, the study of a bibliographic framework became essential, addressing the national and global energy consumption, as well as the respective legislation currently in force. Then, the methodology that would be the basis for this project was adopted and this step was followed by the elaboration of a subsector notebook, referring to the business activity in which the audited industrial plant is inserted. Subsequently, fundamental steps were taken so that audit the targeted industrial plant, namely the collection of data and intervention, the field surveys and measurements and the treatment and analysis of all the obtained information. Finally, with a view to implement a continuous and efficient management process of the industrial plant’s energy consumption, and in order to achieve the required legal objectives, Rational Energy Use Measures (MURE) were also identified, emphasizing the project of a Production Unit for Self-consumption (UPAC) and the Reactivation of the Dyeing’s Hot Effluents’ Heat Recovery System, as part of the audited industrial plant’s Energy Consumption Rationalization Plan (PREn). Energy poverty affects thousands of citizens across Europe, unable to afford the energy costs for maintaining thermal comfort in buildings and dwellings in social neighbourhoods, characterized by energy inefficiency from poor constructive quality, absence or inefficiency of HVAC and DHW systems, resulting in social and economic impacts that reverberate throughout society. In this context, a lot of research was done to achieve the reduction of energy needs more effectively, as well as to increase the comfort conditions of the inhabitants, through an effective energy renovation of the poor envelops typical of social housing buildings. Increasing the constructive quality, comfort and mitigating the situation of energy poverty, so typical of this type of housing, generates large benefits to the most needy citizens and dependent on social support that consume important resources from the budgets of governments. Moreover, there is also a reduced application of methodologies and tools to support the project in the process of choosing the best constructive solutions for the renovation of buildings and housing in social neighbourhoods, since in many cases, municipalities use solutions adopted from past experiences without adapting them to the present situation. To support the renovation project, it is more effective to use some multicriteria analysis methodologies and tools, which are capable of helping to identify the most appropriate solutions and allow their assessment regarding compliance with sustainability requirements. With this dissertation, and under the ARCAS project, the MARS methodology, DesignBuilder and EnergyPlus, it was possible to identify the most effective action to mitigate energy poverty in some social housing neighbourhoods in Braga. This work evaluated 03 energy rehabilitation scenarios and identified the best solution for energy rehabilitation of buildings to be applied to social neighborhoods in Braga, resulting in increased energy efficiency and comfort of homes and at the same time contributing to mitigate energy poverty, meeting the objectives proposed in this work. The recovery of energy (heat) from a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems is now essential in the ongoing quest for thermal systems’ energy efficiency and is also frequently required by a range of national and european standards and legislation. In order to better understand and define the key factors that influence the pressure drop in the air flow in this section of the Air Handling Unit (AHU) (recover + bypass), this project was designed to study and characterize the pressure drop in detail. The utilization of airflow registers in a AHU induces a heat eecovery bypass reducing the energy consumption associated with ventilation. This dissertation was done as part of a curricular internship at EVAC - Equipa mentos de Ventilação e Ar Condicionado, S.A. To perform practical tests, EVAC provided an installation consisting of an Air Handling Unit (AHU), a duct section, four pressure transducers, and a flow nozzle. This research project intends, in a first phase, to gather the values obtained in the tests, where three plates were analyzed, which attempt to simulate the behaviour of a thermal wheel and a flow register in the installation, with different geometries for different flow rates. A spreadsheet made specifically for this purpose using the Excel program, was used for all calculations. Finally, we have analyses and correlations of these three distinct study cases, referring to the three plates, as well as a more critical assessment of the results. Use of electric energy is of basic importance for development of societies, however the excessive use of fossil fuel energy (oil, coal and gas) has caused serious social and environmental consequences. Transformations that are reflected in environmental public policies and in people's behavior change, which throughout the time has followed and demanded from their governments mitigating for issues involving the relationship of energy generation and socio-environmental impacts and conflicts, inserted, in particular, the Brazilian territory in the scenario of renewable energy production, such as wind power, especially after the energy crisis in the 2000s and the most recent in the years 2020-2021. In Brazilian wind energy sector, in turn, is being targeted for some of its negative effects on the environment and traditional communities, caused both by some poorly structured and poorly executed projects, as well as by the waste and inefficiency of its production. Thus, this thesis has as main objective to identify socio-environmental conflicts of onshore wind energy projects, parks and complexes in the Geographic Region of Guanambi, in the State of Bahia-Brazil, more precisely in the municipalities of Guanambi, Caetité and Igaporã. In addition, the research also highlights: 1) role of public policies regarding the encouragement of wind energy; 2) technical issue, from the planning stage to the design of a wind enterprise; 3) some main economic, environmental and social advantages and disadvantages of this renewable energy resource; 4) competing uses of territory between the activities carried out by the communities, usually rural, and the prospecting, implanting and operating stages of some wind energy parks and complexes, emphasizing their environmental conflicts; and 5) mitigating for socio environmental conflicts and impacts, arising from the above-mentioned stages in the municipalities analysis. For this investigation, inductive method was used, in view to a generalizable study. In addition, it identified the need for qualitative research (bibliographic and documentary), itinerant activities with application of interviews and search in newspapers and digital media. Understanding of the environmental issue and its historical evolution, characterizing the assessment of environmental impacts, it became necessary to understand the topic addressed. In this thesis, the competing uses of territory and their clashes between rural activities of traditional communities are presented, from planning to beginning of the operation of wind projects, and the problem of socio-environmental conflicts is identified through an economic, social and environmental vision. Definition of socio-environmental conflicts has had its relevance in the research due to the way they work. Thus, it was possible to notice that socio-environmental conflicts that occur are not spontaneous consequences of the processes of use and exploitation of its resources, but produced from the different forms of appropriation of the territory, which are mediated by unequal power relations. Finally, the research demonstrates mitigating and compensatory practice for socio-environmental impacts and conflicts, aiming at the interest in reconciling uses of territories for conservation with the generation of wind energy and promoting social and environmental development, through fair, equitable, direct and/or indirect access, to available environmental resources and legal use by local communities. Sustainable construction is nowadays a major concern in societies. This concern is reflected in the search for economic development allowing social balance and minimal environment impact. However, the development of all economic activities is associated with the consumption of energy, mostly of fossil origin, which impacts the environment through the release of greenhouse gases. The Construction sector in Portugal is a major consumer of these energies, both in the construction phase, and in the use phase of buildings, presenting a vast housing stock, not very energy efficient, and with high potential for thermal rehabilitation. This dissertation was developed in the context of the change made in 2021 to the national legislation on the energy certification of residential buildings (REH). After introducing the dissertation’s structure topic and the activities carried out, the procedure is to describe the regulatory documents (Decrees-Law, Dispatches and Ordinances) and their respective updates regarding the thermal behaviour of buildings in Portugal. ADENE is responsible for managing this national certification system. The goal is to understand the influence of the new Regulation and Energy Certification System, Decree Law n.º 101-D/2020, December 7th , in the estimated energy consumption of new or rehabilitated sets of buildings from the year of 2021, and to assess the demanding level of the regulatory legislation of the building’s thermic behaviour characteristics, comparing to Decree-Law n.º 118 / 2013, August 20th . For this purpose, a residential building was analysed, as a case study, in the context of the new regulations regarding its energy performance, referring to its heating and cooling needs. Two analyses were made, the first consisted of evaluating the thermal behaviour of the building by REH 2018, and the second aimed to evaluate the same behaviour, but by HAB 2020 standards. As expected, a building designed according to the previous legislation with an energy rating lower than A will have to be subjected to an energy rehabilitation intervention to be able to comply with the requirements of the current legislation, which is the case of the building used in the study. Currently, there is a great need to use renewable energy sources due to the growing possibility of scarcity of fossil resources, such as coal and oil, and also due to the environmental awareness, since renewable energies are considered clean and less harmful to the atmosphere. This means that the wind energy industry has to be at the forefront of available resources, which is the main motivation for the development of this work. The objective of this work was to study small horizontal axis wind turbines and their respective aerodynamics. Subsequently, a rotor was designed based on the blade element and moment theory (BEMT), analytically (Excel spreadsheet) and using the open source calculation software, Qblade. In order to fulfill these objectives, the project began with a literature review on the phenomenon of wind, evolution of wind turbines and more specifically on the aerodynamics associated with them. Subsequently, under some design conditions, a wing profile for the rotor was selected, its behavior was analyzed and using the blade element and moment theory (BEMT) and an Excel spreadsheet, it was possible to obtain the distribution of the rope and the angle of twist for the rotor blades. Then, through the use of open source calculation software, the Qblade, which uses the inviscid model (potential flow) combined with corrections inherent to the fluid viscosity (wall laws), it was possible to obtain a new distribution of the chord and the angle of torsion, the performance of the rotor for various wind speeds and rotation (wind turbine power curve) and finally an estimate of the annual energy production was also obtained (this production was later compared with wind data obtained by the Department of DEM – based on normalized Weibull distributions). The application of BEMT theory allowed to obtain an ideal blade for the selected design conditions. Since in the software compared to the spreadsheet there is mainly a big difference regarding torsion angles, relative to the rope the values are quite similar. Regarding the annual energy production, the values are also similar.

With the growing interest in issues of an environmental nature, in particular on renewable energies, both by the public and by legislators, it is increasingly necessary that there is more economic research in this area. This dissertation presents a contribution to the scientific knowledge of energy economics, aiming to study the economic impact of increased consumption of renewable energy in the European Union, quantifying it through an econometric panel data model with data referring to the years between 2004 and 2019. It is intended to contribute to greater knowledge on the subject and thus enabling a more informed analysis of the various environmental policies in force. The econometric model used in this dissertation comes from the author Inglesi-Lotz (2015), who carried out a study for OECD countries between 1990 and 2010. This dissertation can be considered as an update of this work to a different reality. Four submodels were developed that aim to show the relationship between variations in renewable energy consumption, gross capital formation, number of employees, and R&D expenditure, variations in GDP and GDPpc, that is, what is the effect of those variables on the growth of countries. A fifth model was also estimated, which inverts the first, and explains the consumption of renewable energy through the other variables. It can be concluded from the results obtained that the increase in the consumption of renewable energy had a positive impact on the economic growth of the European Union, measured by GDP, between 2004 and 2019. Therefore, not only does the energy transition to greener energy consumption brings environmental benefits, it has also been a positive contributor to improving economic conditions. The fashion industry is the second largest industrial polluter after aviation, accounting for up to 10 % of global pollution. Yet, despite this widely publicized environmental impact, the industry continues to grow, in part due to the rise of fast fashion, which relies on cheap labor, overconsumption and short lived clothing. That being said, it is essential that there is a slowdown in production, back to slow fashion, the introduction of sustainable practices throughout the supply chain and a change in consumer behavior. This dissertation contributed to improving Sonae Fashion's sustainability, where the main objective was to support the definition of the improvement strategy and the development of a business model for responsible plastic and denim. In relation to denim from the Salsa brand, it was necessary to analyze the traceability of denim (environmental footprint, logistics, geography), study sustainable and responsible denim benchmarks, and develop a plan of more sustainable alternatives. Regarding plastics of the MO, Zippy and Salsa brands, it was necessary to analyze all the plastic from the MO, Zippy and Salsa stores from its arrival at the store to its departure, quantify, typify and register the types of plastics, study alternatives to reduce the consumption and support the definition of a strategy and business model for the sustainability, circularity and recycling of plastic. It was concluded, in relation to denim, that 1 pair of 100 % cotton jeans consumes 2 096 L of water, 760 g of cotton, 3,31 g of chemical solutions, 3,36 g of sodium hypochlorite and 0,4 kg of pumice stone, needs an area of 4,81 m2 , and has a carbon footprint of about 6,01 kg. Through these results, it was possible to develop a business model to make denim more environmentally responsible, opting, for example, for the use of hemp as a raw material, for the implementation of finishing technologies with less consumption of water and chemicals and for the awareness of the consumers regardind their impacts. In plastics, after quantifying and typifying the plastic that reaches the final consumer at MO and Zippy stores, it was possible to conclude that in 2019 the most consumed was LDPE, around 74 tons, and the second most consumed was PVC, about 39 tons. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the plastic generated in the MO, Zippy and Salsa stores is correctly treated, being collected and sent for recycling. With these results, it was possible to develop a business model for plastic through the elimination, replacement and reuse of packaging.

In view of the climate changes experienced in the past few decades, a debate has arisen concerning its causes and consequences. Climate change is related, for the most part, with human activity. Its consequences are extremely serious and affect many aspects of everyday life. The power plants which produce the necessary energy for household electricty and heating contribute to this effect through the emission of greenhouse gases. The household sector is the third largest consumer of energy, and electricty emerges as its main power source in Portugal. Considering that all reductions of greenhouse emissions contribute to the decelaration of global warming, we have chosen to focus on the reduction of household electricity consumption. The main objective of this dissertation is the identification of the drivers of household electricity consumption within Portugal’s NUTS II, in the 2000 to 2020 time frame. The employed methodology follows an econometric approach, with recourse to a panel database. Empirical results indicate that the price of electricity, human capital, material deprivation and poverty risk have a negative effect on household electricity consumption. Nevertheless, disponsable income of households, in spite of propelling this consumption, together with the price of electricity and human capital, has not been demonstrated to have a clear effect on electrical household consumption, as well as the climate conditions. On the other hand, other variables, such as long-term unemployment or periods of recession, seem to have no influence on consumption whatsoever. These results suggest that policies based on information campaigns and incentives programs are the most operative means to aid in combatting climate change.
