Therefore, it is necessary to develop cost-effective practices to reduce the vulnerability of olive crops to the adverse impacts of environmental stresses. Rainfed olive trees were sprayed with zeolites, natural crystalline aluminosilicates, and its effects on photosynthetic activity, phenolic composition, antioxidant activity, leaf minerais concentrations, plant growth, yield, and olive oil quality were assessed. Zeolites application enhanced photosynthetic activity, as well the concentrations of N, Mg, Cu, Zn and Mn in leaves, and changed the secondary metabolism, with decrease oftotal phenols, ortho-diphenols and total antioxidant activity, signs of lower oxidative stress. As consequence, zeolites boosted plant growth, crop yield, and size and weight of fruits. The foliar spray did not significantly affect the oil quality indices free acidity, peroxide value and Km and K270 coefficients. This study strongly suggests that folial' zeolites might be an effective strategy to mitigate the adverse environmental conditions. Participaram no estudo 57 empresas. The purpose of this master's dissertation is to develop an assessment of the consideration of environmental aspects in the efficiency of the food supply chain performance. For reasons of economic importance, environmental impact and data availability, the pigmeat supply chain was chosen, where problem areas and solutions for improving the environmental aspects of the operations are identified, for the benefit of a sustainable development. In order to understand the effect of environmental care on supply chains, the aim of this paper is to contribute to the question of whether environmentally conscious food supply chains are more efficient. For the sake of empirically study the constructs mentioned above, a quantitative approach was used through a questionnaire directed to supermarkets and butchers that operate in the Portuguese municipalities of Barcelos, Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde. Fifty-seven companies participated in the study. The results support the hypothesis that supply chains with environmental concerns are more efficient, showing the effect that green practices on water and waste have on reducing costs. Furthermore, it is concluded that the seniority of organizations and the effective management of the relationship with costumers make organizations more efficient. In this way, this investigation became relevant for a more efficient comprehension about the economic, social and ambiental impact caused by the pork supply chain and allows for the identification of the problematic areas, which help in the implementation of some changes in supply chain operations and to bring improvements in the industry for sustainable development. Among the expected impacts of climate change are the increased mean sea level rise and the changes in regional rainfall patterns. Estuaries are among the most vulnerable areas to these effects, so it is necessary to understand their impacts to better plan mitigation actions and increase resilience. Numerical modeling was applied in this work, using the Delft3D software, to simulate the effects of saline intrusion in the Minho River estuary under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios adopted by the IPCC. In this case, the river`s flow is regulated by several dams, and the flow that reaches the estuary is only indirectly influenced by changes in rainfall patterns. Thus, the variation of river flows was studied in order to support future planning actions and revision of the dam discharges rules that should be followed to control salt intrusion. An increase in salt intrusion was observed at the upstream estuary with an increase in the sea level and the decrease in river flows reaching, in the worst case, the extension of 28.9 km from the estuarine mouth, which can bring several impacts to the different water uses in the region. The extent of salt intrusion showed a greater dependence on river flows variations under drought conditions. Thus, in the most critical cases, that is, with greater salt intrusion, the river flow proved to be the most important factor, and its control is an efficient tool to limit the extent of salt intrusion in the estuary. This dissertation addresses food waste at the consumer level. This global challenge, estimated at 89 million tons per year, has environmental, social and economic impacts. Although all stages of the food supply chain contribute to the total waste values, the last two, food services and consumption, are the main responsible. For this reason, using a qualitative investigation, through semi-structured interviews with end consumers, it was considered of high importance to identify their motivations, practices, and limitations, in relation to food waste, and possible opportunities to combat it. This study demonstrated that financial and social factors have an influence on consumers' intention to reduce the waste they create. However, several practices were identified, common among the respondents, which caused food waste, essentially due to a lack of skills and knowledge, in addition to having verified that the intention to reduce food waste was often preceded by different competing priorities.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2022 PortugalAuthors: Silva, Sofia Carvalho Moreira da;O desperdício alimentar é um problema à escala mundial com consequências negativas graves a nível económico, social e ambiental. Food waste is a worldwide problem with severe economic, social, and environmental consequences. Like many other sustainable-related topics, food waste has been a subject of increasing attention and concern over the last years. Therefore, new strategies and innovations that aim to combat and minimize the impacts of food waste have emerged, for instance, through new business models. Business models that focus on reducing food waste are categorized as sustainable business models and, consequently, face challenges beyond those that are common to any type of business. The purpose of this study was to explore those challenges using a qualitative methodology. This investigation was accomplished through interviews done to companies that fit the characteristics of those business models and a survey assigned to Portuguese consumers to understand their behavior on this subject and their use of the services offered by the organizations that were interviewed. Throughout the work, the main challenges were identified, mainly related to the lack of receptivity of consumers to this type of business as well as the lack of government support for their development. Some limitations to this study were also detected, which can be seen as opportunities for future research work.

Food waste is a current and urgent issue, especially in a world facing not only the scourge of hunger and inequality, but also the problem of climate change. In this context, sustainable business models, which aim to combat food waste, become crucial for the construction of a fairer, greener, and more responsible society. The main objective of this research is to identify the main barriers and drivers experienced in the establishment of these business models. It is a mostly qualitative study, descriptive in nature. The main drivers are the small number of companies operating in this market allied to the growing interest and receptivity of consumers, motivated by both environmental and economic reasons. Regarding the challenges, they are mainly related to the numerous logistical difficulties experienced by most businesses, regardless of the stage of the supply chain where they are located. In the future, because of §the repercussions of the current economic situation combined with an increase in environmental and food literacy, it is estimated that there will be a greater adoption of these business models by Portuguese consumers. As a result of this growing demand, we expect the emergence of more and more initiatives focused on the circular economy and the sustainability of the planet, to mitigate this global problem.

Anthropogenic actions produce planetary impacts and accelerate global warming. Municipalities around the world have been suffering from heat waves, prolonged droughts, torrential rains, tornadoes, cyclones, hurricanes, among others, which are increasingly recurrent. The objective of this essay is to show that cities have a strategic role, both in facing these atmospheric changes that we are experiencing, as well as in the decision-making power for coping actions. For this, we use the concept of geographic scale as a methodology, as a conceptual tool to articulate the different conflicting and complex levels of the current climate crisis. Identifying urban singularities, through a closer approximation of people's spatial reality, using this concept, is necessary to mitigate the social consequences of the process. The results elucidated that cities have unique characteristics to generate adaptations to these current climate changes, through a closer and more effective look at the local scale.

Moreira; Ana Rita Silva; Joana Grácio; This manual is one of the outcomes of the SAL - Environmental Seed project, an environmental awareness pilot project under the ENEA 2020 Environmental Education Strategy, led by Food4Sustainability in partnership with Idanha-a-Nova Municipality. Its main objective is to raise awareness and promote healthy and sustainable food consumption habits in the population, by sharing knowledge about the importance of more sustainable production and consumption practices in the school community. Through awareness-raising and active participation, from the place of production to the place of consumption, the aim is to encourage more informed choices and, consequently, to promote changes in consumption habits and more sustainable behaviour. Thus, the 6th, 8th and 9th year classes of the José Silvestre Ribeiro Group of Schools in Idanha-a-Nova were invited to participate in the preparation of this Good Practices Manual "Hands in the Garden - the path to a more sustainable diet" ("Mãos na Horta - O Caminho para uma alimentação mais sustentável"), integrated in the themes of their Curricular Projects.
