The Paris Agreement is a milestone in the recognition of the urgency of the transition to a low-carbon global economy. On the other hand, the transport sector (almost 25% of global emissions of CO2) lacks the due focus by governments and international organizations. This article argues that advanced biofuels – first-generation sugarcane ethanol (E1G) and second-generation or cellulosic ethanol (E2G) – are the fastest and most compatible solution. In addition, the E2G, produced from waste, deconstructs the misplaced dichotomy "food versus biofuels." However, to overcome the challenges of scaling the E2G, it is important to increase international cooperation. For that reason, Brazil, under the leadership of Itamaraty, has succeeded in creating the Biofuturo platform, an international alliance of 20 countries that seeks to promote the development of advanced biofuels.
