Abstract

The increase in industrial activity, particularly in the textile sector, increasingly requires the implementation of technologically innovative and more sustainable processes. The conventional dyeing process uses synthetic dyes and involves the consumption of many resources, namely water and energy, in addition to being highly harmful to living organisms. The awareness of the environmental impact and toxicity inherent to this process, as well as the increased demand for technical textiles, have led to a growing interest in the development of more ecological dyes and, in parallel, to the development of more sustainable functional agents. In this context, this project aims to evaluate the potential of propolis as a functional agent in the treatment of 100% cotton knits. In addition to colouring properties, this natural product produced by bees and deposited in hives, has antioxidant and antibacterial properties of great interest, thus creating an ecological and innovative alternative to the colouring and functionalization of textiles. The extraction of bioactive compounds from propolis was carried out through an ethanol extraction, after which a suitable solution was prepared for the colouring of the textile mesh by the depletion technology. In order to increase the surface reactivity and improve the affinity to propolis, mesh pretreatments were carried out with potassium alum, tannic acid, atmospheric plasma (oxygen) and chitosan. The characterization of the coloured and functionalized test pieces involved the evaluation of colour and of the antioxidant and antibacterial activities, before and after several washing cycles. In the colour analysis it was found that, in general, the colour differences increased with the increase of washing cycles. The evaluation of antioxidant activity, by ABTS, allowed to confirm that the biocoloration solution gave the cotton fabric a reduction capacity greater than 90%. The functionalization of cotton with potassium alum and with the solution of biocoloration allowed to maintain this percentage, even after 5 washing cycles. Antibacterial analysis revealed an inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus growth for the functionalized cotton with only the biocoloration solution. The sample under study showed a decrease in the inhibitory action with washing, but the use of potassium alum allows to retain the antibacterial property after 5 washing cycles.
