Abstract

For 2013, the energy certification system, introduced an update to the reference meteorological years, i.e., the base values used for forecasting the production of solar thermal or photovoltaic energy and thermal simulation of buildings. There is a special interest in optimizing these systems, since Portugal has high insolation levels and the sector has benefited from technological developments that have allowed to increase its efficiency. The main objective of this dissertation is the analysis of the different methods of determination of the meteorological years of reference, applied to the municipality of Braga. In this way, a study was carried out on the fundamental concepts related to solar geometry, and the best methods for data processing were identified in order to construct an analysis tool for the performance of prediction studies. Thus, a calculation tool was developed, in Excel, to compare the radiation data between the selected climatic bases. Different solar follow-up configurations were considered: biaxial system, polar axis system, vertical axis tilt system equal to the local latitude, horizontal axis systems and fixed system. Additionally, the impact of updating the meteorological years between the developed tool and a commercial program, the PVsyst, was compared to the same conditions, validating the consistency of the developed tool. The update of the database resulted in a significant increase in the total solar incidence. It was concluded that the segments of one axis follow-up: polar and vertical present values very close to the biaxial system, which maximizes the incidence in the panel. Although, it corresponds to the most complex installation. The application of simple atmospheric models to estimate/predict the total radiation incidence in fixed panels presents more conservative values, when compared to the more complex models.
