Abstract

La végétation tropicale de l'Afrique est caractérisée par des niveaux élevés de diversité des espèces, mais subit d'importants changements en réponse au changement climatique en cours et aux pressions anthropiques croissantes. Bien que notre connaissance des modèles de répartition des espèces végétales dans les tropiques africains se soit améliorée au fil des ans, elle reste limitée. Nous présentons ici RAINBIO, une méga-base de données complète unique d'enregistrements géoréférencés pour les plantes vasculaires en Afrique tropicale continentale. L'objectif géographique de la base de données est la région au sud du Sahel et au nord de l'Afrique australe, et la majorité des données proviennent des régions forestières tropicales. RAINBIO est une compilation de 13 ensembles de données accessibles au public ou personnels. De nombreux contrôles approfondis de la qualité des données, automatiques et manuels via plusieurs experts de la flore africaine, ont été entrepris pour le géoréférencement, la normalisation des noms taxonomiques et l'identification et la fusion des enregistrements en double. Les données RAINBIO résultantes permettent l'exploration et l'extraction de données de distribution pour 25 356 espèces de plantes vasculaires tropicales africaines indigènes, ce qui représente environ 89 % de toutes les espèces végétales connues dans la zone d'intérêt. Des informations sur les habitudes sont également fournies pour 91 % de ces espèces.

La vegetación tropical de África se caracteriza por altos niveles de diversidad de especies, pero está experimentando cambios importantes en respuesta al cambio climático en curso y al aumento de las presiones antropogénicas. Aunque nuestro conocimiento de los patrones de distribución de las especies de plantas en los trópicos africanos ha ido mejorando a lo largo de los años, sigue siendo limitado. Aquí presentamos RAINBIO, una mega base de datos integral única de registros georreferenciados para plantas vasculares en el África tropical continental. El enfoque geográfico de la base de datos es la región al sur del Sahel y el norte de África meridional, y la mayoría de los datos provienen de regiones de bosques tropicales. RAINBIO es una compilación de 13 conjuntos de datos disponibles públicamente o personales. Se realizaron numerosos controles de calidad de datos en profundidad, automáticos y manuales a través de varios expertos en flora africana, para la georreferenciación, la estandarización de nombres taxonómicos y la identificación y fusión de registros duplicados. Los datos de RAINBIO resultantes permiten la exploración y extracción de datos de distribución para 25 356 especies de plantas vasculares tropicales africanas nativas, lo que representa aproximadamente el 89% de todas las especies de plantas conocidas en el área de interés. También se proporciona información de hábitos para el 91% de estas especies.

The tropical vegetation of Africa is characterized by high levels of species diversity but is undergoing important shifts in response to ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressures. Although our knowledge of plant species distribution patterns in the African tropics has been improving over the years, it remains limited. Here we present RAINBIO, a unique comprehensive mega-database of georeferenced records for vascular plants in continental tropical Africa. The geographic focus of the database is the region south of the Sahel and north of Southern Africa, and the majority of data originate from tropical forest regions. RAINBIO is a compilation of 13 datasets either publicly available or personal ones. Numerous in depth data quality checks, automatic and manual via several African flora experts, were undertaken for georeferencing, standardization of taxonomic names and identification and merging of duplicated records. The resulting RAINBIO data allows exploration and extraction of distribution data for 25,356 native tropical African vascular plant species, which represents ca. 89% of all known plant species in the area of interest. Habit information is also provided for 91% of these species.
