Abstract

Because of different sources of supply of natural gas for Antioquia and dynamics of the fuel market for Colombia regarding the importation of such energy and constant concern of the availability and quality of gaseous fuel; It is necessary to determine the operating limits of interchangeability with gases of diferent sources, in such a way that the physical properties of the combustion equipment already installed do not be affected and a efficient and safe flow of fuel is assured. For this reason, mixtures of natural gas received in Antioquia between 2011 – 2015 were studied. Representative mixtures according to the classification of high, medium and low energy content were obtained by means of descriptive statistics applied. Combustion properties related with interchangeability were calculated and then they were used in a numerical simulation using the CHEMKIN PRO software with GRIMECH 3.0 mechanism. Laminar deflagration velocity was calculated numerically and these results were compared with those obtained in the experimental test for the same mixtures of natural gas by Schlieren. Results allowed application of interchangeability indexes and experimental validation of the combustion instabilities (flashback and Blowout). It was found that the interchangeability between these gases does not exceed 5.5% over the base gas and is not necessary to adjust physically the designs of combustion equipment operating in the region of Antioquia
