Prevalence of malnutrition among school children in Ejisu-Juaben District, Ashanti region in Ghana.

Abstract

A total of 886 primary school children, aged 5 to 9 years, were studied in Ejisu-Juaben district in Ashanti region (Ghana), from June 1 to November 23, 1990, to assess the prevalence of wasting and stunting in the district. Only children enrolled in the first year of the primary school in selected villages were studied. There were 450 males (50.8%) and 436 females (49.2%). The prevalence of wasting and stunting were 44.3% and 54.9% respectively with a slight predominance among females. The high prevalence of protein-energy-malnutrition among school children calls for urgent actions to improve the health status of children in Ghana.
