Research on digital twins (DTs) in the power system field has mainly focused on implementing DTs for specific resources, while few studies on electric vehicle (EV)-based DT implementation have considered integration and interoperability between systems. This study introduces a DT-based EV system operation framework to address the aforementioned research gap. The framework implements individual EVs, charging stations, and charging station operators (CPOs) as DTs, enabling integrated operation with the power grid. The DT-based EV agent supports independent decision-making on power service participation by considering location information, distance, charging amount, spare time, and incentives. In addition, the CPO can establish an optimal incentive strategy to induce EV users to participate in grid power services. The proposed DT systems map information between EVs, charging stations, and the grid, enabling analysis and verification of the impact of participants on charging station operation, grid stability, and economic efficiency in an independent environment. The effectiveness and usability of the proposed framework were verified through a case study on an incentive-based demand response program.

This study covers the structural optimization of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) that can operate reliably for long periods of time in marine environments, as well as simulation analysis to evaluate their fatigue and strain resistance. Due to the nature of the marine environment, strong wind speeds and constant wave loads are applied, and VAWTs are likely to suffer from fatigue build-up and deformation problems in the long term. In this study, detailed numerical simulations were performed using ANSYS software (2024 R2) to analyze the effects of different airfoil shapes, material choices, tip speed ratios (TSRs), and foundation types on the turbine’s stress distribution and fatigue resistance. The results showed that NACA 0030 airfoil, composite steel, and single-pile foundation performed best under TSR 1.8 conditions, with the potential to reduce strain by approximately 30% and fatigue damage by approximately 25% compared to conventional structures. With this optimized combination, it was found that maintenance costs could be significantly reduced while maintaining structural stability at sea. These results could make an important contribution to the economical and durable design of VAWTs in the future.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are expected to play an important role in the future and thus have improved significantly over the past years. Hydrogen fuel cell motorcycles with a small container for compressed hydrogen gas have been developed in Japan along with related regulations. As a result, national regulations have been established in Japan after discussions with Japanese motorcycle companies, stakeholders, and experts. The concept of Japanese regulations was proposed internationally, and a new international regulation on hydrogen-fueled motorcycles incorporating compressed hydrogen storage systems based on this concept are also established as United Nations Regulation No. 146. In this paper, several technical regulations on hydrogen safety specific to fuel cell motorcycles incorporating compressed hydrogen storage systems are summarized. The unique characteristics of these motorcycles, e.g., small body, light weight, and tendency to overturn easily, are considered in these regulations.

The increasing burden on shipowners and shipping companies due to environmental regulations imposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has led to the adoption of various compliance strategies, including the use of low-sulfur fuel, installation of scrubbers, and the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as an alternative fuel. LNG is particularly prevalent in dual-fuel propulsion ships, with the IMO Type C tank being the most commonly used storage facility. The structure of the IMO Type C tank comprises a pressure vessel and supporting saddles, which can be integrated or separate systems. Despite being manufactured within specified tolerances, welding-induced deformation of the tank and saddle is inevitable since the saddle is welded directly onto the hull. In integrated tank–saddle systems, this deformation can lead to cracks in the epoxy resin, which has lower strength and stiffness, as well as burn damage to the resin and wooden blocks from welding heat. In separate tank–saddle systems, installation difficulties can arise due to interference between the fuel tank system and adjacent structures, such as insulation or the fuel preparation room (FPR), resulting from saddle deformation caused by welding. This study analyzes the sensitivity of all weld lines involved in saddle installation using the direct inherent strain (DIS) method. Based on this analysis, the initial welding deformations are evaluated in relation to the welding direction and sequence. Finally, an optimized method for saddle installation is proposed to minimize deformation.

In Southeast Asian cities, it is common for logistic companies to operate a heterogeneous fleet of delivery vehicles with motorcycles being the preferred vehicle to handle the final phase of delivery. In such scenarios, heterogeneous fleet vehicle routing problem (HFVRP) is generally applied to plan an optimal delivery. However, in many downtown cores of large and rapidly developing Southeast Asian cities, HFVRP is neither viable nor reliable because of road usage restrictions. The purpose of this article is to develop and test a different approach that accurately takes these restrictions into account and provides viable and more sustainable results. Restrictions in this paper refer to situations of urban areas in Vietnam where (i) certain vehicle types are prohibited in specified areas or where narrow alleyways limit the utilization of vehicles that exceed the road capacity and (ii) certain roads are exclusive to certain vehicle types. In networks, limited access and exclusive lanes are represented as links, or arcs, exclusive to one or another. Taking these limitations into consideration, we have developed a unique model, which we have termed Vehicle Routing Problem with Exclusive Links (VRP-EL). The model was validated and tested for its performance on scenarios with varying ratios of exclusive links. Scenarios up to 500 customers were tested on a meta-heuristic algorithm, simulated annealing. VRP-EL produces realistic outcomes. Limiting certain links to be selected according to vehicle types increases overall travel distance. However, this increase outweighs the cost of re-planning and rerouting had they not been constrained initially. The reduction in traveling distance leads to fossil fuel reduction for the overall system. The estimation of reduced carbon emissions through applying the proposed model is presented. Considering the severe traffic congestion and carbon emissions caused by motorcycles in Vietnam, the proposed model leads to a sustainable road environment.

In Southeast Asian cities, it is common for logistic companies to operate a heterogeneous fleet of delivery vehicles with motorcycles being the preferred vehicle to handle the final phase of delivery. In such scenarios, heterogeneous fleet vehicle routing problem (HFVRP) is generally applied to plan an optimal delivery. However, in many downtown cores of large and rapidly developing Southeast Asian cities, HFVRP is neither viable nor reliable because of road usage restrictions. The purpose of this article is to develop and test a different approach that accurately takes these restrictions into account and provides viable and more sustainable results. Restrictions in this paper refer to situations of urban areas in Vietnam where (i) certain vehicle types are prohibited in specified areas or where narrow alleyways limit the utilization of vehicles that exceed the road capacity and (ii) certain roads are exclusive to certain vehicle types. In networks, limited access and exclusive lanes are represented as links, or arcs, exclusive to one or another. Taking these limitations into consideration, we have developed a unique model, which we have termed Vehicle Routing Problem with Exclusive Links (VRP-EL). The model was validated and tested for its performance on scenarios with varying ratios of exclusive links. Scenarios up to 500 customers were tested on a meta-heuristic algorithm, simulated annealing. VRP-EL produces realistic outcomes. Limiting certain links to be selected according to vehicle types increases overall travel distance. However, this increase outweighs the cost of re-planning and rerouting had they not been constrained initially. The reduction in traveling distance leads to fossil fuel reduction for the overall system. The estimation of reduced carbon emissions through applying the proposed model is presented. Considering the severe traffic congestion and carbon emissions caused by motorcycles in Vietnam, the proposed model leads to a sustainable road environment.

However, current commitments of global societies are not sufficient, party owing to the lack of cost-effective decarbonization measures. The SolarEV City concept is proposed for cost-effective urban decarbonization combining rooftop PV with EV through bi-directional charging in a city scale. In this study, we conducted techno-economic analyses to test the concept in Paris and Ile-de-France. PV+EV systems are found to add value to rooftop PV systems raising selfconsumption and self-sufficiency, when the roof coverage by PV is reached to 50-60% for Paris and 20-30% for Ile-de-France, allowing to bypass expensive stand-alone battery storage. The system allows CO2 emissions reduction through accelerated development of EV.

Since recent marine application of fuel cell systems has been due largely limited to small-sized ships, this paper was aimed to investigate the technical applicability of molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) for medium and large-sized ships, using a 180 kW class hybrid test bed with combined power sources: A 100 kW MCFC, a 30 kW battery and a 50 kW diesel generator. This study focused primarily on determining whether the combined system designed in consideration of actual marine power system configuration could function properly. A case study was conducted with a 5500 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) container vessel. The operation profile was collected and analyzed in order to develop electric load scenarios applicable to the power system. Throughout the experiment, we evaluated the power quality of the voltage and frequency in the process of synchronization and de-synchronization across the power sources. Therefore, research results revealed that power quality continued to be excellent. This outcome provides insight into the technical reliability of MCFC application on large marine vessels.

Many mathematical models have been proposed to estimate vertical tidal current profiles. However, as previous studies have shown that tidal current energy sites have different characteristics in their vertical tidal current profiles, it is necessary to estimate the profiles from field-measured data for practical purposes. In this study, we measured layered tidal currents over two months using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) to analyze the characteristics of vertical tidal current profiles at the Jangjuk Strait, a candidate site for tidal current energy. As a result, the power law parameter α and bed roughness β were estimated as 4.51–12.41 and 0.38–0.42, respectively. Additionally, the maximum roughness length representing seabed roughness in the logarithmic profile was estimated as 0.221 m, and the estimated friction velocity was 0.038–0.194 m/s. Furthermore, a high correlation was observed between the depth-averaged tidal current velocity and friction velocities at all sites during flood and ebb tide conditions. A high correlation was also found between the bed roughness, roughness length, and power law exponent at relatively deeper sites. Tidal current energy sites display distinct characteristics compared to other sea areas. Therefore, it is essential to account for field conditions when conducting numerical modeling and design.

Furthermore, a high correlation was observed between the depth-averaged tidal current velocity and friction velocities at all sites during flood and ebb tide conditions. A high correlation was also found between the bed roughness, roughness length, and power law exponent at relatively deeper sites. Tidal current energy sites display distinct characteristics compared to other sea areas. Therefore, it is essential to account for field conditions when conducting numerical modeling and design.

The desiccation tolerance of the intertidal seagrass Zostera japonica has been demonstrated in a number of studies; however, the factors limiting expansion of intertidal seagrass species into subtidal zones remain controversial. We transplanted Z. japonica shoots from the intermediate intertidal zone into the plots with and without Z. marina shoots in both the lower intertidal and shallow subtidal zones to investigate the factors controlling Z. japonica growth in these zones. Daily photon flux density at the Z. japonica canopy level was attenuated by both water depth and coexisting Z. marina shoots but more strongly by Z. marina shoots than water depth in the transplant plots. The shoot density and biomass of Z. japonica transplants were significantly lower in transplant plots in the subtidal zone than in the lower intertidal zone. Although the photon flux density was significantly lower in transplant plots containing Z. marina shoots, the growth of Z. japonica transplants did not differ significantly between plots with and those without Z. marina shoots. Z. japonica transplants exhibited photoacclimatory responses such as increased shoot height and chlorophyll content under the lower-light conditions, offsetting the reduced light availability so that no significant differences in transplant growth occurred between plots with and those without Z. marina shoots. As the growth of Z. japonica transplants decreased significantly in the subtidal zone, the interactive effects of environmental stresses associated with tidal inundation and reduced light availability may restrict penetration of the intertidal seagrass Z. japonica into the subtidal zone. The persistence of high photosynthetic performance after air exposure and a regular arrangement of the densely overlapped leaves atop wet sediments may be desiccation tolerance mechanisms for Z. japonica in the intertidal zone.

Research on digital twins (DTs) in the power system field has mainly focused on implementing DTs for specific resources, while few studies on electric vehicle (EV)-based DT implementation have considered integration and interoperability between systems. This study introduces a DT-based EV system operation framework to address the aforementioned research gap. The framework implements individual EVs, charging stations, and charging station operators (CPOs) as DTs, enabling integrated operation with the power grid. The DT-based EV agent supports independent decision-making on power service participation by considering location information, distance, charging amount, spare time, and incentives. In addition, the CPO can establish an optimal incentive strategy to induce EV users to participate in grid power services. The proposed DT systems map information between EVs, charging stations, and the grid, enabling analysis and verification of the impact of participants on charging station operation, grid stability, and economic efficiency in an independent environment. The effectiveness and usability of the proposed framework were verified through a case study on an incentive-based demand response program.

This study covers the structural optimization of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) that can operate reliably for long periods of time in marine environments, as well as simulation analysis to evaluate their fatigue and strain resistance. Due to the nature of the marine environment, strong wind speeds and constant wave loads are applied, and VAWTs are likely to suffer from fatigue build-up and deformation problems in the long term. In this study, detailed numerical simulations were performed using ANSYS software (2024 R2) to analyze the effects of different airfoil shapes, material choices, tip speed ratios (TSRs), and foundation types on the turbine’s stress distribution and fatigue resistance. The results showed that NACA 0030 airfoil, composite steel, and single-pile foundation performed best under TSR 1.8 conditions, with the potential to reduce strain by approximately 30% and fatigue damage by approximately 25% compared to conventional structures. With this optimized combination, it was found that maintenance costs could be significantly reduced while maintaining structural stability at sea. These results could make an important contribution to the economical and durable design of VAWTs in the future.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are expected to play an important role in the future and thus have improved significantly over the past years. Hydrogen fuel cell motorcycles with a small container for compressed hydrogen gas have been developed in Japan along with related regulations. As a result, national regulations have been established in Japan after discussions with Japanese motorcycle companies, stakeholders, and experts. The concept of Japanese regulations was proposed internationally, and a new international regulation on hydrogen-fueled motorcycles incorporating compressed hydrogen storage systems based on this concept are also established as United Nations Regulation No. 146. In this paper, several technical regulations on hydrogen safety specific to fuel cell motorcycles incorporating compressed hydrogen storage systems are summarized. The unique characteristics of these motorcycles, e.g., small body, light weight, and tendency to overturn easily, are considered in these regulations.

The increasing burden on shipowners and shipping companies due to environmental regulations imposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has led to the adoption of various compliance strategies, including the use of low-sulfur fuel, installation of scrubbers, and the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as an alternative fuel. LNG is particularly prevalent in dual-fuel propulsion ships, with the IMO Type C tank being the most commonly used storage facility. The structure of the IMO Type C tank comprises a pressure vessel and supporting saddles, which can be integrated or separate systems. Despite being manufactured within specified tolerances, welding-induced deformation of the tank and saddle is inevitable since the saddle is welded directly onto the hull. In integrated tank–saddle systems, this deformation can lead to cracks in the epoxy resin, which has lower strength and stiffness, as well as burn damage to the resin and wooden blocks from welding heat. In separate tank–saddle systems, installation difficulties can arise due to interference between the fuel tank system and adjacent structures, such as insulation or the fuel preparation room (FPR), resulting from saddle deformation caused by welding. This study analyzes the sensitivity of all weld lines involved in saddle installation using the direct inherent strain (DIS) method. Based on this analysis, the initial welding deformations are evaluated in relation to the welding direction and sequence. Finally, an optimized method for saddle installation is proposed to minimize deformation.

In Southeast Asian cities, it is common for logistic companies to operate a heterogeneous fleet of delivery vehicles with motorcycles being the preferred vehicle to handle the final phase of delivery. In such scenarios, heterogeneous fleet vehicle routing problem (HFVRP) is generally applied to plan an optimal delivery. However, in many downtown cores of large and rapidly developing Southeast Asian cities, HFVRP is neither viable nor reliable because of road usage restrictions. The purpose of this article is to develop and test a different approach that accurately takes these restrictions into account and provides viable and more sustainable results. Restrictions in this paper refer to situations of urban areas in Vietnam where (i) certain vehicle types are prohibited in specified areas or where narrow alleyways limit the utilization of vehicles that exceed the road capacity and (ii) certain roads are exclusive to certain vehicle types. In networks, limited access and exclusive lanes are represented as links, or arcs, exclusive to one or another. Taking these limitations into consideration, we have developed a unique model, which we have termed Vehicle Routing Problem with Exclusive Links (VRP-EL). The model was validated and tested for its performance on scenarios with varying ratios of exclusive links. Scenarios up to 500 customers were tested on a meta-heuristic algorithm, simulated annealing. VRP-EL produces realistic outcomes. Limiting certain links to be selected according to vehicle types increases overall travel distance. However, this increase outweighs the cost of re-planning and rerouting had they not been constrained initially. The reduction in traveling distance leads to fossil fuel reduction for the overall system. The estimation of reduced carbon emissions through applying the proposed model is presented. Considering the severe traffic congestion and carbon emissions caused by motorcycles in Vietnam, the proposed model leads to a sustainable road environment.

However, current commitments of global societies are not sufficient, party owing to the lack of cost-effective decarbonization measures. The SolarEV City concept is proposed for cost-effective urban decarbonization combining rooftop PV with EV through bi-directional charging in a city scale. In this study, we conducted techno-economic analyses to test the concept in Paris and Ile-de-France. PV+EV systems are found to add value to rooftop PV systems raising selfconsumption and self-sufficiency, when the roof coverage by PV is reached to 50-60% for Paris and 20-30% for Ile-de-France, allowing to bypass expensive stand-alone battery storage. The system allows CO2 emissions reduction through accelerated development of EV.

Since recent marine application of fuel cell systems has been due largely limited to small-sized ships, this paper was aimed to investigate the technical applicability of molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) for medium and large-sized ships, using a 180 kW class hybrid test bed with combined power sources: A 100 kW MCFC, a 30 kW battery and a 50 kW diesel generator. This study focused primarily on determining whether the combined system designed in consideration of actual marine power system configuration could function properly. A case study was conducted with a 5500 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) container vessel. The operation profile was collected and analyzed in order to develop electric load scenarios applicable to the power system. Throughout the experiment, we evaluated the power quality of the voltage and frequency in the process of synchronization and de-synchronization across the power sources. Therefore, research results revealed that power quality continued to be excellent. This outcome provides insight into the technical reliability of MCFC application on large marine vessels.

Since recent marine application of fuel cell systems has been due largely limited to small-sized ships, this paper was aimed to investigate the technical applicability of molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) for medium and large-sized ships, using a 180 kW class hybrid test bed with combined power sources: A 100 kW MCFC, a 30 kW battery and a 50 kW diesel generator. This study focused primarily on determining whether the combined system designed in consideration of actual marine power system configuration could function properly. A case study was conducted with a 5500 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) container vessel. The operation profile was collected and analyzed in order to develop electric load scenarios applicable to the power system. Throughout the experiment, we evaluated the power quality of the voltage and frequency in the process of synchronization and de-synchronization across the power sources. Therefore, research results revealed that power quality continued to be excellent. This outcome provides insight into the technical reliability of MCFC application on large marine vessels.

Many mathematical models have been proposed to estimate vertical tidal current profiles. However, as previous studies have shown that tidal current energy sites have different characteristics in their vertical tidal current profiles, it is necessary to estimate the profiles from field-measured data for practical purposes. In this study, we measured layered tidal currents over two months using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) to analyze the characteristics of vertical tidal current profiles at the Jangjuk Strait, a candidate site for tidal current energy. As a result, the power law parameter α and bed roughness β were estimated as 4.51–12.41 and 0.38–0.42, respectively. Additionally, the maximum roughness length representing seabed roughness in the logarithmic profile was estimated as 0.221 m, and the estimated friction velocity was 0.038–0.194 m/s. Furthermore, a high correlation was observed between the depth-averaged tidal current velocity and friction velocities at all sites during flood and ebb tide conditions. A high correlation was also found between the bed roughness, roughness length, and power law exponent at relatively deeper sites. Tidal current energy sites display distinct characteristics compared to other sea areas. Therefore, it is essential to account for field conditions when conducting numerical modeling and design.

The desiccation tolerance of the intertidal seagrass Zostera japonica has been demonstrated in a number of studies; however, the factors limiting expansion of intertidal seagrass species into subtidal zones remain controversial. We transplanted Z. japonica shoots from the intermediate intertidal zone into the plots with and without Z. marina shoots in both the lower intertidal and shallow subtidal zones to investigate the factors controlling Z. japonica growth in these zones. Daily photon flux density at the Z. japonica canopy level was attenuated by both water depth and coexisting Z. marina shoots but more strongly by Z. marina shoots than water depth in the transplant plots. The shoot density and biomass of Z. japonica transplants were significantly lower in transplant plots in the subtidal zone than in the lower intertidal zone. Although the photon flux density was significantly lower in transplant plots containing Z. marina shoots, the growth of Z. japonica transplants did not differ significantly between plots with and those without Z. marina shoots. Z. japonica transplants exhibited photoacclimatory responses such as increased shoot height and chlorophyll content under the lower-light conditions, offsetting the reduced light availability so that no significant differences in transplant growth occurred between plots with and those without Z. marina shoots. As the growth of Z. japonica transplants decreased significantly in the subtidal zone, the interactive effects of environmental stresses associated with tidal inundation and reduced light availability may restrict penetration of the intertidal seagrass Z. japonica into the subtidal zone. The persistence of high photosynthetic performance after air exposure and a regular arrangement of the densely overlapped leaves atop wet sediments may be desiccation tolerance mechanisms for Z. japonica in the intertidal zone.
