Some broad similarities in patterns of vegetation change are revealed, despite the differences between sites and their pollen catchments, which can be related largely to global climate and sea-level changes. The original estimated time scale of the Lynch's Crater record is largely confirmed from comparison with the more thoroughly dated ODP record. Conversely, the Lynch's Crater pollen record has assisted in dating problematic parts of the ODP record. In contrast to Lynch's Crater, which reveals a sharp and sustained reduction in drier araucarian forest around 38,000 yrs BP, considered to have been the result of burning by Aboriginal people, the ODP record indicates, most likely, a stepwise reduction, dating from 140,000 yrs BP or beyond. The earliest reduction shows lack of a clear connection between Araucaria decline and increased burning and suggests that people may not have been involved at this stage. However, a further decline in araucarian forest, possibly around 45,000 yrs BP, which has a more substantial environmental impact and is not related to a time of major climate change, is likely, at least partially, the result of human burning. The suggestion, from the ODP core oxygen isotope record, of a regional sea-surface temperature increase of around 4 degrees C between about 400,000 and 250,000 yrs BP, may have had some influence on the overall decline in Araucaria and its replacement by sclerophyll vegetation. Nanotechnology, and particularly nanoparticles (NPs), command significant attention across diverse fields such as medicine, chemistry, and engineering. NPs are integrated into a base material through various techniques, such as dispersion, coating, and encapsulation. This review intends to offer an evaluation of the implementation of NPs in nuclear energy and radiation protection. Particular focus is given to nanofluids - suspensions of NPs in a base fluid - and their impact on the thermal–hydraulic and neutronic attributes of nuclear reactor cores. Discussion centers on how substituting water with nanofluids as a coolant can modify these characteristics. Computational modeling and experimental methods of nanofluids are examined, highlighting an enhanced heat transfer capacity under both regular and emergency reactor conditions. The influence of nanofluids on neutronic parameters, aiming for optimized operation and safety of nuclear reactors, is also explored. Furthermore, the potential of NPs for radiation shielding is considered, underlining their capability to attenuate radiation effects. Examples are drawn from the addition of NPs to containment structures in nuclear facilities and their use in radiotherapy, as well as enhancing radiation shielding in imaging techniques. Finally, the review encompasses the effects of nanofluids on surface oxidation and corrosion. The importance of these factors lies in their substantial impact on heat transport properties and potential for corrosive damage.

The existing methods of risk preference analysis need to design and execute questionnaires or experiments on the subjects, and hence are costly and time-consuming for bidding in electricity markets. This article proposes a new method of data-driven risk preference analysis for power generation plants based on historical data and inverse reinforcement learning. Historical data are transformed to the transition function model according to the specific market mechanism. An adjusted inverse reinforcement learning model is thereafter proposed along with the optimization objective and technical constraints. The proposed method is tested in a simulated electricity market environment using the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) day-ahead bidding data. Simulation results show that 1) thermal power plants prefer to adjust risk preferences within the day; 2) apart from the thermal power plants, the rest types of power plants are risk-neutral; 3) the daily risk preference trend of the thermal power plants varies in different seasons and is closely related to the load level.

Controlling the morphological structure of titanium dioxide (TiO2) is crucial for obtaining superior power conversion efficiency for dye‐sensitized solar cells. Although the sol–gel‐based process has been developed for this purpose, there has been limited success in resisting the aggregation of nanostructured TiO2, which could act as an obstacle for mass production. Herein, we report a simple approach to improve the efficiency of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSC) by controlling the degree of aggregation and particle surface charge through zeta potential analysis. We found that different aqueous colloidal conditions, i.e., potential of hydrogen (pH), water/titanium alkoxide (titanium isopropoxide) ratio, and surface charge, obviously led to different particle sizes in the range of 10–500 nm. We have also shown that particles prepared under acidic conditions are more effective for DSSC application regarding the modification of surface charges to improve dye loading and electron injection rate properties. Power conversion efficiency of 6.54%, open‐circuit voltage of 0.73 V, short‐circuit current density of 15.32 mA/cm2, and fill factor of 0.73 were obtained using anatase TiO2 optimized to 10–20 nm in size, as well as by the use of a compact TiO2 blocking layer.

This study aims to produce biochar and sugars from a macroalga Eucheuma denticulatum using dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis along with microwave-assisted heating. The reactions were operated at sulfuric acid concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2M, reaction temperatures of 150-170°C and a heating time of 10min. Compared to the raw macroalga, biochar qualities were improved with increased carbon content and lower ash and moisture contents. The calorific value of the biochar could be intensified up to 45%, and 39% of energy yield was recovered. Apart from producing biochar, the highest total reducing sugars were 51.47g/L (74.84% yield) along with a low by-product 5-HMF of 0.20g/L, when the biomass was treated under the optimum conditions at 160°C with 0.1M H2SO4. Thus, this study demonstrated that macroalgae could be potentially used as biomass feedstock under microwave-assisted acid hydrolysis for the production of biofuel and value-added products.

AbstractHerein, we present ultrasmall delafossite‐type Mg‐doped CuCrO2 nanocrystals prepared by using hydrothermal synthesis and their first application as photocathodes in efficient p‐type dye‐sensitized solar cells. The short‐circuit current density (Jsc) is notably increased by approximately 27 % owing to the decreased crystallite size and the enhanced optical transmittance associated with Mg doping of the CuCrO2 nanocrystalline sample. An open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 201 mV, Jsc of 1.51 mA cm−2, fill factor of 0.449, and overall photoconversion efficiency of 0.132 % have been achieved with the CuCr0.9Mg0.1O2 dye photocathode sensitized with the P1 dye under optimized conditions. This efficiency is nearly three times higher than that of the NiO‐based reference device, which is attributed to the largely improved Voc and Jsc. The augmentation of Voc and Jsc can be attributed to the lower valance band position and the faster hole diffusion coefficient of CuCr0.9Mg0.1O2 compared to those of the NiO reference, respectively, which leads to a higher hole collection efficiency.

Jacob;Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have received considerable attention over the past two decades as a promising alternative to their inorganic counterparts. Although the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OPVs has rapidly increased in the last ten years exceeding 18%, higher PCEs are still needed to commercialize this emerging technology. The weak light absorption, particularly at wavelengths outside the visible region, and the recombination losses of the photo-generated charge carriers represent the major challenges for the PCE of OPVS. The light harvest and survival of the photo-generated charge carriers within OPVs are restricted to multiple factors such as material properties and device engineering. The application of different types of inorganic nanoparticles (INPs) in OPVs has been reported by many researchers as an effective strategy to overcome most of the PCE limitations. Here, a comprehensive overview of the progress in the performance of OPVs due to the application of different INPs over the past decade is provided. This review also presents an in-depth analysis of the efficiency loss pathways at the different steps of the photovoltaic effect and how INPs can address these issues resulting in PCE enhancement of OPVs. Finally, the impacts of this approach on the stability and cost of the device in addition to challenges and outlook are discussed.

The xylose isomerase gene from Bacteroides valgutus and pentose phosphate pathway genes from S. cerevisiae were overexpressed in the yeast strain. The strain was further modified by the overexpression of gene Aro1 (with a stop codon of AroE) and a feedback-resistant Aro4opt mutant gene from S. cerevisiae. Under oxygen-limited conditions, it produced 65 mg/L cis,cis-muconic acid from xylose. Co-fermentation of 88 g/L glucose and 50 g/L xylose generated 54 g/L ethanol and 248 mg/L cis,cis-muconic acid. Under aerobic conditions, muconic acid titer reached 424 mg/L. With the supplement of 1 g/L catechol, 1286 mg/L muconic acid was produced. Fermentation of an oil palm empty fruit bunch hydrolysate resulted in 31.3 g/L ethanol and 53.4 mg/L muconic acid. This is the first report on the production of muconic acid from lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysate using a recombinant xylose-fermenting yeast.

Electricity generation systems have traditionally been evaluated using only a limited number of economic or environmental indicators, for example capital investment, generation cost or carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, the evaluations have generally been restricted to performance within the geographic boundary of the power station. This paper reports a sustainability assessment of power generation from Australian fossil fuels, notably black coal, brown coal and natural gas. A range of key sustainability indicators incorporating environmental, economic and social performance are included. The system boundary incorporates fuel extraction, fuel transport to the power station, generation of power, and transmission of electricity to the point of use. Most commonly employed existing technologies and some promising advanced technologies for power generation are considered. The cases of exporting Australian LNG and black coal to Japan for power generation in that country have also been considered. No one fuel or technology system was superior or inferior for every indicator. However the following generalizations can be made: Natural gas combined cycle systems have advantages for the majority of environmental and economic indicators, brown coal has an advantage in terms of value added, and black coal has relatively poor safety performance.

Some broad similarities in patterns of vegetation change are revealed, despite the differences between sites and their pollen catchments, which can be related largely to global climate and sea-level changes. The original estimated time scale of the Lynch's Crater record is largely confirmed from comparison with the more thoroughly dated ODP record. Conversely, the Lynch's Crater pollen record has assisted in dating problematic parts of the ODP record. In contrast to Lynch's Crater, which reveals a sharp and sustained reduction in drier araucarian forest around 38,000 yrs BP, considered to have been the result of burning by Aboriginal people, the ODP record indicates, most likely, a stepwise reduction, dating from 140,000 yrs BP or beyond. The earliest reduction shows lack of a clear connection between Araucaria decline and increased burning and suggests that people may not have been involved at this stage. However, a further decline in araucarian forest, possibly around 45,000 yrs BP, which has a more substantial environmental impact and is not related to a time of major climate change, is likely, at least partially, the result of human burning. The suggestion, from the ODP core oxygen isotope record, of a regional sea-surface temperature increase of around 4 degrees C between about 400,000 and 250,000 yrs BP, may have had some influence on the overall decline in Araucaria and its replacement by sclerophyll vegetation. Nanotechnology, and particularly nanoparticles (NPs), command significant attention across diverse fields such as medicine, chemistry, and engineering. NPs are integrated into a base material through various techniques, such as dispersion, coating, and encapsulation. This review intends to offer an evaluation of the implementation of NPs in nuclear energy and radiation protection. Particular focus is given to nanofluids - suspensions of NPs in a base fluid - and their impact on the thermal–hydraulic and neutronic attributes of nuclear reactor cores. Discussion centers on how substituting water with nanofluids as a coolant can modify these characteristics. Computational modeling and experimental methods of nanofluids are examined, highlighting an enhanced heat transfer capacity under both regular and emergency reactor conditions. The influence of nanofluids on neutronic parameters, aiming for optimized operation and safety of nuclear reactors, is also explored. Furthermore, the potential of NPs for radiation shielding is considered, underlining their capability to attenuate radiation effects. Examples are drawn from the addition of NPs to containment structures in nuclear facilities and their use in radiotherapy, as well as enhancing radiation shielding in imaging techniques. Finally, the review encompasses the effects of nanofluids on surface oxidation and corrosion. The importance of these factors lies in their substantial impact on heat transport properties and potential for corrosive damage.

The existing methods of risk preference analysis need to design and execute questionnaires or experiments on the subjects, and hence are costly and time-consuming for bidding in electricity markets. This article proposes a new method of data-driven risk preference analysis for power generation plants based on historical data and inverse reinforcement learning. Historical data are transformed to the transition function model according to the specific market mechanism. An adjusted inverse reinforcement learning model is thereafter proposed along with the optimization objective and technical constraints. The proposed method is tested in a simulated electricity market environment using the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) day-ahead bidding data. Simulation results show that 1) thermal power plants prefer to adjust risk preferences within the day; 2) apart from the thermal power plants, the rest types of power plants are risk-neutral; 3) the daily risk preference trend of the thermal power plants varies in different seasons and is closely related to the load level.

Controlling the morphological structure of titanium dioxide (TiO2) is crucial for obtaining superior power conversion efficiency for dye‐sensitized solar cells. Although the sol–gel‐based process has been developed for this purpose, there has been limited success in resisting the aggregation of nanostructured TiO2, which could act as an obstacle for mass production. Herein, we report a simple approach to improve the efficiency of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSC) by controlling the degree of aggregation and particle surface charge through zeta potential analysis. We found that different aqueous colloidal conditions, i.e., potential of hydrogen (pH), water/titanium alkoxide (titanium isopropoxide) ratio, and surface charge, obviously led to different particle sizes in the range of 10–500 nm. We have also shown that particles prepared under acidic conditions are more effective for DSSC application regarding the modification of surface charges to improve dye loading and electron injection rate properties. Power conversion efficiency of 6.54%, open‐circuit voltage of 0.73 V, short‐circuit current density of 15.32 mA/cm2, and fill factor of 0.73 were obtained using anatase TiO2 optimized to 10–20 nm in size, as well as by the use of a compact TiO2 blocking layer.

This study aims to produce biochar and sugars from a macroalga Eucheuma denticulatum using dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis along with microwave-assisted heating. The reactions were operated at sulfuric acid concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2M, reaction temperatures of 150-170°C and a heating time of 10min. Compared to the raw macroalga, biochar qualities were improved with increased carbon content and lower ash and moisture contents. The calorific value of the biochar could be intensified up to 45%, and 39% of energy yield was recovered. Apart from producing biochar, the highest total reducing sugars were 51.47g/L (74.84% yield) along with a low by-product 5-HMF of 0.20g/L, when the biomass was treated under the optimum conditions at 160°C with 0.1M H2SO4. Thus, this study demonstrated that macroalgae could be potentially used as biomass feedstock under microwave-assisted acid hydrolysis for the production of biofuel and value-added products.

AbstractHerein, we present ultrasmall delafossite‐type Mg‐doped CuCrO2 nanocrystals prepared by using hydrothermal synthesis and their first application as photocathodes in efficient p‐type dye‐sensitized solar cells. The short‐circuit current density (Jsc) is notably increased by approximately 27 % owing to the decreased crystallite size and the enhanced optical transmittance associated with Mg doping of the CuCrO2 nanocrystalline sample. An open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 201 mV, Jsc of 1.51 mA cm−2, fill factor of 0.449, and overall photoconversion efficiency of 0.132 % have been achieved with the CuCr0.9Mg0.1O2 dye photocathode sensitized with the P1 dye under optimized conditions. This efficiency is nearly three times higher than that of the NiO‐based reference device, which is attributed to the largely improved Voc and Jsc. The augmentation of Voc and Jsc can be attributed to the lower valance band position and the faster hole diffusion coefficient of CuCr0.9Mg0.1O2 compared to those of the NiO reference, respectively, which leads to a higher hole collection efficiency.

Jacob;Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have received considerable attention over the past two decades as a promising alternative to their inorganic counterparts. Although the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OPVs has rapidly increased in the last ten years exceeding 18%, higher PCEs are still needed to commercialize this emerging technology. The weak light absorption, particularly at wavelengths outside the visible region, and the recombination losses of the photo-generated charge carriers represent the major challenges for the PCE of OPVS. The light harvest and survival of the photo-generated charge carriers within OPVs are restricted to multiple factors such as material properties and device engineering. The application of different types of inorganic nanoparticles (INPs) in OPVs has been reported by many researchers as an effective strategy to overcome most of the PCE limitations. Here, a comprehensive overview of the progress in the performance of OPVs due to the application of different INPs over the past decade is provided. This review also presents an in-depth analysis of the efficiency loss pathways at the different steps of the photovoltaic effect and how INPs can address these issues resulting in PCE enhancement of OPVs. Finally, the impacts of this approach on the stability and cost of the device in addition to challenges and outlook are discussed.

The xylose isomerase gene from Bacteroides valgutus and pentose phosphate pathway genes from S. cerevisiae were overexpressed in the yeast strain. The strain was further modified by the overexpression of gene Aro1 (with a stop codon of AroE) and a feedback-resistant Aro4opt mutant gene from S. cerevisiae. Under oxygen-limited conditions, it produced 65 mg/L cis,cis-muconic acid from xylose. Co-fermentation of 88 g/L glucose and 50 g/L xylose generated 54 g/L ethanol and 248 mg/L cis,cis-muconic acid. Under aerobic conditions, muconic acid titer reached 424 mg/L. With the supplement of 1 g/L catechol, 1286 mg/L muconic acid was produced. Fermentation of an oil palm empty fruit bunch hydrolysate resulted in 31.3 g/L ethanol and 53.4 mg/L muconic acid. This is the first report on the production of muconic acid from lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysate using a recombinant xylose-fermenting yeast.

Electricity generation systems have traditionally been evaluated using only a limited number of economic or environmental indicators, for example capital investment, generation cost or carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, the evaluations have generally been restricted to performance within the geographic boundary of the power station. This paper reports a sustainability assessment of power generation from Australian fossil fuels, notably black coal, brown coal and natural gas. A range of key sustainability indicators incorporating environmental, economic and social performance are included. The system boundary incorporates fuel extraction, fuel transport to the power station, generation of power, and transmission of electricity to the point of use. Most commonly employed existing technologies and some promising advanced technologies for power generation are considered. The cases of exporting Australian LNG and black coal to Japan for power generation in that country have also been considered. No one fuel or technology system was superior or inferior for every indicator. However the following generalizations can be made: Natural gas combined cycle systems have advantages for the majority of environmental and economic indicators, brown coal has an advantage in terms of value added, and black coal has relatively poor safety performance.
