However, most of the conventional frameworks permanently store all transactions which increases blockchain management cost and reduces the user privacy. Additionally, most of the existing solutions focus on facilitating energy trading and negotiation, while ignoring two critical issues: data acquisition and contract execution. The former refers to the process of collecting power generation/consumption information from on-site energy resources which is required to scale. The latter refers to the process of adjusting controllable loads’ operation in real-time. In this paper, we propose a removable blockchain architecture that introduces a Temporary Chain (TC) where transactions can be stored for a particular period of time. The architecture enables an energy manager node to effectively collect data for facilitating real-time load control. TC reduces the volume of transactions stored in blockchain which increases scalability, throughput, and privacy of the users and reduces latency. We present two approaches to implement TC which are: i) blackboard where a central authority stores temporary transactions, and ii) removable ledger. We introduce a lightweight mode to transfer data. The implementation results show that the proposed framework reduces blockchain storage size and delay and increases throughput.

The existing methods of risk preference analysis need to design and execute questionnaires or experiments on the subjects, and hence are costly and time-consuming for bidding in electricity markets. This article proposes a new method of data-driven risk preference analysis for power generation plants based on historical data and inverse reinforcement learning. Historical data are transformed to the transition function model according to the specific market mechanism. An adjusted inverse reinforcement learning model is thereafter proposed along with the optimization objective and technical constraints. The proposed method is tested in a simulated electricity market environment using the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) day-ahead bidding data. Simulation results show that 1) thermal power plants prefer to adjust risk preferences within the day; 2) apart from the thermal power plants, the rest types of power plants are risk-neutral; 3) the daily risk preference trend of the thermal power plants varies in different seasons and is closely related to the load level.

The global drive towards sustainability has ushered in a new era of transportation, prominently featuring the rise of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). The rapid rise of BEVs has been widely hailed as a crucial milestone in promoting sustainable transportation and combating climate change. The existing empirical evidence provides undeniable support for the essential role of BEVs to support net zero targets. However, like any disruptive technology, BEVs are not without their hidden effects. This paper seeks to explore and analyse these lesser-known repercussions (i.e., externalities) of BEV adoption. In doing so, it sheds light on the environmental, infrastructure, socio-economic and safety externalities of BEVs, aiming to foster a holistic understanding of their impact and facilitate informed decision-making. Furthermore, it highlights the critical role of public awareness and user education in maximising the benefits of BEVs and the importance of maintaining a balance of information in developing such campaigns. Empowering individuals, communities, and policymakers with accurate information, dispelling misconceptions, and fostering responsible BEV practices are essential for realising maximal environmental impacts of BEVs. The discussion emphasises the need for moving beyond climate-change targets that are merely based on tailpipe emissions, towards life-cycle-based approaches.

Public transport systems in different parts of the world are currently undergoing a change characterised by the introduction of battery-powered electric buses in everyday operations. The introduction of electric buses brings new challenges such as high investment costs and technology concerns, as well as new forms of collaboration between both established and new actors. The aim of this paper is to disentangle different actors’ rationale for the transition, identifying underlying interests in and expectations of the electric bus system. With a focus on the Swedish context, we found that whilst common rationales exist, these are influenced by collective expectations and different underlying interests for the actor groups. We found that the interests of the actors are grounded in expectations of future developments, but also relate to the experience that the transition is occurring faster than previously anticipated. The results show a high degree of consensus regarding the transition to electric buses, although the actors have varying resources and action spaces with which to influence the transition, which is largely determined by the institutional and local context.

COVID-19 has changed the permeability of borders in transboundary environmental governance regimes. While borders have always been selectively permeable, the pandemic has reconfigured the nature of cross-border flows of people, natural resources, finances and technologies. This has altered the availability of spaces for enacting sustainability initiatives within and between countries. In Southeast Asia, national governments and businesses seeking to expedite economic recovery from the pandemic-induced recession have selectively re-opened borders by accelerating production and revitalizing agro-export growth. Widening regional inequities have also contributed to increased cross-border flows of illicit commodities, such as trafficked wildlife. At the same time, border restrictions under the exigencies of controlling the pandemic have led to a rolling back and scaling down of transboundary environmental agreements, regulations and programs, with important implications for environmental democracy, socio-ecological justice and sustainability. Drawing on evidence from Southeast Asia, the article assesses the policy challenges and opportunities posed by the shifting permeability of borders for organising and operationalising environmental activities at different scales of transboundary governance.

The increasing demand for freight transport leads to rising fuel consumption and additional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study aims to evaluate the impact of route optimization of heavy vehicles on fuel consumption and GHG emissions. The regular routes of two piloted trucks were extracted and compared with the optimized distances from the simulated model by Network Analyst in Arc GIS. By using Network Analyst and combining it with the Fuel Consumption Rate (FCR) and GHG emission, this study takes a step forward to quantify the amount of fuel usage and GHG emitted from heavy vehicles in the optimized routes versus their regular paths. For this purpose, two different trucks of Blacktown City (Australia) were selected: a waste collector and a tree maintenance truck. The result of the study shows that using the optimized route instead of the regular one can reduce the distance driven by tree maintenance truck by 60%, fuel consumption by 62%, and GHG emissions by 62% per month. In addition, the optimized route shows a 10% reduction in distance travelled, 11% in fuel consumption, and 10% in GHG emission per month. This study also compares fixed-mission and changing-mission trucks. . The results in this part show that the fixed mission truck is much more efficient. Therefore, implementing any efficient vehicle routing system will have considerable impacts on the changing-mission trucks.

Both natural and human-induced disasters present major risks to sustainable development trajectories and require strategic management within regional and local plans. Climate change and its impacts, including intensified storms, flash floods, and other water-based disasters (WD), also pose a serious and increasing threat. Small, remote communities prone to weather extremes are particularly vulnerable as they often lack effective early warning systems and experience energy insufficiency. Humanitarian engineering provides a transdisciplinary approach to these issues, supporting practical development resources such as renewable energy, which can also be adapted for disaster response. This study details an exploratory investigation of community vulnerability and capability mapping (VCM) that identifies communities with high WD risk and limited response capability which may benefit from risk reduction engagement and program co-development. By presenting criteria appropriate for VCM, we highlight the anthropocentric characteristics that could potentially be incorporated within community-led action as part of a comprehensive scheme that promotes sustainable development.

However, most of the conventional frameworks permanently store all transactions which increases blockchain management cost and reduces the user privacy. Additionally, most of the existing solutions focus on facilitating energy trading and negotiation, while ignoring two critical issues: data acquisition and contract execution. The former refers to the process of collecting power generation/consumption information from on-site energy resources which is required to scale. The latter refers to the process of adjusting controllable loads’ operation in real-time. In this paper, we propose a removable blockchain architecture that introduces a Temporary Chain (TC) where transactions can be stored for a particular period of time. The architecture enables an energy manager node to effectively collect data for facilitating real-time load control. TC reduces the volume of transactions stored in blockchain which increases scalability, throughput, and privacy of the users and reduces latency. We present two approaches to implement TC which are: i) blackboard where a central authority stores temporary transactions, and ii) removable ledger. We introduce a lightweight mode to transfer data. The implementation results show that the proposed framework reduces blockchain storage size and delay and increases throughput.

The existing methods of risk preference analysis need to design and execute questionnaires or experiments on the subjects, and hence are costly and time-consuming for bidding in electricity markets. This article proposes a new method of data-driven risk preference analysis for power generation plants based on historical data and inverse reinforcement learning. Historical data are transformed to the transition function model according to the specific market mechanism. An adjusted inverse reinforcement learning model is thereafter proposed along with the optimization objective and technical constraints. The proposed method is tested in a simulated electricity market environment using the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) day-ahead bidding data. Simulation results show that 1) thermal power plants prefer to adjust risk preferences within the day; 2) apart from the thermal power plants, the rest types of power plants are risk-neutral; 3) the daily risk preference trend of the thermal power plants varies in different seasons and is closely related to the load level.

Historical data are transformed to the transition function model according to the specific market mechanism. An adjusted inverse reinforcement learning model is thereafter proposed along with the optimization objective and technical constraints. The proposed method is tested in a simulated electricity market environment using the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) day-ahead bidding data. Simulation results show that 1) thermal power plants prefer to adjust risk preferences within the day; 2) apart from the thermal power plants, the rest types of power plants are risk-neutral; 3) the daily risk preference trend of the thermal power plants varies in different seasons and is closely related to the load level.

Public transport systems in different parts of the world are currently undergoing a change characterised by the introduction of battery-powered electric buses in everyday operations. The introduction of electric buses brings new challenges such as high investment costs and technology concerns, as well as new forms of collaboration between both established and new actors. The aim of this paper is to disentangle different actors’ rationale for the transition, identifying underlying interests in and expectations of the electric bus system. With a focus on the Swedish context, we found that whilst common rationales exist, these are influenced by collective expectations and different underlying interests for the actor groups. We found that the interests of the actors are grounded in expectations of future developments, but also relate to the experience that the transition is occurring faster than previously anticipated. The results show a high degree of consensus regarding the transition to electric buses, although the actors have varying resources and action spaces with which to influence the transition, which is largely determined by the institutional and local context.

COVID-19 has changed the permeability of borders in transboundary environmental governance regimes. While borders have always been selectively permeable, the pandemic has reconfigured the nature of cross-border flows of people, natural resources, finances and technologies. This has altered the availability of spaces for enacting sustainability initiatives within and between countries. In Southeast Asia, national governments and businesses seeking to expedite economic recovery from the pandemic-induced recession have selectively re-opened borders by accelerating production and revitalizing agro-export growth. Widening regional inequities have also contributed to increased cross-border flows of illicit commodities, such as trafficked wildlife. At the same time, border restrictions under the exigencies of controlling the pandemic have led to a rolling back and scaling down of transboundary environmental agreements, regulations and programs, with important implications for environmental democracy, socio-ecological justice and sustainability. Drawing on evidence from Southeast Asia, the article assesses the policy challenges and opportunities posed by the shifting permeability of borders for organising and operationalising environmental activities at different scales of transboundary governance.

The increasing demand for freight transport leads to rising fuel consumption and additional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study aims to evaluate the impact of route optimization of heavy vehicles on fuel consumption and GHG emissions. The regular routes of two piloted trucks were extracted and compared with the optimized distances from the simulated model by Network Analyst in Arc GIS. By using Network Analyst and combining it with the Fuel Consumption Rate (FCR) and GHG emission, this study takes a step forward to quantify the amount of fuel usage and GHG emitted from heavy vehicles in the optimized routes versus their regular paths. For this purpose, two different trucks of Blacktown City (Australia) were selected: a waste collector and a tree maintenance truck. The result of the study shows that using the optimized route instead of the regular one can reduce the distance driven by tree maintenance truck by 60%, fuel consumption by 62%, and GHG emissions by 62% per month. In addition, the optimized route shows a 10% reduction in distance travelled, 11% in fuel consumption, and 10% in GHG emission per month. This study also compares fixed-mission and changing-mission trucks. . The results in this part show that the fixed mission truck is much more efficient. Therefore, implementing any efficient vehicle routing system will have considerable impacts on the changing-mission trucks.

Both natural and human-induced disasters present major risks to sustainable development trajectories and require strategic management within regional and local plans. Climate change and its impacts, including intensified storms, flash floods, and other water-based disasters (WD), also pose a serious and increasing threat. Small, remote communities prone to weather extremes are particularly vulnerable as they often lack effective early warning systems and experience energy insufficiency. Humanitarian engineering provides a transdisciplinary approach to these issues, supporting practical development resources such as renewable energy, which can also be adapted for disaster response. This study details an exploratory investigation of community vulnerability and capability mapping (VCM) that identifies communities with high WD risk and limited response capability which may benefit from risk reduction engagement and program co-development. By presenting criteria appropriate for VCM, we highlight the anthropocentric characteristics that could potentially be incorporated within community-led action as part of a comprehensive scheme that promotes sustainable development.
