In the present study, emission characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from hydrothermally treated municipal solid waste (H-MSW) combustion alone and H-MSW/coal co-combustion were investigated at different temperatures. The results showed that for all fuel combustion, the majority of PAHs were 3- or 4-ring PAHs. In addition, flue gas had the highest yields of PAHs followed by fly ash and bottom ash, while the ring number of dominated PAHs in fly ash was higher than those in flue gas and bottom ash. Compared to MSW, H-MSW combustion generated less PAHs at the value of 1131.95–7649.24 μg/g. The blending of H-MSW and coal reduced total PAH emissions and positive interactions were observed between H-MSW and coal during co-combustion. The toxicity equivalent quantity (TEQ) values of the PAHs from combustion were in the order MSW > H-MSW > H-MSW/coal, which was consistent with the total PAH emissions. The present study illustrated that significant reduction of PAH emissions and toxicity from combustion could be achieved by HT and the blending of H-MSW and coal.

Fault detection and isolation (FDI) is realized by analyzing individual cell voltages. A feature extraction method Fisher Discriminant Analysis (FDA) and a multi-class classification method Directed Acyclic Graph Support Vector Machine (DAGSVM) are utilized successively to extract the useful features from raw data and classify the extracted features into various classes related to health states. Experimental data of two different stacks are used to validate the proposed approach. The results show that five concerned faults can be detected and isolated with a high accuracy. Moreover, the light computational cost of the approach enhances the possibility of its online implementation.

Abstract Liquid desiccant cooling systems are considered a promising technology for accurate humidity control and high energy efficiency. The dehumidifier and the regenerator are the two main components in the system, and their performance directly determines the system performance. This paper is a comprehensive review of the empirical correlations for the determination of mass transfer coefficient and moisture effectiveness in both adiabatic and internal cooling/heating dehumidifier/regenerators, and it further discusses approaches to enhance their mass transfer performance. These methods include structural improvements, such as structural modification, ultrasound atomisation and membrane-based modules, and modification of liquid desiccants, such as the addition of surfactants and nanoparticles. Finally, a brief summary and some suggestions for future work are outlined and addressed.

Enhancing the reliability of energy networks and minimizing downtime is crucial, making self-healing smart grids indispensable for ensuring a continuous power supply and fortifying resilience. As smart grids increasingly incorporate decentralized prosumers, innovative coordination strategies are essential to fully exploit their potential and improve system self-healing capabilities. To address this need, this paper presents a novel bi-level strategy for managing the self-healing process within a smart grid influenced by Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRSs), Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs), and energy hubs. This approach taps into the combined potential of these prosumers to boost system self-healing speed and reliability. In the initial stage, the Smart Grid Operator (SGO) conducts self-healing planning during emergencies, communicating required nodal capacities to prevent forced load shedding and outlining incentives for smart prosumers. Subsequently, prosumers schedule their activities and contribute flexible capacities to the SGO. Bridging the first and second stages, an adaptive Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm ensures convergence between the SGO and prosumer schedules within a decentralized framework. This strategy underwent implementation on a 118-node distribution system using GAMS. Results demonstrate that the proposed concept reduces Forced Load Shedding (FLS) by 32.04% and self-healing costs by 17.48% through effective utilization of smart prosumers' flexible capacities. Furthermore, outcomes indicate that the SGO reduces FLS by 6.69% by deploying Mobile Electrical Energy Storages (MEESs) and Mobile Fuel Cell Trucks (MFCTs) to critical nodes. This paper aims to develop a green building meta-model for a representative passively designed high-rise residential building in Hong Kong. Modelling experiments are conducted with EnergyPlus to explore a Monte Carlo regression approach, which intends to interpret the relationship between input parameters and output indices of a generic building model and provide reliable building performance predictions. Input parameters are selected from different passive design strategies including the building layout, envelop thermophysics, building geometry and infiltration & air-tightness, while output indices are corresponding indoor environmental indices of the daylight, natural ventilation and thermal comfort to fulfil current green building requirements. The variation of sampling size, application of response transformation and bootstrap method, as well as different statistical regression models are tested and validated through separate modelling datasets. A sampling size of 100 per regression coefficient is determined from the variation of sensitivity coefficients, coefficients of determination and prediction uncertainties. The rank transformation of responses can calibrate sensitivity coefficients of a non-linear model, by considering their variation obtained from sufficient bootstrapping replications. Furthermore, the acquired meta-model with MARS (Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines) is proved to have better model fitting and predicting performances. This research can accurately identify important architectural design factors and make robust building performance predictions associated with the green building assessment. Sensitivity analysis results and obtained meta-models can improve the efficiency of future optimization studies by pruning the problem space and shorten the computation time.

This paper aims to develop a green building meta-model for a representative passively designed high-rise residential building in Hong Kong. Modelling experiments are conducted with EnergyPlus to explore a Monte Carlo regression approach, which intends to interpret the relationship between input parameters and output indices of a generic building model and provide reliable building performance predictions. The main aim of the experimental study reported here was to characterize the behavior of radiant cooling systems in a typical office environment, including the effect of ceiling fans on stratification, the variation in comfort conditions from perimeter to core, control on operative temperature vs. air temperature and the effect of carpet on cooling capacity. The goal was to limit both the first cost and the perceived risk associated with such systems. Two types of radiant systems, the radiant ceiling panel (RCP) system and the radiant slab (RS) system, were investigated. The experiments were carried out in one of the test cells that constitute the FLEXLAB test facility at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in March and April 2016. In total, ten test cases (five for RCP and five for RS) were performed, covering a range of operational conditions. In cooling mode, the air temperature stratification is relatively small in the RCP, with a maximum value of 1.6 K. The observed stratification effect was significantly greater in the RS, twice as much as that in the RCP. The maximum increase in dry bulb temperature in the perimeter zone due to solar radiation was 1.2 K for RCP and 0.9 K for RS – too small to have a significant impact on thermal comfort. The use of ceiling fans was able to reduce any excess stratification and provide better indoor comfort, if required. The use of thin carpet requires a 1 K lower supply chilled water temperature to compensate for the added thermal resistance, somewhat reducing the opportunities for water-side free cooling and increasing the risk of condensation. In both systems, the difference between the room operative temperature and the room air temperature is small when the cooling loads are met by the radiant systems. This makes it possible to use the air temperature to control the radiant systems in lieu of the operative temperature, reducing both first cost and maintenance costs.

The steam ejector performance is not fully understood as the phase transition has been ignored in many studies. The present work develops a two-phase condensing flow model to assess the steam ejector performance considering nonequilibrium condensation phenomena. The transition of the flow structure from an under-expanded flow to an over-expanded flow in the steam ejector is investigated in detail. We present that the maximum Mach number can reach 4.02 in the under-expanded flow, which is weakened to 2.88 in the over-expanded flow. The steam undergoes several expansion-compression processes in the steam ejector in the under-expanded flow, which induces the formation and evaporation of massive droplets. In the over-expanded flow, the steam is compressed and then expanded after leaving the primary nozzle and the condensation process is not observed in mixing and constant sections. The increasing suction chamber pressure significantly improves the entrainment ratio while leading to an increasing entropy loss coefficient. The entrainment ratio is improved from 0.25 for the under-expanded flow to 1.69 for the over-expanded flow, while the entropy loss increases from 0.081 for the under-expanded flow to 0.29 for the over-expanded flow. This indicates that the transition of the flow structure from an under-expanded flow to an over-expanded flow can entrain more steam from the last effect while causes more entropy losses in a steam ejector for the MED-TVC desalination system.

However, as a promising technology for both EVs and smart grid, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) tended to receive much less attention. This paper developed an agent-based joint EV and V2G model to simultaneously simulate how EVs and V2G might diffuse across space and over time, with empirical findings from a questionnaire survey in Beijing. In particular, random forest models were developed with the survey data to generate each agent’s preferences and attitudes towards EVs and V2G. The joint model also considered three typical levels of social influence, i.e., global influence, neighbor effect, and friendship effect, in the diffusion of EVs and V2G. Finally, the joint model was tested through several “what-if” scenarios, considering different V2G prices, EV/V2G advertisement intensities, and vehicle purchase restrictions. The survey results suggested that 67.7% of the respondents were familiar with EVs, but only 3.3% of them were familiar with V2G. However, over 70% of them would/might try V2G given that they had an EV. The model results suggested that the number of CV applicants was 6.19 times that of BEV applicants in 2030 in the baseline scenario, and only 27.8% of BEV users adopted V2G. Furthermore, V2G selling price, EV/V2G advertisement, and dedicated PHEV purchase permits were not very influential to the diffusion of V2G. The outcomes would be helpful for EV- and V2G-related stakeholders in policy making and technology investment.

However, as a promising technology for both EVs and smart grid, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) tended to receive much less attention. This paper developed an agent-based joint EV and V2G model to simultaneously simulate how EVs and V2G might diffuse across space and over time, with empirical findings from a questionnaire survey in Beijing. In particular, random forest models were developed with the survey data to generate each agent’s preferences and attitudes towards EVs and V2G. The joint model also considered three typical levels of social influence, i.e., global influence, neighbor effect, and friendship effect, in the diffusion of EVs and V2G. Finally, the joint model was tested through several “what-if” scenarios, considering different V2G prices, EV/V2G advertisement intensities, and vehicle purchase restrictions. The survey results suggested that 67.7% of the respondents were familiar with EVs, but only 3.3% of them were familiar with V2G. However, over 70% of them would/might try V2G given that they had an EV. The model results suggested that the number of CV applicants was 6.19 times that of BEV applicants in 2030 in the baseline scenario, and only 27.8% of BEV users adopted V2G. Furthermore, V2G selling price, EV/V2G advertisement, and dedicated PHEV purchase permits were not very influential to the diffusion of V2G. The outcomes would be helpful for EV- and V2G-related stakeholders in policy making and technology investment.

This goal was attempted to be achieved by a lifecycle comparative analysis of the viability of three zero-carbon fuels, ammonia, hydrogen, and inland electricity, based on the operational practicality as well as Well-to-Wake environmental impacts. Credible business scenarios were designed with a high-level screening of 27 short-route ferries currently engaged in 26 West-Scotland coastal routes. Then a series of comparative analyses between the diesel and the proposed alternative fuel sources was conducted. While carbon-free fuels are in the early stages of development in the UK, there are various views on how these fuels can be produced, distributed, and used onboard for the clean shipping economy. To determine the optimal energy solutions, all credible scenarios for the upstream pathways for these fuels were developed, based on the current and future prospected UK energy infrastructure and grids. Those scenarios were examined for West-Scotland shipping and extended to the UK targets. Their technical aspects for maritime application were also investigated in consideration of safety, regulation, infrastructural availability, supply chain constraints, barriers, and the downstream emission pathways to their uptake onboard. Ship conceptual designs were briefly conducted to evaluate the systems, technologies, and equipment required for onboard installation to utilise zero-carbon fuels. As a result of the study, when hydrogen was used as a fuel in fuel cells and electricity was supplied as a backup from batteries that store inland power and the solar PV system, GHG emissions were 25.7% of the conventional fossil fuel-using scenario. In the present study, emission characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from hydrothermally treated municipal solid waste (H-MSW) combustion alone and H-MSW/coal co-combustion were investigated at different temperatures. The results showed that for all fuel combustion, the majority of PAHs were 3- or 4-ring PAHs. In addition, flue gas had the highest yields of PAHs followed by fly ash and bottom ash, while the ring number of dominated PAHs in fly ash was higher than those in flue gas and bottom ash. Compared to MSW, H-MSW combustion generated less PAHs at the value of 1131.95–7649.24 μg/g. The blending of H-MSW and coal reduced total PAH emissions and positive interactions were observed between H-MSW and coal during co-combustion. The toxicity equivalent quantity (TEQ) values of the PAHs from combustion were in the order MSW > H-MSW > H-MSW/coal, which was consistent with the total PAH emissions. The present study illustrated that significant reduction of PAH emissions and toxicity from combustion could be achieved by HT and the blending of H-MSW and coal.

Experimental data of two different stacks are used to validate the proposed approach. The results show that five concerned faults can be detected and isolated with a high accuracy. Moreover, the light computational cost of the approach enhances the possibility of its online implementation.

Abstract Liquid desiccant cooling systems are considered a promising technology for accurate humidity control and high energy efficiency. The dehumidifier and the regenerator are the two main components in the system, and their performance directly determines the system performance. This paper is a comprehensive review of the empirical correlations for the determination of mass transfer coefficient and moisture effectiveness in both adiabatic and internal cooling/heating dehumidifier/regenerators, and it further discusses approaches to enhance their mass transfer performance. These methods include structural improvements, such as structural modification, ultrasound atomisation and membrane-based modules, and modification of liquid desiccants, such as the addition of surfactants and nanoparticles. Finally, a brief summary and some suggestions for future work are outlined and addressed.

Abstract Liquid desiccant cooling systems are considered a promising technology for accurate humidity control and high energy efficiency. The dehumidifier and the regenerator are the two main components in the system, and their performance directly determines the system performance. This paper is a comprehensive review of the empirical correlations for the determination of mass transfer coefficient and moisture effectiveness in both adiabatic and internal cooling/heating dehumidifier/regenerators, and it further discusses approaches to enhance their mass transfer performance. These methods include structural improvements, such as structural modification, ultrasound atomisation and membrane-based modules, and modification of liquid desiccants, such as the addition of surfactants and nanoparticles. Finally, a brief summary and some suggestions for future work are outlined and addressed.

Enhancing the reliability of energy networks and minimizing downtime is crucial, making self-healing smart grids indispensable for ensuring a continuous power supply and fortifying resilience. As smart grids increasingly incorporate decentralized prosumers, innovative coordination strategies are essential to fully exploit their potential and improve system self-healing capabilities. To address this need, this paper presents a novel bi-level strategy for managing the self-healing process within a smart grid influenced by Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRSs), Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs), and energy hubs. This approach taps into the combined potential of these prosumers to boost system self-healing speed and reliability. In the initial stage, the Smart Grid Operator (SGO) conducts self-healing planning during emergencies, communicating required nodal capacities to prevent forced load shedding and outlining incentives for smart prosumers. Subsequently, prosumers schedule their activities and contribute flexible capacities to the SGO. Bridging the first and second stages, an adaptive Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm ensures convergence between the SGO and prosumer schedules within a decentralized framework. This strategy underwent implementation on a 118-node distribution system using GAMS. Results demonstrate that the proposed concept reduces Forced Load Shedding (FLS) by 32.04% and self-healing costs by 17.48% through effective utilization of smart prosumers' flexible capacities. Furthermore, outcomes indicate that the SGO reduces FLS by 6.69% by deploying Mobile Electrical Energy Storages (MEESs) and Mobile Fuel Cell Trucks (MFCTs) to critical nodes. This paper aims to develop a green building meta-model for a representative passively designed high-rise residential building in Hong Kong. Modelling experiments are conducted with EnergyPlus to explore a Monte Carlo regression approach, which intends to interpret the relationship between input parameters and output indices of a generic building model and provide reliable building performance predictions. Input parameters are selected from different passive design strategies including the building layout, envelop thermophysics, building geometry and infiltration & air-tightness, while output indices are corresponding indoor environmental indices of the daylight, natural ventilation and thermal comfort to fulfil current green building requirements. The variation of sampling size, application of response transformation and bootstrap method, as well as different statistical regression models are tested and validated through separate modelling datasets. A sampling size of 100 per regression coefficient is determined from the variation of sensitivity coefficients, coefficients of determination and prediction uncertainties. The rank transformation of responses can calibrate sensitivity coefficients of a non-linear model, by considering their variation obtained from sufficient bootstrapping replications. Furthermore, the acquired meta-model with MARS (Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines) is proved to have better model fitting and predicting performances. This research can accurately identify important architectural design factors and make robust building performance predictions associated with the green building assessment. Sensitivity analysis results and obtained meta-models can improve the efficiency of future optimization studies by pruning the problem space and shorten the computation time.

The main aim of the experimental study reported here was to characterize the behavior of radiant cooling systems in a typical office environment, including the effect of ceiling fans on stratification, the variation in comfort conditions from perimeter to core, control on operative temperature vs. air temperature and the effect of carpet on cooling capacity. The goal was to limit both the first cost and the perceived risk associated with such systems. Two types of radiant systems, the radiant ceiling panel (RCP) system and the radiant slab (RS) system, were investigated. The experiments were carried out in one of the test cells that constitute the FLEXLAB test facility at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in March and April 2016. In total, ten test cases (five for RCP and five for RS) were performed, covering a range of operational conditions. In cooling mode, the air temperature stratification is relatively small in the RCP, with a maximum value of 1.6 K. The observed stratification effect was significantly greater in the RS, twice as much as that in the RCP. The maximum increase in dry bulb temperature in the perimeter zone due to solar radiation was 1.2 K for RCP and 0.9 K for RS – too small to have a significant impact on thermal comfort. The use of ceiling fans was able to reduce any excess stratification and provide better indoor comfort, if required. The use of thin carpet requires a 1 K lower supply chilled water temperature to compensate for the added thermal resistance, somewhat reducing the opportunities for water-side free cooling and increasing the risk of condensation. In both systems, the difference between the room operative temperature and the room air temperature is small when the cooling loads are met by the radiant systems. This makes it possible to use the air temperature to control the radiant systems in lieu of the operative temperature, reducing both first cost and maintenance costs.

The main aim of the experimental study reported here was to characterize the behavior of radiant cooling systems in a typical office environment, including the effect of ceiling fans on stratification, the variation in comfort conditions from perimeter to core, control on operative temperature vs. air temperature and the effect of carpet on cooling capacity. The goal was to limit both the first cost and the perceived risk associated with such systems. Two types of radiant systems, the radiant ceiling panel (RCP) system and the radiant slab (RS) system, were investigated. The experiments were carried out in one of the test cells that constitute the FLEXLAB test facility at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in March and April 2016. In total, ten test cases (five for RCP and five for RS) were performed, covering a range of operational conditions. In cooling mode, the air temperature stratification is relatively small in the RCP, with a maximum value of 1.6 K. The observed stratification effect was significantly greater in the RS, twice as much as that in the RCP. The maximum increase in dry bulb temperature in the perimeter zone due to solar radiation was 1.2 K for RCP and 0.9 K for RS – too small to have a significant impact on thermal comfort. The use of ceiling fans was able to reduce any excess stratification and provide better indoor comfort, if required. The use of thin carpet requires a 1 K lower supply chilled water temperature to compensate for the added thermal resistance, somewhat reducing the opportunities for water-side free cooling and increasing the risk of condensation. In both systems, the difference between the room operative temperature and the room air temperature is small when the cooling loads are met by the radiant systems. This makes it possible to use the air temperature to control the radiant systems in lieu of the operative temperature, reducing both first cost and maintenance costs.

The steam ejector performance is not fully understood as the phase transition has been ignored in many studies. The present work develops a two-phase condensing flow model to assess the steam ejector performance considering nonequilibrium condensation phenomena. The transition of the flow structure from an under-expanded flow to an over-expanded flow in the steam ejector is investigated in detail. We present that the maximum Mach number can reach 4.02 in the under-expanded flow, which is weakened to 2.88 in the over-expanded flow. The steam undergoes several expansion-compression processes in the steam ejector in the under-expanded flow, which induces the formation and evaporation of massive droplets. In the over-expanded flow, the steam is compressed and then expanded after leaving the primary nozzle and the condensation process is not observed in mixing and constant sections. The increasing suction chamber pressure significantly improves the entrainment ratio while leading to an increasing entropy loss coefficient. The entrainment ratio is improved from 0.25 for the under-expanded flow to 1.69 for the over-expanded flow, while the entropy loss increases from 0.081 for the under-expanded flow to 0.29 for the over-expanded flow. This indicates that the transition of the flow structure from an under-expanded flow to an over-expanded flow can entrain more steam from the last effect while causes more entropy losses in a steam ejector for the MED-TVC desalination system.

However, as a promising technology for both EVs and smart grid, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) tended to receive much less attention. This paper developed an agent-based joint EV and V2G model to simultaneously simulate how EVs and V2G might diffuse across space and over time, with empirical findings from a questionnaire survey in Beijing. In particular, random forest models were developed with the survey data to generate each agent’s preferences and attitudes towards EVs and V2G. The joint model also considered three typical levels of social influence, i.e., global influence, neighbor effect, and friendship effect, in the diffusion of EVs and V2G. Finally, the joint model was tested through several “what-if” scenarios, considering different V2G prices, EV/V2G advertisement intensities, and vehicle purchase restrictions. The survey results suggested that 67.7% of the respondents were familiar with EVs, but only 3.3% of them were familiar with V2G. However, over 70% of them would/might try V2G given that they had an EV. The model results suggested that the number of CV applicants was 6.19 times that of BEV applicants in 2030 in the baseline scenario, and only 27.8% of BEV users adopted V2G. Furthermore, V2G selling price, EV/V2G advertisement, and dedicated PHEV purchase permits were not very influential to the diffusion of V2G. The outcomes would be helpful for EV- and V2G-related stakeholders in policy making and technology investment.

This goal was attempted to be achieved by a lifecycle comparative analysis of the viability of three zero-carbon fuels, ammonia, hydrogen, and inland electricity, based on the operational practicality as well as Well-to-Wake environmental impacts. Credible business scenarios were designed with a high-level screening of 27 short-route ferries currently engaged in 26 West-Scotland coastal routes. Then a series of comparative analyses between the diesel and the proposed alternative fuel sources was conducted. While carbon-free fuels are in the early stages of development in the UK, there are various views on how these fuels can be produced, distributed, and used onboard for the clean shipping economy. To determine the optimal energy solutions, all credible scenarios for the upstream pathways for these fuels were developed, based on the current and future prospected UK energy infrastructure and grids. Those scenarios were examined for West-Scotland shipping and extended to the UK targets. Their technical aspects for maritime application were also investigated in consideration of safety, regulation, infrastructural availability, supply chain constraints, barriers, and the downstream emission pathways to their uptake onboard. Ship conceptual designs were briefly conducted to evaluate the systems, technologies, and equipment required for onboard installation to utilise zero-carbon fuels. As a result of the study, when hydrogen was used as a fuel in fuel cells and electricity was supplied as a backup from batteries that store inland power and the solar PV system, GHG emissions were 25.7% of the conventional fossil fuel-using scenario.
