Sin embargo, a pesar de todos los avances de la neurociencia, el mecanismo exacto de cómo actúa el alcohol en el SNC nos es aún desconocido. El objetivo de este trabajo es tratar de plantear y dar pruebas a favor de una hipótesis sobre como podría actuar realmente el alcohol en el cerebro. El método de este trabajo consta del análisis de 4 estudios que muestran las manipulaciones de diferentes mediadores de calcio y AMPc-‐PKA y las consecuencias de esas manipulaciones a nivel molecular, celular, neurobiológico y conductual. Por una parte los resultados obtenidos nos muestran que posiblemente, estos mediadores de calcio tengan una función muy importantes a la hora de explicar el mecanismo de acción del alcohol en el cerebro. Pero, no obstante, no son suficientes evidencias como para afirmar con completa claridad y certeza que este sea el mecanismo exacto de actuación del alcohol en el SNC. The stressfull way of life of our nowadays society in adition to the missconception of the potencial consequences from alcohol consum could be some of the reasons for why alcohol is the worldwide most consumed drug according to OMS. However, besides all the neuroscience developments, the true mechanism of alcohol functionament on the SNC has been not proved. The method of this paper consists of the analysis of 4 studies that show the manipulations of the different mediators of calcium and cAMP-‐PKA and the consequences of these manipulations at a molecular, cellular, neurobiological and behavioural level. The results, in one hand, show that is possible that those mediators of calcium are important for understands the true mechanism of how alcohol works in the brain. However, there are no enough evidences to completely agree that this is the exact mechanism by which alcohol acts at a central level.

Artículos en revistas Numerical models of transmission-constrained electricity markets are used to inform regulatory decisions. How robust are their results? Three research groups used the same data set for the northwest Europe power market as input for their models. Under competitive conditions, the results coincide, but in the Cournot case, the predicted prices differed significantly. The Cournot equilibria are highly sensitive to assumptions about market design (whether timing of generation and transmission decisions is sequential or integrated) and expectations of generators regarding how their decisions affect transmission prices and fringe generation. In small-scale applications, the most used working fluid has been HFC-245fa, although this is being substituted for low GWP alternatives. A new HCFO working fluid, HCFO-1224yd(Z), has appeared as a possible alternative for HFC-245fa. In this study, this alternative working fluid is analysed and, finally, the working fluid is experimentally tested as drop-in alternative in a commercial ORC system. The main purpose is to determine the feasibility of using HCFO-1224yd(Z) as a drop-in replacement for HFC-245fa in a real facility that was initially designed to operate with HFC-245fa. The results show how the use of HCFO-1224yd(Z) offers power output that ranges from 7.5% to 17.4% lower than that provided by HFC-245fa. Although HFC-245fa offers higher power output, the results show that HCFO-1224yd(Z) offers up to 7.7% higher cycle net efficiency; this is due to the higher input thermal rate required by HFC-245fa. Finally, HCFO-1224yd(Z) has been stated as a suitable alternative to HFC-245fa as a drop-in replacement in a small-scale, low-temperature ORC, which increases its attractiveness for heat source with higher temperatures.

AbstractAlthough canopy height has long been a focus of interest in ecology, it has remained difficult to study at large spatial scales. Recently, satellite‐borne LiDAR equipment produced the first systematic high resolution maps of vegetation height worldwide. Here we show that this new resource reveals three marked modes in tropical canopy height ~40, ~12, and ~2 m corresponding to forest, savanna, and treeless landscapes. The distribution of these modes is consistent with the often hypothesized forest‐savanna bistability and suggests that both states can be stable in areas with a mean annual precipitation between ~1,500 and ~2,000 mm. Although the canopy height states correspond largely to the much discussed tree cover states, there are differences, too. For instance, there are places with savanna‐like sparse tree cover that have a forest‐like high canopy, suggesting that rather than true savanna, those are thinned relicts of forest. This illustrates how complementary sets of remotely sensed indicators may provide increasingly sophisticated ways to study ecological phenomena at a global scale.

Coherence in Photosynthesis It is unclear how energy absorbed by pigments in antenna proteins is transferred to the central site of chemical catalysis during photosynthesis. Hildner et al. (p. 1448 ) observed coherence—prolonged persistence of a quantum mechanical phase relationship—at the single-molecule level in light-harvesting complexes from purple bacteria. The results bolster conclusions from past ensemble measurements that coherence plays a pivotal role in photosynthetic energy transfer. Hayes et al. (p. 1431 , published online 18 April) examined a series of small molecules comprised of bridged chromophores that also manifest prolonged coherence.

AbstractClimate change and land‐use change are two major drivers of biome shifts causing habitat and biodiversity loss. What is missing is a continental‐scale future projection of the estimated relative impacts of both drivers on biome shifts over the course of this century. Here, we provide such a projection for the biodiverse region of Latin America under four socio‐economic development scenarios. We find that across all scenarios 5–6% of the total area will undergo biome shifts that can be attributed to climate change until 2099. The relative impact of climate change on biome shifts may overtake land‐use change even under an optimistic climate scenario, if land‐use expansion is halted by the mid‐century. We suggest that constraining land‐use change and preserving the remaining natural vegetation early during this century creates opportunities to mitigate climate‐change impacts during the second half of this century. Our results may guide the evaluation of socio‐economic scenarios in terms of their potential for biome conservation under global change.

Capítulos en libros This paper assesses the scalability and replicability of smart grid projects, by means of the identification of limitations and barriers faced by these projects. Factors have been identified that impact a project s scalability and replicability by means of a review of demonstration projects. The factors are of technical, economic, regulatory and social acceptance nature, and they describe requirements for scalability and replicability. Data was collected from ongoing European smart grid demonstration projects through the use of an elaborated questionnaire on the identified factors. Which allowed to quantify the status quo to what extent projects have taken these factors into account. Dew to their nature the derived factors can be categorized in technical, economic and regulatory & stakeholder related factor areas The obtained results allowed the identification of barriers, i.e. limitations regarding the scalability and replicability of smart grid projects. In particular projects face barriers regarding the absence of standards, the physical limits of the existing infrastructure, the absence of cost-benefit analyses, the neglect of varying macro-economic factors, stakeholder involvement and from the dependency of projects on regional or national regulatory frameworks and market designs. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

A literature review was conducted aiming at investigating the use of Sustainability, Lean, Green and eco-efficiency concepts, as well as meaningful combinations of those, on the field of Production and Operations Management. The study reports on the scientific papers published in all major journals in the field over the period 2001–2015. A set of 83 papers from 40 journals were selected for further analyzes, aiming at uncovering the existing level of awareness and use of the synergic and symbiotic relationship between Lean Manufacturing and Green Production. The findings show that a modest share of papers, about 30 %, explicitly recognize the Lean-Green joint approach. The same study testifies a clear growth pattern, which is patently reinforced in the last two and a half years, on the number of papers that behold a combined approach towards more efficient and cleaner production activities. The research has highlighted that the Lean-Green link does, in fact, exist and is gaining momentum, but requires further reinforcements from the scientific community, as well as from the companies, to deliver excelled and environmentally sound production systems. Artículos en revistas Security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem is one of the necessary tools for system operators to make operational planning and real-time operation. The internalization of transmission-network and security constraints (e.g. N-1 criterion) could lead to different decisions in the generation dispatch. However, the computational burden of this problem is challenging mainly due to its inherent large problem size. Therefore, this paper proposes an N-1 security constrained formulation based on the Line Outage Distribution Factors (LODF) instead of the one based on Injection Sensitivity Factors (ISF). This formulation is at the same time more compact than analogous formulations for contingency constraints; hence, it presents a lower computational burden. The computational efficiency of the proposed formulation is shown by solving the SCUC of the IEEE 118 bus system with LODF and ISF. Additionally, an iterative methodology for filtering the active N-1 congestion constraints is detailed, and its implementation for large-scale systems is described. The results show that the proposed filter reduces the computational time by approximately 70% in comparison to the complete formulation of N-1 constraints in SCUC. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Cabeza; Manuel Ibáñez;Abstract The use of phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal storage in buildings was one of the first applications studied, together with typical storage tanks. An interesting possibility in building application is the impregnation of PCMs into porous construction materials, such as plasterboard or concrete, to increase thermal mass. The thermal improvements in a building due to the inclusion of PCMs depend on the climate, design and orientation of the construction, but also to the amount and type of PCM. Therefore, these projects require a complete simulation of the thermal behaviour of the designed space in the conditions of use established a priori. In this paper a simple methodology for the energetic simulation of buildings including elements with PCMs using the program TRNSYS is presented and validated. This procedure does not aim a simulation of the real transfer processes inside the materials with PCM, but to evaluate the influence of walls/ceiling/floor with PCM in the whole energy balance of a building. The key parameter in the simulations is the equivalent heat transfer coefficient which has to be determined for each material. Experimental evaluation of the coefficient is presented. The methodology is applied in a building such as a prototype room built with concrete panels with PCM.

Sin embargo, a pesar de todos los avances de la neurociencia, el mecanismo exacto de cómo actúa el alcohol en el SNC nos es aún desconocido. El objetivo de este trabajo es tratar de plantear y dar pruebas a favor de una hipótesis sobre como podría actuar realmente el alcohol en el cerebro. El método de este trabajo consta del análisis de 4 estudios que muestran las manipulaciones de diferentes mediadores de calcio y AMPc-‐PKA y las consecuencias de esas manipulaciones a nivel molecular, celular, neurobiológico y conductual. Por una parte los resultados obtenidos nos muestran que posiblemente, estos mediadores de calcio tengan una función muy importantes a la hora de explicar el mecanismo de acción del alcohol en el cerebro. Pero, no obstante, no son suficientes evidencias como para afirmar con completa claridad y certeza que este sea el mecanismo exacto de actuación del alcohol en el SNC. The stressfull way of life of our nowadays society in adition to the missconception of the potencial consequences from alcohol consum could be some of the reasons for why alcohol is the worldwide most consumed drug according to OMS. However, besides all the neuroscience developments, the true mechanism of alcohol functionament on the SNC has been not proved. The method of this paper consists of the analysis of 4 studies that show the manipulations of the different mediators of calcium and cAMP-‐PKA and the consequences of these manipulations at a molecular, cellular, neurobiological and behavioural level. The results, in one hand, show that is possible that those mediators of calcium are important for understands the true mechanism of how alcohol works in the brain. However, there are no enough evidences to completely agree that this is the exact mechanism by which alcohol acts at a central level.

Artículos en revistas Numerical models of transmission-constrained electricity markets are used to inform regulatory decisions. How robust are their results? Three research groups used the same data set for the northwest Europe power market as input for their models. Under competitive conditions, the results coincide, but in the Cournot case, the predicted prices differed significantly. The Cournot equilibria are highly sensitive to assumptions about market design (whether timing of generation and transmission decisions is sequential or integrated) and expectations of generators regarding how their decisions affect transmission prices and fringe generation. In small-scale applications, the most used working fluid has been HFC-245fa, although this is being substituted for low GWP alternatives. A new HCFO working fluid, HCFO-1224yd(Z), has appeared as a possible alternative for HFC-245fa. In this study, this alternative working fluid is analysed and, finally, the working fluid is experimentally tested as drop-in alternative in a commercial ORC system. The main purpose is to determine the feasibility of using HCFO-1224yd(Z) as a drop-in replacement for HFC-245fa in a real facility that was initially designed to operate with HFC-245fa. The results show how the use of HCFO-1224yd(Z) offers power output that ranges from 7.5% to 17.4% lower than that provided by HFC-245fa. Although HFC-245fa offers higher power output, the results show that HCFO-1224yd(Z) offers up to 7.7% higher cycle net efficiency; this is due to the higher input thermal rate required by HFC-245fa. Finally, HCFO-1224yd(Z) has been stated as a suitable alternative to HFC-245fa as a drop-in replacement in a small-scale, low-temperature ORC, which increases its attractiveness for heat source with higher temperatures.

AbstractAlthough canopy height has long been a focus of interest in ecology, it has remained difficult to study at large spatial scales. Recently, satellite‐borne LiDAR equipment produced the first systematic high resolution maps of vegetation height worldwide. Here we show that this new resource reveals three marked modes in tropical canopy height ~40, ~12, and ~2 m corresponding to forest, savanna, and treeless landscapes. The distribution of these modes is consistent with the often hypothesized forest‐savanna bistability and suggests that both states can be stable in areas with a mean annual precipitation between ~1,500 and ~2,000 mm. Although the canopy height states correspond largely to the much discussed tree cover states, there are differences, too. For instance, there are places with savanna‐like sparse tree cover that have a forest‐like high canopy, suggesting that rather than true savanna, those are thinned relicts of forest. This illustrates how complementary sets of remotely sensed indicators may provide increasingly sophisticated ways to study ecological phenomena at a global scale.

Coherence in Photosynthesis It is unclear how energy absorbed by pigments in antenna proteins is transferred to the central site of chemical catalysis during photosynthesis. Hildner et al. (p. 1448 ) observed coherence—prolonged persistence of a quantum mechanical phase relationship—at the single-molecule level in light-harvesting complexes from purple bacteria. The results bolster conclusions from past ensemble measurements that coherence plays a pivotal role in photosynthetic energy transfer. Hayes et al. (p. 1431 , published online 18 April) examined a series of small molecules comprised of bridged chromophores that also manifest prolonged coherence.

AbstractClimate change and land‐use change are two major drivers of biome shifts causing habitat and biodiversity loss. What is missing is a continental‐scale future projection of the estimated relative impacts of both drivers on biome shifts over the course of this century. Here, we provide such a projection for the biodiverse region of Latin America under four socio‐economic development scenarios. We find that across all scenarios 5–6% of the total area will undergo biome shifts that can be attributed to climate change until 2099. The relative impact of climate change on biome shifts may overtake land‐use change even under an optimistic climate scenario, if land‐use expansion is halted by the mid‐century. We suggest that constraining land‐use change and preserving the remaining natural vegetation early during this century creates opportunities to mitigate climate‐change impacts during the second half of this century. Our results may guide the evaluation of socio‐economic scenarios in terms of their potential for biome conservation under global change.

Capítulos en libros This paper assesses the scalability and replicability of smart grid projects, by means of the identification of limitations and barriers faced by these projects. Factors have been identified that impact a project s scalability and replicability by means of a review of demonstration projects. The factors are of technical, economic, regulatory and social acceptance nature, and they describe requirements for scalability and replicability. Data was collected from ongoing European smart grid demonstration projects through the use of an elaborated questionnaire on the identified factors. Which allowed to quantify the status quo to what extent projects have taken these factors into account. Dew to their nature the derived factors can be categorized in technical, economic and regulatory & stakeholder related factor areas The obtained results allowed the identification of barriers, i.e. limitations regarding the scalability and replicability of smart grid projects. In particular projects face barriers regarding the absence of standards, the physical limits of the existing infrastructure, the absence of cost-benefit analyses, the neglect of varying macro-economic factors, stakeholder involvement and from the dependency of projects on regional or national regulatory frameworks and market designs. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

A literature review was conducted aiming at investigating the use of Sustainability, Lean, Green and eco-efficiency concepts, as well as meaningful combinations of those, on the field of Production and Operations Management. The study reports on the scientific papers published in all major journals in the field over the period 2001–2015. A set of 83 papers from 40 journals were selected for further analyzes, aiming at uncovering the existing level of awareness and use of the synergic and symbiotic relationship between Lean Manufacturing and Green Production. The findings show that a modest share of papers, about 30 %, explicitly recognize the Lean-Green joint approach. The same study testifies a clear growth pattern, which is patently reinforced in the last two and a half years, on the number of papers that behold a combined approach towards more efficient and cleaner production activities. The research has highlighted that the Lean-Green link does, in fact, exist and is gaining momentum, but requires further reinforcements from the scientific community, as well as from the companies, to deliver excelled and environmentally sound production systems. Artículos en revistas Security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem is one of the necessary tools for system operators to make operational planning and real-time operation. The internalization of transmission-network and security constraints (e.g. N-1 criterion) could lead to different decisions in the generation dispatch. However, the computational burden of this problem is challenging mainly due to its inherent large problem size. Therefore, this paper proposes an N-1 security constrained formulation based on the Line Outage Distribution Factors (LODF) instead of the one based on Injection Sensitivity Factors (ISF). This formulation is at the same time more compact than analogous formulations for contingency constraints; hence, it presents a lower computational burden. The computational efficiency of the proposed formulation is shown by solving the SCUC of the IEEE 118 bus system with LODF and ISF. Additionally, an iterative methodology for filtering the active N-1 congestion constraints is detailed, and its implementation for large-scale systems is described. The results show that the proposed filter reduces the computational time by approximately 70% in comparison to the complete formulation of N-1 constraints in SCUC. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Cabeza; Manuel Ibáñez;Abstract The use of phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal storage in buildings was one of the first applications studied, together with typical storage tanks. An interesting possibility in building application is the impregnation of PCMs into porous construction materials, such as plasterboard or concrete, to increase thermal mass. The thermal improvements in a building due to the inclusion of PCMs depend on the climate, design and orientation of the construction, but also to the amount and type of PCM. Therefore, these projects require a complete simulation of the thermal behaviour of the designed space in the conditions of use established a priori. In this paper a simple methodology for the energetic simulation of buildings including elements with PCMs using the program TRNSYS is presented and validated. This procedure does not aim a simulation of the real transfer processes inside the materials with PCM, but to evaluate the influence of walls/ceiling/floor with PCM in the whole energy balance of a building. The key parameter in the simulations is the equivalent heat transfer coefficient which has to be determined for each material. Experimental evaluation of the coefficient is presented. The methodology is applied in a building such as a prototype room built with concrete panels with PCM.
