    Durante las últimas décadas se han formulado explícitamente varias hipótesis sobre el funcionamiento de las comunidades pelágicas lacustres en relación con el enriquecimiento en fósforo. Entre ellas, se cuentan: 1ª) la relación directa entre fósforo y biomasa planctónica, 2ª) los máximos de la riqueza específica planctónica a niveles intermedios de fósforo, 3ª) la desestabilización de los grupos funcionales de la red trófica debida al enriquecimiento en fósforo (ó “paradoja del enriquecimiento”), 4ª) el hecho de que la biomasa planctónica en todos los niveles sea el resultado de la interacción entre el recurso limitante (el fósforo, en este caso) y la red trófica encabezada por los peces ictiófagos, y 5ª) la marcada influencia del enriquecimiento y de los peces ictiófagos sobre el espectro de tamaños planctónicos. Con objeto de comprobar estas hipótesis, realizamos un estudio estacional durante año y medio sobre el plancton de 16 lagunas de gravera situadas en el valle del río Jarama (Madrid), las cuales presentan un gradiente claro de fósforo total promedio (36-2500 μg P/L) y pueden o no albergar peces ictiófagos, aunque casi todas tengan ciprínidos. La 1ª hipótesis sólo se cumplió para bacterias, fitoplancton y rotíferos, pero no para las restantes comunidades planctónicas. La 2ª hipótesis se refutó, pues los máximos de riqueza específica se presentaron en las lagunas hipertróficas. La 3ª hipótesis no se comprobó y, en el caso de bacterias y fitoplancton consumible por herbívoros, tuvo lugar una estabilización de los mismos con el aumento de fósforo; probablemente, el efecto estabilizador de la omnivoría debida a copépodos y a ciprínidos fuera el responsable de este resultado. Los peces ictiófagos afectaron favorablemente a la biomasa de cladóceros, no alcanzando su efecto a los niveles inferiores de la red, controlados claramente por el fósforo, lo cual prestó apoyo a la idea de la interacción entre fuerzas ascendentes y descendentes de la red trófica, pero refutó la idea de la cascada trófica. Tanto el fósforo como los peces ictiófagos influyeron sobre el espectro de tamaños de modo antagónico, lo cual complicó la 5ª hipótesis. La conclusión general de este ejercicio de contraste de hipótesis es -además de la obvia de continuar investigando las redes tróficas planctónicas- que necesitamos hipótesis más globales en apoyo epistemológico de este enriquecimiento de las paradojas que hemos observado. 15 páginas, figuras y tablas estadísticas Peer reviewed

    A través del análisis de los sedimentos acumulados en el humedal del Parque Nacional de Las Tablas de Daimiel y su correlación con los datos histórico-documentales disponibles se ha podido interpretar que los cambios registrados en dichos sedimentos no sólo responden a cambios naturales sino que la influencia humana ha sido notable, aunque con intensidad variable, a lo largo del último milenio. Los cambios registrados afectan fundamentalmente al uso del suelo y vienen determinados por las necesidades socioeconómicas de la población del entorno del Parque Nacional. La intensidad y duración relativa de estos impactos permite estimar la capacidad de recuperación del sistema de manera que el grado de intensidad viene determinado por la capacidad tecnológica de mantener una actuación sostenida sobre el suelo. Se puede identificar un período (natural) en que los impactos sobre el medio son instantáneos y de los que el medio se recupera rápidamente, un período de intensificación de la agricultura (preindustrial), en el que se producen cambios graduales suaves, y un periodo de introducción de la maquinaria en el campo (industrial) en el que los cambios son sostenidos en el tiempo y con un importante impacto impidiendo la recuperación del medio = The analysis of the sediments of a temperate wetland in central Spain (Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park) and their correlation to historical and documental data allows to interpret the environmental changes recorded in such sediments as due to the variable intensity human action in addition to the natural variability. Recorded events are related to land use changes that are caused by the socioeconomical circumstances of the surrounding human communities. Relative intensity and length of such impacts permits to estimate the duration of the anthropic events and the recovery ability of the natural system, evidencing that the intensity degree is determined by the technological capability to sustain a prolonged soil use. As a result, the Tablas de Daimiel National Park record has been divided in three periods: a “natural” period, when the impact of events is short and the environment is able to recover quickly, a “preindustrial” period, when changes are gradual but sustained, and an “industrial” period, when the sustained activity is so intense that the natural system is unable to recover.     [ES]: Entre las principales incertidumbres del Informe del Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC) (Trenberth et al., 2007) se encuentra la predicción de crecidas extremas en respuesta al Calentamiento Global. La falta de registros instrumentales dificulta en gran medida la posibilidad de diagnosticar la magnitud y frecuencia con la que ocurrirán los eventos extremos en relación con la variabilidad climática. Las evidencias de crecidas pasadas basadas en indicadores geológicos (sedimentarios y geomorfológicos) permiten ampliar los registros de eventos extremos (paleocrecidas) a los últimos milenios, y comprender su respuesta en relación al clima. En este trabajo se pretende describir el procedimiento metodológico utilizado en la literatura científica para la reconstrucción de eventos extremos obtenidos del pasado reciente basado en el estudio de procesos geológicos externos. Los registros sedimentariosobtenidos en diferentes ríos peninsulares muestran que las paleocrecidas son más frecuentes durante los estadios iniciales y finales de periodos fríos (e.g. Pequeña Edad del Hielo 1550-1850 A.D.). En el periodo instrumental (1910 hasta la actualidad), los ríos Atlánticos de la Península Ibérica han experimentado una disminución de la frecuencia de las crecidas ordinarias, y, en las cuencas Mediterráneas los datos existentes apuntan al aumento en la irregularidad hidrológica y la generación de crecidas relámpago. [EN]: Flood response to Global Warming is one of the major uncertainties on the latest IPCC (Trenberth et al., 2007). The lack of long instrumental records makes difficult to provide robust links between extreme events and climate variability. In this paper, we describe the methodological procedures used on scientific research for reconstructing past floods in the context of variability. Evidences from past floods based on sedimentary and geomorphic records (palaeofloods) show a higher frequency of floods during the initial and final stages of cold periods (e.g. Little Ice Age 1550-1850 A.D.). During the instrumental period (1910 to the present), Iberian Atlantic rivers show a decrease on frequency for ordinary flood events, and in Mediterranean rivers data point out to an increase in the hydrological variability with higher frequency of flash floods.     [ES]Los lagos de montaña ofrecen oportunidades de estudio que van mucho más allá de lo que su disposición en el territorio y abundancia pudieran sugerir. En este artículo presentamos un breve resumen de los temas que hemos abordado a lo largo de poco más de veinte años de investigación en los lagos de los Pirineos por parte del grupo de limnología del Centro de Investigaciones de Alta Montaña (CRAM) de la Universidad de Barcelona. Los estudios se enmarcan fundamentalmente en tres líneas generales: la vida en condiciones extremas, las relaciones cuenca-lago y los cambios ambientales.     Durante las últimas décadas se han formulado explícitamente varias hipótesis sobre el funcionamiento de las comunidades pelágicas lacustres en relación con el enriquecimiento en fósforo. Entre ellas, se cuentan: 1ª) la relación directa entre fósforo y biomasa planctónica, 2ª) los máximos de la riqueza específica planctónica a niveles intermedios de fósforo, 3ª) la desestabilización de los grupos funcionales de la red trófica debida al enriquecimiento en fósforo (ó “paradoja del enriquecimiento”), 4ª) el hecho de que la biomasa planctónica en todos los niveles sea el resultado de la interacción entre el recurso limitante (el fósforo, en este caso) y la red trófica encabezada por los peces ictiófagos, y 5ª) la marcada influencia del enriquecimiento y de los peces ictiófagos sobre el espectro de tamaños planctónicos. Con objeto de comprobar estas hipótesis, realizamos un estudio estacional durante año y medio sobre el plancton de 16 lagunas de gravera situadas en el valle del río Jarama (Madrid), las cuales presentan un gradiente claro de fósforo total promedio (36-2500 μg P/L) y pueden o no albergar peces ictiófagos, aunque casi todas tengan ciprínidos. La 1ª hipótesis sólo se cumplió para bacterias, fitoplancton y rotíferos, pero no para las restantes comunidades planctónicas. La 2ª hipótesis se refutó, pues los máximos de riqueza específica se presentaron en las lagunas hipertróficas. La 3ª hipótesis no se comprobó y, en el caso de bacterias y fitoplancton consumible por herbívoros, tuvo lugar una estabilización de los mismos con el aumento de fósforo; probablemente, el efecto estabilizador de la omnivoría debida a copépodos y a ciprínidos fuera el responsable de este resultado. Los peces ictiófagos afectaron favorablemente a la biomasa de cladóceros, no alcanzando su efecto a los niveles inferiores de la red, controlados claramente por el fósforo, lo cual prestó apoyo a la idea de la interacción entre fuerzas ascendentes y descendentes de la red trófica, pero refutó la idea de la cascada trófica. Tanto el fósforo como los peces ictiófagos influyeron sobre el espectro de tamaños de modo antagónico, lo cual complicó la 5ª hipótesis.     A través del análisis de los sedimentos acumulados en el humedal del Parque Nacional de Las Tablas de Daimiel y su correlación con los datos histórico-documentales disponibles se ha podido interpretar que los cambios registrados en dichos sedimentos no sólo responden a cambios naturales sino que la influencia humana ha sido notable, aunque con intensidad variable, a lo largo del último milenio. Los cambios registrados afectan fundamentalmente al uso del suelo y vienen determinados por las necesidades socioeconómicas de la población del entorno del Parque Nacional. La intensidad y duración relativa de estos impactos permite estimar la capacidad de recuperación del sistema de manera que el grado de intensidad viene determinado por la capacidad tecnológica de mantener una actuación sostenida sobre el suelo. Se puede identificar un período (natural) en que los impactos sobre el medio son instantáneos y de los que el medio se recupera rápidamente, un período de intensificación de la agricultura (preindustrial), en el que se producen cambios graduales suaves, y un periodo de introducción de la maquinaria en el campo (industrial) en el que los cambios son sostenidos en el tiempo y con un importante impacto impidiendo la recuperación del medio = The analysis of the sediments of a temperate wetland in central Spain (Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park) and their correlation to historical and documental data allows to interpret the environmental changes recorded in such sediments as due to the variable intensity human action in addition to the natural variability. Recorded events are related to land use changes that are caused by the socioeconomical circumstances of the surrounding human communities. Relative intensity and length of such impacts permits to estimate the duration of the anthropic events and the recovery ability of the natural system, evidencing that the intensity degree is determined by the technological capability to sustain a prolonged soil use. As a result, the Tablas de Daimiel National Park record has been divided in three periods: a “natural” period, when the impact of events is short and the environment is able to recover quickly, a “preindustrial” period, when changes are gradual but sustained, and an “industrial” period, when the sustained activity is so intense that the natural system is unable to recover.     [ES]: Entre las principales incertidumbres del Informe del Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC) (Trenberth et al., 2007) se encuentra la predicción de crecidas extremas en respuesta al Calentamiento Global. La falta de registros instrumentales dificulta en gran medida la posibilidad de diagnosticar la magnitud y frecuencia con la que ocurrirán los eventos extremos en relación con la variabilidad climática. Las evidencias de crecidas pasadas basadas en indicadores geológicos (sedimentarios y geomorfológicos) permiten ampliar los registros de eventos extremos (paleocrecidas) a los últimos milenios, y comprender su respuesta en relación al clima. En este trabajo se pretende describir el procedimiento metodológico utilizado en la literatura científica para la reconstrucción de eventos extremos obtenidos del pasado reciente basado en el estudio de procesos geológicos externos. Los registros sedimentariosobtenidos en diferentes ríos peninsulares muestran que las paleocrecidas son más frecuentes durante los estadios iniciales y finales de periodos fríos (e.g. Pequeña Edad del Hielo 1550-1850 A.D.). En el periodo instrumental (1910 hasta la actualidad), los ríos Atlánticos de la Península Ibérica han experimentado una disminución de la frecuencia de las crecidas ordinarias, y, en las cuencas Mediterráneas los datos existentes apuntan al aumento en la irregularidad hidrológica y la generación de crecidas relámpago. [EN]: Flood response to Global Warming is one of the major uncertainties on the latest IPCC (Trenberth et al., 2007). The lack of long instrumental records makes difficult to provide robust links between extreme events and climate variability. In this paper, we describe the methodological procedures used on scientific research for reconstructing past floods in the context of variability. Evidences from past floods based on sedimentary and geomorphic records (palaeofloods) show a higher frequency of floods during the initial and final stages of cold periods (e.g. Little Ice Age 1550-1850 A.D.). During the instrumental period (1910 to the present), Iberian Atlantic rivers show a decrease on frequency for ordinary flood events, and in Mediterranean rivers data point out to an increase in the hydrological variability with higher frequency of flash floods.     [ES]Los lagos de montaña ofrecen oportunidades de estudio que van mucho más allá de lo que su disposición en el territorio y abundancia pudieran sugerir. En este artículo presentamos un breve resumen de los temas que hemos abordado a lo largo de poco más de veinte años de investigación en los lagos de los Pirineos por parte del grupo de limnología del Centro de Investigaciones de Alta Montaña (CRAM) de la Universidad de Barcelona. Los estudios se enmarcan fundamentalmente en tres líneas generales: la vida en condiciones extremas, las relaciones cuenca-lago y los cambios ambientales. In this article we present a brief summary of the research carried out in the lakes of the Pyrenees in the last twenty years by the group of limnology of the Centre for High Mountain Research (CRAM) of the University of Barcelona.
