    Abstract. The demand on wind energy for power generation will increase significantly in the next decade due to the transformation towards renewable energy production. In order to optimize the power generation of a wind farm, it is crucial to understand the flow in the wind turbine wake. The flow in the near wake close to downstream of the wind turbine (WT) is complex and highly three-dimensional. In the present study, for the first time, the SWUF-3D (Simultaneous Wind measurement with Unmanned Flight Systems in 3D) fleet of multirotor UASs (uncrewed aerial systems) is deployed for field measurements on an operating 2 MW WT in complex terrain. The UAS fleet has the potential to fill the meteorological gap of observations in the near wake with high-temporal- and high-spatial-resolution wind vector measurements plus temperature, humidity and pressure. During the experiment, the flow up- and downstream of the WT is measured simultaneously. Various flight patterns are used to investigate the near wake of the WT. The velocity deficit and the turbulence profile at different downstream distances are measured by distributed UASs which are aligned perpendicular to the flow in the near wake. The results show the expected double-Gaussian shape in the near wake under nearly stable atmospheric conditions. However, measurements in unstable atmospheric conditions with high turbulence intensity levels lead to single-Gaussian-like profiles at equal downstream distances (<1 D). Additionally, horizontal momentum fluxes and turbulence spectra are analyzed. The turbulence spectra of the wind measurement at the edge of the wake could reveal that tip vortices can be observed with the UASs.

    Abstract. This paper describes a method to identify the heterogenous flow characteristics that develop within a wind farm in its interaction with the atmospheric boundary layer. The whole farm is used as a distributed sensor, which gauges through its wind turbines the flow field developing within its boundaries. The proposed method is based on augmenting an engineering wake model with an unknown correction field, which results in a hybrid (grey-box) model. Operational SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) data are then used to simultaneously learn the parameters that describe the correction field and to tune the ones of the engineering wake model. The resulting monolithic maximum likelihood estimation is in general ill-conditioned because of the collinearity and low observability of the redundant parameters. This problem is solved by a singular value decomposition, which discards parameter combinations that are not identifiable given the informational content of the dataset and solves only for the identifiable ones. The farm-as-a-sensor approach is demonstrated on two wind plants with very different characteristics: a relatively small onshore farm at a site with moderate terrain complexity and a large offshore one in close proximity to the coastline. In both cases, the data-driven correction and tuning of the grey-box model results in much improved prediction capabilities. The identified flow fields reveal the presence of significant terrain-induced effects in the onshore case and of large direction and ambient-condition-dependent intra-plant effects in the offshore one. Analysis of the coordinate transformation and mode shapes generated by the singular value decomposition help explain relevant characteristics of the solution, as well as couplings among modeling parameters. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used for confirming the plausibility of the identified flow fields.

    Abstract. The share of wind power in power systems is increasing dramatically, and this is happening in parallel with increased penetration of solar photovoltaics, storage, other inverter-based technologies, and electrification of other sectors. Recognising the fundamental objective of power systems, maintaining supply–demand balance reliably at the lowest cost, and integrating all these technologies are significant research challenges that are driving radical changes to planning and operations of power systems globally. In this changing environment, wind power can maximise its long-term value to the power system by balancing the needs it imposes on the power system with its contribution to addressing these needs with services. A needs and services paradigm is adopted here to highlight these research challenges, which should also be guided by a balanced approach, concentrating on its advantages over competitors. The research challenges within the wind technology itself are many and varied, with control and coordination internally being a focal point in parallel with a strong recommendation for a holistic approach targeted at where wind has an advantage over its competitors and in coordination with research into other technologies such as storage, power electronics, and power systems.

    Abstract. Scanning Doppler lidars have great potential for reducing uncertainty of wind resource estimation in complex terrain. Due to their scanning capabilities, they can measure at multiple locations over large areas. We demonstrate this ability using dual-Doppler lidar measurements of flow over two parallel ridges. The data have been collected using two pairs of long-range WindScanner systems operated in a dual-Doppler mode during the Perdigão 2017 measurement campaign. The lidars mapped the flow along the southwest and northeast ridges 80 m above ground level. By analyzing the collected data, we found that for different flow conditions on average wind speeds are 10 % higher over the southwest ridge compared to the northeast ridge. At the southwest ridge, the data shows, depending on the atmospheric conditions, a change of 20 % in wind speed along the ridge. For the measurement period, we have simulated the flow over the site using WRF-LES to compare how well the model can capture wind resources along the ridges. We used two model configurations. In the first configuration, surface drag is based purely on aerodynamic roughness whereas in the second configuration forest canopy drag is also considered. We found that simulated winds are underestimated in WRF-LES runs with forest drag due to an unrealistic forest distribution on the ridge tops. The correlation of simulated and observed winds is, however, improved when the forest parameterization is applied. WRF-LES results without forest drag overestimated the wind resources over the southwest and northeast ridges by 6.5 % and 4.5 % respectively. Overall, this study demonstrates the ability of scanning lidars to map wind resources in complex terrain.

    Abstract. As wind turbines grow larger, the use of flatback airfoils has become standard practice for the root region of the blades. Flatback profiles provide higher lift and reduced sensitivity to soiling at significantly higher drag values. A number of flow control devices has been proposed to improve the performance of flatback profiles. In the present study, the flow past a flatback airfoil at a chord Reynolds number of 1.5 × 106 with and without trailing edge flow control devices is considered. Two different numerical approaches are applied, Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations and Detached Eddy Simulations (DES). The computational predictions are compared to wind tunnel measurements to assess the suitability of each method. The effect of each flow control device on the flow is examined based on the DES results on the finer mesh. Results agree well with the experimental findings and show that a newly proposed flap device outperforms traditional solutions for flatback airfoils. In terms of numerical modelling, the more expensive DES approach is more suitable if the wake frequencies are of interest, but the simplest 2D RANS simulations can provide acceptable load predictions.

    Abstract. Accurate modeling of the dynamic stall remains a challenge for the design and construction of turbine blades and helicopter rotors. At the same time, wind turbines, for instance, are becoming steadily larger, further increasing the demands on their structure and necessitating even more detailed modeling of the forces at hand. The primarily used (semi-)empirical models today have a long research history and are invariably based on phase-averaged data from oscillating blade pitch experiments. However, much potential for more accurate modeling of uncertainties and force peaks is wasted here, since averaging blurs many features of the response signals. Even computational fluid dynamics can help little in this regard, since the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations used in practice cannot account for cycle variations, and scale-resolving models require extremely large amounts of computational resources. This paper presents an approach for a fully stochastic machine learning model that can nevertheless simulate these critical properties. Aerodynamic coefficients are compared with experimental data for different test cases. It is shown that synthetic force profiles which cannot be distinguished from the experimental data visually and are very close to them in the frequency spectrum can be generated. Additionally, attention is drawn to the difficulty of evaluating such a model, as traditional error metrics are of little use. A combination of dynamic time warping and the Earth mover's distance provides a robust solution for this problem.

    Abstract. The technical progress in the development and industrialization of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) over the past decade is significant. Yet, the higher Levelized Cost of Energy of FOWT, compared to onshore wind turbines, is still limiting the market share. One of the reasons for this is the larger motions and loads caused by the rough environmental excitations. Many prototype projects tend to employ more conservative substructure designs to meet the requirements on motion dynamics and structural safety. Another challenge lies in the multidisciplinary nature of a FOWT system, which consists of several strongly coupled subsystems. If these subsystems cannot work in synergy with each other, the overall system performance may not be optimized. Previous research has shown that a well-designed blade pitch controller is able to reduce the motions and structural loads of FOWTs. Nevertheless, due to the negative aerodynamic damping effect, improving the performance by tuning the controller is limited. One of the solutions is adding Tuned Liquid Multi-Column Damper Dampers (TLMCDs), meaning a structural solution to mitigate this limiting factor for the controller performance. It has been found that the additional damping, provided by TLMCDs, is able to improve the platform pitch stability, which allows a larger blade pitch controller bandwidth and thus a better dynamic response. However, if a TLMCD is not designed by taking the whole FOWT system dynamics into account, it may even deteriorate the overall performance. Essentially, an integrated optimization of these subsystems is needed. This paper has developed a Control Co-Design optimization framework for FOWTs installed with TLMCDs. By using the multi-objective optimizer Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, the objective is to optimize the platform, the blade pitch controller and the TLMCD simultaneously. Five free variables characterizing these subsystems are selected and the objective function includes the FOWT's volume of displaced water (displacement), several motion and load indicators. Instead of searching for a unique optimal design, an optimal Pareto surface of the defined objectives is determined. It has been found that the optimization is able to improve the dynamic performance of the FOWT, quantified by motions and loads, when the displacement remains similar. On the other hand, if motions and loads are constant, the displacement of the FOWT can be reduced, which is an important indication of lower manufacturing, transportation and installation costs. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the potential of advanced technologies such as TLMCDs to advance FOWTs for commercial competitiveness.

    Abstract. In contrast to fixed measuring devices, ship-based lidar systems provide highly reliable wind observations within extensive regions. Therefore, this kind of reference dataset provides a great potential for evaluating the performance of mesoscale numerical models in resembling mesoscale flow phenomena such as low-level jets – essential for an optimal development and operation of wind turbines. This paper presents a comparison between numerical output data from two state-of-the-art numerical datasets (ERA5 and NEWA) and the ship-mounted lidar measurements from the NEWA Ferry Lidar Experiment. The comparison was performed along the route covered by the vessel, as well as in specific locations within this route, to better understand the capabilities and limitations of the numerical models to precisely resemble the occurrence and main properties of low-level jets (LLJs) in different locations. The findings of this study show that the non-stationary nature of ship-based lidar measurements allows evaluating the accuracy of the models when retrieving jets' characteristics and occurrence under different temporal and spatial effects. Numerical models underestimate the occurrence of LLJs, and they struggle to accurately describe their main characteristics, with a particularly large underestimation of the falloff. The found results are to be seen in relation to the characteristics of the observations, such as the data availability, the time–position relation of the selected vessel's route, or the profile height limitation, as well as the features of the jets, with a particular relevance of core height and falloff. Additionally, the results illustrate the temporal and spatial shift between the LLJ events detected by the measurements and the models and the potential benefit of considering such deviations when studying LLJs' climatology through numerical modes.

    Abstract. The main obstacles in preliminary design studies or optimization of jacket substructures for offshore wind turbines are high numerical expenses for structural code checks and simplistic cost assumptions. In order to create a basis for fast design evaluations, this work provides the following: first, a jacket model is proposed that covers topology and tube sizing with a limited set of design variables. Second, a cost model is proposed that goes beyond the simple and common mass-dependent approach. And third, the issue of numerical efficiency is addressed by surrogate models for both fatigue and ultimate limit state code checks. In addition, this work shows an example utilizing all models. The outcome can be utilized for preliminary design studies and jacket optimization schemes. It is suitable for scientific and industrial applications.

    Abstract. This wind tunnel study investigates the aerodynamic effects of Mini Gurney flaps (MGFs) and their combination with vortex generators (VGs) on the performance of airfoils and wind turbine rotor blades. VGs are installed on the suction side aiming at stall delay and increased maximum lift. MGFs are thin angle profiles that are attached at the trailing edge in order to increase lift at pre-stall operation. The implementation of both these passive flow control devices is accompanied by a certain drag penalty. The wind tunnel tests are conducted at the Hermann- Föttinger Institut of the Technische Universität Berlin. Lift is determined with a force balance and drag with a wake rake for static angles of attack from −5° to 17° at a constant Reynolds number of 1.5 million. The impact of different MGF heights including 0.25 %, 0.5 % and 1.0 % and an uniform VG height of 1.1 % of the chord length are tested on three airfoils that are characteristic for different sections of large rotor blades. Furthermore, the clean and the tripped baseline cases are considered. In the latter, leading edge transition is forced by means of Zig Zag (ZZ) turbulator tape. The preferred configurations are the smallest MGF on the NACA63(3)618 and the AH93W174 (mid to tip blade region) and the medium sized MGF combined with VGs on the DU97W300 (root to mid region). Next, the experimental lift and drag polar data is imported into the software QBlade in order to design a generic rotor blade. The blade performance is simulated with and without the add-ons based on two case studies. In the first case, the retrofit application on an existing blade mitigates the adverse effects of the ZZ tape. Stall is delayed and the aerodynamic efficiency is partly recovered leading to an improvement of the power curve. In the second case, the new design application allows for the design of a more slender blade while maintaining the power output. Moreover, the alternative blade appears to be more resistant against forced leading edge transition.

    Abstract. The demand on wind energy for power generation will increase significantly in the next decade due to the transformation towards renewable energy production. In order to optimize the power generation of a wind farm, it is crucial to understand the flow in the wind turbine wake. The flow in the near wake close to downstream of the wind turbine (WT) is complex and highly three-dimensional. In the present study, for the first time, the SWUF-3D (Simultaneous Wind measurement with Unmanned Flight Systems in 3D) fleet of multirotor UASs (uncrewed aerial systems) is deployed for field measurements on an operating 2 MW WT in complex terrain. The UAS fleet has the potential to fill the meteorological gap of observations in the near wake with high-temporal- and high-spatial-resolution wind vector measurements plus temperature, humidity and pressure. During the experiment, the flow up- and downstream of the WT is measured simultaneously. Various flight patterns are used to investigate the near wake of the WT. The velocity deficit and the turbulence profile at different downstream distances are measured by distributed UASs which are aligned perpendicular to the flow in the near wake. The results show the expected double-Gaussian shape in the near wake under nearly stable atmospheric conditions. However, measurements in unstable atmospheric conditions with high turbulence intensity levels lead to single-Gaussian-like profiles at equal downstream distances (<1 D). Additionally, horizontal momentum fluxes and turbulence spectra are analyzed. The turbulence spectra of the wind measurement at the edge of the wake could reveal that tip vortices can be observed with the UASs.

    Abstract. This paper describes a method to identify the heterogenous flow characteristics that develop within a wind farm in its interaction with the atmospheric boundary layer. The whole farm is used as a distributed sensor, which gauges through its wind turbines the flow field developing within its boundaries. The proposed method is based on augmenting an engineering wake model with an unknown correction field, which results in a hybrid (grey-box) model. Operational SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) data are then used to simultaneously learn the parameters that describe the correction field and to tune the ones of the engineering wake model. The resulting monolithic maximum likelihood estimation is in general ill-conditioned because of the collinearity and low observability of the redundant parameters. This problem is solved by a singular value decomposition, which discards parameter combinations that are not identifiable given the informational content of the dataset and solves only for the identifiable ones. The farm-as-a-sensor approach is demonstrated on two wind plants with very different characteristics: a relatively small onshore farm at a site with moderate terrain complexity and a large offshore one in close proximity to the coastline. In both cases, the data-driven correction and tuning of the grey-box model results in much improved prediction capabilities. The identified flow fields reveal the presence of significant terrain-induced effects in the onshore case and of large direction and ambient-condition-dependent intra-plant effects in the offshore one. Analysis of the coordinate transformation and mode shapes generated by the singular value decomposition help explain relevant characteristics of the solution, as well as couplings among modeling parameters. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used for confirming the plausibility of the identified flow fields.

    Abstract. The share of wind power in power systems is increasing dramatically, and this is happening in parallel with increased penetration of solar photovoltaics, storage, other inverter-based technologies, and electrification of other sectors. Recognising the fundamental objective of power systems, maintaining supply–demand balance reliably at the lowest cost, and integrating all these technologies are significant research challenges that are driving radical changes to planning and operations of power systems globally. In this changing environment, wind power can maximise its long-term value to the power system by balancing the needs it imposes on the power system with its contribution to addressing these needs with services. A needs and services paradigm is adopted here to highlight these research challenges, which should also be guided by a balanced approach, concentrating on its advantages over competitors. The research challenges within the wind technology itself are many and varied, with control and coordination internally being a focal point in parallel with a strong recommendation for a holistic approach targeted at where wind has an advantage over its competitors and in coordination with research into other technologies such as storage, power electronics, and power systems.

    Abstract. Scanning Doppler lidars have great potential for reducing uncertainty of wind resource estimation in complex terrain. Due to their scanning capabilities, they can measure at multiple locations over large areas. We demonstrate this ability using dual-Doppler lidar measurements of flow over two parallel ridges. The data have been collected using two pairs of long-range WindScanner systems operated in a dual-Doppler mode during the Perdigão 2017 measurement campaign. The lidars mapped the flow along the southwest and northeast ridges 80 m above ground level. By analyzing the collected data, we found that for different flow conditions on average wind speeds are 10 % higher over the southwest ridge compared to the northeast ridge. At the southwest ridge, the data shows, depending on the atmospheric conditions, a change of 20 % in wind speed along the ridge. For the measurement period, we have simulated the flow over the site using WRF-LES to compare how well the model can capture wind resources along the ridges. We used two model configurations. In the first configuration, surface drag is based purely on aerodynamic roughness whereas in the second configuration forest canopy drag is also considered. We found that simulated winds are underestimated in WRF-LES runs with forest drag due to an unrealistic forest distribution on the ridge tops. The correlation of simulated and observed winds is, however, improved when the forest parameterization is applied. WRF-LES results without forest drag overestimated the wind resources over the southwest and northeast ridges by 6.5 % and 4.5 % respectively. Overall, this study demonstrates the ability of scanning lidars to map wind resources in complex terrain.

    Abstract. As wind turbines grow larger, the use of flatback airfoils has become standard practice for the root region of the blades. Flatback profiles provide higher lift and reduced sensitivity to soiling at significantly higher drag values. A number of flow control devices has been proposed to improve the performance of flatback profiles. In the present study, the flow past a flatback airfoil at a chord Reynolds number of 1.5 × 106 with and without trailing edge flow control devices is considered. Two different numerical approaches are applied, Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations and Detached Eddy Simulations (DES). The computational predictions are compared to wind tunnel measurements to assess the suitability of each method. The effect of each flow control device on the flow is examined based on the DES results on the finer mesh. Results agree well with the experimental findings and show that a newly proposed flap device outperforms traditional solutions for flatback airfoils. In terms of numerical modelling, the more expensive DES approach is more suitable if the wake frequencies are of interest, but the simplest 2D RANS simulations can provide acceptable load predictions.

    Abstract. Accurate modeling of the dynamic stall remains a challenge for the design and construction of turbine blades and helicopter rotors. At the same time, wind turbines, for instance, are becoming steadily larger, further increasing the demands on their structure and necessitating even more detailed modeling of the forces at hand. The primarily used (semi-)empirical models today have a long research history and are invariably based on phase-averaged data from oscillating blade pitch experiments. However, much potential for more accurate modeling of uncertainties and force peaks is wasted here, since averaging blurs many features of the response signals. Even computational fluid dynamics can help little in this regard, since the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations used in practice cannot account for cycle variations, and scale-resolving models require extremely large amounts of computational resources. This paper presents an approach for a fully stochastic machine learning model that can nevertheless simulate these critical properties. Aerodynamic coefficients are compared with experimental data for different test cases. It is shown that synthetic force profiles which cannot be distinguished from the experimental data visually and are very close to them in the frequency spectrum can be generated. Additionally, attention is drawn to the difficulty of evaluating such a model, as traditional error metrics are of little use. A combination of dynamic time warping and the Earth mover's distance provides a robust solution for this problem.

    Abstract. The technical progress in the development and industrialization of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) over the past decade is significant. Yet, the higher Levelized Cost of Energy of FOWT, compared to onshore wind turbines, is still limiting the market share. One of the reasons for this is the larger motions and loads caused by the rough environmental excitations. Many prototype projects tend to employ more conservative substructure designs to meet the requirements on motion dynamics and structural safety. Another challenge lies in the multidisciplinary nature of a FOWT system, which consists of several strongly coupled subsystems. If these subsystems cannot work in synergy with each other, the overall system performance may not be optimized. Previous research has shown that a well-designed blade pitch controller is able to reduce the motions and structural loads of FOWTs. Nevertheless, due to the negative aerodynamic damping effect, improving the performance by tuning the controller is limited. One of the solutions is adding Tuned Liquid Multi-Column Damper Dampers (TLMCDs), meaning a structural solution to mitigate this limiting factor for the controller performance. It has been found that the additional damping, provided by TLMCDs, is able to improve the platform pitch stability, which allows a larger blade pitch controller bandwidth and thus a better dynamic response. However, if a TLMCD is not designed by taking the whole FOWT system dynamics into account, it may even deteriorate the overall performance. Essentially, an integrated optimization of these subsystems is needed. This paper has developed a Control Co-Design optimization framework for FOWTs installed with TLMCDs. By using the multi-objective optimizer Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, the objective is to optimize the platform, the blade pitch controller and the TLMCD simultaneously. Five free variables characterizing these subsystems are selected and the objective function includes the FOWT's volume of displaced water (displacement), several motion and load indicators. Instead of searching for a unique optimal design, an optimal Pareto surface of the defined objectives is determined. It has been found that the optimization is able to improve the dynamic performance of the FOWT, quantified by motions and loads, when the displacement remains similar. On the other hand, if motions and loads are constant, the displacement of the FOWT can be reduced, which is an important indication of lower manufacturing, transportation and installation costs. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the potential of advanced technologies such as TLMCDs to advance FOWTs for commercial competitiveness.

    Abstract. In contrast to fixed measuring devices, ship-based lidar systems provide highly reliable wind observations within extensive regions. Therefore, this kind of reference dataset provides a great potential for evaluating the performance of mesoscale numerical models in resembling mesoscale flow phenomena such as low-level jets – essential for an optimal development and operation of wind turbines. This paper presents a comparison between numerical output data from two state-of-the-art numerical datasets (ERA5 and NEWA) and the ship-mounted lidar measurements from the NEWA Ferry Lidar Experiment. The comparison was performed along the route covered by the vessel, as well as in specific locations within this route, to better understand the capabilities and limitations of the numerical models to precisely resemble the occurrence and main properties of low-level jets (LLJs) in different locations. The findings of this study show that the non-stationary nature of ship-based lidar measurements allows evaluating the accuracy of the models when retrieving jets' characteristics and occurrence under different temporal and spatial effects. Numerical models underestimate the occurrence of LLJs, and they struggle to accurately describe their main characteristics, with a particularly large underestimation of the falloff. The found results are to be seen in relation to the characteristics of the observations, such as the data availability, the time–position relation of the selected vessel's route, or the profile height limitation, as well as the features of the jets, with a particular relevance of core height and falloff. Additionally, the results illustrate the temporal and spatial shift between the LLJ events detected by the measurements and the models and the potential benefit of considering such deviations when studying LLJs' climatology through numerical modes.

    Abstract. The main obstacles in preliminary design studies or optimization of jacket substructures for offshore wind turbines are high numerical expenses for structural code checks and simplistic cost assumptions. In order to create a basis for fast design evaluations, this work provides the following: first, a jacket model is proposed that covers topology and tube sizing with a limited set of design variables. Second, a cost model is proposed that goes beyond the simple and common mass-dependent approach. And third, the issue of numerical efficiency is addressed by surrogate models for both fatigue and ultimate limit state code checks. In addition, this work shows an example utilizing all models. The outcome can be utilized for preliminary design studies and jacket optimization schemes. It is suitable for scientific and industrial applications.

    Abstract. This wind tunnel study investigates the aerodynamic effects of Mini Gurney flaps (MGFs) and their combination with vortex generators (VGs) on the performance of airfoils and wind turbine rotor blades. VGs are installed on the suction side aiming at stall delay and increased maximum lift. MGFs are thin angle profiles that are attached at the trailing edge in order to increase lift at pre-stall operation. The implementation of both these passive flow control devices is accompanied by a certain drag penalty. The wind tunnel tests are conducted at the Hermann- Föttinger Institut of the Technische Universität Berlin. Lift is determined with a force balance and drag with a wake rake for static angles of attack from −5° to 17° at a constant Reynolds number of 1.5 million. The impact of different MGF heights including 0.25 %, 0.5 % and 1.0 % and an uniform VG height of 1.1 % of the chord length are tested on three airfoils that are characteristic for different sections of large rotor blades. Furthermore, the clean and the tripped baseline cases are considered. In the latter, leading edge transition is forced by means of Zig Zag (ZZ) turbulator tape. The preferred configurations are the smallest MGF on the NACA63(3)618 and the AH93W174 (mid to tip blade region) and the medium sized MGF combined with VGs on the DU97W300 (root to mid region). Next, the experimental lift and drag polar data is imported into the software QBlade in order to design a generic rotor blade. The blade performance is simulated with and without the add-ons based on two case studies. In the first case, the retrofit application on an existing blade mitigates the adverse effects of the ZZ tape. Stall is delayed and the aerodynamic efficiency is partly recovered leading to an improvement of the power curve. In the second case, the new design application allows for the design of a more slender blade while maintaining the power output. Moreover, the alternative blade appears to be more resistant against forced leading edge transition.
