Using disaggregated data on 113 African markets from January 1997 to April 2010, interrelationships between the three variables are analyzed in simultaneous equation models. We find that: (i) a positive feedback exists between food price and violence - higher food prices increase conflict rates within markets and conflict increases food prices; (ii) anomalously dry conditions are associated with increased frequencies of conflict; and (iii) decreased rainfall exerts an indirect effect on conflict through its impact on food prices. These findings suggest that the negative effects of climate variability on conflict can be mitigated by interventions and effective price management in local markets. Creating environments in which food prices are stable and reliable, and markets are accessible and safe, can lower the impacts of both climate change and conflict feedbacks.

Hogg;Abstract In this paper, the possibility of applying a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) via the governor-turbine system of a generating unit is studied for both single-machine and multimachine power systems. The results of analysis and simulation show that the conventional exciter-based PSS can be used in conjunction with the modern high-speed governor to suppress low-frequency oscillations in power systems. This arrangement of stabilizer possesses better robustness to the changes of power system operating conditions. Furthermore, in the environment of a multimachine power system, the control of PSS on the governor of every generator can be locally synthesized to stabilize the whole system, PSS design becomes much easier and simpler.

Here we discuss results from the open-ended questions in the survey, specifically focusing on comments expressing how some respondents felt split in their views of these wind farms, accepting the need for renewable energy while at the same time being concerned about the potential local impact of the wind farms. Building on previous theoretical propositions relating to energy infrastructure opposition, here we apply the concept of cognitive polyphasia in some depth, providing a socio-cognitive account of the internal contradiction of being positively disposed to renewable energy in principle, but concerned about or opposed to specific developments in localities. We distinguish a cognitive polyphasic account of such mixed feelings from cognitive dissonance accounts, and we identify several types of polyphasic representations, providing a basis for further work in other cases. Currently, there are few literature studies detailing the implementations of membranes into WEC design. This paper aims to overcome this by reviewing the developments, material selection and modelling procedures for novel membrane based wave energy converters (mWECs), providing the reader with a comprehensive overview of the current state of the technology. In the first half of this paper, all of the possible WEC implementation areas are reviewed which include the primary mover, power take-off (PTO) and other sub-assembly systems. For the primary mover, the review has identified three main working surface approaches using membranes, these are: air-filled cells, water filled tubes and tethered carpets; which aim to reduce peak loads for enhanced reliability and survivability. In other areas, the PTO of WECs can benefit from using soft dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) which offer a simpler designs compared with conventional mechanical turbomachinery. These have been implemented into the membrane working surface as well as replacing the PTO in existing WEC architectures. In the second half of the paper, a discussion is made on the material selection requirements with a few possible compositions presented. Following this, the potential modelling procedures for these devices is detailed. The device numerical models have altered existing procedures to take into account the non-linearities caused by the membrane interface and membrane PTO damping.

Guerrero;This paper presents a comprehensive review of various techniques employed to enhance the low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of the fixed-speed induction generators (FSIGs)-based wind turbines (WTs), which has a non-negligible 20% contribution of the existing wind energy in the world. As the FSIG-based WT system is directly connected to the grid with no power electronic interfaces, terminal voltage or reactive power output may not be precisely controlled. Thus, various LVRT strategies based on installation of the additional supporting technologies have been proposed in the literature. Although the various individual technologies are well documented, a comparative study of existing approaches has not been reported so far. This paper attempts to fill this void by providing a comprehensive analysis of these LVRT methods for FSIG-based WTs in terms of dynamic performance, controller complexity, and economic feasibility. A novel feature of this paper is to categorize LVRT capability enhancement approaches into three main groups depending on the connection configuration: series, shunt, and series-shunt (hybrid) connections and then discuss their advantages and limitations in detail. For verification purposes, several simulations are presented in MATLAB software to demonstrate and compare the reviewed LVRT schemes. Based on the simulated results, series connection dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) and shunt connection static synchronous compensators (STATCOM) are the highly efficient LVRT capability enhancement approaches.

The Government hopes to leverage private sector investment into DRES as part of new housing projects. The aim of this paper is to assess whether current regulatory and funding frameworks are sufficient to achieve this. The question is explored by drawing on the experience of developers, local authorities, energy utilities and service companies operating in the largest housing growth region in the UK–Thames Gateway. Their experience suggests that the current low intervention approach will be insufficient to generate the shift required in both industries. In order to be more successful economic and regulatory instruments should focus on producers (house-builders and energy providers) rather than consumers (households). Tighter regulation is needed to ensure that producers have a responsibility to install DRES as part of new developments, to enable connection to the grid, to ensure a sustained financial return from investment and revenue is spent on the expansion of new renewable energy infrastructure. This regulatory framework must be under-pinned by substantial funds focused on producers. Greater intervention is needed if DRES is to be included in new housing development.

This paper proposes a releasable KE-based inertial control scheme for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) WPP that differentiates the contributions of the WTGs depending on their stored KE. The proposed KE-based gain scheme aims to make use of the releasable KE in a WPP to raise the frequency nadir. To achieve this, two additional loops for the inertial control are implemented in each DFIG controller: the rate of change of frequency and droop loops. The proposed scheme adjusts the two loop gains in a DFIG controller depending on its rotor speed so that a DFIG operating at a higher rotor speed releases more KE. The performance of the proposed scheme was investigated under various wind conditions. The results clearly indicate that the proposed scheme successfully improves the frequency nadir more than the conventional same gain scheme by releasing more KE stored in a WPP, and it helps all WTGs to ensure stable operation during inertial control by avoiding the rotor speed reaching the minimum speed limit.

IFW alone had a C:N of 30 whereas for WAS it was 5.4 and thus the C:N ratio of the blends fell in that range. Increasing the IFW content in mix improves the methane potential by increasing both the cumulative biogas production and the rate of methane production. Optimum methane yield 239 mL/g VSremoved occurred at a C:N ratio of 15 which was achieved with a blend containing 11 percent (w/w) IFW. As the fraction of IFW in the blend increased, volatile solids (VS) destruction was increased and this led to a reduction in methane yield and amount of production. The highest destruction of volatile solids of 93 percent was achieved at C:N of 20 followed by C:N 30 and 15. A shortened BMP test is adequate for evaluating optimum admixtures.

Our approach to modeling is to build upon an established model of the low voltage electricity network which is tested and proven, by extending it to a generalized energy model. But, in order to address the crucial issues of energy efficiency, additional processes like energy conversion and storage, and further energy carriers, such as gas, heat, etc., besides the traditional electrical one, must be considered. Therefore a more powerful model, provided with enhanced nodes or conversion points, able to deal with multidimensional flows, is being required. This article addresses the issue of modeling a local multi-carrier energy network. This problem can be considered as an extension of modeling a low voltage distribution network located at some urban or rural geographic area. But instead of using an external power flow analysis package to do the power flow calculations, as used in electric networks, in this work we integrate a multiagent algorithm to perform the task, in a concurrent way to the other simulation tasks, and not only for the electric fluid but also for a number of additional energy carriers. As the model is mainly focused in system operation, generation and load models are not developed. Using disaggregated data on 113 African markets from January 1997 to April 2010, interrelationships between the three variables are analyzed in simultaneous equation models. We find that: (i) a positive feedback exists between food price and violence - higher food prices increase conflict rates within markets and conflict increases food prices; (ii) anomalously dry conditions are associated with increased frequencies of conflict; and (iii) decreased rainfall exerts an indirect effect on conflict through its impact on food prices. These findings suggest that the negative effects of climate variability on conflict can be mitigated by interventions and effective price management in local markets. Creating environments in which food prices are stable and reliable, and markets are accessible and safe, can lower the impacts of both climate change and conflict feedbacks.

Hogg;Abstract In this paper, the possibility of applying a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) via the governor-turbine system of a generating unit is studied for both single-machine and multimachine power systems. The results of analysis and simulation show that the conventional exciter-based PSS can be used in conjunction with the modern high-speed governor to suppress low-frequency oscillations in power systems. This arrangement of stabilizer possesses better robustness to the changes of power system operating conditions. Furthermore, in the environment of a multimachine power system, the control of PSS on the governor of every generator can be locally synthesized to stabilize the whole system, PSS design becomes much easier and simpler.

Here we discuss results from the open-ended questions in the survey, specifically focusing on comments expressing how some respondents felt split in their views of these wind farms, accepting the need for renewable energy while at the same time being concerned about the potential local impact of the wind farms. Building on previous theoretical propositions relating to energy infrastructure opposition, here we apply the concept of cognitive polyphasia in some depth, providing a socio-cognitive account of the internal contradiction of being positively disposed to renewable energy in principle, but concerned about or opposed to specific developments in localities. We distinguish a cognitive polyphasic account of such mixed feelings from cognitive dissonance accounts, and we identify several types of polyphasic representations, providing a basis for further work in other cases. Currently, there are few literature studies detailing the implementations of membranes into WEC design. This paper aims to overcome this by reviewing the developments, material selection and modelling procedures for novel membrane based wave energy converters (mWECs), providing the reader with a comprehensive overview of the current state of the technology. In the first half of this paper, all of the possible WEC implementation areas are reviewed which include the primary mover, power take-off (PTO) and other sub-assembly systems. For the primary mover, the review has identified three main working surface approaches using membranes, these are: air-filled cells, water filled tubes and tethered carpets; which aim to reduce peak loads for enhanced reliability and survivability. In other areas, the PTO of WECs can benefit from using soft dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) which offer a simpler designs compared with conventional mechanical turbomachinery. These have been implemented into the membrane working surface as well as replacing the PTO in existing WEC architectures. In the second half of the paper, a discussion is made on the material selection requirements with a few possible compositions presented. Following this, the potential modelling procedures for these devices is detailed. The device numerical models have altered existing procedures to take into account the non-linearities caused by the membrane interface and membrane PTO damping.

Guerrero;This paper presents a comprehensive review of various techniques employed to enhance the low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of the fixed-speed induction generators (FSIGs)-based wind turbines (WTs), which has a non-negligible 20% contribution of the existing wind energy in the world. As the FSIG-based WT system is directly connected to the grid with no power electronic interfaces, terminal voltage or reactive power output may not be precisely controlled. Thus, various LVRT strategies based on installation of the additional supporting technologies have been proposed in the literature. Although the various individual technologies are well documented, a comparative study of existing approaches has not been reported so far. This paper attempts to fill this void by providing a comprehensive analysis of these LVRT methods for FSIG-based WTs in terms of dynamic performance, controller complexity, and economic feasibility. A novel feature of this paper is to categorize LVRT capability enhancement approaches into three main groups depending on the connection configuration: series, shunt, and series-shunt (hybrid) connections and then discuss their advantages and limitations in detail. For verification purposes, several simulations are presented in MATLAB software to demonstrate and compare the reviewed LVRT schemes. Based on the simulated results, series connection dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) and shunt connection static synchronous compensators (STATCOM) are the highly efficient LVRT capability enhancement approaches.

The Government hopes to leverage private sector investment into DRES as part of new housing projects. The aim of this paper is to assess whether current regulatory and funding frameworks are sufficient to achieve this. The question is explored by drawing on the experience of developers, local authorities, energy utilities and service companies operating in the largest housing growth region in the UK–Thames Gateway. Their experience suggests that the current low intervention approach will be insufficient to generate the shift required in both industries. In order to be more successful economic and regulatory instruments should focus on producers (house-builders and energy providers) rather than consumers (households). Tighter regulation is needed to ensure that producers have a responsibility to install DRES as part of new developments, to enable connection to the grid, to ensure a sustained financial return from investment and revenue is spent on the expansion of new renewable energy infrastructure. This regulatory framework must be under-pinned by substantial funds focused on producers. Greater intervention is needed if DRES is to be included in new housing development.

This paper proposes a releasable KE-based inertial control scheme for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) WPP that differentiates the contributions of the WTGs depending on their stored KE. The proposed KE-based gain scheme aims to make use of the releasable KE in a WPP to raise the frequency nadir. To achieve this, two additional loops for the inertial control are implemented in each DFIG controller: the rate of change of frequency and droop loops. The proposed scheme adjusts the two loop gains in a DFIG controller depending on its rotor speed so that a DFIG operating at a higher rotor speed releases more KE. The performance of the proposed scheme was investigated under various wind conditions. The results clearly indicate that the proposed scheme successfully improves the frequency nadir more than the conventional same gain scheme by releasing more KE stored in a WPP, and it helps all WTGs to ensure stable operation during inertial control by avoiding the rotor speed reaching the minimum speed limit.

IFW alone had a C:N of 30 whereas for WAS it was 5.4 and thus the C:N ratio of the blends fell in that range. Increasing the IFW content in mix improves the methane potential by increasing both the cumulative biogas production and the rate of methane production. Optimum methane yield 239 mL/g VSremoved occurred at a C:N ratio of 15 which was achieved with a blend containing 11 percent (w/w) IFW. As the fraction of IFW in the blend increased, volatile solids (VS) destruction was increased and this led to a reduction in methane yield and amount of production. The highest destruction of volatile solids of 93 percent was achieved at C:N of 20 followed by C:N 30 and 15. A shortened BMP test is adequate for evaluating optimum admixtures.

Our approach to modeling is to build upon an established model of the low voltage electricity network which is tested and proven, by extending it to a generalized energy model. But, in order to address the crucial issues of energy efficiency, additional processes like energy conversion and storage, and further energy carriers, such as gas, heat, etc., besides the traditional electrical one, must be considered. Therefore a more powerful model, provided with enhanced nodes or conversion points, able to deal with multidimensional flows, is being required. This article addresses the issue of modeling a local multi-carrier energy network. This problem can be considered as an extension of modeling a low voltage distribution network located at some urban or rural geographic area. But instead of using an external power flow analysis package to do the power flow calculations, as used in electric networks, in this work we integrate a multiagent algorithm to perform the task, in a concurrent way to the other simulation tasks, and not only for the electric fluid but also for a number of additional energy carriers. As the model is mainly focused in system operation, generation and load models are not developed.
