Acidogenic anaerobic fermentation route was explored for the production of bioethanol and volatile fatty acids (VFA) from the press mud (PM) obtained from sugar mill. Slurry was prepared from PM having 10% of total solids and the same was hydrolyzed under acidic thermal conditions. Both press mud slurry (PMS) and pre-treated press mud slurry (PTPMS) was used as feedstock with mixed microbial consortia (MMC) and enriched mixed microbial consortia (EMMC). Mix of bioethanol and VFA were obtained in all the four cases (PMS-MMC, PMS-EMMC, PTPMS-EMC and PTPMS-EMMC), but, bioethanol and VFA yield of 0.04 g/g and 0.27 g/g, respectively obtained from PTPMS with EMMC was found to be comparatively higher. Control experiments carried out with glucose yielded bioethanol and VFA of 0.042 g/g and 0.28 g/g, respectively demonstrating that the organism was using reducible sugars in the feedstock for the generation of bioethanol by simultaneously producing the VFA from COD.

Aware;The distribution feeders often gets overload under peak power demands. This situation is generally countered by load shading, which leads to financial losses to utilities and individual users. This paper presents the new methodology to support the real and reactive power demand through energy storage (ES) to avoid the load shading situation. The compensation of real / reactive power not only provides the voltage profile improvement but also ensures the sustain power to the consumers. A control scheme incorporated also maintains the unity power factor on source side. This relieves the existing distribution network from the extra reactive loading hence the line is having extra capacity for real power transfer to its maximum thermal limit. This additional capacity availability adds more customer base to justify the energy storage investment. The operational features are presented through a simulation of a realistic urban feeder data. The financial analysis is also presented to justify the energy storages with the distribution networks.

Asheesh K. Singh in OpenAIREIndia's steadily expanding populace has made it important to create innovative methods of transportation with electric vehicles (EV's) being the most favoured alternative. The major impediment is the negative impact caused by the improper setup of charging stations on the utility distribution system. This paper takes up the issue of optimal planning (siting and sizing) of charging station (CS) infrastructure in the city of Allahabad, India. It has been labelled as a future smart city under a pilot transportation project started by Government of India. A hybrid algorithm comprising of Genetic Algorithm and improved version of conventional Particle Swarm Optimization (GAIPSO) is employed in this study. The aim is to find optimal location of proposed charging stations in the Allahabad distribution system. PSO further re-optimizes the received sub-optimal solution (site and size of station) which leads to an overall improvement in its functionality and solution. Simulation studies on a real time system of Allahabad city clearly exhibits the superior performance of the aforementioned technique with respect to GA and PSO in terms of improvement in voltage profile and quality of solution obtained for the objective function.

Despite all manner of policy measures introduced by the Government of India, biogas is not widely used in India. This article tries to identify factors that influence the decision to adopt biogas at household level. We examine a conceptual framework empirically in which a household wants to maximize utility from biogas by using the India Human Development Survey (IHDS) I, which is a nationally representative, multi-topic survey. By applying both maximum likelihood and penalized likelihood methods (Firthlogit) of logistic regression on a sample size of almost 10,384 households, it has been found that wealthy people are more likely to adopt biogas compared to the marginalized section of the society. We recommend more inclusive policy measures for the weaker section of the society to create an enabling environment to make it a self-promoting technology.

The influence of various solvents (H2O, CH3OH, and C2H5OH) on product distribution and nature of products during hydrothermal liquefaction of sargassum tenerrimum algae has been examined. Hydrothermal liquefaction was performed using H2O (260, 280 and 300°C) and organic solvents CH3OH and C2H5OH (280°C) for 15min. The use of organic solvents significantly increased the yield of bio-oil. In the case of liquefaction with CH3OH and C2H5OH, the bio-oil yield was 22.8 and 23.8wt.% respectively whereas the bio-oil yield was 16.33wt.% with H2O. GC-MS analysis of the liquid products indicated the presence of various organic compounds including aromatics, nitrogenated and oxygenated compounds and higher selectivity amount of ester compounds were observed in the presence of alcoholic solvents. NMR and FT-IR showed that present of solvents have an effect on the decomposition of sargassum tenerrimum algae.

This has been aptly reflected in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) as one of the major objectives. Despite the availability of diverse and complex set of technologies for water purification, pragmatic and cost-effective use of the same is impeding the use of available sources of water. Hence, in country like India simple low-energy technologies such as solar still are likely to succeed. Solar stills would suffice the basic minimum drinking water requirements of man. Solar stills use sunlight, to kill or inactivate many, if not all, of the pathogens found in water. This paper provides an integrated assessment of the suitability of domestic solar still as a viable safe water technology for India. Also an attempt has been made to critically assess the operational feasibility and costs incurred for using this technology in rural India.

Although these interventions can and do affect the balance between ecological and biological diversity conditions these resources support, and their use to promote economic development. Currently, the unsustainable use of these resources threatens this balance, calling for more sustainable patterns of natural resource use and conservation. The primary responsibility for ensuring the proper balance lies with governments, leading to various policies and programs to preserve natural resources. The ultimate goal is to make the masses aware of natural assets’ importance and encourage their sustainable use. To successfully implement, however, these government practices require public communication and participation, and the full consideration of public opinion at various levels of governance. A predictive analytics framework is proposed for understanding public opinion on government policies to improve sustainable water governance. An integrated policy initiative to balance water resources use and conservation launched by the Indian government served as a test case for applying the framework in an attempt to accurately classify the opinion polarity related to the policy. The conventional feature extraction is applied to pre-processed datasets to extract the relevant features. Subsequently, swarm-based feature selection is applied to filter out optimal features. Lastly, opinion mining and textual analysis are performed to determine the most relevant water management factors that need immediate attention. The proposed framework serves as a policy evaluation strategy in the water management domain. The paper closes with a discussion of the general applicability of the proposed framework.

Six fluid pairs with R22 as the refrigerant and different absorbents: DMA; DMF; DMETEG; DMETrEG; DMEDEG; and NMP are considered. Variations in COP, circulation ratio, percent mass of generated vapour utilised for transfer-tank operation, and minimum generator temperature are compared over a wide range of operating conditions. In general, R22-DMA, R22-DMF, and R22-DMETrEG are preferable for a transfer-tank operated VARS. At high generator temperatures or low condenser temperatures, R22-DMA gives the best overall performance. When the temperatures of the evaporator, absorber, and condenser are high, one may prefer R22-DMF as the working fluid.

Sirajuddin Ahmed in OpenAIREFruit and vegetable marketplace waste (FVMW) is an appealing alternative for energy production and should be utilized as a single substrate in anaerobic digestion (AD)–based biogas plants at an industrial-scale level in subtropical climatic countries. India alone generates 961,000 tons of FVMW annually from the major fruit and vegetable markets (FVMs). Utilization of FVMW to produce useful energy by AD could be helpful in meeting the ever-increasing energy demands of these countries. AD of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) by two-phase systems has revealed good results in terms of stability, performance, and biogas generation; however, innovative approaches like plug flow tank reactor (PFTR) with passive solar heating with no mixing and no energy heating coupled with heat balance models and resistance network–based heat balance models need to be researched for subtropical climatic conditions in order to optimize the economics and energy balance of an AD system. Food waste and slaughter house wastes could be utilized successfully as co-substrates with FVW. C/N ratio is a critical performance parameter in the AD systems involving co-substrates; however, the synergistic relationship among co-substrates and characteristics, viz., macro- and micronutrients of individual co-substrates, must be investigated to improve the AD process. The optimum proportions of co-substrates could be determined by individual substrate characterization, biomethanation potential (BMP), and biodegradation kinetic models, thereby saving time and money as compared with random experimentation. Thermal, ultrasonic, and electrical pre-treatment in addition to physical pre-treatment could be effectively used for pre-treating FVW; however, synergy between co-substrates and pre-treatment method must be researched in order to justify the increased cost in extra pre-treatment.

Bhattacharyya, Subhes in OpenAIRERenewable energy-based off-grid projects have played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s universal electrification effort. The paper, in this context, unravels two crucial and quite interrelated aspects of decentralised off-grid electrification in the country: a) it critically analyses the off-grid electricity sector development and assesses its contribution to the universal electrification in the country and; b) it examines the current set of challenges associated with the off-grid electrification in the larger context of massive grid expansion. A mix of quantitative and qualitative research methods is employed as tools of analysis. The paper brings out several policy-relevant findings. Strategic policy interventions coupled with targeted policy goals, robust community-centric management structures, well-designed credit systems, and well-structured capacity-building initiatives are identified as key leveraging points for the success of off-grid electrification projects. The techno-economic analysis of an existing micro-hydro project reveals that there exist opportunities for more productive use of existing capacity. Grid interconnection of off-grid energy projects emerges as a major challenge beset with a whole gamut of technical, legal, regulatory, financial, and social conundrums. Interestingly, the intensity of such challenges differs across ownership types.
