Wind energy represents one of the leading renewable energy sectors and is considered instrumental in the ongoing decarbonization process. Accurate forecasts are essential for a reliable large-scale wind power integration, allowing efficient operation and maintenance, planning of unit commitment, and scheduling by system operators. However, due to non-stationarity, randomness, and intermittency, forecasting wind power is challenging. This work investigates a multi-modal approach for wind power forecasting by considering turbine-level time series collected from SCADA systems and high-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction maps. A neural architecture based on stacked Recurrent Neural Networks is proposed to process and combine different data sources containing spatio-temporal patterns. This architecture allows combining the local information from the turbine’s internal operating conditions with future meteorological data from the surrounding area. Specifically, this work focuses on multi-horizon turbine-level hourly forecasts for an entire wind farm with a lead time of 90 h. This work explores the impact of meteorological variables on different spatial scales, from full grids to cardinal point features, on wind power forecasts. Results show that a subset of features associated with all wind directions, even when spatially distant, can produce more accurate forecasts with respect to full grids and reduce computation times. The proposed model outperforms the linear regression baseline and the XGBoost regressor achieving an average skill score of 25%. Finally, the integration of SCADA data in the training process improved the predictions allowing the multi-modal neural network to model not only the meteorological patterns but also the turbine’s internal behavior.

One such advantage is the possibility of three-dimensional PD source localization. However, it is necessary to understand the signal propagation and attenuation characteristics in transformers to improve localization. Since transformers are available in a wide range of ratings and geometric sizes, it is necessary to ascertain the similarities and differences in UHF signal characteristics across the different designs. Therefore, in this contribution, the signal attenuation and propagation characteristics of two 300 MVA transformers are analyzed and compared based on experiments. The two transformers have the same rating but different internal structures. It should be noted that the oil is drained out of the transformers for these tests. Additionally, a simulation model of one of the transformers is built and validated based on the experimental results. Subsequently, a simulation model is used to analyze the electromagnetic wave propagation inside the tank. Analysis of the experimental data shows that the distance-dependent signal attenuation characteristics are similar in the case of both transformers and can be well represented by hyperbolic equations, thus indicating that transformers with the same rating have similar attenuation characteristics even if they have different internal structures.

We develop an open-source Python software integrating flexibility needs from Variable Renewable Energies (VREs) in the development of regional energy mixes. It provides a flexible and extensible tool to researchers/engineers, and for education/outreach. It aims at evaluating and optimizing energy deployment strategies with higher shares of VRE, assessing the impact of new technologies and of climate variability and conducting sensitivity studies. Specifically, to limit the algorithm’s complexity, we avoid solving a full-mix cost-minimization problem by taking the mean and variance of the renewable production–demand ratio as proxies to balance services. Second, observations of VRE technologies being typically too short or nonexistent, the hourly demand and production are estimated from climate time series and fitted to available observations. We illustrate e4clim’s potential with an optimal recommissioning-study of the 2015 Italian PV-wind mix testing different climate data sources and strategies and assessing the impact of climate variability and the robustness of the results.

Currently, energy storage systems are considered a key solution when mismatch occurs between energy supply and demand, allowing a more efficient energy deployment and use. The present paper is focused on the study of a latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system based on a packed bed of encapsulated phase change material (PCM) of spherical shape, conceived as an auxiliary component of a micro-grid to be built in a Research Center located in southwestern Sardinia (Italy). The main purpose of this work was to perform numerical simulations for predicting the performance of the TES system, designed to store the surplus thermal energy produced during the weekend by a heat pump fed by a photovoltaic (PV) plant. The stored energy would then be utilized during the weekdays to integrate the air-conditioning system supply. The numerical simulations were based on a one-dimensional (1-D) two-equation transient model, able to return the thermocline profile of the water and the PCM separately. The behavior of the LHTES device during charge and discharge phases was reproduced, as well as during the standby periods. Finally, two characteristic indexes of the PV system were evaluated, to investigate the effect of TES on grid interchanges, self-consumption, and self-sufficiency.

Gas turbine fuel burn for an aircraft engine can be obtained analytically using thermodynamic cycle analysis. For large-diameter ultra-high bypass ratio turbofans, the impact of nacelle drag and propulsion system integration must be accounted for in order to obtain realistic estimates of the installed specific fuel consumption. However, simplified models cannot fully represent the complexity of installation effects. In this paper, we present a method that combines thermodynamic cycle analysis with detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of the installation aerodynamics to obtain the fuel consumption at a given mission point. The flow field and propulsive forces arising in a transport aircraft powered by an ultra-high bypass ratio turbofan at cruise are first examined to characterise the operating conditions and measure the sensitivity to variations of the incidence at transonic flight. The proposed methodology, in which dynamic balance of the vehicle is achieved at each integration point, is then applied along a cruise segment to calculate the cumulative fuel burn and the change in the specific fuel consumption.

In this work, a dynamic analysis describing the charge and discharge process of a supercapacitor for the DC-link between a photovoltaic source and a constant power load is presented. The analysis results in a complete nonlinear and dynamic model that can be used for simulation and control for DC–DC converters, achieving fast recharge times and accurate steady-state voltages in the DC link to avoid overcharging the supercapacitor during low power absorption scenarios. The proposed approach includes parasitic elements for the supercapacitor and efficiency effects on the conversion stage, proposing equations useful for design and control. Stability is also discussed for the charge process of the supercapacitor. Validation of the analytical model is performed by comparison with LTSpice simulation, confirming a good agreement between theory and simulation.

This study explores the combined effects of fuel composition and injection angle on the combustion behavior of an NH3/H2/N2 jet in an air crossflow by means of high-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LESs). Four distinct fuel mixtures derived from ammonia partial decomposition, with hydrogen concentrations ranging from 15% to 60% by volume, are injected at angles of 90° and 75° relative to the crossflow, and at operating conditions frequently encountered in micro-gas turbines. The influence of strain on peak flame temperature and NO formation in non-premixed, counter-flow laminar flames is first examined. Then, the instantaneous flow features of each configuration are analyzed focusing on key turbulent structures, and time-averaged spatial distributions of temperature and NO in the reacting region are provided. In addition, statistical analysis on the formation pathways of NO and H2 is performed, revealing unexpected trends: in particular, the lowest hydrogen content flame yields higher temperatures and NO production due to the enhancement of the ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion chemical mechanism, thus promoting flame stability. As the hydrogen concentration increases, this conversion decreases, leading to lower NO emissions and unburned fuel, particularly at the 75° injection angle. Flames with a 90° injection angle exhibit a more pronounced high-temperature recirculation zone, further driving NO production compared with the 75° cases. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing ammonia–hydrogen fuel blends for high-efficiency, low-emission combustion in gas turbines and other applications, highlighting the need for a careful balance between fuel composition and injection angle.

To satisfy the increasingly stringent emission regulations and a demand for an ever lower fuel consumption, diesel engines have become complex systems with many interacting actuators. As a consequence, these requirements are pushing control and calibration to their limits. The calibration procedure nowadays is still based mainly on engineering experience, which results in a highly iterative process to derive a complete engine calibration. Moreover, automatic tools are available only for stationary operation, to obtain control maps that are optimal with respect to some predefined objective function. Therefore, the exploitation of any leftover potential during transient operation is crucial. This paper proposes an approach to derive a transient feedforward (FF) control system in an automated way. It relies on optimal control theory to solve a dynamic optimization problem for fast transients. A partially physics-based model is thereby used to replace the engine. From the optimal solutions, the relevant information is extracted and stored in maps spanned by the engine speed and the torque gradient. These maps complement the static control maps by accounting for the dynamic behavior of the engine. The procedure is implemented on a real engine and experimental results are presented along with the development of the methodology.

Among the super insulating materials, aerogel has interesting properties: very low thermal conductivity and density, resistance to high temperatures and transparency. It is a rather expensive material, but incentives in the field can improve its economic attractiveness. Starting from this, the thermal behavior of a test building entirely insulated with aerogel panels was investigated through an extended experimental campaign. A dynamic simulation model of a case study building was generated to better comprehend the energy savings obtained through aerogel in terms of energy demand over a whole year. The investigation was completed by computing the carbon and energy payback times of various retrofit strategies through a life cycle assessment approach, as well as by a cost-benefit analysis through a probabilistic financial framework. Compared to conventional insulation materials, aerogel is characterized by a higher energy and carbon payback time, but it guarantees better environmental performance in the whole life cycle. From an economic-financial perspective, the aerogel retrofit is the best in the current tax incentive scenario. However, due to its higher lump-sum investment, aerogel’s net present value is very sensitive to tax deductions, and it is riskier than the best comparable materials in less favorable tax scenarios.

Rape-seed biodiesel is an interesting option to address the problem of decreasing availability of conventional fossil fuels, as well as to reduce the CO2 emissions of internal combustion engines. The present paper describes an experimental campaign carried out on a current production 4-cylinder, 4-stroke naturally aspirated diesel engine, running on standard diesel fuel and on three different blends of rape-seed biodiesel (20%-50%-100%). Performance, emissions and in-cylinder pressure traces were measured at full load. It was found that the influence of rape-seed biodiesel in the fuel blend is not constant at each operating condition. However, as the biodiesel content increases, full load performance tends to drop, in particular brake specific fuel consumption (maximum worsening: +18%), while soot emission goes down. The maximum improvement observed in terms of soot concentration is 37.5%, at 1200 rpm. The combustion analysis revealed that the main differences among the fuels occur in the first phase of combustion: the burn rate is slower for biodiesel blends at low speeds, and faster at high.

Wind energy represents one of the leading renewable energy sectors and is considered instrumental in the ongoing decarbonization process. Accurate forecasts are essential for a reliable large-scale wind power integration, allowing efficient operation and maintenance, planning of unit commitment, and scheduling by system operators. However, due to non-stationarity, randomness, and intermittency, forecasting wind power is challenging. This work investigates a multi-modal approach for wind power forecasting by considering turbine-level time series collected from SCADA systems and high-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction maps. A neural architecture based on stacked Recurrent Neural Networks is proposed to process and combine different data sources containing spatio-temporal patterns. This architecture allows combining the local information from the turbine’s internal operating conditions with future meteorological data from the surrounding area. Specifically, this work focuses on multi-horizon turbine-level hourly forecasts for an entire wind farm with a lead time of 90 h. This work explores the impact of meteorological variables on different spatial scales, from full grids to cardinal point features, on wind power forecasts. Results show that a subset of features associated with all wind directions, even when spatially distant, can produce more accurate forecasts with respect to full grids and reduce computation times. The proposed model outperforms the linear regression baseline and the XGBoost regressor achieving an average skill score of 25%. Finally, the integration of SCADA data in the training process improved the predictions allowing the multi-modal neural network to model not only the meteorological patterns but also the turbine’s internal behavior.

This work explores the impact of meteorological variables on different spatial scales, from full grids to cardinal point features, on wind power forecasts. Results show that a subset of features associated with all wind directions, even when spatially distant, can produce more accurate forecasts with respect to full grids and reduce computation times. The proposed model outperforms the linear regression baseline and the XGBoost regressor achieving an average skill score of 25%. Finally, the integration of SCADA data in the training process improved the predictions allowing the multi-modal neural network to model not only the meteorological patterns but also the turbine’s internal behavior.

However, it is necessary to understand the signal propagation and attenuation characteristics in transformers to improve localization. Since transformers are available in a wide range of ratings and geometric sizes, it is necessary to ascertain the similarities and differences in UHF signal characteristics across the different designs. Therefore, in this contribution, the signal attenuation and propagation characteristics of two 300 MVA transformers are analyzed and compared based on experiments. The two transformers have the same rating but different internal structures. It should be noted that the oil is drained out of the transformers for these tests. Additionally, a simulation model of one of the transformers is built and validated based on the experimental results. Subsequently, a simulation model is used to analyze the electromagnetic wave propagation inside the tank. Analysis of the experimental data shows that the distance-dependent signal attenuation characteristics are similar in the case of both transformers and can be well represented by hyperbolic equations, thus indicating that transformers with the same rating have similar attenuation characteristics even if they have different internal structures.

We develop an open-source Python software integrating flexibility needs from Variable Renewable Energies (VREs) in the development of regional energy mixes. It provides a flexible and extensible tool to researchers/engineers, and for education/outreach. It aims at evaluating and optimizing energy deployment strategies with higher shares of VRE, assessing the impact of new technologies and of climate variability and conducting sensitivity studies. Specifically, to limit the algorithm’s complexity, we avoid solving a full-mix cost-minimization problem by taking the mean and variance of the renewable production–demand ratio as proxies to balance services. Second, observations of VRE technologies being typically too short or nonexistent, the hourly demand and production are estimated from climate time series and fitted to available observations. We illustrate e4clim’s potential with an optimal recommissioning-study of the 2015 Italian PV-wind mix testing different climate data sources and strategies and assessing the impact of climate variability and the robustness of the results.

Currently, energy storage systems are considered a key solution when mismatch occurs between energy supply and demand, allowing a more efficient energy deployment and use. The present paper is focused on the study of a latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system based on a packed bed of encapsulated phase change material (PCM) of spherical shape, conceived as an auxiliary component of a micro-grid to be built in a Research Center located in southwestern Sardinia (Italy). The main purpose of this work was to perform numerical simulations for predicting the performance of the TES system, designed to store the surplus thermal energy produced during the weekend by a heat pump fed by a photovoltaic (PV) plant. The stored energy would then be utilized during the weekdays to integrate the air-conditioning system supply. The numerical simulations were based on a one-dimensional (1-D) two-equation transient model, able to return the thermocline profile of the water and the PCM separately. The behavior of the LHTES device during charge and discharge phases was reproduced, as well as during the standby periods. Finally, two characteristic indexes of the PV system were evaluated, to investigate the effect of TES on grid interchanges, self-consumption, and self-sufficiency.

Gas turbine fuel burn for an aircraft engine can be obtained analytically using thermodynamic cycle analysis. For large-diameter ultra-high bypass ratio turbofans, the impact of nacelle drag and propulsion system integration must be accounted for in order to obtain realistic estimates of the installed specific fuel consumption. However, simplified models cannot fully represent the complexity of installation effects. In this paper, we present a method that combines thermodynamic cycle analysis with detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of the installation aerodynamics to obtain the fuel consumption at a given mission point. The flow field and propulsive forces arising in a transport aircraft powered by an ultra-high bypass ratio turbofan at cruise are first examined to characterise the operating conditions and measure the sensitivity to variations of the incidence at transonic flight. The proposed methodology, in which dynamic balance of the vehicle is achieved at each integration point, is then applied along a cruise segment to calculate the cumulative fuel burn and the change in the specific fuel consumption.

In this work, a dynamic analysis describing the charge and discharge process of a supercapacitor for the DC-link between a photovoltaic source and a constant power load is presented. The analysis results in a complete nonlinear and dynamic model that can be used for simulation and control for DC–DC converters, achieving fast recharge times and accurate steady-state voltages in the DC link to avoid overcharging the supercapacitor during low power absorption scenarios. The proposed approach includes parasitic elements for the supercapacitor and efficiency effects on the conversion stage, proposing equations useful for design and control. Stability is also discussed for the charge process of the supercapacitor. Validation of the analytical model is performed by comparison with LTSpice simulation, confirming a good agreement between theory and simulation.

This study explores the combined effects of fuel composition and injection angle on the combustion behavior of an NH3/H2/N2 jet in an air crossflow by means of high-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LESs). Four distinct fuel mixtures derived from ammonia partial decomposition, with hydrogen concentrations ranging from 15% to 60% by volume, are injected at angles of 90° and 75° relative to the crossflow, and at operating conditions frequently encountered in micro-gas turbines. The influence of strain on peak flame temperature and NO formation in non-premixed, counter-flow laminar flames is first examined. Then, the instantaneous flow features of each configuration are analyzed focusing on key turbulent structures, and time-averaged spatial distributions of temperature and NO in the reacting region are provided. In addition, statistical analysis on the formation pathways of NO and H2 is performed, revealing unexpected trends: in particular, the lowest hydrogen content flame yields higher temperatures and NO production due to the enhancement of the ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion chemical mechanism, thus promoting flame stability. As the hydrogen concentration increases, this conversion decreases, leading to lower NO emissions and unburned fuel, particularly at the 75° injection angle. Flames with a 90° injection angle exhibit a more pronounced high-temperature recirculation zone, further driving NO production compared with the 75° cases. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing ammonia–hydrogen fuel blends for high-efficiency, low-emission combustion in gas turbines and other applications, highlighting the need for a careful balance between fuel composition and injection angle.

To satisfy the increasingly stringent emission regulations and a demand for an ever lower fuel consumption, diesel engines have become complex systems with many interacting actuators. As a consequence, these requirements are pushing control and calibration to their limits. The calibration procedure nowadays is still based mainly on engineering experience, which results in a highly iterative process to derive a complete engine calibration. Moreover, automatic tools are available only for stationary operation, to obtain control maps that are optimal with respect to some predefined objective function. Therefore, the exploitation of any leftover potential during transient operation is crucial. This paper proposes an approach to derive a transient feedforward (FF) control system in an automated way. It relies on optimal control theory to solve a dynamic optimization problem for fast transients. A partially physics-based model is thereby used to replace the engine. From the optimal solutions, the relevant information is extracted and stored in maps spanned by the engine speed and the torque gradient. These maps complement the static control maps by accounting for the dynamic behavior of the engine. The procedure is implemented on a real engine and experimental results are presented along with the development of the methodology.

Moreover, automatic tools are available only for stationary operation, to obtain control maps that are optimal with respect to some predefined objective function. Therefore, the exploitation of any leftover potential during transient operation is crucial. This paper proposes an approach to derive a transient feedforward (FF) control system in an automated way. It relies on optimal control theory to solve a dynamic optimization problem for fast transients. A partially physics-based model is thereby used to replace the engine. From the optimal solutions, the relevant information is extracted and stored in maps spanned by the engine speed and the torque gradient. These maps complement the static control maps by accounting for the dynamic behavior of the engine. The procedure is implemented on a real engine and experimental results are presented along with the development of the methodology.

Among the super insulating materials, aerogel has interesting properties: very low thermal conductivity and density, resistance to high temperatures and transparency. It is a rather expensive material, but incentives in the field can improve its economic attractiveness. Starting from this, the thermal behavior of a test building entirely insulated with aerogel panels was investigated through an extended experimental campaign. A dynamic simulation model of a case study building was generated to better comprehend the energy savings obtained through aerogel in terms of energy demand over a whole year. The investigation was completed by computing the carbon and energy payback times of various retrofit strategies through a life cycle assessment approach, as well as by a cost-benefit analysis through a probabilistic financial framework. Compared to conventional insulation materials, aerogel is characterized by a higher energy and carbon payback time, but it guarantees better environmental performance in the whole life cycle. From an economic-financial perspective, the aerogel retrofit is the best in the current tax incentive scenario. However, due to its higher lump-sum investment, aerogel’s net present value is very sensitive to tax deductions, and it is riskier than the best comparable materials in less favorable tax scenarios.

Rape-seed biodiesel is an interesting option to address the problem of decreasing availability of conventional fossil fuels, as well as to reduce the CO2 emissions of internal combustion engines. The present paper describes an experimental campaign carried out on a current production 4-cylinder, 4-stroke naturally aspirated diesel engine, running on standard diesel fuel and on three different blends of rape-seed biodiesel (20%-50%-100%). Performance, emissions and in-cylinder pressure traces were measured at full load. It was found that the influence of rape-seed biodiesel in the fuel blend is not constant at each operating condition. However, as the biodiesel content increases, full load performance tends to drop, in particular brake specific fuel consumption (maximum worsening: +18%), while soot emission goes down. The maximum improvement observed in terms of soot concentration is 37.5%, at 1200 rpm. The combustion analysis revealed that the main differences among the fuels occur in the first phase of combustion: the burn rate is slower for biodiesel blends at low speeds, and faster at high.
