Svend Bram in OpenAIREAbstract Emissions and efficiency of a pellet boiler (40 kW) at nominal load were compared with emissions and efficiency at reduced load, while fired with six biomass pellets. The pellets include reed canary grass ( Phalaris arundinacea ), pectin waste from citrus shells ( Citrus reticulata ), sunflower husk ( Helianthus annuus ), peat, wheat straw ( Triticum aestivum ) and wood pellets. The measurements of emissions comprised of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), sulphur oxides (SO x ) and flue dust mass concentrations (using DIN plus and isokinetic sampling techniques). Emissions varied as a function of operational loads, for each type of pellets. The CO emissions were insignificant with reed canary grass (RCG), citrus pectin waste (CPW) and straw pellets at nominal load, however, at reduced load same pellets emitted 1.9, 4.0 and 7.4 times higher CO than wood pellets, respectively. Peat pellets emitted maximum CO at nominal load (4221.1 mgNm −3 , 12.6 times higher than wood pellets) however; at reduced load CO emission was insignificant. The highest NO x emissions were reported with CPW, which were 3.4 and 4.6 times higher than wood pellets at nominal load and reduced load, respectively. Dust emissions were highest with sunflower husk and lowest with RCG pellets, at both operational modes. The best performance was reported with wood pellets, followed by RCG and pectin pellets, however, wood pellets combustion emitted 1.7 and 2.0 times higher dust DIN plus than RCG at nominal and reduced loads, respectively. Not only fuel specific combustion optimization but also operational load specific optimization is essential for efficient use of agro-pellets in this type of boilers.

Thierry Van Cutsem in OpenAIREA reduced-order, “grey-box” model of an active distribution network, intended for dynamic simulations of the transmission system, is derived. The network hosts inverter-based generators as well as static and motor loads, whose dynamic parameters are affected by uncertainty. This issue is addressed using Monte-Carlo simulations. The parameters of the equivalent are adjusted to match as closely as possible the average of the randomized responses, while their dispersion is accounted for through the weights of the weighted least-square minimization. A procedure is used to remove from the identification the parameters with negligible impact. To avoid over-fitting, the equivalent is tuned for multiple large-disturbance simulations. A recursive procedure is used to select the smallest possible subset of disturbances involved in the least-square minimization. Simulation results with a 75-bus MV test-system are reported. They show that the equivalent is able to reproduce with good accuracy the discontinuous controls of inverter-based generators, such as reactive current injection and tripping.

Persoons, T. in OpenAIREAbstract This paper discusses the minimization of the fuel consumption of a gasoline engine through dynamic optimization. The minimization uses a mean value model of the powertrain and vehicle. This model has two state variables: the pressure in the engine intake manifold and the engine speed. The control input is the throttle valve angle. The model is identified on a universal engine dynamometer. Optimal state and control trajectories are calculated using Bock’s direct multiple shooting method, implemented in the software MUSCOD-II. The developed approach is illustrated both in simulation and experimentally for a generic test case where a vehicle accelerates from 1100 rpm to 3700 rpm in 30 s . The optimized trajectories yield minimal fuel consumption. The experiments show that a linear engine speed trajectory yields an extra fuel consumption of 13 % when compared to the optimal trajectory. It is shown that, with a simple model, a significant amount of fuel can be saved without loss of the fun-to-drive.

Some of these targeted emission reductions could result from a switch from coal-fired to gas-fired electricity generation. The focus in this work lies on Western Europe, with the presence of the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS). For the switching to occur, several conditions have to be fulfilled. First, an economical incentive must be present, i.e. a sufficiently high European Union Allowance (EUA) price together with a sufficiently low natural gas price. Second, the physical potential for switching must exist, i.e. at a given load, there must remain enough power plants not running to make switching possible. This paper investigates what possibilities exist for switching coal-fired plants for gas-fired plants, dependent on the load level (the latter condition above). A fixed allowance cost and a variable natural gas price are assumed. The method to address GHG emission reduction potentials is first illustrated in a methodological case. Next, the GHG emission reduction potentials are addressed for several Western European countries together with a relative positioning of their electricity generation. GHG emission reduction potentials are also compared with simulation results. GHG emission reduction potentials tend to be significant. The Netherlands have a very widespread switching zone, so GHG emission reduction is practically independent of electricity generation. Other counties, like Germany, Spain and Italy could reduce GHG emissions significantly by switching. With an allowance cost following the switch level of a 50% efficient gas-fired plant and a 40% efficient coal-fired plant in the summer season (like in 2005), the global GHG emission reduction (in the electricity generating sector) for the eight modeled zones could amount to 19%.

The model will assess the advantages of hybrid vehicles in terms of energy consumption, network power and voltage variations, line current and losses; and will help sizing and designing a supercapacitor based energy storage system (ESS) for both on-board, and stationary applications. The proposed modeling needs to allow the ESS sizing according to the objective that needs to be achieved, being braking energy recovery, voltage drop compensation and peak power shaving the most common goals of ESS use in hybrid vehicles. The needed power and energy levels will vary in function of the vehicle features and the driving cycle followed. This all can be determined by the quasi-static simulation tool to ease the design process. Another objective of the modeling tool is to evaluate the behaviour of the vehicle power flow controller, which manages the power from/to the ESS in function of the state of several variables.

Berger;Abstract A heterogeneous magnesium oxide catalyst is a good alternative for homogeneous catalysts for the transesterification of alkyl esters for the production of fine-chemicals as well as for the production of biodiesel. The transesterification of ethyl acetate with methanol was used as a model reaction to simulate fine-chemical production in a batch slurry reactor at industrial conditions. The transesterification of triolein with methanol to methyl oleate was chosen to simulate continuous production of biodiesel from rapeseed oil. A kinetic model based on a three-step ‘Eley–Rideal’ type of mechanism in the liquid phase was used in both process simulations. The transesterification reaction occurs between methanol adsorbed on a magnesium oxide free basic site and ethyl acetate or the glyceride from the liquid phase. Methanol adsorption is assumed to be rate-determining in both processes. Activity coefficients were required to account for the significant non-ideality of the reaction mixture in the simulations of both processes. The simulations indicate that a production of 500 tonnes methyl acetate per year can be reached at ambient temperature in a batch reactor of 10 m 3 containing 5 kg of MgO catalyst, and that a continuous production of 100,000 tonnes of biodiesel per year can be achieved at 323 K in a continuous stirred reactor of 25 m 3 containing 5700 kg of MgO catalyst. Although various assumptions and simplifications were made in these explorative simulations the assumptions concerning the reaction kinetics used, the results indicate that for both processes a heterogeneous magnesium oxide catalyst shows promising potential as a viable industrial scale alternative.

G.J. Heynderickx in OpenAIREAbstract A Gas–Solid Vortex Reactor (GSVR), in literature also referred to as Rotating Fluidized Bed in Static Geometry (RFB-SG), is a promising reactor type for Process Intensification (PI) with respect to reactor volume reduction. Although replacing gravitational by centrifugal force has been considered since the seventies, the hydrodynamics of the reactor flow and the bed behavior remain largely unknown. In the present work experiments have been carried out in a cold flow GSVR with diameter of 0.54 m, length of 0.1 m and 36 inlet slots of 2 mm. Gas injection velocities of 55–111 m/s and particles with densities of 950–1800 kg/m 3 and diameters of 1–2 mm have been applied. Depending on solids density, particle diameter and gas injection velocity the bed behavior can be considered as stable, semi-stable or unstable. For semi-stable and stable flow regimes the effect of the above process conditions on the maximum solids capacity was investigated. With increasing solids density, the bed stability considerably decreases, while the maximum solids capacity increases. By increasing the gas injection velocity, both the bed stability and the maximum solids capacity increase. Once bed stability is accomplished, a further increase of the gas injection velocity does not affect the maximum solids capacity. With increasing particle diameter, the bed stability decreases while the maximum solids capacity increases.

Supercritical heat transfer has already been applied for decades, as it has several benefits such as improved thermal efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle. Accurate knowledge about supercritical heat transfer and pressure drop of the different working fluids is required to design the heat exchangers and other components used in these systems. In literature, supercritical heat transfer of water and CO2 has already been widely investigated, the research involving refrigerants (for their application in low-temperature heat conversion systems) is however rather scarce. This paper gives an overview of the existing research on supercritical heat transfer. An overview of the applications, general characteristics and the main findings for water and other fluids are summarized. Due to the sharp variations in thermophysical properties, heat transfer and pressure drop cannot be accurately predicted on a single-phase based approach only. An in-detail review of the current research and status of knowledge about supercritical heat transfer of refrigerants is presented. The effect of the different investigated refrigerants and operating parameters on heat transfer and pressure drop, both for heating and cooling applications, is discussed. The remaining gaps in literature are highlighted, which include studies involving larger diameter tubes, horizontal flow, cooling heat transfer and pressure drop estimations and creation of a wider database for a more general correlation development and measurements on newer refrigerants (with low Global Warming Potentials) as these will become increasingly important in the near future. In addition, advances in numerical research should focus on development of suitable turbulence models. Overall, further improving the basic understanding of the fluid structure and occurrence of deteriorated heat transfer, as well as forming reliable models for the thermophysical properties are key in future efforts.
