H.;The application of compliant filament seals to jet engine secondary air systems has been shown to yield significant improvements in specific fuel consumption and improved emissions. One such technology, the leaf seal, provides comparable leakage performance to the brush seal but offers higher axial rigidity, significantly reduced radial stiffness and improved compliance with the rotor. Investigations were carried out on the Engine Seal Test Facility at the University of Oxford into the behavior of a leaf seal prototype at high running speeds. The effects of pressure, speed and cover plate geometry on leakage and torque are quantified. Early publications on leaf seals showed that air-riding at the contact interface might be achieved. Results are presented which appear to confirm that air-riding is taking place. Consideration is given to a possible mechanism for torque reduction at high rotational speeds.

Abstract Azo dyes constitute 60%–70% of commercially used dyes and are complex, carcinogenic, and mutagenic pollutants that negatively impact soil composition, water bodies, flora, and fauna. Conventional azo dye degradation techniques have drawbacks such as high production and maintenance costs, use of hazardous chemicals, membrane clogging, and sludge generation. Constructed wetland–microbial fuel cells (CW–MFCs) offer a promising sustainable approach for the bio-electrodegradation of azo dyes from textile wastewater. CW–MFCs harness the phytodegradation capabilities of wetland plants like Azolla, water hyacinth, and Ipomoea, along with microalgae such as Nostoc, Oscillatoria, Chlorella, and Anabaena, to break down azo dyes into aromatic amines. These intermediates are then reduced to CO2 and H2O by microalgae in the fuel cells while simultaneously generating electricity. CW–MFCs offer advantages including low cost, sustainability, and use of renewable energy. The valorization of the resulting algal and plant biomass further enhances the sustainability of this approach, as it can be used for biofuel production, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and bio-composting. Implementing CW–MFCs as a tertiary treatment step in textile industries aligns with the circular economy concept and contributes to achieving several sustainable development goals.

The supply and use of chips, pellets and briquettes was studied by internal and external comparisons to show competitiveness and improvement options. The results show fewer differences within the Sida process chain designs but larger distinctions to compared alternative biofuels such as wood or Miscanthus pellets. A major finding is that Sida process chains cause lower environmental impacts in comparison with alternative biofuels. The study identified hot spots within the Sida process chains and starting points for further improvement. A sensitivity analysis of important parameters, such as specific yield or heating values was performed. Because there are no similar investigations on the environmental impact of Sida used as a biogenic solid fuel to date this manuscript presents first results. So far, the results indicate that Sida provides a more sustainable option for the use of biomass in combustion processes in relation to environmental impacts.

It is an empirical fact that the severity of gastrointestinal discomfort induced by alcohol abuse is subject to interindividual variation. The aim of this study was to determine whether genetic polymorphism in alcohol dehydrogenase 3 (ADH3) and cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), important first-pass enzymes in the metabolism of ethanol, predispose to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms in alcoholics, Blood samples were obtained from 92 adult alcoholics admitted for detoxification. The samples were analyzed for genetic polymorphism in ADH3 and CYP2E1 by polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses. During an interview on the first day of hospital admission, patient characteristics and gastrointestinal symptoms in the week before admission were assessed. A total of 75 of 92 alcoholics (83%) reported symptoms: 66 patients had upper gastrointestinal symptoms (72%), 70 patients had lower gastrointestinal symptoms (76%), and 59 patients reported alarming symptoms (64%). Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms less often abused beer in comparison to those without gastrointestinal symptoms (P = 0.05). The numbers of patients with the homozygous y1y1 genotype, the heterozygous y1y2 genotype, and the homozygous y2y2 genotype in ADH3 who reported gastrointestinal symptoms were 20 (83%), 34 (76%), and 15 (88%), respectively. The number of patients with the heterozygous c1c2 CYP2E1 genotype (5%) and the heterozygous DC CYP2E1 genotype (14%) was low and also unrelated to gastrointestinal symptoms. Our data suggest that the ethanol concentrations of the consumed beverages, and not interindividual variations in the activities of first-pass alcohol-metabolizing enzymes, are associated with gastrointestinal symptoms in alcoholics.

[EN] Fuel cell (FC) technology has been identified as a technically attractive solution to decarbonize the transportation sector, especially for heavy-duty vehicles. In this context, the industry and the scientific community are in need of advanced fuel cell systems (FCS) models that are able to replicate real-world operating conditions. Due to the scarcity of said models in the open literature, this study aimed to develop a comprehensive methodology to calibrate and validate multi-physics dynamic FCS models. Therefore, the key contribution of this paper is the detailed description of the calibration process for each component and the calibration order. The specific focus here was to accurately describe the behavior of the FC stack as well as the cathode, anode, and cooling circuits of the balance of plant. The model was calibrated with the aid of experimental data from a Toyota Mirai FC electric vehicle, which was predominantly retrieved from the vehicle¿s Controller Area Network (CAN) bus system thereby negating the need for major intrusion into the powertrain system. The validation process was deemed successful with the model being able to truthfully replicate the characteristics of the FC vehicle operated on the World-wide harmonized Light duty Test Cycle (WLTC) 3b and US06 driving cycle. The time-resolved physical parameters such as the cathode pressure, mass flow, or the FC stack temperature were captured with high fidelity, while the overall performance parameters such as the H2 consumption in the stack and the system, and the compressor energy consumption were predicted accurately with a deviation lower than 0.47%, 1.75% and 1.89% with respect to the experimental data, respectively. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) deployment in future wireless networks has been recently considered a promising radio access technology to enhance spectral efficiency (SE). However, gain in SE comes always with the cost of energy efficiency (EE). In this paper, we investigate the SE and EE tradeoff in downlink NOMA with the consideration of quality of service (QoS) requirements based on three population-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs): multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) and strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm-2 (SPEA2). The tradeoff is optimized and Pareto optimal solutions are obtained through MOEAs. The effectiveness of the algorithms is evaluated based on the hypervolume metric and the capability of solving multi-objective optimization problems. Simulation results reveal that SPEA2 outperforms NSGA-II and MOPSO. Furthermore, NSGA-II is the loser among all algorithms in terms of finding Pareto optimal results.

ABSTRACTIntraguild interactions among carnivores have long held the fascination of ecologists. Ranging from competition to facilitation and coexistence, these interactions and their complex interplay influence everything from species persistence to ecosystem functioning. Yet, the patterns and pathways of such interactions are far from understood in tropical forest systems, particularly across countries in the Global South. Here, we examined the determinants and consequences of competitive interactions between dholes Cuon alpinus and the two large felids (leopards Panthera pardus and tigers Panthera tigris) with which they most commonly co‐occur across Asia. Using a combination of traditional and novel data sources (N = 118), we integrate information from spatial, temporal, and dietary niche dimensions. These three species have faced catastrophic declines in their extent of co‐occurrence over the past century; most of their source populations are now confined to Protected Areas. Analysis of dyadic interactions between species pairs showed a clear social hierarchy. Tigers were dominant over dholes, although pack strength in dholes helped ameliorate some of these effects; leopards were subordinate to dholes. Population‐level spatio‐temporal interactions assessed at 25 locations across Asia did not show a clear pattern of overlap or avoidance between species pairs. Diet‐profile assessments indicated that wild ungulate biomass consumption by tigers was highest, while leopards consumed more primate and livestock prey as compared to their co‐predators. In terms of prey offtake (ratio of wild prey biomass consumed to biomass available), the three species together harvested 0.4–30.2% of available prey, with the highest offtake recorded from the location where the carnivores reach very high densities. When re‐examined in the context of prey availability and offtake, locations with low wild prey availability showed spatial avoidance and temporal overlap among the carnivore pairs, and locations with high wild prey availability showed spatial overlap and temporal segregation. Based on these observations, we make predictions for 40 Protected Areas in India where temporally synchronous estimates of predator and prey densities are available. We expect that low prey availability will lead to higher competition, and in extreme cases, to the complete exclusion of one or more species. In Protected Areas with high prey availability, we expect intraguild coexistence and conspecific competition among carnivores, with spill‐over to forest‐edge habitats and subsequent prey‐switching to livestock. We stress that dhole–leopard–tiger co‐occurrence across their range is facilitated through an intricate yet fragile balance between prey availability, and intraguild and conspecific competition. Data gaps and limitations notwithstanding, our study shows how insights from fundamental ecology can be of immense utility for applied aspects like large predator conservation and management of human–carnivore interactions. Our findings also highlight potential avenues for future research on tropical carnivores that can broaden current understanding of intraguild competition in forest systems of Asia and beyond.

The supply and usage of energetic cofactors in metabolism is a central concern for systems metabolic engineering, particularly in case of energy intensive products. One of the most important parameters for systems wide balancing of energetic cofactors is the ATP requirement for biomass formation YATP/Biomass. Despite its fundamental importance, YATP/Biomass values for non-fermentative organisms are still rough estimates deduced from theoretical considerations. For the first time, we present an approach for the experimental determination of YATP/Biomass using comparative 13C metabolic flux analysis (13C MFA) of a wild type strain and an ATP synthase knockout mutant. We show that the energetic profile of a cell can then be deduced from a genome wide stoichiometric model and experimental maintenance data. Particularly, the contributions of substrate level phosphorylation (SLP) and electron transport phosphorylation (ETP) to ATP generation become available which enables the overall energetic efficiency of a cell to be characterized. As a model organism, the industrial platform organism Corynebacterium glutamicum is used. C. glutamicum uses a respiratory type of energy metabolism, implying that ATP can be synthesized either by SLP or by ETP with the membrane-bound F1FO-ATP synthase using the proton motive force (pmf) as driving force. The presence of two terminal oxidases, which differ in their proton translocation efficiency by a factor of three, further complicates energy balancing for this organism. By integration of experimental data and network models, we show that in the wild type SLP and ETP contribute equally to ATP generation. Thus, the role of ETP in respiring bacteria may have been overrated in the past. Remarkably, in the genome wide setting 65% of the pmf is actually not used for ATP synthesis. However, it turns out that, compared to other organisms C. glutamicum still uses its energy budget rather efficiently.

Abstract Aims Incorporating biofertilizers, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AM) fungal inoculants, into vineyard management practices may enhance vine growth and reduce environmental impact. Here, we evaluate the effects of commercially available and local AM fungal inoculants on the growth, root colonization, and nutrient uptake of wine grapes (Vitis vinifera) when planted in a field soil substrate. Methods and results In a greenhouse experiment, young wine grapes were planted in a field soil substrate and inoculated with one of three commercially available mycorrhizal inoculant products, or one of two locally collected whole soil inoculants. After 4 months of growth, inoculated vines showed no differences in plant biomass, colonization of roots by AM fungi, or foliar macronutrient concentrations compared to uninoculated field soil substrate. However, vines grown with local inoculants had greater shoot biomass than vines grown with mycorrhizal inoculant products. Conclusions Although effects from inoculations with AM fungi varied by inoculant type and source, inoculations may not improve young vine performance in field soils with a resident microbial community.

In this study, a phase fault detection algorithm is developed by employing the envelope detector method. The proposed method diagnoses faults among phases and defines fault areas in the incoming signal. The designed algorithm consists of three steps: analytical signal conversion, complex magnitude, and fault detection. Initially, an analytical signal is obtained from the incoming power signal to determine the instantaneous amplitude and phase of the signal. A complex magnitude operation is applied to analytical signals to display changes in amplitude. On the basis of the threshold values specified by the user, the last step identifies the distortion signal in terms of the type of error and size. The proposed method is tested with realistically simulated substation power signal data and real power system data from the Grid Event Signature Library. The obtained results revealed that the proposed method detects distortions accurately.

H.;The application of compliant filament seals to jet engine secondary air systems has been shown to yield significant improvements in specific fuel consumption and improved emissions. One such technology, the leaf seal, provides comparable leakage performance to the brush seal but offers higher axial rigidity, significantly reduced radial stiffness and improved compliance with the rotor. Investigations were carried out on the Engine Seal Test Facility at the University of Oxford into the behavior of a leaf seal prototype at high running speeds. The effects of pressure, speed and cover plate geometry on leakage and torque are quantified. Early publications on leaf seals showed that air-riding at the contact interface might be achieved. Results are presented which appear to confirm that air-riding is taking place. Consideration is given to a possible mechanism for torque reduction at high rotational speeds.

Abstract Azo dyes constitute 60%–70% of commercially used dyes and are complex, carcinogenic, and mutagenic pollutants that negatively impact soil composition, water bodies, flora, and fauna. Conventional azo dye degradation techniques have drawbacks such as high production and maintenance costs, use of hazardous chemicals, membrane clogging, and sludge generation. Constructed wetland–microbial fuel cells (CW–MFCs) offer a promising sustainable approach for the bio-electrodegradation of azo dyes from textile wastewater. CW–MFCs harness the phytodegradation capabilities of wetland plants like Azolla, water hyacinth, and Ipomoea, along with microalgae such as Nostoc, Oscillatoria, Chlorella, and Anabaena, to break down azo dyes into aromatic amines. These intermediates are then reduced to CO2 and H2O by microalgae in the fuel cells while simultaneously generating electricity. CW–MFCs offer advantages including low cost, sustainability, and use of renewable energy. The valorization of the resulting algal and plant biomass further enhances the sustainability of this approach, as it can be used for biofuel production, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and bio-composting. Implementing CW–MFCs as a tertiary treatment step in textile industries aligns with the circular economy concept and contributes to achieving several sustainable development goals.

The supply and use of chips, pellets and briquettes was studied by internal and external comparisons to show competitiveness and improvement options. The results show fewer differences within the Sida process chain designs but larger distinctions to compared alternative biofuels such as wood or Miscanthus pellets. A major finding is that Sida process chains cause lower environmental impacts in comparison with alternative biofuels. The study identified hot spots within the Sida process chains and starting points for further improvement. A sensitivity analysis of important parameters, such as specific yield or heating values was performed. Because there are no similar investigations on the environmental impact of Sida used as a biogenic solid fuel to date this manuscript presents first results. So far, the results indicate that Sida provides a more sustainable option for the use of biomass in combustion processes in relation to environmental impacts.

It is an empirical fact that the severity of gastrointestinal discomfort induced by alcohol abuse is subject to interindividual variation. The aim of this study was to determine whether genetic polymorphism in alcohol dehydrogenase 3 (ADH3) and cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), important first-pass enzymes in the metabolism of ethanol, predispose to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms in alcoholics, Blood samples were obtained from 92 adult alcoholics admitted for detoxification. The samples were analyzed for genetic polymorphism in ADH3 and CYP2E1 by polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses. During an interview on the first day of hospital admission, patient characteristics and gastrointestinal symptoms in the week before admission were assessed. A total of 75 of 92 alcoholics (83%) reported symptoms: 66 patients had upper gastrointestinal symptoms (72%), 70 patients had lower gastrointestinal symptoms (76%), and 59 patients reported alarming symptoms (64%). Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms less often abused beer in comparison to those without gastrointestinal symptoms (P = 0.05). The numbers of patients with the homozygous y1y1 genotype, the heterozygous y1y2 genotype, and the homozygous y2y2 genotype in ADH3 who reported gastrointestinal symptoms were 20 (83%), 34 (76%), and 15 (88%), respectively. The number of patients with the heterozygous c1c2 CYP2E1 genotype (5%) and the heterozygous DC CYP2E1 genotype (14%) was low and also unrelated to gastrointestinal symptoms. Our data suggest that the ethanol concentrations of the consumed beverages, and not interindividual variations in the activities of first-pass alcohol-metabolizing enzymes, are associated with gastrointestinal symptoms in alcoholics.

[EN] Fuel cell (FC) technology has been identified as a technically attractive solution to decarbonize the transportation sector, especially for heavy-duty vehicles. In this context, the industry and the scientific community are in need of advanced fuel cell systems (FCS) models that are able to replicate real-world operating conditions. Due to the scarcity of said models in the open literature, this study aimed to develop a comprehensive methodology to calibrate and validate multi-physics dynamic FCS models. Therefore, the key contribution of this paper is the detailed description of the calibration process for each component and the calibration order. The specific focus here was to accurately describe the behavior of the FC stack as well as the cathode, anode, and cooling circuits of the balance of plant. The model was calibrated with the aid of experimental data from a Toyota Mirai FC electric vehicle, which was predominantly retrieved from the vehicle¿s Controller Area Network (CAN) bus system thereby negating the need for major intrusion into the powertrain system. The validation process was deemed successful with the model being able to truthfully replicate the characteristics of the FC vehicle operated on the World-wide harmonized Light duty Test Cycle (WLTC) 3b and US06 driving cycle. The time-resolved physical parameters such as the cathode pressure, mass flow, or the FC stack temperature were captured with high fidelity, while the overall performance parameters such as the H2 consumption in the stack and the system, and the compressor energy consumption were predicted accurately with a deviation lower than 0.47%, 1.75% and 1.89% with respect to the experimental data, respectively. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) deployment in future wireless networks has been recently considered a promising radio access technology to enhance spectral efficiency (SE). However, gain in SE comes always with the cost of energy efficiency (EE). In this paper, we investigate the SE and EE tradeoff in downlink NOMA with the consideration of quality of service (QoS) requirements based on three population-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs): multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) and strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm-2 (SPEA2). The tradeoff is optimized and Pareto optimal solutions are obtained through MOEAs. The effectiveness of the algorithms is evaluated based on the hypervolume metric and the capability of solving multi-objective optimization problems. Simulation results reveal that SPEA2 outperforms NSGA-II and MOPSO. Furthermore, NSGA-II is the loser among all algorithms in terms of finding Pareto optimal results.

ABSTRACTIntraguild interactions among carnivores have long held the fascination of ecologists. Ranging from competition to facilitation and coexistence, these interactions and their complex interplay influence everything from species persistence to ecosystem functioning. Yet, the patterns and pathways of such interactions are far from understood in tropical forest systems, particularly across countries in the Global South. Here, we examined the determinants and consequences of competitive interactions between dholes Cuon alpinus and the two large felids (leopards Panthera pardus and tigers Panthera tigris) with which they most commonly co‐occur across Asia. Using a combination of traditional and novel data sources (N = 118), we integrate information from spatial, temporal, and dietary niche dimensions. These three species have faced catastrophic declines in their extent of co‐occurrence over the past century; most of their source populations are now confined to Protected Areas. Analysis of dyadic interactions between species pairs showed a clear social hierarchy. Tigers were dominant over dholes, although pack strength in dholes helped ameliorate some of these effects; leopards were subordinate to dholes. Population‐level spatio‐temporal interactions assessed at 25 locations across Asia did not show a clear pattern of overlap or avoidance between species pairs. Diet‐profile assessments indicated that wild ungulate biomass consumption by tigers was highest, while leopards consumed more primate and livestock prey as compared to their co‐predators. In terms of prey offtake (ratio of wild prey biomass consumed to biomass available), the three species together harvested 0.4–30.2% of available prey, with the highest offtake recorded from the location where the carnivores reach very high densities. When re‐examined in the context of prey availability and offtake, locations with low wild prey availability showed spatial avoidance and temporal overlap among the carnivore pairs, and locations with high wild prey availability showed spatial overlap and temporal segregation. Based on these observations, we make predictions for 40 Protected Areas in India where temporally synchronous estimates of predator and prey densities are available. We expect that low prey availability will lead to higher competition, and in extreme cases, to the complete exclusion of one or more species. In Protected Areas with high prey availability, we expect intraguild coexistence and conspecific competition among carnivores, with spill‐over to forest‐edge habitats and subsequent prey‐switching to livestock. We stress that dhole–leopard–tiger co‐occurrence across their range is facilitated through an intricate yet fragile balance between prey availability, and intraguild and conspecific competition. Data gaps and limitations notwithstanding, our study shows how insights from fundamental ecology can be of immense utility for applied aspects like large predator conservation and management of human–carnivore interactions. Our findings also highlight potential avenues for future research on tropical carnivores that can broaden current understanding of intraguild competition in forest systems of Asia and beyond.

The supply and usage of energetic cofactors in metabolism is a central concern for systems metabolic engineering, particularly in case of energy intensive products. One of the most important parameters for systems wide balancing of energetic cofactors is the ATP requirement for biomass formation YATP/Biomass. Despite its fundamental importance, YATP/Biomass values for non-fermentative organisms are still rough estimates deduced from theoretical considerations. For the first time, we present an approach for the experimental determination of YATP/Biomass using comparative 13C metabolic flux analysis (13C MFA) of a wild type strain and an ATP synthase knockout mutant. We show that the energetic profile of a cell can then be deduced from a genome wide stoichiometric model and experimental maintenance data. Particularly, the contributions of substrate level phosphorylation (SLP) and electron transport phosphorylation (ETP) to ATP generation become available which enables the overall energetic efficiency of a cell to be characterized. As a model organism, the industrial platform organism Corynebacterium glutamicum is used. C. glutamicum uses a respiratory type of energy metabolism, implying that ATP can be synthesized either by SLP or by ETP with the membrane-bound F1FO-ATP synthase using the proton motive force (pmf) as driving force. The presence of two terminal oxidases, which differ in their proton translocation efficiency by a factor of three, further complicates energy balancing for this organism. By integration of experimental data and network models, we show that in the wild type SLP and ETP contribute equally to ATP generation. Thus, the role of ETP in respiring bacteria may have been overrated in the past. Remarkably, in the genome wide setting 65% of the pmf is actually not used for ATP synthesis. However, it turns out that, compared to other organisms C. glutamicum still uses its energy budget rather efficiently.

Abstract Aims Incorporating biofertilizers, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AM) fungal inoculants, into vineyard management practices may enhance vine growth and reduce environmental impact. Here, we evaluate the effects of commercially available and local AM fungal inoculants on the growth, root colonization, and nutrient uptake of wine grapes (Vitis vinifera) when planted in a field soil substrate. Methods and results In a greenhouse experiment, young wine grapes were planted in a field soil substrate and inoculated with one of three commercially available mycorrhizal inoculant products, or one of two locally collected whole soil inoculants. After 4 months of growth, inoculated vines showed no differences in plant biomass, colonization of roots by AM fungi, or foliar macronutrient concentrations compared to uninoculated field soil substrate. However, vines grown with local inoculants had greater shoot biomass than vines grown with mycorrhizal inoculant products. Conclusions Although effects from inoculations with AM fungi varied by inoculant type and source, inoculations may not improve young vine performance in field soils with a resident microbial community.

In this study, a phase fault detection algorithm is developed by employing the envelope detector method. The proposed method diagnoses faults among phases and defines fault areas in the incoming signal. The designed algorithm consists of three steps: analytical signal conversion, complex magnitude, and fault detection. Initially, an analytical signal is obtained from the incoming power signal to determine the instantaneous amplitude and phase of the signal. A complex magnitude operation is applied to analytical signals to display changes in amplitude. On the basis of the threshold values specified by the user, the last step identifies the distortion signal in terms of the type of error and size. The proposed method is tested with realistically simulated substation power signal data and real power system data from the Grid Event Signature Library. The obtained results revealed that the proposed method detects distortions accurately.
