Antonio Testa in OpenAIREThe paper deals with a fuzzy logic based strategy managing the power flows in an hybrid generation plant. Such a plant works in island mode and is composed of: a wind turbine, a photovoltaic generator and a fuel cell/electrolyzer energy storage system. The performances of the proposed strategy are evaluated by simulation in different operating conditions. To this purpose some performance indexes are considered, such as: the frequency deviation, the stability of the DC bus voltage and the AC voltage total harmonic distortion. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed power management strategy, providing the ground for the practical realization of a fuzzy logic based control system. Moreover the efficiency of the developed fuzzy logic controller is compared to that of a more conventional controller taking into the fuel cell H 2 consumption, the amount of H 2 generated from the Electrolyzer and the final battery state of charge (SOC).

Marco Ferraro in OpenAIREAbstract Nowadays, resilient grids meet growing interest for their capability of supplying critical load even in case of power fault coming from grid disturbance and natural disasters. To do this, such grids involve redundant apparatus and predictive control schemes. For high value services, unexpected system unavailability is source of economic losses to the providers. Hence, beside the internal energy storage devices, such plants had better to have redundancy of energy sources (e.g. electrical grid and natural gas network) and tailored power flows control strategies still valid even in the case of energy shortage. On the other hand, distributed storage resources is attracting growing interest to support the power networks in terms of both resiliency and flexibility facing the impact of generation from the Renewable Energy Sources. In this work, a power supply system controller based on Artificial Intelligence was developed and simulated to wisely operate the storage resources to serve the ICT equipment as Uninterruptible Power Supply (above all in case of emergency) as fundamental mission. Secondly, the investigation assessed the capability, to offer ancillary services to the power network increasing its resiliency measured system response in terms of survival time during grid faults and restoration transient time to recover initial service level.

Marco Ferraro in OpenAIREAbstract According to recent literature and technical analyses, used batteries from electric vehicles can still be used, before the final treatment at the end-of-life, in stationary applications that are usually less stressing than the automotive ones. In this framework, a circular economy inspired pathway is emerging between the building and the transportation sector, generally called “second life” of batteries. Used batteries from electric vehicles can be re-used in residential buildings together with renewable electricity generation technologies to improve the matching between the highly variable electricity generation from renewables and the electricity demand in buildings. This study aims to contribute to the assessment of the environmental sustainability of using battery storage systems for stationary applications made of used batteries in substitution of new batteries in a life cycle perspective. The analysis is performed considering an expanded circular system that includes both the functions provided in buildings (provide the electricity required in a residential building for a specific time frame) and in the transportation sector (provide electricity needed for driving until the battery capacity reached about 80% of the rated capacity). The study shows that reusing used batteries as stationary storage systems in residential buildings can enhance the overall environmental sustainability of the two systems considered. In particular, the environmental impacts decrease of a percentage ranging from around -4% (in cumulative energy demand) to -17% (in abiotic depletion potential). The examined strategy can contribute to initiate the transition towards a circular and low-carbon economy.

Giovanni Tine in OpenAIREThe integration of distributed storage systems (DSSs) at users and prosumers level can significantly contribute to energy efficiency and increase profits from renewable energy exploitation, thanks to suitable scheduling of charging and discharging periods. On the other hand, to preserve network stability and secure operation, Distribution Systems Operators (DSOs) are interested in DSSs control and cooperation with the grid. In this framework this work proposes a simple monitoring and management system for DSSs scheduling and its integration in a distributed measurement and control system architecture for smart grids. In the paper the proposed algorithm is tested on a simple case study at home level; the obtained results show its feasibility in addressing both users/prosumers economic interests and DSOs needs for grid secure operation.

Maurizio Cellura in OpenAIREThis study assesses the energy and environmental impacts of sodium/nickel chloride batteries, one of the emerging battery technologies for energy storage and smart grids. The analysis was conducted using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology according to the standards of the ISO 14040 series. The study system was one sodium/nickel cell battery providing electric storage for a photovoltaic system, and the manufacturing, operation, and end-of-life steps were analysed. The results indicated that the operation step has the greatest energy impact (55-70% of the total), with the manufacturing step, particularly cell manufacturing, contributing the greatest environmental impact (>60% of the total). This paper makes two original contributions: 1) it presents one of the first LCA analyses of sodium/nickel chloride batteries with the aim of identifying the energy and environmental impacts of this technology; 2) it provides a set of energy and environmental outcomes identifying the "hot spots" of the selected technology that must be carefully considered to upgrade the current efficiency and sustainability of electric storage device standards. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Francesco Guarino in OpenAIREAbstract The concept of Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB), as a grid-connected building that generates as much energy as it uses over a given period, has been developing through policies and research agendas during the last decade as a contribution towards the decarbonization of the building sector. However, since the most applicable and widely used renewable energy supply options are non-programmable, the large-scale NZEBs diffusion into the existing power grids can seriously affect their stability having a relapse on operation costs and environmental impacts. In this context, the study aims at performing the design of the energy systems to be used in the case-study through a wide numbers of point of views, including the grid interaction, global warming potential, and different design alternatives such as using fuel cells and renewable energy generation systems and drawing lessons learned to be saved for similar buildings. A novel approach for developing for NZEBs, combining load match and grid interaction indicators with an environmental impact indicator, is proposed. The proposed design approach allows for the quantification of the power grid interaction and environmental impact (in terms of Global Warming Potential) aiming to find trade-offs between the opposing tendencies of building energy performances and the need to limit the embodied carbon within building envelope and systems. The design approach has been used to investigate the performances of a NZEB prototype with the aim to explore the effectiveness of the solution sets used in the current design (only Photovoltaic system) and plan different solutions (batteries and fuel cells system) for the future ones. For the base case, even though the overall PV energy generation (8069 kWhe) in a year surpasses the electricity consumption (5290 kWhe), on a yearly base only the 29% of the PV generation is used on-site. Hence, the assessed indicators show clearly how installing a PV system merely able to cover the energy uses on a yearly net base (or even slightly oversized) will have stress implications on the power grid. On the other hand, the use of batteries at the building scale largely decreases the reliance on power grid when not programmable renewable sources are present. Moreover, if coupled to the right size of the on-site generation systems, the storage system could increases the environmental benefits arising from the renewable energy technologies (the GHG emission reaches its minimum value of 0.92·103 kg CO2eq/year, with a reduction of the 50.4% if compared to the base case) for a storage capacity of 20 kWh and a PV system nominal power of 4.56 kW). Fuel cells guarantee a good load match at high energy efficiency, furthermore, a high installed power of fuel cells is not required to obtain high load cover factor values. On the other hand, since the specific CO2eq emission per unit of energy of the fuel cells are high, the CO2eq emissions are always greater than those of the base case if the system is equipped with a fuel cell system. Therefore, future research will have to focus on the eco-design of fuel cells with to reduce environmental impacts of these systems in a life cycle perspective.

Marco Ferraro in OpenAIREThe concept of load matching refers to the simultaneous occurrence of loads and generation in buildings: it can be increased and optimised with modifications on both the energy demand and generation, but its pre-requisite is to guarantee passive energy efficiency. In the Mediterranean areas, a major challenge in new buildings is the increasing overheating even during mildly hot seasons. Ventilative cooling can be a potential solution to such issues and have an impact on load match in buildings and their grid interaction. The study analyses the potential of ventilative cooling to improve the load match in three different case studies in Italy. Ventilative cooling proved viable in moderately improving the load match and in more effectively reducing import of electricity from the grid under the appropriate climatic\indoor conditions. In addition, the thermal-physical features, energy generation and consumption characteristics of the buildings are a source of large variability in the results. Increases in the load cover factor through natural ventilative cooling among the case studies range from 0.5% (high-performance building, low cooling share) to 5% (prefabricated module, high cooling share on the total); energy import is reduced effectively from 1% up to 22% in the case of a Sicilian residential building.

Marco Ferraro in OpenAIREThis work aims at the development of a simulation tool to optimize the design of a hybrid fuel cell/battery system to supply ICT equipment. In the framework of the ONSITE European project, which deals with a hybrid (fuel cell and batteries) RBS (Radio Base Stations) supply system, a modeling activity is carried out to optimize the system operations. The developed algorithms separately implement a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell system and a high temperature Sodium Nickel Chloride battery for design purpose and collect them in a unique model for devices interaction (i.e. power production, storage, and control). Moreover, a Computational Fluid Dynamics battery model is developed to analyse the heat transfer while the SOFC stack generates excessive heat during operation and outlet hot gases can be effectively used. Since the SNC batteries need heat during charging process (to maintain their operating temperature) and, conversely, the reactions are exothermic in discharge mode, the described approach aims at combining SNC batteries with micro-CHP unit to optimize the energy flows. The implementation requires several alternative designs and variant analysis to secure proper operation of battery and power generation unit. The model developed and shown in this paper is a dedicated tool for the simulation of the hybrid system proposed and for the optimal designing of each main sub component. © 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC.
