However, the poor thermal properties of air requires better thermal designs to keep the temperature rise within the allowable industry limits to avoid premature switch degradation. This publication focuses on the temperature rise of load break switches (LBS) of different designs. A LBS with flexible braid was found to have considerably higher temperature rise than a design with the sliding contact. The study has shown that a stripped switch (with only the current path) can be used together with empirical determined heat transfer coefficients in a first approach for predicting the temperature rise of the critical parts of the LBS. Aluminum construction elements functioning as heat sinks had a huge impact on the temperature rise of the LBS, and design elements that can utilize this might be important when replacing SF6 with air.

Oil sludge from various objects of oil fields in Kazakhstan (Mangystau region) has been studied. The possibilities of using oil (after its separation from oil sludge by bioremidiation) as a partial substitute for bitumen base in the production of modified bitumen are considered. The main physical and mechanical characteristics of modified bitumen are determined. The results confirm that the modified bitumen prepared with oil sludge and oil separated by bioremiation method meets the requirements for polymer-bitumen binder to Kazakhstan standards and is suitable for the production of modified bitumen in its physico-chemical characteristics.

As a major energy consumer and a leader of the global low-carbon transition, China is characterized by a distinctive socio-political regime. An array of grand strategies to transform its coal-dominant energy structure have been initiated to ameliorate deteriorating environmental crises in particular and materialize a low-carbon transition in general. Based on extensive evidence, this article incorporates the energy justice framework into the analysis of an ongoing energy transition project in rural Northern China. It contributes to the related research in three dimensions. First, empirically, it demonstrates that the coal-to-gas heating transition project has been swamped with social injustices; the absence of measures to address these would lead this mega-project to profound failure. Second, theoretically, it illustrates that the concerns of justice are even more paramount in an authoritarian context where policy processes are characterized by strong political-administrative intervention and the pursuit of efficiency at all cost. In light of this, it stresses the indispensable role of restorative justice as a core tenet in achieving energy justice in authoritarian socio-political contexts, such as China. Third, this study advocates expanding the evaluation parameters of authoritarian environmentalism to include social consequences.

Many methods for converting microalgae to biofuel have been proposed; however, an economical and energetically feasible route for algal fuel production is yet to be found. This paper presents a review on the comparison of the most promising conversion pathways of microalgae to liquid fuel: hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), wet extraction and non-destructive extraction. The comparison is based on important assessment parameters of product quality and yield, nutrient recovery, GHG emissions, energy and the cost associated with the production of fuel from microalgae, in order to better understand the pros and cons of each method. It was found that the HTL pathway produces more oil than the wet extraction pathway; however, higher concentrations of unwanted components are present in the HTL oil produced. Less nutrients (N and P) can be recovered in HTL compared to wet extraction. HTL consumes more fossil energy and generates higher GHG emissions than wet extraction, while the production cost of fuel from HTL pathway is lower than wet extraction pathway. There is considerable uncertainty in the comparison of the energy consumption and economics of the HTL pathway and the wet extraction pathway due to different scenarios analysed in the assessment studies. To be able to appropriately compare methodologies, the conversion methods should be analysed from growth to upgradation of oil utilising sufficiently similar assumptions and scenarios. Based on the data in available literature, wet oil extraction is the more appropriate system for biofuel production than HTL. However, the potential of alternative extraction/conversion technologies, such as, non-destructive extraction, need to be further assessed.

The influence of ethanol on the degradation kinetics of linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) and organic matter was investigated using batch experiments with different initial LAS concentrations (8.3 mg L-1 to 66.9 mg L-1) and biomass immobilized on sand. Data were fitted with a substrate inhibition model. Concentrations of 2.4 mg LAS L-1 and 18.9 mg LAS L-1 (without and with ethanol) provided the maximum LAS utilization rate by the biomass (Sbm). For LAS degradation, ethanol addition favored a lower decrease in the specific substrate utilization rate (robs), even at the LAS concentration usually reported as inhibitory (> 14.4 mg L-1). For organic matter degradation, robs was higher with ethanol. Higher biomass differentiation was observed at higher LAS concentrations. With ethanol, microbial selection occurred at LAS concentrations near Sbm. At higher LAS concentrations, the dominance and diversity values did not change significantly with ethanol, whereas without ethanol, their behaviors were irregular.

The vehicle will generate an amount of current while the electric vehicle just starting to regeneratively brake. In order to avoid the impact of high current on the traction battery, a novel electrohydraulic hybrid electric vehicle has been proposed. The main power source is supplied by the electric drive system, and the hydraulic system performs the auxiliary drive system that fully exerts the advantages of the electric drive system and the hydraulic drive system. A proper regenerative braking control strategy is presented, and the control parameters are determined by the fuzzy optimization algorithm. The simulation analysis built the model through the united simulation of AMESim and MATLAB/Simulink. The results illustrated that the optimized control strategy can reduce battery consumption by 1.22% under NEDC-operating conditions.

Monitoring of two insulator strings in the tower is achieved by use of a pair of optical-fiber sensors that detect samples of the leakage current waveforms and transmit those samples to a processing module via an optical link. It is observed that leakage current during washing may reach high peak levels, and the effectiveness of the washing can be inferred by the degree of leakage current after drying of the insulator strings. Direct monitoring of the leakage current can thus be used as an important guideline for proper washing procedures during this type of intervention as well as for determining the effectiveness of the procedure.

AbstractAn arc‐furnace model consisting of non‐linear, time‐varying resistance, realized by the Alternative Transients Program (ATP), is presented in this paper. It is shown that the model is appropriate for flicker investigation in electrical networks supplying arc furnaces, constituting a valid alternative to the linear arc modelling realized by amplitude modulation of voltage generators. Block diagram of the procedure for ATP modelling of the nonlinear, time‐varying arc resistance, dynamic voltage‐current characteristic of the furnace electric arc, voltage and current arc waveforms and characteristic curves of an arc furnace, obtained by ATP simulation, are presented, referring to circuit parameters taken from an actual plant and to a sinusoidal law for arc‐length time variation. Aflickermeter ATP simulation is realized to derive equivalent voltage‐variation values in agreement with the actual flicker measurements.

Samples of 128 respondents were randomly selected from four local government areas of Ogun State. Data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire. Percentages were used for data analysis. Majority of the respondents were married (91%) with a mean age of 50 years. Most of the respondents (86.7%) used firewood for cooking, the preference of the utilization of firewood over other alternatives was due to non-availability of other sources (40%) and availability of firewood (33%). Some perceived health effects on the respondents were discomfort caused by the smoke from the firewood (𝑥 ̅ = 2.81) and eyes irritation (= 2.53). The study recommended alternative energy sources that are with lesser health hazards be made readily available at subsidized rate in the rural areas since this was the major attractive driving force for the use of firewood.

While different types of assessment methods exist, they either do not consider design goals and/or are not general enough to integrate new and innovative energy concepts. Furthermore, existing assessment methods focus mostly on the building and system level while ignoring more detailed data. With the availability and affordability of more detailed measured data, the increased number of measured data points requires a structure to organize these data. This paper presents the Energy Performance Comparison Methodology (EPCM), which enables the identification of performance problems based on a comparison of measured data and simulated data representing design goals. The EPCM is based on an interlinked building object hierarchy that structures the detailed performance data from a spatial and mechanical perspective. This research is developed and tested on multiple case studies that provide real-life context and more generality compared to single case studies.

As a major energy consumer and a leader of the global low-carbon transition, China is characterized by a distinctive socio-political regime. An array of grand strategies to transform its coal-dominant energy structure have been initiated to ameliorate deteriorating environmental crises in particular and materialize a low-carbon transition in general. Based on extensive evidence, this article incorporates the energy justice framework into the analysis of an ongoing energy transition project in rural Northern China. It contributes to the related research in three dimensions. First, empirically, it demonstrates that the coal-to-gas heating transition project has been swamped with social injustices; the absence of measures to address these would lead this mega-project to profound failure. Second, theoretically, it illustrates that the concerns of justice are even more paramount in an authoritarian context where policy processes are characterized by strong political-administrative intervention and the pursuit of efficiency at all cost. In light of this, it stresses the indispensable role of restorative justice as a core tenet in achieving energy justice in authoritarian socio-political contexts, such as China. Third, this study advocates expanding the evaluation parameters of authoritarian environmentalism to include social consequences.

Many methods for converting microalgae to biofuel have been proposed; however, an economical and energetically feasible route for algal fuel production is yet to be found. This paper presents a review on the comparison of the most promising conversion pathways of microalgae to liquid fuel: hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), wet extraction and non-destructive extraction. The comparison is based on important assessment parameters of product quality and yield, nutrient recovery, GHG emissions, energy and the cost associated with the production of fuel from microalgae, in order to better understand the pros and cons of each method. It was found that the HTL pathway produces more oil than the wet extraction pathway; however, higher concentrations of unwanted components are present in the HTL oil produced. Less nutrients (N and P) can be recovered in HTL compared to wet extraction. HTL consumes more fossil energy and generates higher GHG emissions than wet extraction, while the production cost of fuel from HTL pathway is lower than wet extraction pathway. There is considerable uncertainty in the comparison of the energy consumption and economics of the HTL pathway and the wet extraction pathway due to different scenarios analysed in the assessment studies. To be able to appropriately compare methodologies, the conversion methods should be analysed from growth to upgradation of oil utilising sufficiently similar assumptions and scenarios. Based on the data in available literature, wet oil extraction is the more appropriate system for biofuel production than HTL. However, the potential of alternative extraction/conversion technologies, such as, non-destructive extraction, need to be further assessed.

The influence of ethanol on the degradation kinetics of linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) and organic matter was investigated using batch experiments with different initial LAS concentrations (8.3 mg L-1 to 66.9 mg L-1) and biomass immobilized on sand. Data were fitted with a substrate inhibition model. Concentrations of 2.4 mg LAS L-1 and 18.9 mg LAS L-1 (without and with ethanol) provided the maximum LAS utilization rate by the biomass (Sbm). For LAS degradation, ethanol addition favored a lower decrease in the specific substrate utilization rate (robs), even at the LAS concentration usually reported as inhibitory (> 14.4 mg L-1). For organic matter degradation, robs was higher with ethanol. Higher biomass differentiation was observed at higher LAS concentrations. With ethanol, microbial selection occurred at LAS concentrations near Sbm. At higher LAS concentrations, the dominance and diversity values did not change significantly with ethanol, whereas without ethanol, their behaviors were irregular.

The vehicle will generate an amount of current while the electric vehicle just starting to regeneratively brake. In order to avoid the impact of high current on the traction battery, a novel electrohydraulic hybrid electric vehicle has been proposed. The main power source is supplied by the electric drive system, and the hydraulic system performs the auxiliary drive system that fully exerts the advantages of the electric drive system and the hydraulic drive system. A proper regenerative braking control strategy is presented, and the control parameters are determined by the fuzzy optimization algorithm. The simulation analysis built the model through the united simulation of AMESim and MATLAB/Simulink. The results illustrated that the optimized control strategy can reduce battery consumption by 1.22% under NEDC-operating conditions.

Monitoring of two insulator strings in the tower is achieved by use of a pair of optical-fiber sensors that detect samples of the leakage current waveforms and transmit those samples to a processing module via an optical link. It is observed that leakage current during washing may reach high peak levels, and the effectiveness of the washing can be inferred by the degree of leakage current after drying of the insulator strings. Direct monitoring of the leakage current can thus be used as an important guideline for proper washing procedures during this type of intervention as well as for determining the effectiveness of the procedure.

AbstractAn arc‐furnace model consisting of non‐linear, time‐varying resistance, realized by the Alternative Transients Program (ATP), is presented in this paper. It is shown that the model is appropriate for flicker investigation in electrical networks supplying arc furnaces, constituting a valid alternative to the linear arc modelling realized by amplitude modulation of voltage generators. Block diagram of the procedure for ATP modelling of the nonlinear, time‐varying arc resistance, dynamic voltage‐current characteristic of the furnace electric arc, voltage and current arc waveforms and characteristic curves of an arc furnace, obtained by ATP simulation, are presented, referring to circuit parameters taken from an actual plant and to a sinusoidal law for arc‐length time variation. Aflickermeter ATP simulation is realized to derive equivalent voltage‐variation values in agreement with the actual flicker measurements.

Samples of 128 respondents were randomly selected from four local government areas of Ogun State. Data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire. Percentages were used for data analysis. Majority of the respondents were married (91%) with a mean age of 50 years. Most of the respondents (86.7%) used firewood for cooking, the preference of the utilization of firewood over other alternatives was due to non-availability of other sources (40%) and availability of firewood (33%). Some perceived health effects on the respondents were discomfort caused by the smoke from the firewood (𝑥 ̅ = 2.81) and eyes irritation (= 2.53). The study recommended alternative energy sources that are with lesser health hazards be made readily available at subsidized rate in the rural areas since this was the major attractive driving force for the use of firewood.

While different types of assessment methods exist, they either do not consider design goals and/or are not general enough to integrate new and innovative energy concepts. Furthermore, existing assessment methods focus mostly on the building and system level while ignoring more detailed data. With the availability and affordability of more detailed measured data, the increased number of measured data points requires a structure to organize these data. This paper presents the Energy Performance Comparison Methodology (EPCM), which enables the identification of performance problems based on a comparison of measured data and simulated data representing design goals. The EPCM is based on an interlinked building object hierarchy that structures the detailed performance data from a spatial and mechanical perspective. This research is developed and tested on multiple case studies that provide real-life context and more generality compared to single case studies.
