Solar energy is one of the most affordable and clean renewable energy source in the world. Hence, the solar energy prediction is an inevitable requirement in order to get the maximum solar energy during the day time and to increase the efficiency of solar energy systems. For this purpose, this paper predicts the daily total energy generation of an installed photovoltaic system using the Naive Bayes classifier. In the prediction process, one-year historical dataset including daily average temperature, daily total sunshine duration, daily total global solar radiation and daily total photovoltaic energy generation parameters are used as the categorical-valued attributes. By means of the Naive Bayes application, the sensitivity and the accuracy measures are improved for the photovoltaic energy prediction and the effects of other solar attributes on the photovoltaic energy generation are evaluated.

Due to the variations in weather conditions, solar power integration to the electricity grid at a high penetration rate can cause a threat for the grid stability. Therefore, it is required to predict the solar radiation parameter in order to ensure the quality and the security of the grid. In this study, initially, a 1-h time series model belong to the solar radiation parameter is created for multi-period predictions. Afterwards, autoregressive moving average (ARMA) and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models are compared in terms of the goodness-of-fit value produced by the log-likelihood function. As a result of determining the best statistical models in multi-period predictions, one-period, two-period and three-period ahead predictions are carried out for the solar radiation parameter in a comprehensive way. Many feasible comparisons have been made for the solar radiation prediction.

A new auxiliary circuit is designed and added to two cell interleaved boost converter to reduce the switching losses. The proposed auxiliary circuit is implemented using only one auxiliary switch and a minimum number of passive components without an important increase in the cost and complexity of the converter. The main advantage of this auxiliary circuit is that it not only provides zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) for the main switches but also provides soft switching for the auxiliary switch and diodes. Though all semiconductor devices operate under soft switching, they do not have any additional voltage and current stresses. The proposed converter operates successfully in soft switching operation mode for a wide range of input voltage level and the load. In addition, it has advantages such as fewer structure complications, lower cost and ease of control. In the study, the transition modes for describing the behavior of the proposed converter in one switching period are described. A prototype with 600 W output power, 50 kHz/cell switching frequency, input line voltage of 110–220 V rms and an output voltage of 400 V dc has been implemented. Analysis, design and the control circuitry are also presented in the paper.

The potential of fractal geometry to increase heat transfer and the ability of the parabolic dish to concentrate solar rays form the basis of the proposed design for increasing the efficiency. In the study, the thermal and hydrodynamic behaviors of the proposed 3-row, 4-row and 5-row parabolic collectors were investigated comprehensively. Using theoretical modeling and experimental results, the performances of the proposed parabolic dish-based toroidal fractal solar collectors were evaluated and compared via numerical simulation methods. After the experimental studies of the 3-row toroidal fractal collector, the analysis studies were completed using the ANSYS-Fluent program. Then, simulations were carried out for other toroidal solar collectors using the results of these experimental studies. As a result of the converging numerical analyzes, the radiative, hydrodynamic and thermal analysis results of the toroidal absorbers in 3-row, 4-row and 5-row structures integrated with the parabolic dish were compared. In the temperature distribution analysis, it was observed that the parabolic dish effectively focuses on the sun rays and provides a gradual temperature increase of approximately 21 K for the fractal collector. It is observed that 96.84% convergence was achieved between the experimental and numerical results.

Van was always known as a sun city throughout history with the name of TUSBA. It has an average of 300 sunny days a year, an altitude of 1727 m, and an average daily temperature of 9.85°C. Considering how the need for sustainable and renewable energy sources - and knowledge over them - constantly increases, this SPS was built to reveal the true solar potential of the campus area of Yuzuncu Yil University of the city of Van, hopefully as a precursor for further large-scale SPS constructions in the region. A daily analysis considering energy production and global radiation was applied to the system in 2013 for 365 days. It was found that the yearly exergy efficiency of the system was 10% and total electrical energy production was 31,038.95 kWh, averaging 1763.5 kWh/kWp yearly.

The electricity generation from solar energy is one of the crucial ways for sustainable growth and it is exploited through solar photovoltaic or solar thermal routes for different purposes. However, solar characteristics of a region play a critical role in planning and designing solar power applications. At this point, the solar radiation data is an essential parameter for a proper solar energy analysis. In this context, the solar regime of Van, Turkey is analyzed broadly in this paper. As a distinct approach, not only the solar radiation parameter but also insolation period and air temperature parameters are considered in the conducted analysis here. This meteorological dataset contains hourly, daily and monthly measurements during a six-month period. Many useful visualizations and reasonable assessments are made for the solar characteristics of Van, Turkey.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2011 TurkeyPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Iskender, Ires; Genc, Naci;Abstract In this paper, an improved soft switched two cell interleaved boost AC/DC converter with high power factor is proposed and investigated.
