Abstract This paper addresses the provision of ancillary services in smart energy systems. A large number of prosumers are aggregated by an Energy Service Provider (ESP) in order to provide a manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR) service, which consists in offering some degree of flexibility and be willing to provide a power variation over a given time interval upon reception of an explicit manual request by the Transmission System Operator (TSO). The main focus of this paper is to define how the ESP can optimally distribute the requested flexibility effort to the prosumers in the pool, promptly providing the agreed mFRR service upon request of the TSO. In particular, a scalable strategy is proposed, able to account for integer decision variables like on/off commands, while reducing the combinatorial complexity of the problem and preserving privacy of local information via distributed computations. Lead and rebound effects are avoided by maintaining the originally scheduled energy exchange profile before and after the time interval where the TSO request must be satisfied. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of scalability and quality of the obtained feasible solution.

In this paper, we propose a novel randomized approach to Stochastic Model Predictive Control (SMPC) for a linear system affected by a disturbance with unbounded support. As it is common in this setup, we focus on the case where the input/state of the system are subject to probabilistic constraints, i.e., the constraints have to be satisfied for all the disturbance realizations but for a set having probability smaller than a given threshold. This leads to solving at each time t a finite-horizon chance-constrained optimization problem, which is known to be computationally intractable except for few special cases. The key distinguishing feature of our approach is that the solution to this finite-horizon chance-constrained problem is computed by first extracting at random a finite number of disturbance realizations, and then replacing the probabilistic constraints with hard constraints associated with the extracted disturbance realizations only. Despite the apparent naivety of the approach, we show that, if the control policy is suitably parameterized and the number of disturbance realizations is appropriately chosen, then, the obtained solution is guaranteed to satisfy the original probabilistic constraints. Interestingly, the approach does not require any restrictive assumption on the disturbance distribution and has a wide realm of applicability.

This paper concerns the design of an energy management system for a building cooling system that includes a chiller plant (with two or more chiller units), a thermal storage unit, and a cooling load. The latter is modeled in a probabilistic framework to account for the uncertainty in the building occupancy. The energy management task essentially consists in the minimization of the energy consumption of the cooling system, while preserving comfort in the building. This is achieved by a twofold strategy. The cooling power request is optimally distributed among the chillers and the thermal storage unit. At the same time, a slight modulation of the temperature set-point of the zone is allowed, trading energy saving for comfort. The problem can be decoupled into a static optimization problem (mainly addressing the chiller plant optimization) and a dynamic programming (DP) problem for a discrete time stochastic hybrid system (SHS) that takes care of the overall energy minimization. The DP problem is solved by abstracting the SHS to a (finite) controlled Markov chain, where costs associated with state transitions are computed by simulating the original model and determining the corresponding energy consumption. A numerical example shows the efficacy of the approach.

The increased penetration of renewable energy sources to the network highlights the necessity of constructing stochastic variants of the standard unit commitment and reserve scheduling problems. Earlier approaches to such problems are either restricted to ad-hoc methodologies (at the expense of a suboptimal solution), or lead to computationally intractable formulations. In this paper we provide a unified framework to deal with such planning problems for systems with uncertain generation, while providing a-priori probabilistic certificates for the robustness properties of the resulting solution. Our methodology is based on a mixture of randomized and robust optimization and leads to a tractable problem formulation. To illustrate the performance of the proposed methodology we apply it to the IEEE 30-bus network, and compare it by means of Monte Carlo simulations against an algorithm based on a deterministic variant of the unit commitment problem.

The economic management of a microgrid can greatly benefit from energy storage systems (ESSs), which may act as virtual load deferral systems to take advantage of the fluctuations of energy prices and accommodate for demand-production mismatches caused by the scarce predictability of renewable sources. In a distributed energy management scenario, an ESS may serve multiple users, a setting which calls for the development of suitable resource allocation policies for the storage capacity. In particular, distributed control policies are of interest, where each user operates independently with the least exchange of information with the other users. A methodology is developed in the paper for such purpose, based on an iterative resource allocation mechanism, realized by means of a negotiation process among users, resembling stock exchange dynamics. The resulting distributed strategy for the management of the shared resource comes close to optimality at a low computational cost, which is affordable in large scale practical applications. It is also robust to communication failures between users.

This paper deals with the problem of reserve scheduling for power systems with wind power generation, and proposes a new set-up that incorporates an AC Optimal Power Flow (AC OPF) formulation. The AC OPF problem is nonconvex and in general hard to solve. Here we propose an approach building on convex relaxations of the AC OPF problems and discuss a modification that we believe has certain advantages when combined with the reserve scheduling formulation. Numerical simulations suggest that the proposed relaxation technique results in a feasible solution for the exact problem. Using the proposed modification of the AC OPF problem, we focus on systems with uncertain generation and formulate a chance constrained optimization problem to determine the minimum cost of production and reserves. Due to the complex structure of the resulting problem, we use a heuristic procedure to solve it numerically. This is achieved following a sampling based methodology. The proposed algorithm is applied to the IEEE-30 bus network and is compared against its DC power flow counterpart by means of Monte Carlo simulations.

C. CAMPI; GARATTI, SIMONE; PRANDINI, MARIA;The ‘scenario approach’ is an innovative technology that has been introduced to solve convex optimization problems with an infinite number of constraints, a class of problems which often occurs when dealing with uncertainty. This technology relies on random sampling of constraints, and provides a powerful means for solving a variety of design problems in systems and control. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the scenario approach at a tutorial level, focusing mainly on algorithmic aspects. Its versatility and virtues will be pointed out through a number of examples in model reduction, robust and optimal control.
