    The integration of clean energy sources (CESs) into modern power systems has been studied using various power converter topologies. The challenges of integrating various CESs are facilitated by the proper design of multi-port power converter (MPPC) architecture. In this study, a brand-new two-stage MPPC is suggested as a solution to the intermittent nature and slow response (SR) of CESs. The suggested system combines a DC\DC and a DC\AC converter and storage unit, and the suggested circuit additionally incorporates a number of CESs (PV\wind\fuel cell (FC)). This article discusses the power management and control technique for an integrated four-port MPPC that links three input ports (PV, wind, and FC), a bidirectional battery port, and an isolated output port. One of the recent optimization techniques (Harris Hawk’s algorithm) is applied to optimize the system’s controller gains. By intelligently combining CESs with complementary characteristics, the adverse effects of intermittency are significantly mitigated, leading to an overall enhancement in system resilience and efficiency. Furthermore, integrating CESs with storage units not only addresses SR challenges but also effectively combats intermittent energy supply. The proposed system exhibits improved dynamic capabilities, allowing it to efficiently distribute excess energy to the load or absorb surplus energy from external sources. This dual functionality not only optimizes system operation but also contributes to a reduction in system size and cost, concurrently enhancing reliability. A comprehensive investigation into operational principles and meticulous design considerations are provided, elucidating the intricate mechanics of the suggested MPPC system. Employing MATLAB/Simulink, the proposed architecture and its control mechanisms undergo rigorous evaluation, affirming the feasibility and efficacy of this innovative system.

    To avert climate change, there has been a rise in the usage of green energy sources that are also beneficial to the environment. To generate sustainable energy in a financially and technically efficient manner, our research attempts to close the gaps. The potential of green sources like photovoltaic (PV) and biomass for a rural community southwest of Sohag Al Gadida City, Sohag, Egypt, is examined in this research considering its techno-economic (TE) and eco-friendly feasibility. The HOMER Pro v3.14 package is used as a scaling and optimization instrument, to calculate the price of the PV/biomass setup and the size and characteristics of its parts. This is to estimate the corresponding electrical production and reduce the total annual cost for the customer. The suggested system structure is validated through the presentation of simulation outcomes and evaluations utilizing MATLAB/SIMULINK R2022a. In addition, a TE-environmental investigation of the optimized PV/biomass structure is performed. The optimum structure is carefully chosen from the best four configurations using the demand predilection by analogy to the perfect technique based on the generation cost, operation cost, energy production, and renewable fraction. The results also indicate that using hybrid PV/biomass is an attractive choice with the initial capital cost (ICC: USD 8.144), net present cost (NPC: USD 11,026), a low cost of energy (LCOE: 0.184 USD/kWh), and the high renewable fraction (RF: 99.9%) of the system. The annual CO2 emission performance of a PV/biomass system is much better than that of the grid alone and PV/diesel. This method might be applied in rural areas in other developing countries.

    The problem of voltage collapse in power systems due to increased loads can be solved by adding renewable energy sources like wind and photovoltaic (PV) to some bus-bars. This option can reduce the cost of the generated energy and increase the system efficiency and reliability. In this paper, a modified smart technique using particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been introduced to select the hourly optimal load flow with renewable distributed generation (DG) integration under different operating conditions in the 30-bus IEEE system. Solar PV and wind power plants have been introduced to selected buses to evaluate theirs benefits as DG. Different solar radiation and wind speeds for the Dammam site in Saudi Arabia have been used as an example to study the feasibility of renewable energy integration and its effect on power system operation. Sensitivity analysis to the load and the other input data has been carried out to predict the sensitivity of the results to any deviation in the input data of the system. The obtained results from the proposed system prove that using of renewable energy sources as a DG reduces the generation and operation cost of the overall power system.

    In a deregulated power system, managing congestion is crucial for effective operation and control. The goal of congestion management is to alleviate transmission line congestion while adhering to system constraints at minimal cost. This research proposes a hybrid Harris Hawk Optimization–Sine Cosine Algorithm (hHHO-SCA) for an efficient generation rescheduling approach to achieve the lowest possible congestion cost. The hybridization has been performed by introducing the features of SCA in the HHO to boost the exploration and exploitation steps of HHO, providing an efficient global solution and effectively optimizing rescheduled power output. The effectiveness of this methodology is evaluated using IEEE 30 and IEEE 118-bus test systems, taking into account system parameters. The potency of the proposed method is analyzed by comparing the results of the hHHO-SCA with those from other recent optimization techniques. The findings show that the hHHO-SCA outperforms other methods by avoiding local optima and demonstrating promising convergence characteristics.

    A lightning stroke causes current injection into transmission lines at the point of contact. The lightning performance can be difficult to understand without using simulation programs. PSCAD is powerful software was selected to develop the appropriate data required to investigate this phenomena. In this paper, a model of 500 kV transmission line is developed when lightning stroke hits the shield wire directly at the mid-span sag location of transmission line. This study emphasizes on lightning performance when stroke hits either top of transmission tower or position of maximum sag locations between towers. In addition, the effects of lightning strokes on overvoltage along transmission system are studied. The results revealed that the sag of transmission line has a considerable influence on fast transient flashover and induced voltages occurrences across line insulators as well as phase lines.

    Microgrids have a low inertia constant due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources and the limited penetration of conventional generation with rotating mass. This makes microgrids more susceptible to frequency stability challenges. Virtual inertia control (VIC) is one of the most effective approaches to improving microgrid frequency stability. Therefore, this study proposes a new model to precisely mimic inertia power based on an energy storage system (ESS) that supports low-inertia power systems. The developed VIC model considers the effect of both the DC-DC converter and the DC-AC inverter on the power of the ESS used. This allows for more precise and accurate modeling of the VIC compared to conventional models. Moreover, this study proposes a fractional-order derivative control for the proposed VIC model to provide greater flexibility in dealing with different perturbations that occur in the system. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed fractional-order VIC (FOVIC) is verified through an islanded microgrid that includes heterogeneous sources: a small thermal power plant, wind and solar power plants, and ESSs. The simulation results performed using MATLAB software indicate that the proposed VIC scheme provides fast stabilization times and slight deviations in system frequency compared to the conventional VIC schemes. The proposed VIC outperforms the conventional load frequency control by about 80% and the conventional VIC model by about 45% in tackling load/RESs fluctuations and system uncertainty. Additionally, the studied microgrid with the proposed FOVIC scheme is noticeably more stable and responds faster than that designed with integer-order derivative control. Thus, the proposed FOVIC scheme gives better performance for frequency stability of low-inertia power systems compared to conventional VIC schemes used in the literature.

    This paper deals with a comparative study of AC and DC breakdown voltages of based mineral oil mixtures with natural and synthetic esters mainly used in high voltage power transformers. The goal was to analyze the performances of oil mixtures from the dielectric withstand point of view and to predict the behavior of transformers originally filled with mineral oil and re-filled with synthetic or natural ester oils when emptied for maintenance. The study concerns mixtures based on 20%, 50%, and 80% of natural and synthetic ester oils. AC breakdown voltages were measured using a sphere-sphere electrode system according to IEC 60156 specifications; the same specification was adopted for DC measurements since there is no standard specifications for this voltage waveform. A statistical analysis of the mean values, standard deviations, and histograms of breakdown voltage data was carried out. The Normal and Weibull distribution functions were used to analyze the experimental data and the best function that the data followed was used to estimate the breakdown voltage with risk of 1%, 10%, and 50% probability. It was shown that whatever the applied voltage waveforms, ester oils always have a significantly higher breakdown voltage than mineral oil. The addition of only 20% of natural or synthetic ester oil was sufficient to considerably increase the breakdown voltage of mineral oil. The dielectric strength of such a mixture is much higher than that of mineral oil alone and can reach that of ester oils. From the point of view of dielectric strength, the mixtures constitute an option for improving the performance of mineral oil. Thus, re-filling of transformers containing up to 20% mineral oil residues with ester oils, does not present any problem; it is even advantageous when considering only the breakdown voltage. Under AC, the mixtures with natural ester always follow the behavior of vegetable oil alone. With the exception of the 20% mixture of natural ester in DC, the breakdown voltage values of all the tested mixtures were in accordance with the normal distribution, which made it possible to define the breakdown voltages for the risk levels of 1%, 10%, and 50% of probability.

    The successful integration of renewable energy resources into the power grid hinges on the development of energy storage technologies that are both cost-effective and reliable. These storage technologies, capable of storing energy for durations longer than 10 hours, play a crucial role in mitigating the variability inherent in wind and solar-dominant power systems. To shed light on this matter, a transparent, least-cost macro energy model with user-defined constraints has been utilized for a case study of California. The model addresses all included technologies, solving for both hourly dispatch and installed capacities. Real-world historical demand and hourly weather data have been utilized to do this analysis. A novel approach has been introduced to assess the significance of long-duration energy storage technologies (LDS) in terms of their energy and power capacity. This method explores the contributions of pumped hydropower storage (PHS), compressed air energy storage (CAES), and power-to-gas-to-power (PGP) storage toward minimizing the overall balance of system cost. Historical electricity demand, hourly weather data, and current technology costs are used to investigate high-level implications for California’s power system options. Increasing the storage capacity of each technology from 1 to 10 hours results in 29.6%, 14.4%, and 7.5% cost reduction for PHS, CAES, and PGP cases respectively. However, in studied simulations, maximum availability (maximum) of pumped hydropower storage reduces the balance of system costs by 72.3% followed by CAES (60.6%) and PGP (48.6%) and suggests that pumped hydropower storage in combination with CAES/PGP could play an important role in California’s electricity system, provided that suitable sites can be identified and constructed at reasonable costs.

    This paper deals with an experimental study of the influence of conductive (Fe3O4) and insulating (Al2O3) nanoparticles at various concentrations on the dielectric strength of transformer mineral oil. The method of preparation and characterization of these nanofluids (NFs) through the measurements of zeta potential, the real and imaginary parts of dielectric permittivity as well as the concentration and size of nanoparticles using scanning electron microscope images of nanoparticles powders and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis are presented. Experimental findings reveal that these two types of nanoparticles materials significantly improve AC breakdown voltage and the magnitude of this enhancement depends on the nanoparticle concentration, and the size and nature (material) of nanoparticles. For a given type of nanoparticle, the effect is more marked with the smallest nanoparticles. The conductive nanoparticles offer higher enhancement of dielectric strength compared with insulating nanoparticle based nanofluids. With Fe3O4, the breakdown voltage (BDV) can exceed twice that of mineral oil and it increases by more than 76% with Al2O3. The physicochemical mechanisms implicated in this improvement are discussed.

    This paper is devoted to a comparison study of the breakdown voltage of CO2, N2, and SF6 gases, and CO2–SF6 and N2–SF6 mixtures under different voltage waveforms, namely AC, DC, and lightning impulse voltages, in point–plane and sphere–sphere electrode arrangements. The influence of pressure, voltage polarity, and percentage of SF6 in CO2 and N2 were studied, and equivalencies between the breakdown voltage of SF6 and those of the considered mixtures were analyzed. It is shown that the breakdown voltage of SF6 is the highest, whatever the applied voltage waveforms. Similarly, for a given voltage waveform, the breakdown voltage of SF6 is the highest. The AC breakdown voltage is the lowest for all gases. The addition of small amounts of SF6 to CO2 and N2 significantly improved the breakdown voltages of both natural gases. For a given breakdown voltage, the ratio between the pressure of CO2 to that of SF6 was generally lower than the pressure of N2 to SF6, whatever the voltage waveforms.

    The integration of clean energy sources (CESs) into modern power systems has been studied using various power converter topologies. The challenges of integrating various CESs are facilitated by the proper design of multi-port power converter (MPPC) architecture. In this study, a brand-new two-stage MPPC is suggested as a solution to the intermittent nature and slow response (SR) of CESs. The suggested system combines a DC\DC and a DC\AC converter and storage unit, and the suggested circuit additionally incorporates a number of CESs (PV\wind\fuel cell (FC)). This article discusses the power management and control technique for an integrated four-port MPPC that links three input ports (PV, wind, and FC), a bidirectional battery port, and an isolated output port. One of the recent optimization techniques (Harris Hawk’s algorithm) is applied to optimize the system’s controller gains. By intelligently combining CESs with complementary characteristics, the adverse effects of intermittency are significantly mitigated, leading to an overall enhancement in system resilience and efficiency. Furthermore, integrating CESs with storage units not only addresses SR challenges but also effectively combats intermittent energy supply.     To avert climate change, there has been a rise in the usage of green energy sources that are also beneficial to the environment. To generate sustainable energy in a financially and technically efficient manner, our research attempts to close the gaps. The potential of green sources like photovoltaic (PV) and biomass for a rural community southwest of Sohag Al Gadida City, Sohag, Egypt, is examined in this research considering its techno-economic (TE) and eco-friendly feasibility. The HOMER Pro v3.14 package is used as a scaling and optimization instrument, to calculate the price of the PV/biomass setup and the size and characteristics of its parts. This is to estimate the corresponding electrical production and reduce the total annual cost for the customer. The suggested system structure is validated through the presentation of simulation outcomes and evaluations utilizing MATLAB/SIMULINK R2022a. In addition, a TE-environmental investigation of the optimized PV/biomass structure is performed. The optimum structure is carefully chosen from the best four configurations using the demand predilection by analogy to the perfect technique based on the generation cost, operation cost, energy production, and renewable fraction. The results also indicate that using hybrid PV/biomass is an attractive choice with the initial capital cost (ICC: USD 8.144), net present cost (NPC: USD 11,026), a low cost of energy (LCOE: 0.184 USD/kWh), and the high renewable fraction (RF: 99.9%) of the system. The annual CO2 emission performance of a PV/biomass system is much better than that of the grid alone and PV/diesel. This method might be applied in rural areas in other developing countries.

    The problem of voltage collapse in power systems due to increased loads can be solved by adding renewable energy sources like wind and photovoltaic (PV) to some bus-bars. This option can reduce the cost of the generated energy and increase the system efficiency and reliability. In this paper, a modified smart technique using particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been introduced to select the hourly optimal load flow with renewable distributed generation (DG) integration under different operating conditions in the 30-bus IEEE system. Solar PV and wind power plants have been introduced to selected buses to evaluate theirs benefits as DG. Different solar radiation and wind speeds for the Dammam site in Saudi Arabia have been used as an example to study the feasibility of renewable energy integration and its effect on power system operation. Sensitivity analysis to the load and the other input data has been carried out to predict the sensitivity of the results to any deviation in the input data of the system. The obtained results from the proposed system prove that using of renewable energy sources as a DG reduces the generation and operation cost of the overall power system.

    In a deregulated power system, managing congestion is crucial for effective operation and control. The goal of congestion management is to alleviate transmission line congestion while adhering to system constraints at minimal cost. This research proposes a hybrid Harris Hawk Optimization–Sine Cosine Algorithm (hHHO-SCA) for an efficient generation rescheduling approach to achieve the lowest possible congestion cost. The hybridization has been performed by introducing the features of SCA in the HHO to boost the exploration and exploitation steps of HHO, providing an efficient global solution and effectively optimizing rescheduled power output. The effectiveness of this methodology is evaluated using IEEE 30 and IEEE 118-bus test systems, taking into account system parameters. The potency of the proposed method is analyzed by comparing the results of the hHHO-SCA with those from other recent optimization techniques. The findings show that the hHHO-SCA outperforms other methods by avoiding local optima and demonstrating promising convergence characteristics.

    A lightning stroke causes current injection into transmission lines at the point of contact. The lightning performance can be difficult to understand without using simulation programs. PSCAD is powerful software was selected to develop the appropriate data required to investigate this phenomena. In this paper, a model of 500 kV transmission line is developed when lightning stroke hits the shield wire directly at the mid-span sag location of transmission line. This study emphasizes on lightning performance when stroke hits either top of transmission tower or position of maximum sag locations between towers. In addition, the effects of lightning strokes on overvoltage along transmission system are studied. The results revealed that the sag of transmission line has a considerable influence on fast transient flashover and induced voltages occurrences across line insulators as well as phase lines.

    Microgrids have a low inertia constant due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources and the limited penetration of conventional generation with rotating mass. This makes microgrids more susceptible to frequency stability challenges. Virtual inertia control (VIC) is one of the most effective approaches to improving microgrid frequency stability. Therefore, this study proposes a new model to precisely mimic inertia power based on an energy storage system (ESS) that supports low-inertia power systems. The developed VIC model considers the effect of both the DC-DC converter and the DC-AC inverter on the power of the ESS used. This allows for more precise and accurate modeling of the VIC compared to conventional models. Moreover, this study proposes a fractional-order derivative control for the proposed VIC model to provide greater flexibility in dealing with different perturbations that occur in the system. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed fractional-order VIC (FOVIC) is verified through an islanded microgrid that includes heterogeneous sources: a small thermal power plant, wind and solar power plants, and ESSs. The simulation results performed using MATLAB software indicate that the proposed VIC scheme provides fast stabilization times and slight deviations in system frequency compared to the conventional VIC schemes. The proposed VIC outperforms the conventional load frequency control by about 80% and the conventional VIC model by about 45% in tackling load/RESs fluctuations and system uncertainty. Additionally, the studied microgrid with the proposed FOVIC scheme is noticeably more stable and responds faster than that designed with integer-order derivative control. Thus, the proposed FOVIC scheme gives better performance for frequency stability of low-inertia power systems compared to conventional VIC schemes used in the literature.

    This paper deals with a comparative study of AC and DC breakdown voltages of based mineral oil mixtures with natural and synthetic esters mainly used in high voltage power transformers. The goal was to analyze the performances of oil mixtures from the dielectric withstand point of view and to predict the behavior of transformers originally filled with mineral oil and re-filled with synthetic or natural ester oils when emptied for maintenance. The study concerns mixtures based on 20%, 50%, and 80% of natural and synthetic ester oils. AC breakdown voltages were measured using a sphere-sphere electrode system according to IEC 60156 specifications; the same specification was adopted for DC measurements since there is no standard specifications for this voltage waveform. A statistical analysis of the mean values, standard deviations, and histograms of breakdown voltage data was carried out. The Normal and Weibull distribution functions were used to analyze the experimental data and the best function that the data followed was used to estimate the breakdown voltage with risk of 1%, 10%, and 50% probability. It was shown that whatever the applied voltage waveforms, ester oils always have a significantly higher breakdown voltage than mineral oil. The addition of only 20% of natural or synthetic ester oil was sufficient to considerably increase the breakdown voltage of mineral oil. The dielectric strength of such a mixture is much higher than that of mineral oil alone and can reach that of ester oils. From the point of view of dielectric strength, the mixtures constitute an option for improving the performance of mineral oil. Thus, re-filling of transformers containing up to 20% mineral oil residues with ester oils, does not present any problem; it is even advantageous when considering only the breakdown voltage. Under AC, the mixtures with natural ester always follow the behavior of vegetable oil alone. With the exception of the 20% mixture of natural ester in DC, the breakdown voltage values of all the tested mixtures were in accordance with the normal distribution, which made it possible to define the breakdown voltages for the risk levels of 1%, 10%, and 50% of probability.

    The successful integration of renewable energy resources into the power grid hinges on the development of energy storage technologies that are both cost-effective and reliable. These storage technologies, capable of storing energy for durations longer than 10 hours, play a crucial role in mitigating the variability inherent in wind and solar-dominant power systems. To shed light on this matter, a transparent, least-cost macro energy model with user-defined constraints has been utilized for a case study of California. The model addresses all included technologies, solving for both hourly dispatch and installed capacities. Real-world historical demand and hourly weather data have been utilized to do this analysis. A novel approach has been introduced to assess the significance of long-duration energy storage technologies (LDS) in terms of their energy and power capacity. This method explores the contributions of pumped hydropower storage (PHS), compressed air energy storage (CAES), and power-to-gas-to-power (PGP) storage toward minimizing the overall balance of system cost. Historical electricity demand, hourly weather data, and current technology costs are used to investigate high-level implications for California’s power system options. Increasing the storage capacity of each technology from 1 to 10 hours results in 29.6%, 14.4%, and 7.5% cost reduction for PHS, CAES, and PGP cases respectively. However, in studied simulations, maximum availability (maximum) of pumped hydropower storage reduces the balance of system costs by 72.3% followed by CAES (60.6%) and PGP (48.6%) and suggests that pumped hydropower storage in combination with CAES/PGP could play an important role in California’s electricity system, provided that suitable sites can be identified and constructed at reasonable costs.

    This paper deals with an experimental study of the influence of conductive (Fe3O4) and insulating (Al2O3) nanoparticles at various concentrations on the dielectric strength of transformer mineral oil. The method of preparation and characterization of these nanofluids (NFs) through the measurements of zeta potential, the real and imaginary parts of dielectric permittivity as well as the concentration and size of nanoparticles using scanning electron microscope images of nanoparticles powders and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis are presented. Experimental findings reveal that these two types of nanoparticles materials significantly improve AC breakdown voltage and the magnitude of this enhancement depends on the nanoparticle concentration, and the size and nature (material) of nanoparticles. For a given type of nanoparticle, the effect is more marked with the smallest nanoparticles. The conductive nanoparticles offer higher enhancement of dielectric strength compared with insulating nanoparticle based nanofluids. With Fe3O4, the breakdown voltage (BDV) can exceed twice that of mineral oil and it increases by more than 76% with Al2O3. The physicochemical mechanisms implicated in this improvement are discussed.

    This paper is devoted to a comparison study of the breakdown voltage of CO2, N2, and SF6 gases, and CO2–SF6 and N2–SF6 mixtures under different voltage waveforms, namely AC, DC, and lightning impulse voltages, in point–plane and sphere–sphere electrode arrangements. The influence of pressure, voltage polarity, and percentage of SF6 in CO2 and N2 were studied, and equivalencies between the breakdown voltage of SF6 and those of the considered mixtures were analyzed. It is shown that the breakdown voltage of SF6 is the highest, whatever the applied voltage waveforms. Similarly, for a given voltage waveform, the breakdown voltage of SF6 is the highest. The AC breakdown voltage is the lowest for all gases. The addition of small amounts of SF6 to CO2 and N2 significantly improved the breakdown voltages of both natural gases. For a given breakdown voltage, the ratio between the pressure of CO2 to that of SF6 was generally lower than the pressure of N2 to SF6, whatever the voltage waveforms.
