AbstractHeatwaves exert disproportionately strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. These impacts remain poorly understood at the tree and species level and across large spatial scales. Here, we investigate the effects of the record-breaking 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and tree water status using a collection of high-temporal resolution dendrometer data from 21 species across 53 sites. Relative to the two preceding years, annual stem growth was not consistently reduced by the 2018 heatwave but stems experienced twice the temporary shrinkage due to depletion of water reserves. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight than broadleaves across gradients of soil and atmospheric drought, suggesting less resilience toward transient stress. In particular, Norway spruce and Scots pine experienced extensive stem dehydration. Our high-resolution dendrometer network was suitable to disentangle the effects of a severe heatwave on tree growth and desiccation at large-spatial scales in situ, and provided insights on which species may be more vulnerable to climate extremes.

Deze studie is uitgevoerd als ondersteuning voor het opstellen van een Actieplan Bos en Hout. Het Actieplan is een initiatief van alle spelers in de bos- en houtsector en beoogt het verduurzamen van de sector en het vergroten van de duurzame bijdrage van de sector aan de bio-economie. Het houtgebruik in Nederland gaat waarschijnlijk stijgen van 0,9 m3 per inwoner nu naar 1,5-2 m3 in 2030 (de biomassavisie2030 verwacht een extra vraag door Nederland van ~30 miljoen m3/j). Deze toename komt door beleidsdoelen op het gebied van hernieuwbare energie, ambities voor de ontwikkeling van een biobased economy en ambities voor meer gebruik van duurzame materialen inbijvoorbeeld de bouw. Andere landen hebben soortgelijke ambities, waardoor de vraag naar houtige biomassa wereldwijd enorm zal stijgen. Nederland zal meer nog dan nu afhankelijk zijn van houtige biomassa import, maar het zal lastiger zijn om de gevraagde hoeveelheden te verkrijgen. Het nietbeschikbaar komen van deze grote hoeveelheden biomassa zou de duurzaamheidsambities in gevaar kunnen brengentoename komt door beleidsdoelen op het gebied van hernieuwbare energie, ambities voor de ontwikkeling van een biobased economy en ambities voor meer gebruik van duurzame materialen in bijvoorbeeld de bouw. Andere landen hebben soortgelijke ambities, waardoor de vraag naar houtigebiomassa wereldwijd enorm zal stijgen. Nederland zal meer nog dan nu afhankelijk zijn van houtige biomassa import, maar het zal lastiger zijn om de gevraagde hoeveelheden te verkrijgen.

AbstractLow‐cost sustainable biomass availability in the European Union may not be able to meet increasing demand; exploring the option of importing biomass is therefore imperative for the years to come. This article assesses sustainable biomass export potential from Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, Ukraine, and the United States by applying a number of sustainability criteria. Only biomass types with the highest potential are selected, to take advantage of economies of scale, e.g. pulpwood, wood waste, and residues in the United States, and agricultural residues in Ukraine. This study found that, except for the United States, pellet markets in the sourcing regions are largely undeveloped. The export potential depends strongly on pellet mill capacity and assumed growth rates in the pellet industry. Results show that the United States, Ukraine, Indonesia, and Brazil offer the highest biomass export potential. In the Business As Usual 2030 scenario, up to 204 PJ could potentially be mobilized; in the High Export scenario this could increase to 1423 PJ, with 89% of the potential being available for costs ranging from 6.4 to 15 €/GJ. These potentials meet the European Commission requirements for a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions set in the Renewable Energy Directive. The total export potentials do not reflect the net possible import potentials to the European Union, as biomass could be imported to other countries where there is a demand for it, where less strict sustainability requirements are applied, and which are proximate to the sourcing regions, notably South Korea, Japan, and China. © 2018 The Authors. The results are presented at the European, national and (where possible) regional level. Results concerning carbon stocks, and fluxes of Net Ecosystem Production and Net Biome Production for whole-tree biomass (excluding wood products and soils) were derived from a detailed European forest resource database and converted to carbon using biomass conversion factors. Uncertainties and differences from other estimates are discussed.Based on these detailed national forest inventory data, the estimated carbon stock in whole-tree biomass for the European forest, excluding Russia and the Newly Independent States, amounts to 6.15PgC. The annual sink before harvest is estimated at 217TgC and the sink after harvest is estimated at 77TgC. The variations in stocks and fluxes throughout Europe are large, with the largest carbon stocks and the largest sinks in Atlantic and Central Europe (regions with abundant precipitation and a not too extreme temperature or drought regime). This paper indicates ways of both maintaining the carbon sink in the forest and at the same time producing wood for bio-energy. Main problem may not be the physical availability of wood, but the fact that bioenergy based on woody biomass requires a completely different way of thinking and acting of the energy producers.

Extreme weather events become more frequent and severe. This challenges the resilience of forests, with disturbances like fires, bark beetles, and droughts increasing in intensity. The brief underscores the need for adaptive management strategies to address novel disturbance regimes and ensure long-term forest resilience. Key findings include that the frequency of natural disturbances and their interactions is growing, which can intensify the impacts on forests. For example, bark beetle outbreaks often follow droughts, and wildfires can exacerbate the damage from previous storms. With disturbances predicted to increase up to threefold by the end of the century, proactive forest management is crucial. Strategies such as increasing tree species diversity, fostering mixed forest stands, and mimicking natural disturbances through prescribed burns can enhance forest resilience and biodiversity. The brief also emphasizes the importance of supporting forest owners through policy tools like financial assistance and improved regulations, as well as providing guidance on adaptive forest management. At present, 15 European countries have assessed a national forest and/or forest sector carbon balance. Together, these studies cover 104 million ha and present the average situation in the mid-1980s. Most of the studies have used a static methodology to convert forest inventory data into carbon. Extrapolating those studies to the total forest area of Europe (149 million ha) (excluding the FSU), yields a whole tree carbon sink of 101.3 Tg C y-1 (9.5% of the European emissions) and a whole tree carbon stock of 7929 Tg C. Although in general the applied methodologies are comparable, they differ considerably in the way net fluxes are assessed and in the applied conversion coefficients. The role of forest fires in the European forest C balance might be larger than generally expected. A disadvantage of the static methodologies used is that they often regard only the forest ecosystem part of the carbon cycle which may result in misleading results concerning the role of the total forest sector; another disadvantage is that results are only valid for the year(s) on which the data are based. The second part of the paper discusses a methodology that could be applied to all national forests and forest sectors yielding more consistent results. AbstractHeatwaves exert disproportionately strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. These impacts remain poorly understood at the tree and species level and across large spatial scales. Here, we investigate the effects of the record-breaking 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and tree water status using a collection of high-temporal resolution dendrometer data from 21 species across 53 sites. Relative to the two preceding years, annual stem growth was not consistently reduced by the 2018 heatwave but stems experienced twice the temporary shrinkage due to depletion of water reserves. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight than broadleaves across gradients of soil and atmospheric drought, suggesting less resilience toward transient stress. In particular, Norway spruce and Scots pine experienced extensive stem dehydration. Our high-resolution dendrometer network was suitable to disentangle the effects of a severe heatwave on tree growth and desiccation at large-spatial scales in situ, and provided insights on which species may be more vulnerable to climate extremes.

Deze studie is uitgevoerd als ondersteuning voor het opstellen van een Actieplan Bos en Hout. Het Actieplan is een initiatief van alle spelers in de bos- en houtsector en beoogt het verduurzamen van de sector en het vergroten van de duurzame bijdrage van de sector aan de bio-economie. Het houtgebruik in Nederland gaat waarschijnlijk stijgen van 0,9 m3 per inwoner nu naar 1,5-2 m3 in 2030 (de biomassavisie2030 verwacht een extra vraag door Nederland van ~30 miljoen m3/j). Deze toename komt door beleidsdoelen op het gebied van hernieuwbare energie, ambities voor de ontwikkeling van een biobased economy en ambities voor meer gebruik van duurzame materialen inbijvoorbeeld de bouw. Andere landen hebben soortgelijke ambities, waardoor de vraag naar houtige biomassa wereldwijd enorm zal stijgen. Nederland zal meer nog dan nu afhankelijk zijn van houtige biomassa import, maar het zal lastiger zijn om de gevraagde hoeveelheden te verkrijgen. Het nietbeschikbaar komen van deze grote hoeveelheden biomassa zou de duurzaamheidsambities in gevaar kunnen brengentoename komt door beleidsdoelen op het gebied van hernieuwbare energie, ambities voor de ontwikkeling van een biobased economy en ambities voor meer gebruik van duurzame materialen in bijvoorbeeld de bouw. Andere landen hebben soortgelijke ambities, waardoor de vraag naar houtigebiomassa wereldwijd enorm zal stijgen. Nederland zal meer nog dan nu afhankelijk zijn van houtige biomassa import, maar het zal lastiger zijn om de gevraagde hoeveelheden te verkrijgen.

AbstractLow‐cost sustainable biomass availability in the European Union may not be able to meet increasing demand; exploring the option of importing biomass is therefore imperative for the years to come. This article assesses sustainable biomass export potential from Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, Ukraine, and the United States by applying a number of sustainability criteria. Only biomass types with the highest potential are selected, to take advantage of economies of scale, e.g. pulpwood, wood waste, and residues in the United States, and agricultural residues in Ukraine. This study found that, except for the United States, pellet markets in the sourcing regions are largely undeveloped. The export potential depends strongly on pellet mill capacity and assumed growth rates in the pellet industry. Results show that the United States, Ukraine, Indonesia, and Brazil offer the highest biomass export potential. In the Business As Usual 2030 scenario, up to 204 PJ could potentially be mobilized; in the High Export scenario this could increase to 1423 PJ, with 89% of the potential being available for costs ranging from 6.4 to 15 €/GJ. These potentials meet the European Commission requirements for a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions set in the Renewable Energy Directive. The total export potentials do not reflect the net possible import potentials to the European Union, as biomass could be imported to other countries where there is a demand for it, where less strict sustainability requirements are applied, and which are proximate to the sourcing regions, notably South Korea, Japan, and China. © 2018 The Authors. The results are presented at the European, national and (where possible) regional level. Results concerning carbon stocks, and fluxes of Net Ecosystem Production and Net Biome Production for whole-tree biomass (excluding wood products and soils) were derived from a detailed European forest resource database and converted to carbon using biomass conversion factors. Uncertainties and differences from other estimates are discussed.Based on these detailed national forest inventory data, the estimated carbon stock in whole-tree biomass for the European forest, excluding Russia and the Newly Independent States, amounts to 6.15PgC. The annual sink before harvest is estimated at 217TgC and the sink after harvest is estimated at 77TgC. The variations in stocks and fluxes throughout Europe are large, with the largest carbon stocks and the largest sinks in Atlantic and Central Europe (regions with abundant precipitation and a not too extreme temperature or drought regime). This paper indicates ways of both maintaining the carbon sink in the forest and at the same time producing wood for bio-energy. Main problem may not be the physical availability of wood, but the fact that bioenergy based on woody biomass requires a completely different way of thinking and acting of the energy producers.

Extreme weather events become more frequent and severe. This challenges the resilience of forests, with disturbances like fires, bark beetles, and droughts increasing in intensity. The brief underscores the need for adaptive management strategies to address novel disturbance regimes and ensure long-term forest resilience. Key findings include that the frequency of natural disturbances and their interactions is growing, which can intensify the impacts on forests. For example, bark beetle outbreaks often follow droughts, and wildfires can exacerbate the damage from previous storms. With disturbances predicted to increase up to threefold by the end of the century, proactive forest management is crucial. Strategies such as increasing tree species diversity, fostering mixed forest stands, and mimicking natural disturbances through prescribed burns can enhance forest resilience and biodiversity. The brief also emphasizes the importance of supporting forest owners through policy tools like financial assistance and improved regulations, as well as providing guidance on adaptive forest management. Most of the studies have used a static methodology to convert forest inventory data into carbon. Extrapolating those studies to the total forest area of Europe (149 million ha) (excluding the FSU), yields a whole tree carbon sink of 101.3 Tg C y-1 (9.5% of the European emissions) and a whole tree carbon stock of 7929 Tg C. Although in general the applied methodologies are comparable, they differ considerably in the way net fluxes are assessed and in the applied conversion coefficients. The role of forest fires in the European forest C balance might be larger than generally expected. A disadvantage of the static methodologies used is that they often regard only the forest ecosystem part of the carbon cycle which may result in misleading results concerning the role of the total forest sector; another disadvantage is that results are only valid for the year(s) on which the data are based. The second part of the paper discusses a methodology that could be applied to all national forests and forest sectors yielding more consistent results. A disadvantage of the static methodologies used is that they often regard only the forest ecosystem part of the carbon cycle which may result in misleading results concerning the role of the total forest sector; another disadvantage is that results are only valid for the year(s) on which the data are based. The second part of the paper discusses a methodology that could be applied to all national forests and forest sectors yielding more consistent results. The possibilities of using a large-scale forestry scenario model for a study on the present and future European forest sector carbon balance are presented.
