Rami Reddy; Mohit Bajaj; Jabir Massoud; Mokhtar Shouran;This manuscript proposes a novel hybrid artificial intelligence (AI) approach for a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) designed specifically for electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs). The aim is to integrate multiple vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionalities, thereby mitigating the challenges associated with electric vehicle (EV) grid integration and the incorporation of distributed energy resources (DERs). The hybrid technique presented in this manuscript combines the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) algorithm and the jellyfish search (JS) algorithm, referred to as the GBDT–JS technique. This innovative approach involves utilizing the charging station to offer EV charging services and facilitating the discharge of EVs to the power grid. Integration of the UPQC with DERs, such as photovoltaic (PV), is implemented to decrease the power rating of converters and fulfill power demand requirements. The initial converter within the UPQC is employed to manage the direct current (DC) voltage, while the second converter oversees the power charging or discharging processes of EVs. Additionally, it mitigates the impact of battery voltage fluctuations. The UPQC with vehicle-to-grid functionality minimizes the load pressure on the grid, preventing over-current issues. The presented approach regulates the UPQC converters to mitigate power quality issues such as harmonic currents and voltage sags. Subsequently, the effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated using the MATLAB/Simulink operating platform. The evaluation of GBDT–JS performance involves a comparative analysis with existing techniques. This assessment reveals that the proposed method effectively alleviates power quality issues, specifically reducing total harmonic distortion (THD), and delivers optimal outcomes.

This study proposes a virgin structure of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for Load Frequency Control (LFC) in a dual-area interconnected electrical power system. This configuration benefits from the advantages of fuzzy control and the merits of Fractional Order theory in traditional PID control. The proposed design is based on Fuzzy Cascade Fractional Order Proportional-Integral and Fractional Order Proportional-Derivative (FC FOPI-FOPD). It includes two controllers, namely FOPI and FOPD connected in cascade in addition to the fuzzy controller and its input scaling factor gains. To boost the performance of this controller, a simple and powerful optimization method called the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed to attain the best possible values of the suggested controller’s parameters. This task is accomplished by reducing the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) of the deviation in frequency and tie line power. Furthermore, to authenticate the excellence of the proposed FC FOPI-FOPD, a comparative study is carried out based on the obtained results and those from previously published works based on classical PID tuned by the Losi Map-Based Chaotic Optimization Algorithm (LCOA), Fuzzy PID Optimized by Teaching Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm and Fuzzy PID with a filtered derivative mode tuned by PSO, which is employed in the same interconnected power system. The robustness of the suggested fuzzy structure is investigated against the parametric uncertainties of the testbed system. The simulation results revealed that the proposed FC FOPI-FOPD is robust, and it outperformed the other investigated controllers. For example, the drops in the frequency in area one and area two were improved by 89.785% and 97.590%, respectively, based on employing the proposed fuzzy configuration compared with the results obtained from the traditional PID.

A new ultra-local control (ULC) model and two marine predator algorithm (MPA)-based controllers; MPA-based proportional-integral-derivative with filter (PIDF) and MPA-based Fuzzy PIDF (FPIDF) controllers; are combined to enhance the frequency response of a hybrid microgrid system. The input scaling factors, boundaries of membership functions, and gains of the FPIDF con-troller are all optimized using the MPA. In order to further enhance the frequency response, the alpha parameter of the proposed ULC model is optimized using MPA. The performance of the pro-posed controller is evaluated in the microgrid system with different renewable energy sources and energy storage devices. Furthermore, a comparison of the proposed MPA-based ULC-PIDF and ULC-FPIDF controllers against the previously designed controllers is presented. Moreover, a vari-ety of scenarios are studied to determine the proposed controller’s sensitivity and robustness to changes in wind speed, step loads, solar irradiance, and system parameter changes. The results of time-domain simulations performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK are shown. Finally, the results demonstrate that under all examined conditions, the new ULC-based controllers tend to further enhance the hybrid microgrid system’s frequency time response.

Initially, the SOA-tuned FOFPID regulator is implemented on the widely utilized model of dual-area reheat-thermal system (DARTS), named test system-1 in this work for a perturbation of 10% step load (10% SLP) on area-1. Dynamical analysis of the DARTS system reveals the viability of the SOA-tuned FOFPID control scheme in regulating frequency deviations effectively compared to other control schemes covered in the literature. Later, the presented regulator is implemented on the multi-area diverse sources (MADS) system possessing realistic constraints in this study, termed test system-2. The sovereignty of the presented FOFPID controller is once again evidenced with controllers of PID/FOPID/FPID fine-tuned with the SOA approach. Moreover, the effect of considering practical realistic nonlinearity constraints such as communication time delays (CTDs) on MADS system performance is visualized and the necessity of its consideration is demonstrated. Furthermore, AC-DC lines are incorporated with the MADS system to enhance the performance under heavy-load disturbances and the robustness of the proposed regulatory mechanism is deliberated.

A pneumatic cylinder system is believed to be extremely nonlinear and sensitive to nonlinearities, which makes it challenging to establish precise position control of the actuator. The current research is aimed at reducing the overshoot in the response of a double-acting pneumatic actuator, namely, the IPA positioning system’s reaction time. The pneumatic system was modeled using an autoregressive with exogenous input (ARX) model structure, and the control strategy was implemented using a fuzzy fractional order proportional integral derivative (fuzzy FOPID) employing the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. This approach was used to determine the optimal controller parameters. A comparison study has been conducted to prove the advantages of utilizing a PSO fuzzy FOPID controller over PSO fuzzy PID. The controller tuning algorithm was validated and tested using a pneumatic actuator system in both simulation and real environments. From the standpoint of time-domain performance metrics, such as rising time (tr), settling time (ts), and overshoot (OS%), the PSO fuzzy FOPID controller outperforms the PSO Fuzzy PID controller in terms of dynamic performance.

These challenges include (1) reliance on manual cable connections, (2) constrained charging options, (3) safety concerns with cable management, and (4) the lack of dynamic charging capabilities. This research focuses on an innovative wireless power transfer (WPT) system specifically designed for use in office parking areas. This system incorporates renewable energy resources (RERs) and uses the transformative power of the Internet of Things (IoT). It employs a mix of solar energy systems and battery storage solutions to facilitate a sustainable and efficient energy supply to EVs. The integration of IoT technology allows for the automatic initiation of charging as soon as an EV is parked. Additionally, the implementation of the Blynk application offers users real-time access to information regarding the operational status of the photovoltaic system and the battery levels of their EVs. The system is further enhanced with IoT and RFID technologies to provide dynamic updates on the availability of charging slots and to implement strict security protocols for user authentication and protection. The research also includes a case study focusing on the application of this charging system in office settings. The case study achieves a 95.9% IRR, lower NPC of USD 1.52 million, and 56.7% power contribution by RERs, and it reduces annual carbon emissions to 173,956 kg CO2.

The hybrid shunt active power filter (HSHAPF) is optimized with the Gray wolf optimization (GWO) and fractional order proportional integral controller (FOPI) for harmonic reduction under nonlinear and unbalanced load conditions. With the use of GWO, the parameters of FOPI are tuned, which effectively minimizes the harmonics. The proposed model has effectively compensated the total harmonic distortions when compared with without the filter and with the passive filter, the active power filter with a PI controller, and the GWO-FOPI-based controller. The performance of the proposed controller is tested under nonlinear and unbalanced conditions. The parameters of the FOPI controller are better tuned with the GWO technique. The comparative results reflect the best results of GWO-FOPI-based HSHAPF. The suggested controller is built in the MATLAB/Simulink Platform.

Developing control methods that have the ability to preserve the stability and optimum operation of a wind energy generation unit connected to power systems constitutes an essential area of recent research in power systems control. The present work investigates a novel control of a wind energy system connected to a power system through a static VAR compensator (SVC). This advanced control is constructed via integration between the model predictive control (MPC) and an artificial neural network (ANN) to collect all of their advantages. The conventional MPC needs a high computational effort, or it can cause difficulties in implementation. These difficulties can be eliminated by using Laguerre-based MPC (LMPC). The ANN has high performance in optimization and modeling, but it is limited in improving dynamic performance. Conversely, MPC operation improves dynamic performance. The integration between ANN and LMPC increases the ability of the Neuro-MPC (LMPC-ANN) control system to conduct smooth tracking, overshoot reduction, optimization, and modeling. The new control scheme has strong, robust properties. Additionally, it can be applied to uncertainties and disturbances which result from high levels of wind speed variation. For comparison purposes, the performance of the studied system is estimated at different levels of wind speed based on different strategies, which are ANN only, Conventional MPC strategy, MPC-LQG strategy, ANN- LQG strategy, and the proposed control. This comparison proved the superiority of the proposed controller (LMPC-ANN) for improving the dynamic response where it mitigates wind fluctuation effects while maintaining the power generated and generator terminal voltage at optimum values.

The sliding surface of the proposed design has been identified to have five parameters. In order to guarantee the best usage of the proposed SMC design, the optimal gains of this controller are optimised by the Bees Algorithm (BA) and Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO); the optimizations are conducted by employing the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) objective function. A step load perturbation is applied to study the dynamic response of the system. The supremacy of the proposed approach is proved by comparing the results obtained with that from Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller tuned by BA. It is observed that the BA optimised SMC offers the best dynamic performance among the investigated techniques. Moreover, the results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed SMC based BA controller against system parametric uncertainties.

The aim is to integrate multiple vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionalities, thereby mitigating the challenges associated with electric vehicle (EV) grid integration and the incorporation of distributed energy resources (DERs). The hybrid technique presented in this manuscript combines the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) algorithm and the jellyfish search (JS) algorithm, referred to as the GBDT–JS technique. This innovative approach involves utilizing the charging station to offer EV charging services and facilitating the discharge of EVs to the power grid. Integration of the UPQC with DERs, such as photovoltaic (PV), is implemented to decrease the power rating of converters and fulfill power demand requirements. The initial converter within the UPQC is employed to manage the direct current (DC) voltage, while the second converter oversees the power charging or discharging processes of EVs. Additionally, it mitigates the impact of battery voltage fluctuations. The UPQC with vehicle-to-grid functionality minimizes the load pressure on the grid, preventing over-current issues. The presented approach regulates the UPQC converters to mitigate power quality issues such as harmonic currents and voltage sags. Subsequently, the effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated using the MATLAB/Simulink operating platform. The evaluation of GBDT–JS performance involves a comparative analysis with existing techniques. This assessment reveals that the proposed method effectively alleviates power quality issues, specifically reducing total harmonic distortion (THD), and delivers optimal outcomes.

This study proposes a virgin structure of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for Load Frequency Control (LFC) in a dual-area interconnected electrical power system. This configuration benefits from the advantages of fuzzy control and the merits of Fractional Order theory in traditional PID control. The proposed design is based on Fuzzy Cascade Fractional Order Proportional-Integral and Fractional Order Proportional-Derivative (FC FOPI-FOPD). It includes two controllers, namely FOPI and FOPD connected in cascade in addition to the fuzzy controller and its input scaling factor gains. To boost the performance of this controller, a simple and powerful optimization method called the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed to attain the best possible values of the suggested controller’s parameters. This task is accomplished by reducing the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) of the deviation in frequency and tie line power. Furthermore, to authenticate the excellence of the proposed FC FOPI-FOPD, a comparative study is carried out based on the obtained results and those from previously published works based on classical PID tuned by the Losi Map-Based Chaotic Optimization Algorithm (LCOA), Fuzzy PID Optimized by Teaching Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm and Fuzzy PID with a filtered derivative mode tuned by PSO, which is employed in the same interconnected power system. The robustness of the suggested fuzzy structure is investigated against the parametric uncertainties of the testbed system. The simulation results revealed that the proposed FC FOPI-FOPD is robust, and it outperformed the other investigated controllers. For example, the drops in the frequency in area one and area two were improved by 89.785% and 97.590%, respectively, based on employing the proposed fuzzy configuration compared with the results obtained from the traditional PID.

A new ultra-local control (ULC) model and two marine predator algorithm (MPA)-based controllers; MPA-based proportional-integral-derivative with filter (PIDF) and MPA-based Fuzzy PIDF (FPIDF) controllers; are combined to enhance the frequency response of a hybrid microgrid system. The input scaling factors, boundaries of membership functions, and gains of the FPIDF con-troller are all optimized using the MPA. In order to further enhance the frequency response, the alpha parameter of the proposed ULC model is optimized using MPA. The performance of the pro-posed controller is evaluated in the microgrid system with different renewable energy sources and energy storage devices. Furthermore, a comparison of the proposed MPA-based ULC-PIDF and ULC-FPIDF controllers against the previously designed controllers is presented. Moreover, a vari-ety of scenarios are studied to determine the proposed controller’s sensitivity and robustness to changes in wind speed, step loads, solar irradiance, and system parameter changes. The results of time-domain simulations performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK are shown. Finally, the results demonstrate that under all examined conditions, the new ULC-based controllers tend to further enhance the hybrid microgrid system’s frequency time response.

Initially, the SOA-tuned FOFPID regulator is implemented on the widely utilized model of dual-area reheat-thermal system (DARTS), named test system-1 in this work for a perturbation of 10% step load (10% SLP) on area-1. Dynamical analysis of the DARTS system reveals the viability of the SOA-tuned FOFPID control scheme in regulating frequency deviations effectively compared to other control schemes covered in the literature. Later, the presented regulator is implemented on the multi-area diverse sources (MADS) system possessing realistic constraints in this study, termed test system-2. The sovereignty of the presented FOFPID controller is once again evidenced with controllers of PID/FOPID/FPID fine-tuned with the SOA approach. Moreover, the effect of considering practical realistic nonlinearity constraints such as communication time delays (CTDs) on MADS system performance is visualized and the necessity of its consideration is demonstrated. Furthermore, AC-DC lines are incorporated with the MADS system to enhance the performance under heavy-load disturbances and the robustness of the proposed regulatory mechanism is deliberated.

A pneumatic cylinder system is believed to be extremely nonlinear and sensitive to nonlinearities, which makes it challenging to establish precise position control of the actuator. The current research is aimed at reducing the overshoot in the response of a double-acting pneumatic actuator, namely, the IPA positioning system’s reaction time. The pneumatic system was modeled using an autoregressive with exogenous input (ARX) model structure, and the control strategy was implemented using a fuzzy fractional order proportional integral derivative (fuzzy FOPID) employing the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. This approach was used to determine the optimal controller parameters. A comparison study has been conducted to prove the advantages of utilizing a PSO fuzzy FOPID controller over PSO fuzzy PID. The controller tuning algorithm was validated and tested using a pneumatic actuator system in both simulation and real environments. From the standpoint of time-domain performance metrics, such as rising time (tr), settling time (ts), and overshoot (OS%), the PSO fuzzy FOPID controller outperforms the PSO Fuzzy PID controller in terms of dynamic performance.

These challenges include (1) reliance on manual cable connections, (2) constrained charging options, (3) safety concerns with cable management, and (4) the lack of dynamic charging capabilities. This research focuses on an innovative wireless power transfer (WPT) system specifically designed for use in office parking areas. This system incorporates renewable energy resources (RERs) and uses the transformative power of the Internet of Things (IoT). It employs a mix of solar energy systems and battery storage solutions to facilitate a sustainable and efficient energy supply to EVs. The integration of IoT technology allows for the automatic initiation of charging as soon as an EV is parked. Additionally, the implementation of the Blynk application offers users real-time access to information regarding the operational status of the photovoltaic system and the battery levels of their EVs. The system is further enhanced with IoT and RFID technologies to provide dynamic updates on the availability of charging slots and to implement strict security protocols for user authentication and protection. The research also includes a case study focusing on the application of this charging system in office settings. The case study achieves a 95.9% IRR, lower NPC of USD 1.52 million, and 56.7% power contribution by RERs, and it reduces annual carbon emissions to 173,956 kg CO2.

The hybrid shunt active power filter (HSHAPF) is optimized with the Gray wolf optimization (GWO) and fractional order proportional integral controller (FOPI) for harmonic reduction under nonlinear and unbalanced load conditions. With the use of GWO, the parameters of FOPI are tuned, which effectively minimizes the harmonics. The proposed model has effectively compensated the total harmonic distortions when compared with without the filter and with the passive filter, the active power filter with a PI controller, and the GWO-FOPI-based controller. The performance of the proposed controller is tested under nonlinear and unbalanced conditions. The parameters of the FOPI controller are better tuned with the GWO technique. The comparative results reflect the best results of GWO-FOPI-based HSHAPF. The suggested controller is built in the MATLAB/Simulink Platform.

Developing control methods that have the ability to preserve the stability and optimum operation of a wind energy generation unit connected to power systems constitutes an essential area of recent research in power systems control. The present work investigates a novel control of a wind energy system connected to a power system through a static VAR compensator (SVC). This advanced control is constructed via integration between the model predictive control (MPC) and an artificial neural network (ANN) to collect all of their advantages. The conventional MPC needs a high computational effort, or it can cause difficulties in implementation. These difficulties can be eliminated by using Laguerre-based MPC (LMPC). The ANN has high performance in optimization and modeling, but it is limited in improving dynamic performance. Conversely, MPC operation improves dynamic performance. The integration between ANN and LMPC increases the ability of the Neuro-MPC (LMPC-ANN) control system to conduct smooth tracking, overshoot reduction, optimization, and modeling. The new control scheme has strong, robust properties. Additionally, it can be applied to uncertainties and disturbances which result from high levels of wind speed variation. For comparison purposes, the performance of the studied system is estimated at different levels of wind speed based on different strategies, which are ANN only, Conventional MPC strategy, MPC-LQG strategy, ANN- LQG strategy, and the proposed control. This comparison proved the superiority of the proposed controller (LMPC-ANN) for improving the dynamic response where it mitigates wind fluctuation effects while maintaining the power generated and generator terminal voltage at optimum values.

The sliding surface of the proposed design has been identified to have five parameters. In order to guarantee the best usage of the proposed SMC design, the optimal gains of this controller are optimised by the Bees Algorithm (BA) and Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO); the optimizations are conducted by employing the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) objective function. A step load perturbation is applied to study the dynamic response of the system. The supremacy of the proposed approach is proved by comparing the results obtained with that from Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller tuned by BA. It is observed that the BA optimised SMC offers the best dynamic performance among the investigated techniques. Moreover, the results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed SMC based BA controller against system parametric uncertainties.
