Ventilated Façades integrating photovoltaic panels are a promising way to improve efficiency and the thermal-physical performances of buildings. Due the inherent intermittence of the non-programmable renewable energy sources, their increasing usage implies the use of energy storage systems to mitigate the mismatch between power generation and the buildings' load demand. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the thermo-fluid dynamic performances of a prototype integrating a photovoltaic cell and a battery as a module of an active ventilated façade. Based on an experimental setup, a numerical study in steady state conditions of flow through the air cavity of the module has been carried out and implemented in a fluid-dynamics Finite Volume code. In order to assess the viability of the prototype, the calibrated model was lastly used to predict thermal performance of the prototype on different climate conditions supporting its further improvement.

Optimizing the hydrogen value chain is essential to ensure hydrogen market uptake in replacing traditional fossil fuel energy and to achieve energy system decarbonization in the next years. The design of new plants and infrastructures will be the first step. However, wrong decisions would result in temporal, economic losses and, in the worst case, failures. Because huge investments are expected, decision makers have to be assisted for its success. Because no tools are available for the optimum design and geographical location of power to gas (P2G) and power to hydrogen (P2H) plants, the geographic information system (GIS) and mathematical optimization approaches were combined into a new tool developed by CNR-ITAE and the University of Bologna in the SuperP2G project, aiming to support the interested stakeholders in the investigation and selection of the optimum size, location, and operations of P2H and P2G industrial plants while minimizing the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). In the present study, the tool has been applied to hydrogen mobility, specifically to investigate the conversion of the existing refuelling stations on Italian highways to hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs). Middle-term (2030) and long-term (2050) scenarios were investigated. In 2030, a potential demand of between 7000 and 10,000 tons/year was estimated in Italy, increasing to between 32,600 and 72,500 tons/year in 2050. The optimum P2H plant configuration to supply the HRS was calculated in different scenarios. Despite the optimization, even if the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) reduces from 7.0–7.5 €/kg in 2030 to 5.6–6.2 €/kg in 2050, the results demonstrate that the replacement of the traditional fuels, i.e., gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs), will be disadvantaged without incentives or any other economic supporting schemes.

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly used for the power network stabilization since renewable energy sources are massively exploited. Since the operating load profile has a strong impact on the degradation of lithium-ion cells, dedicated experimental tests can provide important information in this regard. Herein, a commercial high power 18,650-type LiCoO2-LiNiCoMnO2/Graphite cell was aged according to a standardized endurance test from IEC 61,427-2), which profile is formulated to simulate the primary frequency regulation service. In addition, accelerated ageing was obtained by increasing the ambient temperature to 45 °C. Then, a deep investigation was performed to assess the main degradation phenomena induced by the operating profile. For this purpose, incremental capacity (IC) and differential voltage (DV) analysis as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed at different state of health (SoH) of the cell. Moreover, in order to estimate the effects induced by the frequency regulation profile in comparison to the degradation phenomena caused by a typical full charge/discharge profile, an identical cell was also aged under this condition. Experimental evidences indicate that the operation under primary frequency regulation is less detrimental for the cell by capacity loss point of view, while larger internal impedance increase was observed in comparison to the typical full charge/discharge profile. Finally, a thermal acceleration coefficient was extrapolated to describe the cell capacity loss at room temperature under frequency regulation profile.

A specific methodology for carrying out the task is still lacking. In this context, the present paper proposes a systematic framework for the design of passive and hybrid thermal management systems (TMSs) of Li-ion batteries. Thermal tests were carried out on Lithium-Titanate-Oxide cells under realistic operating conditions in a controlled environment to characterize the electrical and thermal behaviour. A thermofluid dynamics model of the battery was implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. The experimentally validated model was used to evaluate the influence of different design and operating parameters (ambient temperature, charge/discharge current, phase change material thickness and melting temperature) using the Taguchi method (orthogonal arrays), and discussing inter-related effects of the studied parameters via interaction plots. Air temperature (45 °C) and/or discharge current (69–92 A) were identified as critical operating conditions beyond which thermal runaway issues occur. Starting from the optimal design conditions for a passive TMS, the same methodology was used to assess a hybrid PCM-liquid cooling system as an alternative configuration. The results indicate that, compared to the baseline case of natural cooling, the optimal designs of standalone PCM and hybrid cooling system led to a reduction in maximum cell temperature of 11 and 22 °C, respectively, showing the high potential of these TMSs.

Ventilated Façades integrated with photovoltaic panels have become a popular way to improve both the thermal-physical performances of the existing built environment. The increased usage of not-programmable renewable energy sources implies the adoption of energy storage systems to mitigate the mismatch between the power generation and the building's demand. Aiming at properly integrates a photovoltaic panel and a battery (Lithium based) as a module of an active ventilated façade, the prototype design has been carried out in terms of thermo-fluid dynamics performance. Based on experimental setup, a numerical study of flow through the air cavity of the active ventilated façade has been carried out by the fluid-dynamics Finite Volume code-Ansys-Fluent. The calibrated model was lastly used to perform a wide range of parametric analyses on different climate and boundary conditions to explore the viability of the prototype.

The concept of Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB), as a grid-connected building that generates as much energy as it uses over a given period, has been developing through policies and research agendas during the last decade as a contribution towards the decarbonization of the building sector. However, since the most applicable and widely used renewable energy supply options are non-programmable, the large-scale NZEBs diffusion into the existing power grids can seriously affect their stability having a relapse on operation costs and environmental impacts. In this context, the study aims at performing the design of the energy systems to be used in the case-study through a wide numbers of point of views, including the grid interaction, global warming potential, and different design alternatives such as using fuel cells and renewable energy generation systems and drawing lessons learned to be saved for similar buildings. A novel approach for developing for NZEBs, combining load match and grid interaction indicators with an environmental impact indicator, is proposed. The proposed design approach allows for the quantification of the power grid interaction and environmental impact (in terms of Global Warming Potential) aiming to find trade-offs between the opposing tendencies of building energy performances and the need to limit the embodied carbon within building envelope and systems. The design approach has been used to investigate the performances of a NZEB prototype with the aim to explore the effectiveness of the solution sets used in the current design (only Photovoltaic system) and plan different solutions (batteries and fuel cells system) for the future ones. For the base case, even though the overall PV energy generation (8069 kWh) in a year surpasses the electricity consumption (5290 kWh), on a yearly base only the 29% of the PV generation is used on-site. Hence, the assessed indicators show clearly how installing a PV system merely able to cover the energy uses on a yearly net base (or even slightly oversized) will have stress implications on the power grid. On the other hand, the use of batteries at the building scale largely decreases the reliance on power grid when not programmable renewable sources are present. Moreover, if coupled to the right size of the on-site generation systems, the storage system could increases the environmental benefits arising from the renewable energy technologies (the GHG emission reaches its minimum value of 0.92·10 kg CO/year, with a reduction of the 50.4% if compared to the base case) for a storage capacity of 20 kWh and a PV system nominal power of 4.56 kW). Fuel cells guarantee a good load match at high energy efficiency, furthermore, a high installed power of fuel cells is not required to obtain high load cover factor values. On the other hand, since the specific CO emission per unit of energy of the fuel cells are high, the CO emissions are always greater than those of the base case if the system is equipped with a fuel cell system. Therefore, future research will have to focus on the eco-design of fuel cells with to reduce environmental impacts of these systems in a life cycle perspective.

The integration of electrochemical energy storage, renewable energy production, and fuel cell systems can play a key role in the development of more efficient eco-friendly systems, spanning all sectors of energy management, from stationary to mobile. In particular, residential sector consumed 19% of worldwide energy production in 2015, resulting the third energivorous sector after transport and industry. Distributed energy systems, which efficiently use local resources, can reduce problems in regions with lack of a stable network and more in general help the growth of a sustainable development. In this case, the impact of PV-Lithium Batteries-SOFC integration in a NZEB (Net Zero Energy Builiding) is investigated by using software simulation, developed in Matlab/Simulink environment, to find optimal compromise between environment benefits, electricity grid independence, and costs. The NZEB was realized at CNR-ITAE laboratories by using eco-friendly technologies such as low environmental impact renewable FRP (Fiber Reinforced Pultruded) materials for its manufacturing, high efficiency PV panels, custom innovative multi-source inverter, advanced LiFeMgPO4 batteries, Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, optimized HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning). Software simulation helps to evaluate and forecast the impact of all of the systems described upon, aiming to obtain an efficient energy management. At first, a monitoring campaign has been launched to evaluate loads consumption, PV production during the year and performances of single elements. After this, all data collected have been used to create models of all the systems present inside the building. The model developed permits to evaluate improvement parameters such as CO2 reduction, Load Cover Factor, Supply Cover Factor, estimate effective energy consumption and costs, and choose the right algorithm for energy management.

Environmental climate change has encouraged countries across the world to develop policies aimed to the reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The introduction of Zero-Emission Vehicles based on electrical powertrains, could reduce the emission of environmental pollutants, the noise levels and could increase the liveability of urban areas. Although in recent years research on batteries has brought several benefits to electric vehicle performance, key barriers to their adoption are still high cost, reduced autonomy, long charging times and the leak of a suitable network of charging stations. Substantial improvements in electric vehicles performance are expected with the development of new Li-ion batteries, thanks to some notable advantages over other types of batteries, such as: high energy density, high power density, long cycle life and long calendar life. This paper is aimed to present a reliability assessment procedure based on an ageing model able to estimate from datasheet information the lifetime of Lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, the residual capacity and reliability margins under different driving cycles, taking also into account the battery calendar ageing.

Environmental climate change has encouraged countries across the world to develop policies aimed to the reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The introduction of Zero-Emission Vehicles based on electrical powertrains, could reduce the emission of environmental pollutants, the noise levels and could increase the liveability of urban areas. Although in recent years research on batteries has brought several benefits to electric vehicle performance, key barriers to their adoption are still high cost, reduced autonomy, long charging times and the leak of a suitable network of charging stations. Substantial improvements in electric vehicles performance are expected with the development of new Li-ion batteries, thanks to some notable advantages over other types of batteries, such as: high energy density, high power density, long cycle life and long calendar life. This paper is aimed to present a reliability assessment procedure based on an ageing model able to estimate from datasheet information the lifetime of Lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, the residual capacity and reliability margins under different driving cycles, taking also into account the battery calendar ageing.

This work aims at the development of a simulation tool to optimize the design of a hybrid fuel cell/battery system to supply ICT equipment. In the framework of the ONSITE European project, which deals with a hybrid (fuel cell and batteries) RBS (Radio Base Stations) supply system, a modeling activity is carried out to optimize the system operations. The developed algorithms separately implement a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell system and a high temperature Sodium Nickel Chloride battery for design purpose and collect them in a unique model for devices interaction (i.e. power production, storage, and control). Moreover, a Computational Fluid Dynamics battery model is developed to analyse the heat transfer while the SOFC stack generates excessive heat during operation and outlet hot gases can be effectively used. Since the SNC batteries need heat during charging process (to maintain their operating temperature) and, conversely, the reactions are exothermic in discharge mode, the described approach aims at combining SNC batteries with micro-CHP unit to optimize the energy flows. The implementation requires several alternative designs and variant analysis to secure proper operation of battery and power generation unit. The model developed and shown in this paper is a dedicated tool for the simulation of the hybrid system proposed and for the optimal designing of each main sub component. © 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Ventilated Façades integrating photovoltaic panels are a promising way to improve efficiency and the thermal-physical performances of buildings. Due the inherent intermittence of the non-programmable renewable energy sources, their increasing usage implies the use of energy storage systems to mitigate the mismatch between power generation and the buildings' load demand. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the thermo-fluid dynamic performances of a prototype integrating a photovoltaic cell and a battery as a module of an active ventilated façade. Based on an experimental setup, a numerical study in steady state conditions of flow through the air cavity of the module has been carried out and implemented in a fluid-dynamics Finite Volume code. In order to assess the viability of the prototype, the calibrated model was lastly used to predict thermal performance of the prototype on different climate conditions supporting its further improvement.

Optimizing the hydrogen value chain is essential to ensure hydrogen market uptake in replacing traditional fossil fuel energy and to achieve energy system decarbonization in the next years. The design of new plants and infrastructures will be the first step. However, wrong decisions would result in temporal, economic losses and, in the worst case, failures. Because huge investments are expected, decision makers have to be assisted for its success. Because no tools are available for the optimum design and geographical location of power to gas (P2G) and power to hydrogen (P2H) plants, the geographic information system (GIS) and mathematical optimization approaches were combined into a new tool developed by CNR-ITAE and the University of Bologna in the SuperP2G project, aiming to support the interested stakeholders in the investigation and selection of the optimum size, location, and operations of P2H and P2G industrial plants while minimizing the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). In the present study, the tool has been applied to hydrogen mobility, specifically to investigate the conversion of the existing refuelling stations on Italian highways to hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs). Middle-term (2030) and long-term (2050) scenarios were investigated. In 2030, a potential demand of between 7000 and 10,000 tons/year was estimated in Italy, increasing to between 32,600 and 72,500 tons/year in 2050. The optimum P2H plant configuration to supply the HRS was calculated in different scenarios. Despite the optimization, even if the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) reduces from 7.0–7.5 €/kg in 2030 to 5.6–6.2 €/kg in 2050, the results demonstrate that the replacement of the traditional fuels, i.e., gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs), will be disadvantaged without incentives or any other economic supporting schemes.

Because no tools are available for the optimum design and geographical location of power to gas (P2G) and power to hydrogen (P2H) plants, the geographic information system (GIS) and mathematical optimization approaches were combined into a new tool developed by CNR-ITAE and the University of Bologna in the SuperP2G project, aiming to support the interested stakeholders in the investigation and selection of the optimum size, location, and operations of P2H and P2G industrial plants while minimizing the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). In the present study, the tool has been applied to hydrogen mobility, specifically to investigate the conversion of the existing refuelling stations on Italian highways to hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs). Middle-term (2030) and long-term (2050) scenarios were investigated. In 2030, a potential demand of between 7000 and 10,000 tons/year was estimated in Italy, increasing to between 32,600 and 72,500 tons/year in 2050. The optimum P2H plant configuration to supply the HRS was calculated in different scenarios. Despite the optimization, even if the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) reduces from 7.0–7.5 €/kg in 2030 to 5.6–6.2 €/kg in 2050, the results demonstrate that the replacement of the traditional fuels, i.e., gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs), will be disadvantaged without incentives or any other economic supporting schemes.

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly used for the power network stabilization since renewable energy sources are massively exploited. Since the operating load profile has a strong impact on the degradation of lithium-ion cells, dedicated experimental tests can provide important information in this regard. Herein, a commercial high power 18,650-type LiCoO2-LiNiCoMnO2/Graphite cell was aged according to a standardized endurance test from IEC 61,427-2), which profile is formulated to simulate the primary frequency regulation service. In addition, accelerated ageing was obtained by increasing the ambient temperature to 45 °C. Then, a deep investigation was performed to assess the main degradation phenomena induced by the operating profile. For this purpose, incremental capacity (IC) and differential voltage (DV) analysis as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed at different state of health (SoH) of the cell. Moreover, in order to estimate the effects induced by the frequency regulation profile in comparison to the degradation phenomena caused by a typical full charge/discharge profile, an identical cell was also aged under this condition. Experimental evidences indicate that the operation under primary frequency regulation is less detrimental for the cell by capacity loss point of view, while larger internal impedance increase was observed in comparison to the typical full charge/discharge profile. Finally, a thermal acceleration coefficient was extrapolated to describe the cell capacity loss at room temperature under frequency regulation profile.

In this context, the present paper proposes a systematic framework for the design of passive and hybrid thermal management systems (TMSs) of Li-ion batteries. Thermal tests were carried out on Lithium-Titanate-Oxide cells under realistic operating conditions in a controlled environment to characterize the electrical and thermal behaviour. A thermofluid dynamics model of the battery was implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. The experimentally validated model was used to evaluate the influence of different design and operating parameters (ambient temperature, charge/discharge current, phase change material thickness and melting temperature) using the Taguchi method (orthogonal arrays), and discussing inter-related effects of the studied parameters via interaction plots. Air temperature (45 °C) and/or discharge current (69–92 A) were identified as critical operating conditions beyond which thermal runaway issues occur. Starting from the optimal design conditions for a passive TMS, the same methodology was used to assess a hybrid PCM-liquid cooling system as an alternative configuration. The results indicate that, compared to the baseline case of natural cooling, the optimal designs of standalone PCM and hybrid cooling system led to a reduction in maximum cell temperature of 11 and 22 °C, respectively, showing the high potential of these TMSs.

Ventilated Façades integrated with photovoltaic panels have become a popular way to improve both the thermal-physical performances of the existing built environment. The increased usage of not-programmable renewable energy sources implies the adoption of energy storage systems to mitigate the mismatch between the power generation and the building's demand. Aiming at properly integrates a photovoltaic panel and a battery (Lithium based) as a module of an active ventilated façade, the prototype design has been carried out in terms of thermo-fluid dynamics performance. Based on experimental setup, a numerical study of flow through the air cavity of the active ventilated façade has been carried out by the fluid-dynamics Finite Volume code-Ansys-Fluent. The calibrated model was lastly used to perform a wide range of parametric analyses on different climate and boundary conditions to explore the viability of the prototype.

The concept of Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB), as a grid-connected building that generates as much energy as it uses over a given period, has been developing through policies and research agendas during the last decade as a contribution towards the decarbonization of the building sector. However, since the most applicable and widely used renewable energy supply options are non-programmable, the large-scale NZEBs diffusion into the existing power grids can seriously affect their stability having a relapse on operation costs and environmental impacts. In this context, the study aims at performing the design of the energy systems to be used in the case-study through a wide numbers of point of views, including the grid interaction, global warming potential, and different design alternatives such as using fuel cells and renewable energy generation systems and drawing lessons learned to be saved for similar buildings. A novel approach for developing for NZEBs, combining load match and grid interaction indicators with an environmental impact indicator, is proposed. The proposed design approach allows for the quantification of the power grid interaction and environmental impact (in terms of Global Warming Potential) aiming to find trade-offs between the opposing tendencies of building energy performances and the need to limit the embodied carbon within building envelope and systems. The design approach has been used to investigate the performances of a NZEB prototype with the aim to explore the effectiveness of the solution sets used in the current design (only Photovoltaic system) and plan different solutions (batteries and fuel cells system) for the future ones. For the base case, even though the overall PV energy generation (8069 kWh) in a year surpasses the electricity consumption (5290 kWh), on a yearly base only the 29% of the PV generation is used on-site. Hence, the assessed indicators show clearly how installing a PV system merely able to cover the energy uses on a yearly net base (or even slightly oversized) will have stress implications on the power grid. On the other hand, the use of batteries at the building scale largely decreases the reliance on power grid when not programmable renewable sources are present. Moreover, if coupled to the right size of the on-site generation systems, the storage system could increases the environmental benefits arising from the renewable energy technologies (the GHG emission reaches its minimum value of 0.92·10 kg CO/year, with a reduction of the 50.4% if compared to the base case) for a storage capacity of 20 kWh and a PV system nominal power of 4.56 kW). Fuel cells guarantee a good load match at high energy efficiency, furthermore, a high installed power of fuel cells is not required to obtain high load cover factor values. On the other hand, since the specific CO emission per unit of energy of the fuel cells are high, the CO emissions are always greater than those of the base case if the system is equipped with a fuel cell system. Therefore, future research will have to focus on the eco-design of fuel cells with to reduce environmental impacts of these systems in a life cycle perspective.

The concept of Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB), as a grid-connected building that generates as much energy as it uses over a given period, has been developing through policies and research agendas during the last decade as a contribution towards the decarbonization of the building sector. However, since the most applicable and widely used renewable energy supply options are non-programmable, the large-scale NZEBs diffusion into the existing power grids can seriously affect their stability having a relapse on operation costs and environmental impacts. In this context, the study aims at performing the design of the energy systems to be used in the case-study through a wide numbers of point of views, including the grid interaction, global warming potential, and different design alternatives such as using fuel cells and renewable energy generation systems and drawing lessons learned to be saved for similar buildings. A novel approach for developing for NZEBs, combining load match and grid interaction indicators with an environmental impact indicator, is proposed. The proposed design approach allows for the quantification of the power grid interaction and environmental impact (in terms of Global Warming Potential) aiming to find trade-offs between the opposing tendencies of building energy performances and the need to limit the embodied carbon within building envelope and systems. The design approach has been used to investigate the performances of a NZEB prototype with the aim to explore the effectiveness of the solution sets used in the current design (only Photovoltaic system) and plan different solutions (batteries and fuel cells system) for the future ones. For the base case, even though the overall PV energy generation (8069 kWh) in a year surpasses the electricity consumption (5290 kWh), on a yearly base only the 29% of the PV generation is used on-site. Hence, the assessed indicators show clearly how installing a PV system merely able to cover the energy uses on a yearly net base (or even slightly oversized) will have stress implications on the power grid. On the other hand, the use of batteries at the building scale largely decreases the reliance on power grid when not programmable renewable sources are present. Moreover, if coupled to the right size of the on-site generation systems, the storage system could increases the environmental benefits arising from the renewable energy technologies (the GHG emission reaches its minimum value of 0.92·10 kg CO/year, with a reduction of the 50.4% if compared to the base case) for a storage capacity of 20 kWh and a PV system nominal power of 4.56 kW). Fuel cells guarantee a good load match at high energy efficiency, furthermore, a high installed power of fuel cells is not required to obtain high load cover factor values. On the other hand, since the specific CO emission per unit of energy of the fuel cells are high, the CO emissions are always greater than those of the base case if the system is equipped with a fuel cell system. Therefore, future research will have to focus on the eco-design of fuel cells with to reduce environmental impacts of these systems in a life cycle perspective.

The integration of electrochemical energy storage, renewable energy production, and fuel cell systems can play a key role in the development of more efficient eco-friendly systems, spanning all sectors of energy management, from stationary to mobile. In particular, residential sector consumed 19% of worldwide energy production in 2015, resulting the third energivorous sector after transport and industry. Distributed energy systems, which efficiently use local resources, can reduce problems in regions with lack of a stable network and more in general help the growth of a sustainable development. In this case, the impact of PV-Lithium Batteries-SOFC integration in a NZEB (Net Zero Energy Builiding) is investigated by using software simulation, developed in Matlab/Simulink environment, to find optimal compromise between environment benefits, electricity grid independence, and costs. The NZEB was realized at CNR-ITAE laboratories by using eco-friendly technologies such as low environmental impact renewable FRP (Fiber Reinforced Pultruded) materials for its manufacturing, high efficiency PV panels, custom innovative multi-source inverter, advanced LiFeMgPO4 batteries, Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, optimized HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning). Software simulation helps to evaluate and forecast the impact of all of the systems described upon, aiming to obtain an efficient energy management. At first, a monitoring campaign has been launched to evaluate loads consumption, PV production during the year and performances of single elements. After this, all data collected have been used to create models of all the systems present inside the building. The model developed permits to evaluate improvement parameters such as CO2 reduction, Load Cover Factor, Supply Cover Factor, estimate effective energy consumption and costs, and choose the right algorithm for energy management.

Environmental climate change has encouraged countries across the world to develop policies aimed to the reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The introduction of Zero-Emission Vehicles based on electrical powertrains, could reduce the emission of environmental pollutants, the noise levels and could increase the liveability of urban areas. Although in recent years research on batteries has brought several benefits to electric vehicle performance, key barriers to their adoption are still high cost, reduced autonomy, long charging times and the leak of a suitable network of charging stations. Substantial improvements in electric vehicles performance are expected with the development of new Li-ion batteries, thanks to some notable advantages over other types of batteries, such as: high energy density, high power density, long cycle life and long calendar life. This paper is aimed to present a reliability assessment procedure based on an ageing model able to estimate from datasheet information the lifetime of Lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, the residual capacity and reliability margins under different driving cycles, taking also into account the battery calendar ageing.

This work aims at the development of a simulation tool to optimize the design of a hybrid fuel cell/battery system to supply ICT equipment. In the framework of the ONSITE European project, which deals with a hybrid (fuel cell and batteries) RBS (Radio Base Stations) supply system, a modeling activity is carried out to optimize the system operations. The developed algorithms separately implement a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell system and a high temperature Sodium Nickel Chloride battery for design purpose and collect them in a unique model for devices interaction (i.e. power production, storage, and control). Moreover, a Computational Fluid Dynamics battery model is developed to analyse the heat transfer while the SOFC stack generates excessive heat during operation and outlet hot gases can be effectively used. Since the SNC batteries need heat during charging process (to maintain their operating temperature) and, conversely, the reactions are exothermic in discharge mode, the described approach aims at combining SNC batteries with micro-CHP unit to optimize the energy flows. The implementation requires several alternative designs and variant analysis to secure proper operation of battery and power generation unit. The model developed and shown in this paper is a dedicated tool for the simulation of the hybrid system proposed and for the optimal designing of each main sub component. © 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC.
