A specific methodology for carrying out the task is still lacking. In this context, the present paper proposes a systematic framework for the design of passive and hybrid thermal management systems (TMSs) of Li-ion batteries. Thermal tests were carried out on Lithium-Titanate-Oxide cells under realistic operating conditions in a controlled environment to characterize the electrical and thermal behaviour. A thermofluid dynamics model of the battery was implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. The experimentally validated model was used to evaluate the influence of different design and operating parameters (ambient temperature, charge/discharge current, phase change material thickness and melting temperature) using the Taguchi method (orthogonal arrays), and discussing inter-related effects of the studied parameters via interaction plots. Air temperature (45 °C) and/or discharge current (69–92 A) were identified as critical operating conditions beyond which thermal runaway issues occur. Starting from the optimal design conditions for a passive TMS, the same methodology was used to assess a hybrid PCM-liquid cooling system as an alternative configuration. The results indicate that, compared to the baseline case of natural cooling, the optimal designs of standalone PCM and hybrid cooling system led to a reduction in maximum cell temperature of 11 and 22 °C, respectively, showing the high potential of these TMSs.

Brunaccini; Francesco Sergi; Francesco Guarino; Vincenzo Antonucci; Giovanni Tumminia;Abstract The concept of Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB), as a grid-connected building that generates as much energy as it uses over a given period, has been developing through policies and research agendas during the last decade as a contribution towards the decarbonization of the building sector. However, since the most applicable and widely used renewable energy supply options are non-programmable, the large-scale NZEBs diffusion into the existing power grids can seriously affect their stability having a relapse on operation costs and environmental impacts. In this context, the study aims at performing the design of the energy systems to be used in the case-study through a wide numbers of point of views, including the grid interaction, global warming potential, and different design alternatives such as using fuel cells and renewable energy generation systems and drawing lessons learned to be saved for similar buildings. A novel approach for developing for NZEBs, combining load match and grid interaction indicators with an environmental impact indicator, is proposed. The proposed design approach allows for the quantification of the power grid interaction and environmental impact (in terms of Global Warming Potential) aiming to find trade-offs between the opposing tendencies of building energy performances and the need to limit the embodied carbon within building envelope and systems. The design approach has been used to investigate the performances of a NZEB prototype with the aim to explore the effectiveness of the solution sets used in the current design (only Photovoltaic system) and plan different solutions (batteries and fuel cells system) for the future ones. For the base case, even though the overall PV energy generation (8069 kWhe) in a year surpasses the electricity consumption (5290 kWhe), on a yearly base only the 29% of the PV generation is used on-site. Hence, the assessed indicators show clearly how installing a PV system merely able to cover the energy uses on a yearly net base (or even slightly oversized) will have stress implications on the power grid. On the other hand, the use of batteries at the building scale largely decreases the reliance on power grid when not programmable renewable sources are present. Moreover, if coupled to the right size of the on-site generation systems, the storage system could increases the environmental benefits arising from the renewable energy technologies (the GHG emission reaches its minimum value of 0.92·103 kg CO2eq/year, with a reduction of the 50.4% if compared to the base case) for a storage capacity of 20 kWh and a PV system nominal power of 4.56 kW). Fuel cells guarantee a good load match at high energy efficiency, furthermore, a high installed power of fuel cells is not required to obtain high load cover factor values. On the other hand, since the specific CO2eq emission per unit of energy of the fuel cells are high, the CO2eq emissions are always greater than those of the base case if the system is equipped with a fuel cell system. Therefore, future research will have to focus on the eco-design of fuel cells with to reduce environmental impacts of these systems in a life cycle perspective.

In the framework of the ONSITE European project, which deals with a hybrid (fuel cell and batteries) RBS (Radio Base Stations) supply system, a modeling activity is carried out to optimize the system operations. The developed algorithms separately implement a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell system and a high temperature Sodium Nickel Chloride battery for design purpose and collect them in a unique model for devices interaction (i.e. power production, storage, and control). Moreover, a Computational Fluid Dynamics battery model is developed to analyse the heat transfer while the SOFC stack generates excessive heat during operation and outlet hot gases can be effectively used. Since the SNC batteries need heat during charging process (to maintain their operating temperature) and, conversely, the reactions are exothermic in discharge mode, the described approach aims at combining SNC batteries with micro-CHP unit to optimize the energy flows. The implementation requires several alternative designs and variant analysis to secure proper operation of battery and power generation unit. The model developed and shown in this paper is a dedicated tool for the simulation of the hybrid system proposed and for the optimal designing of each main sub component. © 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. The emission reductions mandated by International Maritime Regulations present an opportunity to implement full electric and hybrid vessels using large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs). lithium-ionion batteries (LIB), due to their high power and specific energy, which allows for scalability and adaptability to large transportation systems, are currently the most widely used electrochemical storage system. Hence, BESSs are the focus of this review proposing a comprehensive discussion on the commercial LIB chemistries that are currently available for marine applications and their potential role in ship services. This work outlines key elements that are necessary for designing a BESS for ships, including an overview of the regulatory framework for large-scale onboard LIB installations. The basic technical information about system integration has been summarized from various research projects, white papers, and test cases mentioned in available studies. The aim is to provide state-of-the-art information about the installation of BESSs on ships, in accordance with the latest applicable rules for ships. The goal of this study is to facilitate and promote the widespread use of batteries in the marine industry.

To do this, such grids involve redundant apparatus and predictive control schemes. For high value services, unexpected system unavailability is source of economic losses to the providers. Hence, beside the internal energy storage devices, such plants had better to have redundancy of energy sources (e.g. electrical grid and natural gas network) and tailored power flows control strategies still valid even in the case of energy shortage. On the other hand, distributed storage resources is attracting growing interest to support the power networks in terms of both resiliency and flexibility facing the impact of generation from the Renewable Energy Sources. In this work, a power supply system controller based on Artificial Intelligence was developed and simulated to wisely operate the storage resources to serve the ICT equipment as Uninterruptible Power Supply (above all in case of emergency) as fundamental mission. Secondly, the investigation assessed the capability, to offer ancillary services to the power network increasing its resiliency measured system response in terms of survival time during grid faults and restoration transient time to recover initial service level.

The building was simulated in energy plus and validated on monitored data. To avoid the shifting of energy burdens from one life cycle stage to others, a Life Cycle Energy Assessment was performed. The primary energy use throughout the building's life cycle is 1,242 GJ. The materials production stage consumes the highest amount of primary energy (680 GJ) followed by the use stage (484 GJ), while the construction and end-of-life require respectively 1.7 % and the 4.6 % of total primary energy. In particular, telecommunications infrastructures (point-to-point and cell infrastructure) have distributed systems (RBS, DCs) equipped with storage devices used to guarantee continuous operation of the supplied equipment. Since high value services are provided to a wide set of customers, unexpected service unavailability is source of economic losses. This embedded UPS function, despite avoiding service interruption and contract penalties to the service providers, requires batteries whose unused capacity could be fruitfully exploited to provide the grid with valuable and paid energy services (frequency regulation - power and/or energy regulation in time slots - peak smoothing). For this reason, the supply systems of such plants, beside the internal energy storage devices, had better to have redundancy of energy sources (e.g. electrical grid and natural gas network) and tailored power flows control strategies to optimize the equipment utilization and costs, even in the case of external energy shortage. In this work, a combined approach with Fuel Cell (FC) and Fuzzy Logic (FL) is investigated to determine a good compromise between equipment installation, control logic, and availability of the service (downtime probability), even accounting for weather forecast, energy price and storage system exploitation (depth of discharge). For the implemented case studies of the simulation, a landline station located in Italy is analyzed by simulating different functions and power equipment to assess the benefits achievable the presented approach.

A specific methodology for carrying out the task is still lacking. In this context, the present paper proposes a systematic framework for the design of passive and hybrid thermal management systems (TMSs) of Li-ion batteries. Thermal tests were carried out on Lithium-Titanate-Oxide cells under realistic operating conditions in a controlled environment to characterize the electrical and thermal behaviour. A thermofluid dynamics model of the battery was implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. The experimentally validated model was used to evaluate the influence of different design and operating parameters (ambient temperature, charge/discharge current, phase change material thickness and melting temperature) using the Taguchi method (orthogonal arrays), and discussing inter-related effects of the studied parameters via interaction plots. Air temperature (45 °C) and/or discharge current (69–92 A) were identified as critical operating conditions beyond which thermal runaway issues occur. Starting from the optimal design conditions for a passive TMS, the same methodology was used to assess a hybrid PCM-liquid cooling system as an alternative configuration. The results indicate that, compared to the baseline case of natural cooling, the optimal designs of standalone PCM and hybrid cooling system led to a reduction in maximum cell temperature of 11 and 22 °C, respectively, showing the high potential of these TMSs.

Brunaccini; Francesco Sergi; Francesco Guarino; Vincenzo Antonucci; Giovanni Tumminia;Abstract The concept of Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB), as a grid-connected building that generates as much energy as it uses over a given period, has been developing through policies and research agendas during the last decade as a contribution towards the decarbonization of the building sector. However, since the most applicable and widely used renewable energy supply options are non-programmable, the large-scale NZEBs diffusion into the existing power grids can seriously affect their stability having a relapse on operation costs and environmental impacts. In this context, the study aims at performing the design of the energy systems to be used in the case-study through a wide numbers of point of views, including the grid interaction, global warming potential, and different design alternatives such as using fuel cells and renewable energy generation systems and drawing lessons learned to be saved for similar buildings. A novel approach for developing for NZEBs, combining load match and grid interaction indicators with an environmental impact indicator, is proposed. The proposed design approach allows for the quantification of the power grid interaction and environmental impact (in terms of Global Warming Potential) aiming to find trade-offs between the opposing tendencies of building energy performances and the need to limit the embodied carbon within building envelope and systems. The design approach has been used to investigate the performances of a NZEB prototype with the aim to explore the effectiveness of the solution sets used in the current design (only Photovoltaic system) and plan different solutions (batteries and fuel cells system) for the future ones. For the base case, even though the overall PV energy generation (8069 kWhe) in a year surpasses the electricity consumption (5290 kWhe), on a yearly base only the 29% of the PV generation is used on-site. Hence, the assessed indicators show clearly how installing a PV system merely able to cover the energy uses on a yearly net base (or even slightly oversized) will have stress implications on the power grid. On the other hand, the use of batteries at the building scale largely decreases the reliance on power grid when not programmable renewable sources are present. Moreover, if coupled to the right size of the on-site generation systems, the storage system could increases the environmental benefits arising from the renewable energy technologies (the GHG emission reaches its minimum value of 0.92·103 kg CO2eq/year, with a reduction of the 50.4% if compared to the base case) for a storage capacity of 20 kWh and a PV system nominal power of 4.56 kW). Fuel cells guarantee a good load match at high energy efficiency, furthermore, a high installed power of fuel cells is not required to obtain high load cover factor values. On the other hand, since the specific CO2eq emission per unit of energy of the fuel cells are high, the CO2eq emissions are always greater than those of the base case if the system is equipped with a fuel cell system. Therefore, future research will have to focus on the eco-design of fuel cells with to reduce environmental impacts of these systems in a life cycle perspective.

In the framework of the ONSITE European project, which deals with a hybrid (fuel cell and batteries) RBS (Radio Base Stations) supply system, a modeling activity is carried out to optimize the system operations. The developed algorithms separately implement a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell system and a high temperature Sodium Nickel Chloride battery for design purpose and collect them in a unique model for devices interaction (i.e. power production, storage, and control). Moreover, a Computational Fluid Dynamics battery model is developed to analyse the heat transfer while the SOFC stack generates excessive heat during operation and outlet hot gases can be effectively used. Since the SNC batteries need heat during charging process (to maintain their operating temperature) and, conversely, the reactions are exothermic in discharge mode, the described approach aims at combining SNC batteries with micro-CHP unit to optimize the energy flows. The implementation requires several alternative designs and variant analysis to secure proper operation of battery and power generation unit. The model developed and shown in this paper is a dedicated tool for the simulation of the hybrid system proposed and for the optimal designing of each main sub component. © 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. The emission reductions mandated by International Maritime Regulations present an opportunity to implement full electric and hybrid vessels using large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs). lithium-ionion batteries (LIB), due to their high power and specific energy, which allows for scalability and adaptability to large transportation systems, are currently the most widely used electrochemical storage system. Hence, BESSs are the focus of this review proposing a comprehensive discussion on the commercial LIB chemistries that are currently available for marine applications and their potential role in ship services. This work outlines key elements that are necessary for designing a BESS for ships, including an overview of the regulatory framework for large-scale onboard LIB installations. The basic technical information about system integration has been summarized from various research projects, white papers, and test cases mentioned in available studies. The aim is to provide state-of-the-art information about the installation of BESSs on ships, in accordance with the latest applicable rules for ships. The goal of this study is to facilitate and promote the widespread use of batteries in the marine industry.

To do this, such grids involve redundant apparatus and predictive control schemes. For high value services, unexpected system unavailability is source of economic losses to the providers. Hence, beside the internal energy storage devices, such plants had better to have redundancy of energy sources (e.g. electrical grid and natural gas network) and tailored power flows control strategies still valid even in the case of energy shortage. On the other hand, distributed storage resources is attracting growing interest to support the power networks in terms of both resiliency and flexibility facing the impact of generation from the Renewable Energy Sources. In this work, a power supply system controller based on Artificial Intelligence was developed and simulated to wisely operate the storage resources to serve the ICT equipment as Uninterruptible Power Supply (above all in case of emergency) as fundamental mission. Secondly, the investigation assessed the capability, to offer ancillary services to the power network increasing its resiliency measured system response in terms of survival time during grid faults and restoration transient time to recover initial service level.

The building was simulated in energy plus and validated on monitored data. To avoid the shifting of energy burdens from one life cycle stage to others, a Life Cycle Energy Assessment was performed. The primary energy use throughout the building's life cycle is 1,242 GJ. The materials production stage consumes the highest amount of primary energy (680 GJ) followed by the use stage (484 GJ), while the construction and end-of-life require respectively 1.7 % and the 4.6 % of total primary energy. This embedded UPS function, despite avoiding service interruption and contract penalties to the service providers, requires batteries whose unused capacity could be fruitfully exploited to provide the grid with valuable and paid energy services (frequency regulation - power and/or energy regulation in time slots - peak smoothing). For this reason, the supply systems of such plants, beside the internal energy storage devices, had better to have redundancy of energy sources (e.g. electrical grid and natural gas network) and tailored power flows control strategies to optimize the equipment utilization and costs, even in the case of external energy shortage. In this work, a combined approach with Fuel Cell (FC) and Fuzzy Logic (FL) is investigated to determine a good compromise between equipment installation, control logic, and availability of the service (downtime probability), even accounting for weather forecast, energy price and storage system exploitation (depth of discharge). For the implemented case studies of the simulation, a landline station located in Italy is analyzed by simulating different functions and power equipment to assess the benefits achievable the presented approach.
