Given virtual reality (VR)’s popularity, VR already impacts various applications such as education and tourism. In the above applications, users usually need to follow a specific target, such as a teacher or a tour guide, to explore and learn from the environment. However, because of the constraint with visual senses and unintuitive locomotion, following a target in VR is not as easy as doing it in real life. As a result, the user may not concentrate on the audio narration or the surroundings. Therefore, finding a following mechanism that can help the user concentrate and learn in VR is important. In this paper, we focus on the following techniques in VR. We propose four types of following mechanisms: limited (which restricts the user’s ability to move), semi-limited (which constrains the user’s range of activity), improved semi-limited (with visual assistance), and not limited (user’s movement is not constrained). This study consisted of 29 participants divided into four groups and aimed to evaluate how the following mechanisms affect user experience and make users more concentrated in the virtual world. The experiment shows that the semi-limited following mechanism with visual assistance is superior to the other three types in the performance of the touring experience and helping users pay attention to the tour content.

Biomass is a promising resource for the production of renewable energy, liquid fuels, and chemicals. Microwave pyrolysis is one of the directions of multifunctional conversion of raw materials. In the present work, the effect of microwave power on the characteristics of sawdust pyrolysis is studied. With an increase in power, the maximum yield of combustible gases increased, and a large proportion of the total pyrolysis time included the useful time for the release of gases. An increase in power affected the yield of individual gases non-linearly and on a different scale. The average yield of CO and CO2 remained practically unchanged when the microwave power was increased from 840 to 1760 W. However, with a further increase in power to 2200 W, there was a significant increase in the average yield of CO and CO2 (2.5 and 1.4 times, respectively). An increase in power by 2.6 times contributed to an increase in the average yield of CH4 by 5 times and H2 by 3.8 times. The increased power of microwaves contributed to the degassing of wood and intensification of secondary pyrolysis reactions, which resulted in a decrease in the mass of the solid residue by 5.3 times and a decrease in the liquid product yield by 2.7 times. A comprehensive analysis using MCDA showed that an increase in energy costs with an increase in microwave power is integrally compensated by an improvement in pyrolysis performance. So, when the power was varied from 840 W to 2200 W, the pyrolysis efficiency indicator increased by 1.3–2.2 times, considering the growth in energy consumption.

An attack–defense aerial war game is developed to maximize the capability of defense forces in protecting a target area from an attack force. The attack force is composed of multiple attack stations in slant or pincer formation, and each attack station can launch multiple attackers against the defense force. The defense force is composed of one major post, two minor posts, and multiple defense stations, and each defense station is equipped with multiple interceptors against the approaching attackers. Four optional defense goals are proposed to guide the deployment of defense stations. A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to acquire an optimal deployment plan of all the defense stations, under a specific defense goal. Multiple games are played with the optimal deployment plan, and the results are analyzed statistically. Interesting outlier cases are also inspected to gain more insights on the nature of the games.

Façade elements are a building component that satisfies multiple performance parameters. Among other things, “advanced façades” take advantage of hybrid solutions, such as assembling laminated materials. In addition to the enhanced mechanical properties that are typical of optimally composed hybrid structural components, these systems are energy-efficient, durable, and offer lighting comfort and optimal thermal performance, an example of which is the structural solution developed in collaboration with the University of Zagreb and the University of Ljubljana within the Croatian Science Foundation VETROLIGNUM project. The design concept involves the mechanical interaction of timber and glass load-bearing members without sealing or bonding the glass-to-timber surfaces. Following earlier research efforts devoted to the structural analysis and optimization of thus-assembled hybrid Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT)-glass façade elements, in this paper, special focus is given to a thermal and energy performance investigation under ordinary operational conditions. A simplified numerical model representative of a full-size building is first presented by taking advantage of continuous ambient records from a Live-Lab mock-up facility in Zagreb. Afterwards, a more detailed Finite Element (FE) numerical analysis is carried out at the component level to further explore the potential of CLT–glass façade elements. The collected numerical results show that CLT–glass composite panels can offer stable and promising thermal performance for façades similar to national and European standard requirements.

In one study on vocal emotion recognition using noise-vocoded speech (NVS), the high similarities between modulation spectral features (MSFs) and the results of vocal-emotion-recognition experiments indicated that MSFs contribute to vocal emotion recognition in a clean environment (with no noise and no reverberation). Other studies also clarified that vocal emotion recognition using NVS is not affected by noisy reverberant environments (signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 10 dB and reverberation time is less than 1.0 s). However, the contribution of MSFs to vocal emotion recognition in noisy reverberant environments is still unclear. We aimed to clarify whether MSFs can be used to explain the vocal-emotion-recognition results in noisy reverberant environments. We analyzed the results of vocal-emotion-recognition experiments and used an auditory-based modulation filterbank to calculate the modulation spectrograms of NVS. We then extracted ten MSFs as higher-order statistics of modulation spectrograms. As shown from the relationship between MSFs and vocal-emotion-recognition results, except for extremely high noisy reverberant environments, there were high similarities between MSFs and the vocal emotion recognition results in noisy reverberant environments, which indicates that MSFs can be used to explain such results in noisy reverberant environments. We also found that there are two common MSFs (MSKTk (modulation spectral kurtosis) and MSTLk (modulation spectral tilt)) that contribute to vocal emotion recognition in all daily environments.

In the process of high-concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) power generation, multijunction cells work in the conditions of high radiation and high current. Non-uniformity of focusing, the mismatch between the focusing spectrum caused by the dispersion effect and the spectrum of multijunction solar cell design and the increase in cell temperature are the key factors affecting the photoelectric performance of the multijunction solar cell. The coupling effect of three factors on the performance of multijunction solar cell intensifies its negative impact. Based on the previous research, the light intensity and spectral characteristics under Fresnel lens focusing are calculated through the optical model, and the optical–electrical–thermal coupling model under non-uniform illumination is established. The results show that obvious changes exist in the concentration spectrum distribution, energy and non-uniformity along different optical axis positions. These changes lead to serious current mismatch and transverse current in the multijunction solar cell placed near the focal plane which decreases the output power. The lost energy makes the cell temperature highest near the focal plane. In the condition of passive heat dissipation with 500 times geometric concentration ratio, the output power of the solar cell near the focal plane decreases by 35% and the temperature increases by 15%. Therefore, optimizing the placement position of the multijunction cell in the optical axis direction can alleviate the negative effects of optical–electrical–thermal coupling caused by focusing non-uniformity, spectral mismatch and rising cell temperature, and improve the output performance of the cell. This conclusion is verified by the experimental result.

Energy conservation is one of the important topics for sustainability science, while case-based reasoning is one of the most important techniques for sustainable processing. This study aimed to develop a cloud case-based reasoning agent that integrates multiple intelligent technologies and supports, which can help users to quickly, accurately, and effectively obtain useful cloud energy-saving information in a timely manner for sustainability science. The system was successfully built with the support of Web services technology, ontology, and big data analytics. To set up this energy-saving case-based reasoning agent, this study reviewed the relevant technologies for building a web services platform and explored how to widely integrate and support the cloud interaction of the energy-saving data processing agent via the technologies. In addition to presenting relevant R&D technologies and results in detail, this study carefully conducted performance and learning experiments to prove the system’s effectiveness. The results showed that the core technology of the case-based reasoning agent achieved good performance and that the learning effectiveness of the overall system was also great.

Artificial filled joints made of sand–clay mixtures with different clay weight fractions and saturations have different wave attenuation capacities. In this paper, the high amplitude impact test of sand–clay mixtures was carried out by using split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) equipment. The results showed that with the increase of clay weight fraction, the particle crushing decreased continuously, while the wave attenuation coefficient decreased first and then increased. When the weight fraction of clay was 50%, the wave attenuation coefficient reached the minimum among the tested working conditions, and the ratio of transmitted energy to incident energy reached the maximum. With the increase of saturation, the particle crushing decreased first and then increased, while the wave attenuation coefficient increased first and then decreased. When the saturation was 25%, the wave attenuation coefficient reached the maximum, and the proportion of transmitted energy to incident energy reached the minimum. Because of the lubrication of water reduced the friction between particle, the specimen more prone to deformation and particle crushing reduced. As the saturation increased, this effect gradually decreased. In the case of the wave absorbing layer of protective works, special attention should be paid to the adverse effects caused by groundwater.

The objective of this study was to compare different statistical algorithms for estimating the calorific value of coal based on a quantitative analysis of the elements in coal. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied for the elemental analysis. Three different algorithms, including the correlation analysis (CA) method, the partial least squares (PLS) analysis method, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), were adopted to accurately determine the concentrations of the elements in coal by using Dulong’s equation. Special emphasis was placed on the selection of the delay time to improve the measurement accuracy. The coefficient of determination, R2, was considered for optimizing the delay time. The intensity–concentration calibration curves were obtained for the elements in coal and the elemental concentration correlations were estimated on the basis of the calibration curves of each element. The CA showed a higher accuracy compared to PLS and the SNR. This confirmed that LIBS shows potential for the rapid determination of the calorific value of coal.

This paper presents a two-step approach for optimizing the configuration of a mobile photovoltaic-diesel-storage microgrid system. Initially, we developed a planning configuration model to ensure a balance between the mobility of components and a sustainable power supply. Then, we introduced a method that merges optimization and decision-making. The first phase identifies Pareto optimal solutions (POSs) with a favorable distribution by using a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm with classification-based preselection (CPS-MOEA). In the second phase, we utilize the fuzzy C-means algorithm (FCM) and the grey relational projection (GRP) method for comprehensive decision-making. This aims to select the most suitable and compromise solution from the POSs, closely aligning with the decision-maker’s preferences. Beyond addressing the optimal planning and configuration issue, the experimental results show that the method surpasses other widely used multi-objective optimization algorithms, including the Preference Inspired Co-evolution Algorithm (PICEA-g), the Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm (MOPSO), and the third stage of Generalized Differential Evolution (GDE3).

Given virtual reality (VR)’s popularity, VR already impacts various applications such as education and tourism. In the above applications, users usually need to follow a specific target, such as a teacher or a tour guide, to explore and learn from the environment. However, because of the constraint with visual senses and unintuitive locomotion, following a target in VR is not as easy as doing it in real life. As a result, the user may not concentrate on the audio narration or the surroundings. Therefore, finding a following mechanism that can help the user concentrate and learn in VR is important. In this paper, we focus on the following techniques in VR. We propose four types of following mechanisms: limited (which restricts the user’s ability to move), semi-limited (which constrains the user’s range of activity), improved semi-limited (with visual assistance), and not limited (user’s movement is not constrained). This study consisted of 29 participants divided into four groups and aimed to evaluate how the following mechanisms affect user experience and make users more concentrated in the virtual world. The experiment shows that the semi-limited following mechanism with visual assistance is superior to the other three types in the performance of the touring experience and helping users pay attention to the tour content.

Biomass is a promising resource for the production of renewable energy, liquid fuels, and chemicals. Microwave pyrolysis is one of the directions of multifunctional conversion of raw materials. In the present work, the effect of microwave power on the characteristics of sawdust pyrolysis is studied. With an increase in power, the maximum yield of combustible gases increased, and a large proportion of the total pyrolysis time included the useful time for the release of gases. An increase in power affected the yield of individual gases non-linearly and on a different scale. The average yield of CO and CO2 remained practically unchanged when the microwave power was increased from 840 to 1760 W. However, with a further increase in power to 2200 W, there was a significant increase in the average yield of CO and CO2 (2.5 and 1.4 times, respectively). An increase in power by 2.6 times contributed to an increase in the average yield of CH4 by 5 times and H2 by 3.8 times. The increased power of microwaves contributed to the degassing of wood and intensification of secondary pyrolysis reactions, which resulted in a decrease in the mass of the solid residue by 5.3 times and a decrease in the liquid product yield by 2.7 times. A comprehensive analysis using MCDA showed that an increase in energy costs with an increase in microwave power is integrally compensated by an improvement in pyrolysis performance. So, when the power was varied from 840 W to 2200 W, the pyrolysis efficiency indicator increased by 1.3–2.2 times, considering the growth in energy consumption.

An attack–defense aerial war game is developed to maximize the capability of defense forces in protecting a target area from an attack force. The attack force is composed of multiple attack stations in slant or pincer formation, and each attack station can launch multiple attackers against the defense force. The defense force is composed of one major post, two minor posts, and multiple defense stations, and each defense station is equipped with multiple interceptors against the approaching attackers. Four optional defense goals are proposed to guide the deployment of defense stations. A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to acquire an optimal deployment plan of all the defense stations, under a specific defense goal. Multiple games are played with the optimal deployment plan, and the results are analyzed statistically. Interesting outlier cases are also inspected to gain more insights on the nature of the games.

Façade elements are a building component that satisfies multiple performance parameters. Among other things, “advanced façades” take advantage of hybrid solutions, such as assembling laminated materials. In addition to the enhanced mechanical properties that are typical of optimally composed hybrid structural components, these systems are energy-efficient, durable, and offer lighting comfort and optimal thermal performance, an example of which is the structural solution developed in collaboration with the University of Zagreb and the University of Ljubljana within the Croatian Science Foundation VETROLIGNUM project. The design concept involves the mechanical interaction of timber and glass load-bearing members without sealing or bonding the glass-to-timber surfaces. Following earlier research efforts devoted to the structural analysis and optimization of thus-assembled hybrid Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT)-glass façade elements, in this paper, special focus is given to a thermal and energy performance investigation under ordinary operational conditions. A simplified numerical model representative of a full-size building is first presented by taking advantage of continuous ambient records from a Live-Lab mock-up facility in Zagreb. Afterwards, a more detailed Finite Element (FE) numerical analysis is carried out at the component level to further explore the potential of CLT–glass façade elements. The collected numerical results show that CLT–glass composite panels can offer stable and promising thermal performance for façades similar to national and European standard requirements.

In one study on vocal emotion recognition using noise-vocoded speech (NVS), the high similarities between modulation spectral features (MSFs) and the results of vocal-emotion-recognition experiments indicated that MSFs contribute to vocal emotion recognition in a clean environment (with no noise and no reverberation). Other studies also clarified that vocal emotion recognition using NVS is not affected by noisy reverberant environments (signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 10 dB and reverberation time is less than 1.0 s). However, the contribution of MSFs to vocal emotion recognition in noisy reverberant environments is still unclear. We aimed to clarify whether MSFs can be used to explain the vocal-emotion-recognition results in noisy reverberant environments. We analyzed the results of vocal-emotion-recognition experiments and used an auditory-based modulation filterbank to calculate the modulation spectrograms of NVS. We then extracted ten MSFs as higher-order statistics of modulation spectrograms. As shown from the relationship between MSFs and vocal-emotion-recognition results, except for extremely high noisy reverberant environments, there were high similarities between MSFs and the vocal emotion recognition results in noisy reverberant environments, which indicates that MSFs can be used to explain such results in noisy reverberant environments. We also found that there are two common MSFs (MSKTk (modulation spectral kurtosis) and MSTLk (modulation spectral tilt)) that contribute to vocal emotion recognition in all daily environments.

In the process of high-concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) power generation, multijunction cells work in the conditions of high radiation and high current. Non-uniformity of focusing, the mismatch between the focusing spectrum caused by the dispersion effect and the spectrum of multijunction solar cell design and the increase in cell temperature are the key factors affecting the photoelectric performance of the multijunction solar cell. The coupling effect of three factors on the performance of multijunction solar cell intensifies its negative impact. Based on the previous research, the light intensity and spectral characteristics under Fresnel lens focusing are calculated through the optical model, and the optical–electrical–thermal coupling model under non-uniform illumination is established. The results show that obvious changes exist in the concentration spectrum distribution, energy and non-uniformity along different optical axis positions. These changes lead to serious current mismatch and transverse current in the multijunction solar cell placed near the focal plane which decreases the output power. The lost energy makes the cell temperature highest near the focal plane. In the condition of passive heat dissipation with 500 times geometric concentration ratio, the output power of the solar cell near the focal plane decreases by 35% and the temperature increases by 15%. Therefore, optimizing the placement position of the multijunction cell in the optical axis direction can alleviate the negative effects of optical–electrical–thermal coupling caused by focusing non-uniformity, spectral mismatch and rising cell temperature, and improve the output performance of the cell. This conclusion is verified by the experimental result.

Energy conservation is one of the important topics for sustainability science, while case-based reasoning is one of the most important techniques for sustainable processing. This study aimed to develop a cloud case-based reasoning agent that integrates multiple intelligent technologies and supports, which can help users to quickly, accurately, and effectively obtain useful cloud energy-saving information in a timely manner for sustainability science. The system was successfully built with the support of Web services technology, ontology, and big data analytics. To set up this energy-saving case-based reasoning agent, this study reviewed the relevant technologies for building a web services platform and explored how to widely integrate and support the cloud interaction of the energy-saving data processing agent via the technologies. In addition to presenting relevant R&D technologies and results in detail, this study carefully conducted performance and learning experiments to prove the system’s effectiveness. The results showed that the core technology of the case-based reasoning agent achieved good performance and that the learning effectiveness of the overall system was also great.

Artificial filled joints made of sand–clay mixtures with different clay weight fractions and saturations have different wave attenuation capacities. In this paper, the high amplitude impact test of sand–clay mixtures was carried out by using split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) equipment. The results showed that with the increase of clay weight fraction, the particle crushing decreased continuously, while the wave attenuation coefficient decreased first and then increased. When the weight fraction of clay was 50%, the wave attenuation coefficient reached the minimum among the tested working conditions, and the ratio of transmitted energy to incident energy reached the maximum. With the increase of saturation, the particle crushing decreased first and then increased, while the wave attenuation coefficient increased first and then decreased. When the saturation was 25%, the wave attenuation coefficient reached the maximum, and the proportion of transmitted energy to incident energy reached the minimum. Because of the lubrication of water reduced the friction between particle, the specimen more prone to deformation and particle crushing reduced. As the saturation increased, this effect gradually decreased. In the case of the wave absorbing layer of protective works, special attention should be paid to the adverse effects caused by groundwater.

The objective of this study was to compare different statistical algorithms for estimating the calorific value of coal based on a quantitative analysis of the elements in coal. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied for the elemental analysis. Three different algorithms, including the correlation analysis (CA) method, the partial least squares (PLS) analysis method, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), were adopted to accurately determine the concentrations of the elements in coal by using Dulong’s equation. Special emphasis was placed on the selection of the delay time to improve the measurement accuracy. The coefficient of determination, R2, was considered for optimizing the delay time. The intensity–concentration calibration curves were obtained for the elements in coal and the elemental concentration correlations were estimated on the basis of the calibration curves of each element. The CA showed a higher accuracy compared to PLS and the SNR. This confirmed that LIBS shows potential for the rapid determination of the calorific value of coal.

This paper presents a two-step approach for optimizing the configuration of a mobile photovoltaic-diesel-storage microgrid system. Initially, we developed a planning configuration model to ensure a balance between the mobility of components and a sustainable power supply. Then, we introduced a method that merges optimization and decision-making. The first phase identifies Pareto optimal solutions (POSs) with a favorable distribution by using a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm with classification-based preselection (CPS-MOEA). In the second phase, we utilize the fuzzy C-means algorithm (FCM) and the grey relational projection (GRP) method for comprehensive decision-making. This aims to select the most suitable and compromise solution from the POSs, closely aligning with the decision-maker’s preferences. Beyond addressing the optimal planning and configuration issue, the experimental results show that the method surpasses other widely used multi-objective optimization algorithms, including the Preference Inspired Co-evolution Algorithm (PICEA-g), the Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm (MOPSO), and the third stage of Generalized Differential Evolution (GDE3).
