In this work, metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors incor-porating D2O-radical annealed atomic-layer-deposition (ALD) HfO2 gate dielectric were fabricated and investigated. The thermo-chemical breakdown model (E model) is used to analyze the TDDB characteristics for lifetime projection. TDDB data shows that Weibull slope (β) is increased with increasingly stress tem-perature. This may come from the temperature sensitive defects and possible redistribution in dielectric. Meanwhile, the Weibull slope is independent of the stress voltage. Based on the TDDB data, the activation energy (Ea), active dipole-moment (p0) electric-field acceleration factor (γ) and electric field at 10 years lifetime (E10years) of the D2O-radical annealed ALD HfO2 thin films were obtained.

Abstract This paper aims to investigate sustainable waste management solutions for the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, based on a life cycle approach. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was performed by using the LCA-IWM methodology. The model was adapted to the Brazilian solid waste context and to the local characteristics, including waste composition, electricity mix and regulations. The annual amount of waste generated was the functional unit adopted. Eight municipal solid waste management strategies were evaluated. Scenarios including mixed waste collection and source separated collection as well as materials recovery and energy from waste were investigated. Scenarios were ranked based on the LCA results. Sensitivity analysis was carried out by varying the electricity mix. The results indicate that the current situation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Rio de Janeiro presents the worst performance in terms of aggregated environmental burdens, indicating the urgency for implement new strategies toward a more environmentally friendly and sustainable MSW management system. It is noted that the better LCA performances were obtained in scenarios with high separately collection rates. Among them, the scenario based on recyclables recovery and anaerobic digestion shows to be a promising strategy to improve environmental sustainability. Sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the ranking of scenarios was not affected by changes in the electricity mix. From the results, the investment in source separated waste collection and materials recovery is the most environmentally friendly MSW strategy for Rio de Janeiro. In addition, scenarios with an emphasis in materials recovery presented higher environmental benefits than the alternatives focused on energy generation.

SummaryNumerous wind turbines form large‐scale wind farms, which are complex nonlinear systems with uncertain parameters. The issue of maximum wind energy capture and coordinated control has always been a research hotspot. In this article, under the condition of limited input and uncertain parameters, the preset controller and the adaptive cooperation control are designed to realize the maximum wind energy capture for every wind turbine and the adaptive cooperation control of multiple wind turbines. The research gap lies in that the Hamilton model of wind power generation system is established with uncertain parameters, and the preset controller (method) is designed to capture the maximum wind energy. Under the hypothesis that the uncertain part can be expressed as a linear form about unknown parameter, and using the saturation function processing method in the diagonal matrix, an adaptive feedback controller with limited input is designed to realize the adaptive cooperation control of multiple wind turbines. The simulation results show that under the conditions such as variable wind speed, limited input and uncertain parameters, the wind turbine remain normal operation at the desired angular velocity. It can be concluded that not only the maximum wind energy capture is realized under the condition of variable wind speed, in which the wind turbine can operate on the optimal power curve to improve the utilization of wind energy, but also the adaptive cooperation control of multiple wind turbines can be achieved with limited input and parameter perturbation.

Abstract In this paper, a reintegration-based multi-objective intentional controlled islanding (ICI) model is proposed to enhance resiliency of electrical power systems under catastrophic events. This remedial measure plan relies on a mixed-integer linear programming model with two objective functions including reintegration risk and total load shedding value. While ensuring that each island includes only coherent generators, the proposed multi-objective model solves the controlled islanding problem using lexicographic optimization approach. To ease the islands’ reintegration, charging reactive power, reliability, capacity, and power flow disruption of transmission lines are considered in the model. After implementation of controlled islanding, each resulted island may face temporary active/reactive load-generation imbalance, which may put the islands at the risk of frequency instability, transient voltage instability or a combination of both. The proposed model reduces these risks by modeling energy storage systems (ESSs) and static VAR compensators (SVCs) as fast corrective control actions. In addition to modeling voltage dependent loads in the controlled islanding problem, a linear island frequency response (IFR) model is proposed for frequency stability assessment. The test results of the proposed ICI model on the IEEE 39-bus and IEEE 118-bus test systems demonstrate its performance.

Abstract This paper aims to present a feasibility study of the innovative plant for methanol synthesis from carbon dioxide-sequestered by fossil fuel power plant and hydrogen, which is produced by water electrolyzer employing the over-production on the electrical grid. The thermo-economic analysis is performed in the framework of the MefCO2 H2020 EU project and it is referred to the German economic scenario, properly taking into account the real market costs and cost functions for different components of the plant. Three different plant capacities for methanol production (4000 10,000 and 50,000 ton/year) have been investigated, assuming an average cost for electrical energy to feed electrolysers and analyzing the influence of the most significant parameters (oxygen selling option, methanol selling price and electrolysers’ capital cost) on the profitability of the plant. The analysis has been performed in W-ECoMP, software for the thermo-economic analysis and plant optimization developed by the University of Genoa.

Abstract The price effect of the rising share of renewable electricity, which is called ‘merit-order-effect’, leads to noticeable changes in the German power industry and debates about the electricity market design. This paper estimates the merit-order-effect induced by variable renewable energy in the German-Austrian electricity sector with a multivariate regression model. The research focus lies on the impact of the estimated effects on the marketability of variable renewable electricity generation. The results show a systematic decline of the average market revenues for wind and photovoltaic plants in the period from January 2011 to December 2013. Current market data shows a continuation of this trend into 2016. According to the German long term goals for the use of renewables, wind and solar power will play a crucial role in the future electricity generation mix. If investments in these technologies will be profitable without any regulatory remuneration mechanisms in addition to the market revenues, depends on the further cost degression and the development of the merit-order-effect.

Abstract In recent years living walls have increasingly spread, thus becoming a diffuse architectural envelope cladding technology. Consequently, a more precise understanding of their thermal behavior and impact on the building energy balance are needed. One of the most important effects provided by the use of living walls is the shading of the building envelope, with clear benefits during the cooling period. Furthermore, many features characterize the thermal behavior of living walls, namely plant species, leaf area index (LAI), evapotranspiration, emissivity and air cavity type. All these particular characteristics have been accounted in the mathematical model developed in the frame of the presented research, whose aim is to provide a tool for the prediction of the thermal behavior of living walls. Two kinds of living walls, one with grass and closed air cavity and the other one with vertical garden and open air cavity were considered. The results achieved by means of the developed model show a good agreement with the measurements also supported by model efficiency indexes such as Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency index (NSEC). Values of around 0.7 were obtained for the NSEC index for both the investigated living walls.

AbstractA reactor for catalytically oxidizing liquid methanol has been developed for supplying heat to an automotive reformer. In the tests presented in this paper we show that it is possible to catalytically combust liquid methanol by dispersing the methanol and air by a nebulizer over the catalysts. In the experiments we tested several base and noble metals and found that either platinum or palladium was required at the ignition zone. The tests also showed that it was possible to achieve complete combustion when only 25 % of the catalyst bed contained a noble metal.

Abstract This paper analyzes the impact of government procurement of reserve electricity generation capacity on the long-run equilibrium in the electricity market. The approach here is to model the electricity market in a context where the supply companies have market power. The model is then used to analyze the impact of government direct supply of peak capacity on the market. We find that the firms build less peak-generation capacity when the government procures peak generating capacity. The long-run equilibrium with N firms and government capacity of K G results in an increase of total peak generation capacity of K G /( N +1) compared to the long-run equilibrium with no government capacity. Supply disruptions of baseline capacity during the peak time period are also considered. It is found that peak prices do not go up any further with (anticipated) supply disruptions. Instead the entire cost of the extra peakers is borne by customers on traditional meters and off-peak customers who face real-time pricing.

Abstract A new formulation for the evaporation, flashing, condensation processes taking place in the effects of thermal desalination systems which simulates the operation of both forward and parallel/cross configurations is coupled with an exergo-economic model based on the SPECO method. The thermo-economic model uses accurate properties for the seawater, brine, pure water and vapour and is solved with an equation solver which does not require the development of a specific solution algorithm as in most previous studies. This flexible model is used to analyze the influence of the number of effects N and the temperature difference ΔT e between effects on the technical and economic performance of multi-effect desalination systems with ejector vapour compression. In particular, it is shown that the performance calculated by an earlier black-box approach is not attainable by technically and economically realistic systems. It is also shown that for each feed configuration and a given number of effects there exists an optimum value of ΔT e which minimizes the cost of the produced potable water. This last result forms the basis of a procedure that combines black-box results with the optimum value of ΔT e and can be used to select the appropriate system for any specific application.
