Artículos en revistas Liberalization policies, the challenges of integrating distributed generation resources, and the recent flattening of electricity demand due to the economic crisis and technological change have led to lower returns for European electricity suppliers. Innovative and sustainable business models are needed to serve electricity customers while reflecting the operational needs of the system and maintaining supplier financial viability. This paper describes a novel model of Integrated Energy Services that encompasses distributed generation (DG) and demand response (DR) resources for industrial customers. We further reflect on some of the market opportunities and regulatory drivers for the development of similar schemes across Europe. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Artículos en revistas Numerical models of transmission-constrained electricity markets are used to inform regulatory decisions. How robust are their results? Three research groups used the same data set for the northwest Europe power market as input for their models. Under competitive conditions, the results coincide, but in the Cournot case, the predicted prices differed significantly. The Cournot equilibria are highly sensitive to assumptions about market design (whether timing of generation and transmission decisions is sequential or integrated) and expectations of generators regarding how their decisions affect transmission prices and fringe generation. These sensitivities are qualitatively similar to those predicted by a simple two-node model. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Capítulos en libros This paper assesses the scalability and replicability of smart grid projects, by means of the identification of limitations and barriers faced by these projects. Factors have been identified that impact a project s scalability and replicability by means of a review of demonstration projects. The factors are of technical, economic, regulatory and social acceptance nature, and they describe requirements for scalability and replicability. Data was collected from ongoing European smart grid demonstration projects through the use of an elaborated questionnaire on the identified factors. Which allowed to quantify the status quo to what extent projects have taken these factors into account. Dew to their nature the derived factors can be categorized in technical, economic and regulatory & stakeholder related factor areas The obtained results allowed the identification of barriers, i.e. limitations regarding the scalability and replicability of smart grid projects. In particular projects face barriers regarding the absence of standards, the physical limits of the existing infrastructure, the absence of cost-benefit analyses, the neglect of varying macro-economic factors, stakeholder involvement and from the dependency of projects on regional or national regulatory frameworks and market designs. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Artículos en revistas This work develops a stochastic optimization model for the creation of a bidding strategy for a generator in an energy call option auction similar to Brazil's, i.e., where the bidder can offer both the premium and the strike price. The objective of the model is to maximize the bidder's competitiveness while ensuring that the project's target rate of return is achieved with a given probability, for example 95%. The problem's complexity is compounded by uncertainties in fuel supply and the need to switch between fuels. The generators face the conundrum of bidding a single strike price to cover the expenses generated by using multiple types of fuels. We address the problem of finding bidding strategies which, taking into account uncertainty in fuel supply and risk constraints, set the combination of strike price and option premium that ensure a desired risk-adjusted return for greenfield dual-fuel thermal plants. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Capítulos en libros This paper proposes a simplified approach to design power system stabilizers (PSSs) aimed at damping low frequency inter-area oscillations when only limited information of the power system is available. The proposed method uses a simplified two-machine test system and a robust-PSS-design method based on eigenvalue sensitivities. The proposed approach has been used to evaluate the contribution of a number of PSSs installed in Spanish generators to the damping of 0.15 Hz inter-area mode of the European system. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Artículos en revistas To achieve an effective integration of the electric vehicle in the grid, not only technical issues must be solved, but also a new regulatory context and business models must be proposed. This paper proposes two electric vehicle integration business models; one resembles the mobile-phone business, while the other is more based on current practices in the electricity-supply business. Decomposition into three layers: physical, management, and business, is used to describe those business models. Furthermore, electric vehicle charging scenarios are presented to illustrate how the proposed business models fit in each of the potential situations. Finally, several practical study cases are presented. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Artículos en revistas A new multistage and stochastic mathematical model of an integrated distribution system planning problem is described in Part I. The efficiency and validity of this model are tested by carrying out a case study on a standard IEEE 41-bus radial distribution system. The numerical results show that the simultaneous integration of energy storage systems (ESSs) and reactive power sources largely enables a substantially increased penetration of variable generation (wind and solar) in the system, and consequently, reduces overall system costs and network losses. For the system, a combined wind and solar PV power of up to nearly three times the base-case peak load is installed over a three-year planning horizon. In addition, the proposed planning approach also considerably defers network expansion and/or reinforcement needs. Generally, it is clearly demonstrated in an innovative way that the joint planning of distributed generation, reactive power sources, and ESSs, brings significant improvements to the system such as reduction of losses, electricity cost, and emissions as a result of increased renewable energy sources (RESs) penetration. Besides, the proposed modeling framework considerably improves the voltage profile in the system, which is crucial for a normal operation of the system as a whole. Finally, the novel planning model proposed can be considered as a major leap forward toward developing controllable grids, which support large-scale integration of RESs info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Artículos en revistas The electrical systems of the Central American countries are linked by 230 kV ac weak border interconnections forming two separated subsystems. The first one includes Guatemala and El Salvador, and the other one comprises the systems of Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panamá. As a consequence, unrestricted energy exchanges among all countries are not possible. Since 1987, the following utilities have been promoting the SIEPAC project: INDE from Guatemala, CEL from EL Salvador, ENEE from Honduras, INE from Nicaragua, ICE from Costa Rica, IRHE from Panamá, together with the ENDESA Group from Spain. The SIEPAC project consists of a 1678 km long ac power transmission line that would link the six electrical systems of the region through several power substations installed close to the highest demand national centers and six control centers of energy (one for each country) to allow coordinated operation of the interconnection. This project also consideres a set of complementary assets into some countries and the border transmission line between El Salvador and Honduras, and various other equipment. The power transmission line will greately reinforce the actual border interconnections, which hace a reduced capacity of exchange and technical problems associated with the stability of a weak longitudinal system. On the other hand, economic savings for the region would be achieved, coming from a higher coordination level in the operation and planning of their systems. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Artículos en revistas This paper proposes a model to carry out analysis of storage facilities operation including a transmission network. The model represents short-term storage operation in an approxi-mated way that reduces computational requirements, which makes it suitable for medium and long-term operational planning in power systems with a high level of renewable energy penetra-tion. In the proposed model, we cluster hourly data using the so-called system-states framework developed in previous work. Within this framework, non-consecutive similar time periods are grouped, while chronological information is represented by a tran-sition matrix among states. We extend the system-state framework from a single-bus system to a transmission network. We define and analyze two alternative sets of representative variables for clustering hours to obtain system states when the transmission network is considered. This extension of the system states framework allows us to evaluate the impact of transmission congestions in medium- and long-term planning models in a rea-sonable computation time. A case study shows that the proposed model is 235 times faster than an hourly approach, used as benchmark, whereas the overall system cost is approximated with less than 2% error. The overall charging/discharging trends are similar enough to those of the hourly model, being hydro storage better approximated than fast-ramping batteries. Besides, for the analyzed case study, it is shown how congestion in the transmission network in fact improves the accuracy of the proposed approach. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
