Goverde; Francesco Corman;Employing regenerative braking in trains contributes to reducing the amount of energy used, especially when applied to commuter trains and to those used on very dense suburban networks. This paper presents a method to fine-tune the periodic timetable to improve the utilization of regenerative energy and to shave power peaks while maintaining the structure and robustness of the original timetable. First, a mixed-integer linear programming model based on the periodic event scheduling framework is proposed. A set of feasible timetables is determined and optimized with the aim of increasing synchronized acceleration and braking events at the same station, and maintaining the timetable robustness at the specified level. Next, a local search algorithm is developed to optimize the timetable such that the power peak value is minimized. The max-plus system model is adopted to estimate the delay propagation. Monte Carlo simulation is used to evaluate the utilization of regenerative energy and power peaks in random delayed circumstances. The proposed method was adopted to fine-tune the 2019 timetable for a sub-network of the Dutch railway. In the case of on- time scenarios, the optimized timetable increases the regenerative energy usage by almost 290% and decreases the 15-minute power peaks by 8.5%. Here, a series of Li3‐3xM1+xCl6 (−0.14 < x ≤ 0.5, M = Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm) solid electrolytes with orthorhombic and trigonal structures are reported. The orthorhombic phase of Li–M–Cl shows an approximately one order of magnitude increase in ionic conductivities when compared to their trigonal phase. Using the Li–Ho–Cl components as an example, their structures, phase transition, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability are studied. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the facile diffusion in the z‐direction in the orthorhombic structure, rationalizing the improved ionic conductivities. All‐solid‐state batteries of NMC811/Li2.73Ho1.09Cl6/In demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance at both 25 and −10 °C. As relevant to the vast number of isostructural halide electrolytes, the present structure control strategy guides the design of halide superionic conductors.

However, changing climate, population growth and shrinking land resources are threatening food security in many regions of the world. Jiangsu Province, China, is one such region. It is a major food-producing region of the country but is witnessing rapid population growth and urbanization that is putting pressure on agricultural water and land resources and threatening food security of the region. This paper interprets the nexus between regional water availability and food security in Jiangsu Province under different climate change and socio-economic scenarios of population growth and land resource availability. Climate change scenarios are generated based on historical data and Global Climate Model (GCM) products. Socio-economic scenarios are generated based on population growth and crop planted area projections. The uptake of water and nutrients are considered as two dominant biophysical processes of crop growth and food production. Complementing it is human agency, including human labor, irrigation and land-preparation machinery, which are the factors behind water and nutrient use efficiencies of crops grown. Two dominant crops are considered, rice and wheat, that contribute to 61.4% of total crops produced in the province. Results show that adaptation by human agency is necessary to ensure that food supply meets at least the demand of the province under all climate change and socio-economic scenarios. Under relatively favorable scenarios, labor could replace land-preparing machinery since the level of food production can be easily maintained with abundant water and land availability. Mechanization in agricultural production significantly increases food production under unfavorable conditions, since it improves water and nutrient use efficiencies and leads to higher crop yields. This demonstrates that human agency plays an important role in securing food under stressful scenarios of drier climate, population growth, and contraction of agricultural lands.

The supply reliability evaluation of multi-product pipeline systems can improve the effective response to unexpected disruptions and guarantee the reliable oil supply. Based on reliability theory and pipeline scheduling method, an integrated supply reliability evaluation methodology for multi-product pipeline systems is proposed in this paper and the pumps failure, of which influence is the most complex, is focused on. In the methodology, the discrete-time Markov process is adopted to describe the stochastic failure and the Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the system states transition. With the pipeline flowrate upper limits under various pumps failure scenarios optimized in advance, the maximum supply capacity to the downstream markets in each trial is calculated by the pipeline scheduling model. Three indicators are also developed to analyze the pipeline supply reliability from the holistic and individual perspectives. At last, the methodology application is performed on a real-world multi-product pipeline system in China and the supply reliability is analyzed in detail according to the simulation results. It is proved to provide a practical method for the emergency response decision-making and loss prevention.

The utilization of additives in the power cycle has been proven to be an effective way to improve the SCO 2 power cycle efficiency. As one of the core components of the system, the influence of CO 2 -based mixtures on turbine performance needs to be further explored. In this study, the preliminary design and three-dimensional numerical simulation of a 500 kW radial-inflow turbine (RIT) for small-scale SCO 2 power systems were carried out. Furthermore, the design and off-design performance of high Reynolds number and small size turbine under the change of the CO 2 -based binary mixture compositions and mixing ratios were studied. Increasing the amount of nitrogen, oxygen, or helium into CO 2 has a negative effect on the RIT performance, and the appropriate amount of xenon or krypton can improve the turbine efficiency. Moreover, mixtures with higher krypton additions adapt to higher heat source conditions. The loss of the turbine stage passage shows that a large amount of helium greatly reduces the working fluid density, and the high amount of xenon has a great influence on the dynamic viscosity, which all makes the RIT operation deviate from the steady state. Therefore, the CFD model simulation fails indicating that RIT designed based on pure CO 2 may not run smoothly and continuously. The losses in the stage with pure CO 2 and CO 2 –Kr mixture were investigated. The results indicate that the losses originated from the stator cannot be ignored and that the improvement of efficiency is mainly owed to the reduction in clearance losses. However, existing studies have generally focused on the rutting depth and rutting life, and thus became insufficient for comprehensively evaluating the influence of climate change on rutting over the service life. A resilience assessment method for asphalt pavement rutting is developed to solve the above problem. First, the original resilience method is extended to fit the system whose performance level continues to decline. Then, the calculation formulas of rutting resilience are derived by combining the rutting prediction model and the level assessment model. Subsequently, the influence degrees of climate change in representative cities on rutting resilience are studied. The results suggest that neglecting climate change in rutting design of asphalt pavement will lead to insufficient resilience, especially in northern China. (author); Lu, Ming jian (author); Liu, Xiaohua (author);Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHE) are designed to improve heat recovery and energy saving in supercritical CO 2 (S-CO 2 ) power cycles. In the current study, a modified channel PCHE is proposed based on the regular straight channel and a zigzag channel. The thermal–hydraulic performance of four different types of PCHE is numerically investigated and the methods are verified by both experimental and numerical results. The numerical results are presented for a Reynolds number based on the inlet conditions between 5 000 and 25 000. From the numerical results, the local pressure loss and local heat transfer coefficients are analyzed and discussed. Subsequently, the global Nusselt number and Fanning friction coefficients are discussed. It is found that the inserted straight section contributes to uniform flow, resulted in significant pressure loss reduction with a slight decrease in heat transfer. The modified channel can reduce the Fanning friction coefficient by 33.1%-84.7% while the global Nusselt number reduction is about 3.6%-30.3%. (author);Abstract Thin layers of MoOx have been deposited by thermal evaporation followed by post-deposition annealing. The density of states distributions of the MoOx films were extracted deconvoluting the absorption spectra, measured by a photothermal deflection spectroscopy setup, including the small polaron contribution. Results revealed a sub-band defect distribution centered 1.1 eV below the conduction band; the amplitude of this distribution was found to increase with post-deposition annealing temperature and film thickness.

Transportation sector carbon dioxide emissions efficiency (TSCDEE) is a key indicator used to prioritize sustainable development in the transportation sector. In this paper, the epsilon-based measure data envelopment analysis model with undesirable outputs is applied to estimate TSCDEE for 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2016. We also analyze influencing factors using the spatial Durbin model. Research shows that the overall TSCDEE of the Chinese provinces studied was 0.618, indicating that most regions are still in need of improvements. The provinces with the highest TSCDEE are located in developed coastal regions of China. This study shows that factors such as transportation structure, traffic infrastructure level, and technological progress have prominent positive effects on TSCDEE, while both urbanization level and urban population density exert significantly negative effects on TSCDEE. The findings should have a far-reaching impact on the sustainable development of global transportation.

Consequently, Converter-interfaced generators are required to provide FCR and participate in the corrective rescheduling. Nevertheless, how to assess the FCR and quantify the adequacy of FCR under contingencies is a big challenge in modern new power system. To address this challenge, a cross-entropy-based frequency-constrained contingency-state-analysis (FC-CSA) model is proposed in this paper. Notably, both frequency control (FC) of units (i.e., conventional synchronous generators and converter-interfaced generators), and under frequency load shedding (UFLS) are incorporated in the primary frequency response. Then a unified system frequency response (SFR) function representing frequency dynamic is derived. This SFR function is extracted and reformulated as a group of mixed-integer linear constraints and participates in the traditional CSA model. Moreover, a set of frequency dynamic indexes, i.e., Expectation of UFLS risk, Expectation of FCR from conventional and converter-interfaced generators, is extended to depict the FCR that the power system requires. These indexes are calculated by the FC-CSA in a cross-entropy-based monte carlo simulation (CE-MCs). Goverde; Francesco Corman;Employing regenerative braking in trains contributes to reducing the amount of energy used, especially when applied to commuter trains and to those used on very dense suburban networks. This paper presents a method to fine-tune the periodic timetable to improve the utilization of regenerative energy and to shave power peaks while maintaining the structure and robustness of the original timetable. First, a mixed-integer linear programming model based on the periodic event scheduling framework is proposed. A set of feasible timetables is determined and optimized with the aim of increasing synchronized acceleration and braking events at the same station, and maintaining the timetable robustness at the specified level. Next, a local search algorithm is developed to optimize the timetable such that the power peak value is minimized. The max-plus system model is adopted to estimate the delay propagation. Monte Carlo simulation is used to evaluate the utilization of regenerative energy and power peaks in random delayed circumstances. The proposed method was adopted to fine-tune the 2019 timetable for a sub-network of the Dutch railway. In the case of on- time scenarios, the optimized timetable increases the regenerative energy usage by almost 290% and decreases the 15-minute power peaks by 8.5%. Here, a series of Li3‐3xM1+xCl6 (−0.14 < x ≤ 0.5, M = Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm) solid electrolytes with orthorhombic and trigonal structures are reported. The orthorhombic phase of Li–M–Cl shows an approximately one order of magnitude increase in ionic conductivities when compared to their trigonal phase. Using the Li–Ho–Cl components as an example, their structures, phase transition, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability are studied. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the facile diffusion in the z‐direction in the orthorhombic structure, rationalizing the improved ionic conductivities. All‐solid‐state batteries of NMC811/Li2.73Ho1.09Cl6/In demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance at both 25 and −10 °C. As relevant to the vast number of isostructural halide electrolytes, the present structure control strategy guides the design of halide superionic conductors.

However, changing climate, population growth and shrinking land resources are threatening food security in many regions of the world. Jiangsu Province, China, is one such region. It is a major food-producing region of the country but is witnessing rapid population growth and urbanization that is putting pressure on agricultural water and land resources and threatening food security of the region. This paper interprets the nexus between regional water availability and food security in Jiangsu Province under different climate change and socio-economic scenarios of population growth and land resource availability. Climate change scenarios are generated based on historical data and Global Climate Model (GCM) products. Socio-economic scenarios are generated based on population growth and crop planted area projections. The uptake of water and nutrients are considered as two dominant biophysical processes of crop growth and food production. Complementing it is human agency, including human labor, irrigation and land-preparation machinery, which are the factors behind water and nutrient use efficiencies of crops grown. Two dominant crops are considered, rice and wheat, that contribute to 61.4% of total crops produced in the province. Results show that adaptation by human agency is necessary to ensure that food supply meets at least the demand of the province under all climate change and socio-economic scenarios. Under relatively favorable scenarios, labor could replace land-preparing machinery since the level of food production can be easily maintained with abundant water and land availability. Mechanization in agricultural production significantly increases food production under unfavorable conditions, since it improves water and nutrient use efficiencies and leads to higher crop yields. This demonstrates that human agency plays an important role in securing food under stressful scenarios of drier climate, population growth, and contraction of agricultural lands.

The supply reliability evaluation of multi-product pipeline systems can improve the effective response to unexpected disruptions and guarantee the reliable oil supply. Based on reliability theory and pipeline scheduling method, an integrated supply reliability evaluation methodology for multi-product pipeline systems is proposed in this paper and the pumps failure, of which influence is the most complex, is focused on. In the methodology, the discrete-time Markov process is adopted to describe the stochastic failure and the Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the system states transition. With the pipeline flowrate upper limits under various pumps failure scenarios optimized in advance, the maximum supply capacity to the downstream markets in each trial is calculated by the pipeline scheduling model. Three indicators are also developed to analyze the pipeline supply reliability from the holistic and individual perspectives. At last, the methodology application is performed on a real-world multi-product pipeline system in China and the supply reliability is analyzed in detail according to the simulation results. It is proved to provide a practical method for the emergency response decision-making and loss prevention.

The utilization of additives in the power cycle has been proven to be an effective way to improve the SCO 2 power cycle efficiency. As one of the core components of the system, the influence of CO 2 -based mixtures on turbine performance needs to be further explored. In this study, the preliminary design and three-dimensional numerical simulation of a 500 kW radial-inflow turbine (RIT) for small-scale SCO 2 power systems were carried out. Furthermore, the design and off-design performance of high Reynolds number and small size turbine under the change of the CO 2 -based binary mixture compositions and mixing ratios were studied. Increasing the amount of nitrogen, oxygen, or helium into CO 2 has a negative effect on the RIT performance, and the appropriate amount of xenon or krypton can improve the turbine efficiency. Moreover, mixtures with higher krypton additions adapt to higher heat source conditions. The loss of the turbine stage passage shows that a large amount of helium greatly reduces the working fluid density, and the high amount of xenon has a great influence on the dynamic viscosity, which all makes the RIT operation deviate from the steady state. Therefore, the CFD model simulation fails indicating that RIT designed based on pure CO 2 may not run smoothly and continuously. The losses in the stage with pure CO 2 and CO 2 –Kr mixture were investigated. The results indicate that the losses originated from the stator cannot be ignored and that the improvement of efficiency is mainly owed to the reduction in clearance losses. However, existing studies have generally focused on the rutting depth and rutting life, and thus became insufficient for comprehensively evaluating the influence of climate change on rutting over the service life. A resilience assessment method for asphalt pavement rutting is developed to solve the above problem. First, the original resilience method is extended to fit the system whose performance level continues to decline. Then, the calculation formulas of rutting resilience are derived by combining the rutting prediction model and the level assessment model. Subsequently, the influence degrees of climate change in representative cities on rutting resilience are studied. The results suggest that neglecting climate change in rutting design of asphalt pavement will lead to insufficient resilience, especially in northern China. (author); Lu, Ming jian (author); Liu, Xiaohua (author);Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHE) are designed to improve heat recovery and energy saving in supercritical CO 2 (S-CO 2 ) power cycles. In the current study, a modified channel PCHE is proposed based on the regular straight channel and a zigzag channel. The thermal–hydraulic performance of four different types of PCHE is numerically investigated and the methods are verified by both experimental and numerical results. The numerical results are presented for a Reynolds number based on the inlet conditions between 5 000 and 25 000. From the numerical results, the local pressure loss and local heat transfer coefficients are analyzed and discussed. Subsequently, the global Nusselt number and Fanning friction coefficients are discussed. It is found that the inserted straight section contributes to uniform flow, resulted in significant pressure loss reduction with a slight decrease in heat transfer. The modified channel can reduce the Fanning friction coefficient by 33.1%-84.7% while the global Nusselt number reduction is about 3.6%-30.3%. (author);Abstract Thin layers of MoOx have been deposited by thermal evaporation followed by post-deposition annealing. The density of states distributions of the MoOx films were extracted deconvoluting the absorption spectra, measured by a photothermal deflection spectroscopy setup, including the small polaron contribution. Results revealed a sub-band defect distribution centered 1.1 eV below the conduction band; the amplitude of this distribution was found to increase with post-deposition annealing temperature and film thickness.

Transportation sector carbon dioxide emissions efficiency (TSCDEE) is a key indicator used to prioritize sustainable development in the transportation sector. In this paper, the epsilon-based measure data envelopment analysis model with undesirable outputs is applied to estimate TSCDEE for 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2016. We also analyze influencing factors using the spatial Durbin model. Research shows that the overall TSCDEE of the Chinese provinces studied was 0.618, indicating that most regions are still in need of improvements. The provinces with the highest TSCDEE are located in developed coastal regions of China. This study shows that factors such as transportation structure, traffic infrastructure level, and technological progress have prominent positive effects on TSCDEE, while both urbanization level and urban population density exert significantly negative effects on TSCDEE. The findings should have a far-reaching impact on the sustainable development of global transportation.

Consequently, Converter-interfaced generators are required to provide FCR and participate in the corrective rescheduling. Nevertheless, how to assess the FCR and quantify the adequacy of FCR under contingencies is a big challenge in modern new power system. To address this challenge, a cross-entropy-based frequency-constrained contingency-state-analysis (FC-CSA) model is proposed in this paper. Notably, both frequency control (FC) of units (i.e., conventional synchronous generators and converter-interfaced generators), and under frequency load shedding (UFLS) are incorporated in the primary frequency response. Then a unified system frequency response (SFR) function representing frequency dynamic is derived. This SFR function is extracted and reformulated as a group of mixed-integer linear constraints and participates in the traditional CSA model. Moreover, a set of frequency dynamic indexes, i.e., Expectation of UFLS risk, Expectation of FCR from conventional and converter-interfaced generators, is extended to depict the FCR that the power system requires. These indexes are calculated by the FC-CSA in a cross-entropy-based monte carlo simulation (CE-MCs).
