The present age is characterized by a very complex economic relationship among finance, technology, social needs, etc., which can be summarized in the word “sustainability.” The sustainable consumption and production policies represent the keys to realize sustainable development. But, the analysis of the carbon footprint data points out that the present economies are still carbon-consumption production. The reduction of greenhouse gasses emissions is based on a shift from fossil to renewable and bio-based industrial raw materials, with a related reorganization of the chains of the energy and manufacturing sectors. But, this requirement implies technological choices based on a sustainable measurement of their impacts on the ecological and economical contexts. So, social and economic requirements must also be taken into account by the decision-makers. Bioeconomy can represent a possible approach to deal with the requirements of the present time. But, new needs emerge in relation to sustainability. So, sustainable policies require new indicators, in order to consider the link among economics, technologies, and social well-being. In this paper, an irreversible thermodynamic approach is developed, in order to introduce a thermoeconomic indicator, based on thermodynamic optimization methods, but also on socioeconomic and ecological evaluations. The entropy production rate is introduced in relation to the CO2emission flows from human activities, and it is related to the income index, in order to consider the economic and social equity. This approach is of interest of the researchers in the field of econophysics, thermoeconomy, economics, and bioeconomy.

Device-to-device (D2D) communications as an underlay to cellular networks can not only increase the system capacity and energy efficiency but also enable national security and public safety services. A key requirement for these services is to provide alternative access to cellular networks when they are partially or fully damaged due to a natural disaster event. In this paper, we employ energy harvesting (EH) at the relay with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer to prolong the lifetime of energy constrained network. In particular, we consider a user equipment relay that harvests energy from radio frequency signal via base station and use harvested energy for D2D communications. We integrate clustering technique with D2D communications into cellular networks such that communication services can be maintained when the cellular infrastructure becomes partially dysfunctional. Simulation results show that our proposed EH-based D2D clustering model performs efficiently in terms of coverage, energy efficiency, and cluster formation to extend the communication area. Moreover, a novel concept of power transfer in D2D clustering with user equipment relay and cluster head is proposed to provide a new framework to handle critical and emergency situations. The proposed approach is shown to provide significant energy saving for both mobile users and clustering heads to survive in emergency and disaster situations.

In many production clouds, with the notable exception of Google, aggregation-based VM placement policies are used to provision datacenter resources energy and performance efficiently. However, if VMs with similar workloads are placed onto the same machines, they might suffer from contention, particularly, if they are competing for similar resources. High levels of resource contention may degrade VMs performance, and, therefore, could potentially increase users' costs and infrastructure's energy consumption. Furthermore, segregation-based methods result in stranded resources and, therefore, less economics. The recent industrial interest in segregating workloads opens new directions for research. In this paper, we demonstrate how aggregation and segregation-based VM placement policies lead to variabilities in energy efficiency, workload performance, and users' costs. We, then, propose various approaches to aggregation-based placement and migration. We investigate through a number of experiments, using Microsoft Azure and Google's workload traces for more than twelve thousand hosts and a million VMs, the impact of placement decisions on energy, performance, and costs. Our extensive simulations and empirical evaluation demonstrate that, for certain workloads, aggregation-based allocation and consolidation is ~9.61% more energy and ~20.0% more performance efficient than segregation-based policies. Moreover, various aggregation metrics, such as runtimes and workload types, offer variations in energy consumption and performance, therefore, users' costs.<br>
